The Legacy of the Wolves
By Sam Dochoda
(Aljan)
They were hunted and killed
They were shunned and chased off
They were forced off their lands and their prey killed
Despite all this wrong doing, the wolves still pass down their legacy
Listen
Listen to them howl
They are the children of the moon and they sing their praise to her
And encourage others to join the song
A soft padded step
An ear perked
A nose sniffing the air
Silently, the wolf hunts its prey
A growl of an insubordinate
The snarl of the alpha
A whine of a subordinate
Thus is the way a pack is kept together
The whimpering
The scramble
The love and patience of the mother
Thus is the wolf pups’ ways until they are half-grown
The teamwork of all ranks
The fright of the prey
The battle of life
Thus is the way of the hunt
A dawn of a new day
The gust of a new wind
A taste of new food
The beautiful sunset of a dying day
One by one, they sing, a beautiful chorus of voices
As the pack sings their songs to the moon
Love is what holds them together
Life is what they protect
Even to this day, wolves live in the wilderness, doing what I have said here and more.
Wolves have passed on their
legacy not to their sons and daughters, but to us, the race of
