The Impasse

Prologue
I was cold and numb by the
freezing rain and the chilly wind that blew through the city alleys. It was a
cold and dark night in the city of
As I hid in the trash piles and behind the dumpsters, I thought to myself… “Why? Why did this happen? And how?” My life was turning out to be perfect, but I could only blame myself for what I did not so long ago.
“How could I have been so blind?” I asked my self.
I leaned myself against the brick wall, and slid down into the trash.
“What kind of monster did I turn into? Why did this happen?”
Tears started to roll down the sides of my face. My life was over. There was probably nothing I could do to save myself. I was all alone.
“Why?”
Chapter 1
Hello. My name is Jack. What I am about to tell you is the life I had until this point. But before I get to that, there are a few other things that I need to share with you. First of all, you are not going to like me. In fact, I don’t want you to like me. The person that I was before, I would rather say, was pure evil.
I am a rapist, and a murderer. And the only reason I still refer to myself as those things is because in the time that I did those crimes, I enjoyed doing them. And some say “Once a criminal, always a criminal.” I can’t help but give in to that saying.
I was born and raised not to far
from this city. As a pup, I had a happy life with my masters. John and Macy,
the owners of the house, said that they “had never seen a more handsome, well
mannered, or hyper long-haired European Shepherd.” I was only completely
flattered when I heard them tell me that… but I’m getting ahead of myself. About two and a half years later, when I
was in my mid teens, my masters took me to the
While in the pound, I met three other dogs that I knew as friends about a year ago. Randy, Dan and Tom were my cell row mates at the pound. We were all aligned on the same side of the hall way. They took interest in me the moment they saw me. The first thing they asked me was, “Watta ya in for?” I told them that I didn’t quite know. I didn’t seem to remember if I had done anything. I felt at the time that I didn’t have a purpose for being in there. And every time I hear that voice echoing through me head saying, “Well, kid. We’re going to give you a purpose,” my legs shiver.
For a while they have been putting together a plan to bust us out. “Why would you want to bust me out too?” I asked them. I could hear Randy’s horrible, raspy voice replying, “Because we like to do others favors. You need a purpose? We’ll give you one.” I don’t know how I as so gullible to believe that, but it’s too late now.
The three of them had spotted a thin open space between the ground and the outside gate. The plan was to get me to break away the gate enough for me to slide through. Then, since the humans didn’t put any locks on the gates, and them being easy to open, I would open their gates, and we were free. I have to say that, unfortunately, it worked. If only I knew what the three of them were capable of doing and teaching me to do the same, I would have never done it.
Ever since we escaped, Randy Dan and Tom taught me something that I never should have accepted. And I know you could guess what it is. At first, as every teenager should feel, I didn’t really like the looks of it. But me being as young as I was, they brain washed me with the word “favor”. They told me that we were doing what lonely, stray female dogs wanted them to do. Randy’s exact words were, “We’re just give’n em one last thrill, and them we put them out of their pain and misery.” I had learned later on that this was also known as “raping then murdering.” When I got a bit older and tried it out, it was like a hobby. As soon as I had done it, I had officially become a monster. Shortly after, they decided to make me their leader, and I took pride in it. It was as if I was tempted by the devil and then automatically possessed by him. A while after, I should say, “my reign” I spotted something that had changed my view completely. I had caught a glimpse of a happy family with their dog. At that moment they were having the time of their lives. And I couldn’t help but remember John, Macy, and their three gorgeous children.
I fell into a deep depression after that. Tons of memories of the happy times I had with my childhood masters came rushing back to me. I can gladly say that the monster in me was gone, but so was my will to live, I should say. When my demon left, so did my soul. I was a shell, just waiting to be picked up and either kept as a keep sake, or thrown a great distance. Luckily, my first encounter was a girl. Her name was Stacy. She saw that I was depressed and she felt a comparison because she had been there and done that. When she met me, she took me in. It was like she had taught me to live again. We became friends shortly after, then best friends, then eventually lovers. When I was with her, I was more than happy. She was a smart, funny, and an attractive looking retriever. But when the friendship of a boy and a girl is so expected to some, it was the last thing that was expected to Randy, Dan and Tom.
When I had met Stacy, I had obviously shut myself away from Randy, Dan and Tom. They just thought “Ah, he’ll be back. He needs us.” But when they saw that I was with an attractive female, and she wasn’t dead lying on the round, they got mad. They had decided to track me down. And when they found me, they did the unthinkable.
I was alone with Stacy one night. We were talking about our future: a litter or two of pups, then their pups after that, the usual. Then the guys decided to pay an “old friend” a visit. They held Stacy captive in front of me, and they gave me the most unfair choice ever. They told me that if I didn’t handle her, they would instead and make me watch. I couldn’t hurt Stacy, I just couldn’t. So, against my better judgment, I watched in horror as the three of them repeated the history I had with them. It was then that I had realized the monster that I had become. I couldn’t handle watching, it was pure torture. I tried to offer that I would go back with them if they had just stopped… but it was too late. Before the words could reach their ears, Stacy was dead. At that moment, all of my happiness, all of my joy, all of my love was gone. All I had left in me was sadness, hate and fear. After it was done, they left me there to rot. And Randy’s last words were, “Once a criminal, always a criminal, Jack. Where ever you are, we will find you. And we will be there to remind you of the person you were, one way or another. There is no escape, just remember that.”
As the demons left, I sat there in all of my sorrow and wept like the rain outside, over the corpse of my once loved one. My heart had been ripped out and drained. I couldn’t feel the bearing of it, almost as if it were actually gone. I could no longer watch my dead lover, so I ran. I didn’t know where I was going, and it didn’t matter. And in the dead of the night, I lay in the garbage of the alleys, decaying, rotting from my loss.
“What am I going to do?” I asked myself. Every time I fall in love they will do the same that they did to Stacy.” I had almost thrown up by the thought of her being gone, and by the paws of my own partners. I had to get away, so far away that Randy, Dan or Tom would never find me.
When you have lost, what it seems is everything, you become dead inside. But when you find true love, even if what you had lost was love, hope seems inevitable. Stacy, I had realized, was not my true love. What I found later on in my journey to get away was the key to living.
Get comfortable, because this is how I found my true love, and how she taught me to be all that I could be of the good person that I was before I met Randy, Dan and Tom, and how I learned to live again, and keep on living.
Hello. My name is Jack. And this is my story.
Chapter 2
I was very tired from all the running. I just wanted to fall asleep, right in the trash. But I had to get out of the city. I had to go far away, a few states away if necessary.
I urged myself to get up. I slowly got to my feet as small paper bags and napkins slid off of my back. I started to walk fore ward. I was a little woozy at first, but I got the hang of it. I turned the corner of the alley and took a left. I trotted on as I saw rats scampering from dumpster to dumpster, the only thing I can really see in the darkness. I started to see the street lights at the end of the alley. When I got to the end, I didn’t see any people walking on the side walks. I remembered this street. It was always dead at night. I looked both ways just to make sure no bums were walking on the side walks. Then I turned a left out of the alley and crossed the street to the right side. I saw another alley at the corner. I started to run a little to get to the alley.
When I got to the corner, I saw a few trucks down the alley. It was a loading dock. This could be my chance. I thought. Hopefully, it was going to some place far, far away. I saw some smoke coming from the exhaust pipes. They were leaving tonight. Thankfully, I saw one open. I hurried down the alley to get to the dock. I slowed as I got to the end to see what the side of the loading dock said. It said “Cross-Country.” That was good. It was definitely going out of the state.
I looked
around the corner to see if any one was there. I only saw the driver through
the window, adjusting his side view mirror on the passenger side. So, I hurried
to the back of the truck, and hopped on. It was a little crowded with boxes on
the inside, marked with the words, “Yellowstone Rangers” on them. It looked
like I was heading for
I was wondering around the stacks of boxes and found a good looking hiding spot. I turned a corner to the left into a little enclosed space. I slowly walked over, circled the area, and plopped down onto the hard, plywood covered floor. It wasn’t comfortable at all, but it would have to do. I was so tired, I wanted nothing else but to just fall asleep, and not wake up for a few days.
I heard the man in the overalls walk over.
“Alright, Bob. Let’s do this.” He said.
“You got it, Frank” said the driver.
I laughed at the humans. Bob and Frank. Huh. Such typical human names. I thought. I heard him close the heavy iron door, making the room pitch black. That was just fine. That was what I needed.
“Fifty cargo boxes headed strait for
“That’s right.” I said quietly to myself.
I waited
until I heard the passenger door slam and until the truck started to move. I
was moved a bit to the side by the movement of the truck backing out from the
dock. I would have never been so glad to feel that truck move. I was heading
for
Chapter 3
Needless to say, I had a good sleep that night, despite all the rumbling and bumps from the ride. And it wasn’t even that cold in the back of the moving truck. I thank God for the thick coat or fur. You could have guessed that any dreams I would have had wouldn’t be happy ones. I know they wouldn’t be pleasant after what I was forced to watch that night. As much as I tried to keep the images of Stacey’s death out of my head, they just kept coming back. But I couldn’t let them get to me. That’s how I got a surprisingly good sleep… while it lasted.
I did wake once in the middle of the night. I couldn’t really tell if my eyes were closed or not, with it being as dark as it was inside of the moving truck. As expected as it was for me, my recently dismantled demons returned to me, along with a splitting head ache. The horrifying image of Stacy’s terrified expression was all I could see in the dark. I was shivering only from the fear of seeing the last face my recently deceased lover ever made. And to know that it was done by the paws of the ones that I once called my companions, it killed me. I felt as if I was an empty shell again. But this time, it felt like there was no hope for me to be picked up and kept, or even thrown the slightest distance. Just left to be washed up on shore and brought back in by the sea. I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to love again. I even doubted any female would even love me. I figured that this was the end of me. As I sat in the corner of the moving truck, in pitch blackness, I started to cry. I started to wonder that if I had never met Randy, Dan or Tom at the pound, anything would be any different. I thought that everything would, but I didn’t know that. Maybe I would have met them later in life. Maybe the three of them were just out for a kill that night, and would have murdered Stacy either way. I tried to think that everything would be different, but it didn’t matter. What had happened, happened. There was nothing I could have done to change it. Though I obviously wished I could have done something to change it. All I could do was wait for me to approach my destination and hope for the best of it.
I was still
very tired. My head ache had worn off in a few minutes. From what I could hear
from the humans in the front, we weren’t really anywhere near
Chapter 4
Around
Janice was
a German teacher at
Steve and Janice had noticed that Stacy, their 3 year old golden lab, had been seeing a European Shepard. He was a very handsome dog, they both thought. She had been leading him through her doggie door once or twice, they noticed and he would still be there when they got home. They both thought they looked cute together. They would always play in the back yard. The Shepard had a collar on him, it said “Jack”. But he never went home. Maybe he had become a stray. And if he was, they would be more than happy to take him in as their new pet.
Janice had a very wide imagination. So she thought, Hmm. Maybe I should teach him his own language. Instead of using the English language with the Shepard, she used German. And he was doing pretty well at it. She figured she taught him a lot. She’d give him a treat whenever he sat when she said, “Sitzen Sie.” And he’d jump up and down when ever she asked, “Will ein Spaziergang weitergehen?” Which meant, “Wanna go for a walk?” To Steve and Janice, he seemed like a very nice, well mannered dog.
-
When Steve and Janice reached the front door of the apartment, Steve put the key in the hole and opened the door, while Janice held the umbrella.
“Damen zuerst.” He said.
“Wow. Danke Shon. Good job.” She said as she walked through the door.
“Thanks.”
When Janice walked in, she was walking backwards as she watched Steve. Steve was staring right at Janice while they walked in to the living room.
As they both walked in, they held each other and kissed.
“Thanks for dinner, handsome.”
“My pleasure, Madame.”
Janice smiled and kissed him again. As they faced each other, they both walked into the kitchen and made out, but for only a minute or two.
“We gotta let Stacy out. I’m surprised she’s not barking her head off.”
“Yeah. Go ahead and go upstairs, get ready for bed. I’ll let her out.”
“Thank you.”
Janice gave Steve another kiss, and pulled away to go upstairs. Steve continued to look at her, smiling, as she went up the stairs. He turned to go into the living room.
“Stacy.” He called whistling afterwards. “We’re home, girl.”
But as Steve began to enter the living room, he saw blood on the floor leading into the kitchen.
“What the.”
He rushed into the living room, and in horror, saw Stacy lying on the floor, not moving, with her throat ripped open. Steve fell against the wall with his hand over his mouth.
“Oh, my God.” He said in a faint whisper. “Janice, get down here!” Steve shrieked in terror.
Janice came rushing down.
“What is it? What is it?”
Janice came running into the kitchen, and noticed blood on the floor as Steve did.
“Oh, my God. Why is there blood-“
But before Janice could finish her sentence, she took in a deep gasp as she saw Stacy lying on the floor, dead.
“Oh, my God! Stacy!” She screamed.
Janice ran into Steve’s arms and sobbed, burying her face in Steve’s chest. Steve held her and laid the side of his face over her head.
“Oh, my God. How could this happen?” Steve whispered.
Janice ran over to Stacy’s body, and cried over her.
“No… Stacy.” She sobbed.
Steve walked over and bent down and held Janice at her side, rubbing her shoulder in comfort. Then, as Steve looked at Stacy’s body, he noticed black and brown hair, all over Stacy’s body. It was definitely a dog. He was angry, so he thought of the first one he could blame.
“Jack!” He yelled. “Damn you!”
Steve stood up, and Janice looked closer, wiping her tears away. She also noticed that there was black and reddish brown fur all over her body, but there wasn’t any white hair anywhere. It was all black and brown. Jack’s cheeks and snout were filled with white hair, like he was mixed with a Husky or a Malamute. But there wasn’t one white hair, not even where Stacy’s neck was.
“Steve.” She called silently.
“What?”
“It couldn’t have been Jack.
“What?! Than whom else could it have been?” He yelled.
“Come here.”
Steve came over next to Janice, frustrated, and kneeled down next to her.
“Look at this. It’s all black and brown hair.”
“Yeah, exactly.”
“But hold on a sec. Jack’s cheeks and snout have white hair all over them. There isn’t one white hair in any of this. Not even near her neck. And if Jack did it, there must be white hair near her neck. How would he be able to bite her on her neck without having his face near her neck?”
Jack thought hard about it. She had a point. There wasn’t one white hair near Stacy’s bitten neck.
“I don’t know, Janice… I don’t know.”
“It couldn’t have been Jack, Steve!” She yelled.
“I know I know.” He said calmly, still thinking about it. Who could have it been? He thought.
“Hold on. I’m going to call the police. Stay here, ok.”
Steve ran into the kitchen, picked up the phone, and quickly dialed 911. How could have this happened? Who could have done this if it wasn’t Jack? He thought to himself. It didn’t seem like he was ever going to find out. They don’t take foot prints for dogs at the police station, so they were a bit out of luck.
Chapter 5
Randy still had the raw taste of blood and Golden Retriever in his mouth. He licked his chops of the blood. Not that it tasted good or anything, but it made him feel bad, like a job well done. He looked back at Dan and Tom near the end of the alley way. They were fighting again. What morons. He thought.
“Watch it, Tom. Who said you can dig in my trash can?” Dan questioned angrily.
“Your trash can? What makes you think it’s yours, huh?”
“Cause I found it, pug snout!”
“You see this face, huh?” Tom snarled. “Do I look like I’m playing with you?”
“Stop fighting you morons.” Randy yelled. “It’s not going to get you anywhere. I’m just going to end up knocking your skulls together like I always do.”
“You’re not our keepers, Randy,” said Dan. “We can take care of ourselves, you know.”
Randy hated hearing mouth from Dan. He was always giving him lip. Randy looked back with a snarl and ran up to his face, growling. Dan took a step back and cowered under him.
“You wanna repeat that again, smart ass? You think you’re any better? You wouldn’t last two minutes without me. So you listen well. You better stop mouthing back at me or you’ll get your throat ripped out just like that blond we just slaughtered, you understand me?”
Dan was peeing where he stood. Randy scared him to death whenever he threatened him like that. Randy was not the dog to mess with. You give him attitude, and he’s on you like fat on a walrus. He didn’t take any crap from anyone.
“Y-your right, Randy. I’m sorry.” Dan said, cowardly
“You better be, smart ass.”
Randy then turned away and started to walk back through the alley.
“Let’s get moving, both of you.” Randy called. “We need to get lover boy before he leaves town.”
“What makes you think he left, Randy?” Tom asked.
“Are you serious?” Randy laughed. “Did you see his face when we slaughtered that blond?”
“Yeah, but… what if he didn’t?” Dan asked.
“Then we’ll let ‘em rot.”
“He may have already left, Randy.” Tom said. “I don’t think he’d stay around here if we just killed his girl friend.”
“He’d better have.” Randy growled. “If not, he’s dead.”
Dan and Tom laughed behind Randy.
“Sounds like a plan, Randy.” Tom said.
“You better believe it.”
Chapter 6
I woke up again, and it was still very dark. Despite the little rumples here and there along the trip, I had a pretty good sleep. And not nightmares this time, thank God. When I was awake, the truck was bumping pretty hard; I could barely stay where I was lying. But it was also going pretty slow too. Maybe I was pretty close.
I came out of my little resting
place, trying to walk and keep my balance at the same time. When I came around
the corner, I saw a little line of light under the steel door. It was day time!
The sun must have been shining pretty bright if I were to see a light in this
dark place. I slowly walked up to it, and tried to peek through the tiny crack.
It was hard to keep focus from all the bumps on the road. It looked like a dirt
road from what I was able to see. Maybe I was here! Maybe I had reached
There was silence for a few seconds, and then I heard the driver speak.
“We should be coming up on the camp pretty soon,” said Bob. “How long has it been since we passed the sign?”
“I’d say a good ten minutes.”
Wow.I thought. This place must be pretty big. I could still tell that we were on the dirt road. We were still hitting some pretty hard pumps, as well as forming them on the side of my head. Ouch. I hate gravity.
“Oh. Here we are. Can you see the campus?” Bob asked.
“Yep. Here we are.
“Sure is.”
This is what I hated about being in
a crate or an enclosed place, because nine times out of ten, I can’t see what’s
going on. The humans up front were pretty much teasing me by describing the
“beautiful” view. I didn’t know what
I started to feel a bit of centrifugal force as the truck slowed down. It started to make a left, and I almost fell on my side to the right. As the truck got strait again I moved over to the left, almost falling down again. I got easily irritated over that.
Luckily, the truck stopped, which also meant, I must be here! I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to get out of this God forsaken truck. Needless to say, I had more than enough of that ride.
My heart was beating faster and
faster by the freaking minute. I had no idea what this place was going to be
like. Regardless, I was more than glad to be away from
I could hear the two humans shut their doors from getting out of the truck. I listened to every one of their foot steps on the dirt road, crunch by crunch. They were getting quieter by the step, which wasn’t good. They were going away from the truck. Hopefully they were just notifying someone that they had some cargo.
I started to hear one of the humans talk not to far away from the truck. He was yelling as if he was talking to someone that was thirty feet away from him.
“We’re ready to start unloading! Do you want us to bring ‘em on in?!” Frank called.
“Yeah, go ahead! I’ll open up the garage for ya!” The person yelled. She was a woman. It sounded like she was quite a few yards away. Maybe we were at the end of a parking lot.
I could hear the sound of the humans’ footsteps returning.
“Alright, man. Let’s do this.” said Frank.
“You got it.”
I quickly hid behind the stack of boxes at the left side of the truck. It was a wide stack, so he only needed to duck a bit. Once they both had their backs turned, he would jump off the back of the truck in between them, and run off. Perfect plan even if it was just made up in ten seconds.
I started to hear the metal door slide open. I tried to keep as low as possible without my stomach touching the floor. I could hear the hardwood boxed sliding off the floor. I got closer to the end of the stack I was hiding behind. I stuck my right side of my head out just slightly, just enough for me to see out of the corner of my eye. I saw the passenger, Frank, picking up a large, heavy box and trying to put it onto the concrete without dropping it. I quickly went to the other side of the stack. I saw through the crack between the boxes and the wall that Bob was lifting a slightly lighter box. This may have been a good chance. If only the box was a little heavier it would have given him more time. Then, I heard Frank give out a yell.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” He yelled.
Then, I heard a big crash, like the sound of a box hitting the concrete. Duh.
Yes! I thought. This was a perfect opportunity to get out of this place.
“Aw, dang it!”
“What? What’s the matter?”
“The box, I dropped it.”
“Ah, Frank. What’d ya do that for?”
“It was an accident, Bob. I swear.”
I stuck my head out of the side of the stack again, this time without as much stealth. I saw Bob looking over Frank’s shoulder, seeing what happened. He then started to kneel down at his side and start to pick the pieces of the broken box, with Frank picking up the packages that were inside.
This was my chance! This was my chance to get out of this place and into the wild, to be free and never have to live with my guilt again. There was nothing Randy, Dan or Tom could do about it. This was my chance to live more free than I did with them.
I had plenty of time to make this all work. I walked out from the side of the stack, seeing them still picking up pieces of board and supplies, and I went to the end of the truck, and jumped off onto the concrete. That jump could not have felt better than it did on that day. That was the leap of faith right there. Plus I thanked God for not having to be on that moving truck again. I quickly ran to the side of the truck, and looked at the scenery of what was going to be my new home… The humans were right. The view was absolutely beautiful. I saw many mountains, and open fields. There were so many places that I could run without having to worrying about running into a hobo on the street.
This was my new home. No one could stop me now.
Chapter 7
Randy couldn’t help but think about the thought that Jack may have run away, even though he thought of it himself. It was definitely a sure instinct to do something like that. But Randy didn’t care about instincts. He hated cowards. Randy thought that for Jack’s sake, he better not be a coward, or he’s going to be sleeping with the fish corpses in the dumpsters.
Randy was still walking through the alleys, Dragging Dan and Tom along with him. And right when he passed a bunch of trashcans and dumpsters, he caught a scent. He sniffed around closer to the piles of trash on the ground, trying to make out who it belonged to.
“Hey, Randy! What’d ya stop for?!” Tom called.
“Hold up a second. I caught something.”
“A scent?!”
Randy continued to sniff.
“Yeah…” He said to himself.
As Randy got deeper and deeper into the piles of trash, the scent was clear. It was Jack. He had been there. He could smell up against the brick wall too.
“What’d ya got, Randy?!” Dan called.
“It’s Jack. He’s been here!”
Dan and Tom started to run up to where Randy was.
“Lover boy?” Tom asked.
“Yeah! His scent’s all over this area!”
Randy started to sniff along the ground. He could smell him on the ground as well. The scent continued down the alley. Randy slowly followed it to the corner where a left was to be taken. It was pretty strong, like he had just been there. When he lifted his head up, he could smell it. Dan and Tom caught up to him. They both sniffed in unison.
“Dang! His scents’ all over the place!” said Tom.
“Yeah, strong too.”
“There’s only one corner to turn. He must have gone that way.” said Dan.
“I know he did.” Randy replied.
Randy began to sniff again, and headed around the corner. Dan and Tom followed him. He was going pretty fast without running. It was actually hard for the other two to keep up with him. Randy barely had to sniff. He just had to breathe. That’s how thick Jack’s scent was. He continued to run to the end of the alley. He looked to his left, and saw a long road, but Jack’s scent wasn’t in that direction. When he turned left, he could smell him again. Obviously, he went left. On the other side of the road at the corner, he could see another alley. It was just common sense to know that he might have gone in there. Randy quickly ran to the alley across the street.
“Whoa! Hold up, Randy!” yelled Tom.
Randy didn’t stop. He didn’t even turn his head at Tom. He continued to run towards the alley. Right when he got there, he could see an open area, a loading dock. There weren’t any trucks in it though. Randy quickly ran up to the loading dock. On the left side of the parking space, he could smell Jack again. But then, he turned in another direction. He couldn’t smell it anymore. He continued to walk, and there was nothing. He turned in every direction, and Randy smelled nothing of Jack. Just in that open spot of where there was a truck.
Randy was no where near happy. He felt like ripping some random dog’s throat out. No more scent at a loading dock only meant one thing. Jack had left town.
Randy was more than angry. He thought he was going to have a freaking conniption. He knew that coward was going to run off, he just didn’t want to believe it. He thought about what Dan said earlier. It was common sense to know that he would have run off like that, but he still hated cowards, whether it made sense to run off or not.
Jack was in for it now. Oh, yeah. He was definitely in for it.
Chapter 8
I couldn’t describe how happy I was. It almost felt like there was nothing in the world to worry about. I couldn’t help but smile as I ran through the wide open fields filled with grass. I could feel the wind through my coat of fur. It actually felt weird not having to dodge a car or something. But I felt great. I felt free. It was unlike anything I’ve ever felt before, and I loved that feeling. I still do. It was a kind of feeling that gave me confidence. I even had it in me to laugh a little bit. It was unbelievable. I was finally free.
I was sprinting as fast as I could across the fields, heading strait for the forest. I didn’t pay any mind to the humans back at the ranger’s base. I was far enough to be safe. I looked back at the base. It was pretty far back. I couldn’t even see the humans there. Then, as I looked back, he looked at the surrounding fields, and the clear blue sky, with the sun hitting every spot in the park. It was beautiful. I could see the wavy meadows and the tree covered hills covering the whole area. The green of the fields mixed in perfectly with the tan of the sides of the cliffs and mountains. This was only something that a dog could dream about, and it was real. It was all real. A dream come true.
It took me about maybe three minutes to reach the forest. I was on the not so steep part of the hill. I can’t remember the last time I saw a tree. There were pines everywhere, and they were so green. I couldn’t see one dead pine needle on the trees that surrounded me, and there were no dead branches on the ground where I was. The ground was almost clear. The forest in front of me looked pretty clear, so I decided to take another run.
It felt great, running free through the woods. I felt wild. My soul had lifted up, and I felt as light as the wind. I smiled as I ran past the trees. I still felt the wind on my face even through the trees. I don’t think I had ever been this happy… well… I think there was one time.
I started to think about John and Macy, and their three beautiful children, and the days I spent with them. I think that was the only time in my life I was ever this happy. At that time, I couldn’t have asked for a better family to spend my life with. I slowed down at the thought of them. I started to look down. I missed them dearly, so dearly. My throat started to feel heavy, and I felt water come into my eyes… I missed them.
Then all of a sudden, I spotted something out of the corner of my eye. It was some kind of Grey thing. It was pretty close. I almost started to panic not knowing what it was. The next thing I know, I get knocked on the head, and I hear an “Ow!” Come from whatever I had just butted heads with. I heard my self say “Ow!” too, along with the knock of my skull. I couldn’t concentrate on what the voice sounded like, my head hurt too much.
I got knocked to the ground, not too hard, but not too soft either.
“Oh, God.” I moaned. “Ow.”
Once again, in the corner of my eye, I saw the Grey figure stand up slowly.
“Ow, my head.” She said.
It was a girl! I thought. Oh, no.
“Watch where you’re going!”
I got up slowly, still feeling the pain on my noggin.
“I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
Then I looked at her, and saw what I had bumped heads with. It was a wolf! A Grey wolf! I started to become concerned about myself. The last I’ve heard about wolves, they aren’t very nice.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into you.” I said.
The wolf was rubbing her ears and her head with her right paw, groaning from the pain. I got a little closer, trying to keep my distance at the same time.
“Are you alright?” I asked.
“I’m fine. It’s just a bump.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“It’s alright.”
Then she looked up, and I saw her face. And when I saw her face, I thought I was looking at an angel. She was absolutely beautiful! Positively stunning! Her light Grey fur, her glowing eyes, her perfect body and face; it must have been an angel, I thought. She was looking right into my eyes, and I was looking right into hers. I was in a Trans. I have never seen anything more beautiful in my life. I thought I was dreaming. I felt the bump on top of my head, and it hurt when I felt it. I wasn’t dreaming! She was real! I almost couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Then a few seconds later, discovered that I was staring at her. I must have looked like a freaking idiot. I shook my head, and looked at her again.
“I really didn’t see you coming. I was looking down and I didn’t see you.”
“Oh, it’s alright. I understand. It was my fault too, I guess. I wasn’t paying attention.”
I couldn’t believe it. She was smiling at me. She sounded so nice. She didn’t sound the least threatening to me. And her voice, her voice sounded so soft, so calm and beautiful, along with her looks.
“Are you hurt badly?”
“No, I’m alright. It’s just a bump.” She laughed. Her laugh was so wonderful. It made me want to smile. I have never heard a more perfect laugh in my life.
I walked closer to her, trying to see the bump on her head. My heart started to race as I got closer. I didn't see any large, swollen bump anywhere through her fur, or even a red spot, which I was glad for. The last thing I wanted was to leave a mark on someone that I just met, especially a female. She noticed me coming over and started to talk to me.
“Is there anything there?”
“No. I don't see anything, which is weird because I heard that bump.” I said examining the top of her head.
“Yeah.” She said as I continued to examine her head. “Me too.”
After a few minutes of looking at the top of her head, I didn't see anything bad.
“You're right. I think you'll be fine.”
“Thanks for checking.” She said smiling.
“Oh, no problem.”
I backed away a little, and she looked at me.
“Does yours hurt?” She asked.
“Oh, no. I'm fine.”
“Are you sure, you didn't sound very fine when you were on the ground.”
“Yeah, I'm sure. Pain goes away for me just like that. Trust me.”
She giggle a little. My heart sank hearing her laugh. My heart sank just to hear her soft, gentle voice.
She paused a little. “I'm Sarah.”
“I'm Jack.”
“Well, it's very nice to meet you, Jack.”
“Likewise, Sarah.”
I blinked and smiled at her. I couldn't help it. She looked at me a little strangely.
“What?”
I paused. “Oh, nothing. It's just that... you're very nice”
After hearing that, she smiled at me. And I felt very good knowing that I could make her smile.
“You make a very good impression for your kind... not to say that there would be a bad impression of course. No offense.”
“Oh, none taken at all... Thank you, Jack.”
“You're welcome, Sarah.”
After that we stared at each other for a bit. I couldn't believe that I had just said that to her. But then again, I felt so good knowing that I did. After all, it was the truth. She was very nice, and I guess on the inside, I just wanted her to know how I thought of her. Today, I'm glad to know that I told her.
“Would you like to come with me?” She asked. “I was going on a walk and I to tend to get a little lonely sometimes.”
“Sure. I'd love to.”
“Ok.” She said smiling.
And we started to walk together, right beside each other.
It was so strange, yet so wonderful how she made me feel. When you meet a girl that you met by accidentally bumping heads with her, chances are you don't see that person again. But there was something in her that made me want to meet her. Just how unbelievably kind she was and angelic she looked and sounded. It was like something told me that she was going to be a huge part of my life. And I'm more than glad that I acted on it.
I was so happy when I was with her. I mean just being there with her made me smile, knowing that I was with her. I had just met this girl and I was already feeling a strong connection with her, stronger than any other connection that I've ever had before.
I wasn't completely sure about this, but I think I had fallen in love.
