I remember when I was a young pup. I lived in a den that was closed to a small bubbly brook. Trees mostly elms surrounded my parents' den. I had 3 siblings. Long Claw was tan/gray/brown. He was my brother. Sparkle was gray. She was my sister and my other sister was a black/white wolf with a habit of picking a fight. Mom named her Battle. Mom was a dark gray wolf named Mist and she was so kind but when we were threaten by anything she was like a lioness, snarling and showing her teeth. I looked like my Dad but I was the mischievous one. But my Dad was my hero. He was brown/black and he was bold and was cleverer than a fox. He was a skilled fighter who believed having the non-wolves as your friends could help give you important news. His name was Scar Eye because he had a scar over his left eye. He died from the hands of the two-legged. Sparkle witnessed it, seeing our father running for his life over the soft snow, a strange flying machine following him and hearing a crack that had scarred Sparkle for life causing her to never speak again.
2 months later
One day a fox came by the den while we were playing. Mom had gotten into the roughhouse. The fox was a good friend. He said hunters were coming this way. Mom growled and quickly hid us in the brush that was close to the den. She was about to walk off when she heard a stick break. She looked but it was a false alarm. Because a white tail doe was passing by. Mist walked away and vanished like mist. We waited for hours never seeing Mom. Long Claw said that we should go look for her. We hesitated but then we set out. It seemed hours but Battle who had the best sense of smell scented death. As we got closer we all smelled it. Death lingered everywhere and every thing was quiet. Not even the robin chirped it's beautiful song. Than it started to smell real bad. As we got to the top of the ridge, Sparkle cried, "Mom!" That was a first we had heard Sparkle speak in 2 months. There at the bottom, on the soft grass with dried blood all over her laid Mom. Her beautiful gray coat covered in dried blood. Her legs were frozen in a running motion and her eyes were glassy but filled fear. Her mouth was open as if she was panting hard while still alive. Her white teeth shined in the sunlight. We whimpered and whined. Then we howled our sad song. We turned to leave to return back home with sorrow. Mom and Dad were gone forever, never to return.
Wolf pups like these are left alone. The adult wolves are shot on sight, run down by helicopters. The only protected area the wolves have is Yellowstone Park. Bush has made it that wolves can be shot on sight, from the ground or from the air. Wolves are no longer safe from us humans. We, humans are the ones that kick the wolves out of their homes. How can we stand to see these grand creatures die at our feet, their blood spilled on our hands? Even Yellowstone is becoming less and less more protected for wolves.
