The Grief of a Wolf

2006—Forever
The wind is cold though the sun is out
Grey clouds dot the sky
Block almost all light
A rain pour nears
The plain weeps and mourns
As I do the same
Here, I stand in the elements trying desperately to seek solitude and comfort
Though it is vain for I receive none
I let out a cry of anguish and the storm echoes my cry
Thunder clashes in the sky and lightning flashes in the distance
The wind blows my wet fur about
I scarcely notice
My grief is beyond comfort
Beyond the help of any
My irises flash yellow as another lightning bolt strikes
Another yell explodes from my throat
All those who lived on the plains have sought the shelter
But not I
The pain and grief holds me where I stand
The place where I received the news of the death of my sister!
The thunder is now my voice and the rain my tears
The wind is my breath which I inhale to cry my anguish to the skies above
A lightning bolt strikes near me but I barely heed it
For I have lost a part of me that I can never get back
She was young!
Too young to die!
Why?
Why!
Birthing was what had killed her and her children
The journey of life that was just beginning ended in death
I clutch my teeth, tasting blood as one of my fangs dug into my gum
Salt and water mix as I let my tears fall from my eyes
Rocks and other objects fly towards me
I pay them no heed, even when they hit me, some drawing blood
My grief has made me numb to the rest of the world
My body is no longer my own thus I do not care about it as I once did
Blood now runs from wounds that had been and still is being inflicted upon me
I let out a roar and it is echoed throughout the skies
Then I feel myself falling into the dark abyss
I felt nothing
Dawn came and the sun came out
The storm clouds drifted away to let life resume
A softer and comforting wind blows through the grass now
Peace and joy is once more in the air
But on a hill made of rock and grass
A lone wolf lies
He is still and unmoving
Blood cover his body marking where each wound lay
He was well known to the plainsdwellers
A good friend and a good ally
They had heard his voice upon the wind that past night
They knew they would never understand the grief he felt
The light in the wolf’s eyes are now gone
Though gone, one could still see what the wolf felt in his last moments
He is at peace now and it is evident
For a handsome smile seems to be on the wolf’s lips
Flowers now flourish where the kind wolf once lay
All identical in color and markings save for one difference
It is a difference that none can see even if he or she tried
It is a difference that will forever remain a mystery
