I looked around the dark forest, breathing heavily. I heard the pounding of paws running after me. I took a deep breath and ran as quickly as I could, rushing for safety. I stopped for a breath and was tackled to the ground by an unsuspecting body...
The Beggining
"Awe. She's adorable!" I wondered. 'Whose adorable?' Suddenly I felt myself being lifted up. I cried out for help and I heard my mother growl. "Put her down Sasha." I felt myself being gently put down on something wonderfully soft. Then I found I was being pushed by something cold and wet. I wiggled, trying to get free. But then I felt my mom's warm tongue kiss my head. I felt comforted by this furry creature. Problem was, that I couldn't see what was happening. I was totally blind! I suckled from my mother, feeling a few squirming bodies pushing up next to mine. I knew who they were. My brother's and sister's. When I finished nursing, I closed my eyes and fell deeply asleep with my mother and siblings warmth.
3 weeks later, my eyes opened and it was like I was a new dog. I scampered around, snuffling at rose bushes and digging in flower beds. I wresled with my brother and sister. I was the most mischievious and I wanted to do everything. I no longer nursed from my mother, I drank out of the water bowl, like the big girl I was. (Whenever I say that, my mom laughs).
I sighed and jumped up and shook my yellow fur. My brown ear flipped over. My wiggly nose wiggled, as I caught a scent. My black paws took me fast to a hollow, rotten log. "Ahh!" I screamed as the black and white animal emerged from it. It turned around to face me and snarled. I shrunk back as the animal stepped forwards. "What are you doing in my home?" The animal asked. I, as usual, ignored the question asked, and asked one of my own.
"Who...what are you?" I shivered. "A badger." The animal said. "My name is Badge and I'm a badger." I studied this black and white animal, and I noticed that when he spoke, he had an accent. I don't know wat type of accent, but he did. I smiled. "My name is...well....oh yea! My name is Myki! I'm a dog! Puppy actually!" I exclaimed.
Badge laughed. Then he turned serious again. "Now you better leave before you get hurt." I screamed and ran away.
Thinking it Over
That night at supper, I sat down beside Alexander. My brother. But instead of pigging out like I normally do, I say there, thinking. Pasha, my sister finished before I did. She turned to me and asked, "Myki, can I have your supper?" Before I could asnwer, Pasha reached for my bowl. "Stay away from MY supper!" I snapped. My mother gasped. "Myki!" She cried. "What have you done?!" Pasha lay on the ground. As I passed her, I whispered, "Weakling." Pasha tried to kick me, but I dodged it. "Good try, loser." I sait down beside my food dish and ate slowly.
"Myki?" My mother asked. I ignored her. When I finished my food, and tramped upstairs into the room that Pasha, Alexandrer, and I shared. I wiggled under the blankey in the wicker basket I used as my bed. Sighing sadly, I thought about what it would be like to live in the wild, like Badge. I closed my eyes and thought about it. The most I thought about it, the more I liked it. "Myki." I jumped up. "Mom! You scared me half to death!" My mom chuckled softly. "Myki. I wanted to ask you something." I stared at her, telling her to go on. "What's going on? I mean tonight, at supper, with you and Pasha?" I looked away, unable to answer.
"Myki." I looked over but not directly in her eyes. "Myki?" My mom said again. "Because." I finally answered. "Because I have been thinking alot about well, living in the wild. I mean, after I met Badge and the way he lived made me want the same. I thought it over so much and I decided I want to." My mom shook her head. "Everybody wants to once in a life time. But that still doesn't explain why you attacked Pasha today during supper." I nodded. "Yes it does." I said. My mom raised an eyebrow. "How?" "Well," I said. "Wild dogs have to fend for themselves. They have to fight for their food." I looked at my mom. She laughed. "I get it. Honny, by tomorrow, you won't wanna be wild." She kissed my head.
Then she left the room. I shook my head. "I'm going to be wild." I yelled silenty. "I made my decision. " I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
A Crow's Call
The next day, I woke up with Pasha beside me. I looked over at Pasha's knit basket. The basket contained a pink wool blanket but no puppy. I pushed Pasha off of me, not caring if i hurt her. Mama tells her everyday to sleep in her own basket and not come crawling to my wicker one. I stepped over her and went downstairs. I ate my breakfast silently until I heard the little girl that owns me come into the kitchen. "Myki!" She called. "Sasha!" I yipped happily. Sasha gulped down some toast, grabbed her book bag and ran out the door. I followed her.
She dropped her bag and grabbed a blue tennis ball. I happily tried to steal it from her but she was to quick. She yanked it backwards and chucked it across the yard. My ears and eyes on full alert. I scampered after it. But everything seemed to call out to me. I turned my head and ran towards an inviting rose bush. I threw myself onto the ground and rolled around in the fresh mud. Then I snuffled around in some tulips and dug up some old newspapers. I had hidden them not to long ago. My mornings are always so much fun. Suddenly I heard a noise .
It was all to familiar. I growled at the big yellow school bus that approached Sasha's front yard. It came to a rumbling stop. With a gasp, the door opened. Sasha kissed me goodbye and disappeared into the vehicle. As I turned to go back inside, I heard a sound. "Caw, Caw!" Came the scratchy voice of the old crow that lived in a nest in the backyard. "Caw!" It made sure I was watching and flew over the fence. It came back and tried to lure me over to the fence.
I followed it but stopped short at the edge of the fence. I had never been on the other side of it before. Ever. But I was sure the crow was trying to get me over. I looked under the fence and my gaze was trapped on the forest on the other side of the street. Across from my house. I looked up and the crow cawed again. He flew over the fence and into the forest. It came back. Suddenly, I knew what it was doing.
It was telling me I had to follow my dreams. The crow's call was telling me, I could do it. Without thinking, I started to dig. I fit underthe fence and ran to the forest. I stopped at the edge and glanced back at the edge and glanced back at my house. I thrust my head forward and ran into the dark forest.
Running Free
As I got deeper into the forest, I realized I had no idea where I was going. I was nothing but a simple house pet. A small unsuspecting puppy that had never been past the perimeter of it's own yard. But that all changed. Instead of turning back, I kept running. Freedom is what I wanted. And freedom is what I got. After an hour, I stopped at a cave. It was amazing how my small heart could pump as fast as an adult' swhen I ran that far and that fast.
I layed down, panting heavily. I shivered. I should have brought along my black blanket. I shivered and curled up into a small ball. The kept me warm for a bit. But not for long. I sighed and went out of my cave to look for something to eat. All I knew was that I couldn't attack anything till I was bigger. Much bigger. I walked around and caught some small field mice. But they weren't enough to satisfy my hunger. I fell asleep in the nearest cave and 15 minutes later, I woke up. My energy was regained and I ran around.
Running free was the best thing that ever happened to me. It was so much fun that I didn't notice that I was being watched. As I galloped around in the field, of mush from the snow and the tiniest bits of grass poking up, stood the scariest looking animal, watching me through the bushes. I tripped on my front paws and stumbled to a slushy stop, right infront of the creature.
I gasped and held my breath as the animal smelled me. He, she, it smelled my rear end and I giggled. It looked at me and continued sniffing me. I felt its hot breath on the back of my neck and it made me scared.
Finally, the animal sat infront of me, and whispered "A young german shepherd like you shouldn't be out in the dangerous forest like this." I was surprised by how low its voice was. I figured it was a boy. "Why?" I asked. "Isn't running free a right?" I asked. The animal answered, "To some animals, yes. But not toall. It is a right to me, a wolf, but to a pup, no." I was about to ask why again when the wolf thing ran off. I thought about why he said, I couldn't run free.
Getting Away
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't figure out what the wolf thing meant. I really wanted to know. I found my nose start to wiggle. I caught a scent and chased after is. Suddenly, I stopped. I saw the wolf thing talking to a small wolf thing. I edged a little closer. I heard small bits of what they were saying.
"Make sure....."
"of course."
"I mean it..."
"Pup"
"German Shepherd...."
"Sure..."
"Thanks..."
I dove behind a bush as the smaller wolf walked past me. She looked back at the boy wolf and winked. "I will make positively sure you get her. Dead or alive." I was about to freak out when the boy wolf said, "Alive. Bring it to me....alive." The other wolf nodded. "Sure. Faux." So Faux was the boy wolf's name. Then the other wolf was starting to wlk away, when I saw her pivot and sniff the bushes I was in. I froze. I screamed as the wolf brought its lips to a snarl. Its teeth gleamed white. The wolf yelled, "It's in here!"
Faux ran to the bushes and leapt down and grabbed me. The other wolf stomped its paws into the ground and growled. Faux dropped me and I got into a defense stance. "Don't mess with this puppy." I growled. "Or you'll pay." Obviously they thought it was funny. They laughed at me. "Grrr." I growled. "Stay away." I threatened. I said as they took a step forward. I turned to run but the smaller wolf stood in my way.
"Vixie, move." Faux stormed over to me and said, I told you before, you shouldn't be here. Now we'll make it so you CAN'T BE HERE." He bared his fangs and reached to get me. I snapped at his nose, leaving three red scars across it. Faux backed up, clutching his nose. Vixie tried to get me next but I bit her throat and she fell to the ground bleeding lightly. This was my chance.
I bolted out of the space and ran as fast as I could to the meadow. I took a deep breath and sped to my cave. Then I realized they could catch me by my scent. I ran to a puddle and tracked through it, covering my scent. I ran fast through the bushes and suddenly heard a voice, "Hey! Hey you!" I ran till I didn't know where I was.
I looked around the dark forest, breahting heavily. I heard the pounding of paws running after me. I took a deep breath and ran as quickly as I could, rushing for safety. I stopped for a breath and was tackled to the ground by an unsuspecting body.
Making A Friend
"What were you doing here?" Asked the white pup. I could tell it was just a little younger than me. "I was trying to get away from two wolves...." "Faux and Vixie." The pup interrupted. "Yeah. How'd you know?" I asked. "They chased me the first day I was here too. But I didn't come from a house. This is where I was born." I nodded. "And what type of dog are you?" I asked. "Dog?" She laughed. "I'm no dog. I'm a wolf." She said, proudly.
I could tell she was she, by the way she talked. I studied her. "You don't look full wolf." I pointed out. The pup sighed. "Alright. I'm half. Half wolf half mutt. Like you." I gasped. "I'm insulted." I cried. "I happen to be a german shepherd. I said. The pup laughed. "I was kidding. You don't have to take things so seriously." I laughed. "My name is Myki." I told her. "Tala." The white hybrid replied. At that moment I knew I had made a new friend.
And If not friend, then accomplice. Tala smiled at me and I smiled back. "I want you to meet my best friend. His name is Hakue." Tala brought me over to a black wolf pup. "Myki." I said. "Hakue." The wolf pup replied. Tala whispered to him and she and I walked away.
1 year later, I was a fully grown german shepherd. Tala was a full grown hybrid. Ever since that day we met, we'd been together. We'd traveled many days and stayed in many caves, but we always had eachothers backs. Tala and I were the best of the best of friends. As she and I were walking around the forest, I hear a growl. It was a growl all to familiar. "Tala, hide me!" I screamed. To late. The gray german shepherd with a goldish star on his chest pounced on me. "Myki!?" He asked me.
"Myki? Whose that? That's a funny name. Never heard of her." I tried to fake it. "Nice try sis." Alexander said. "I'd know your eyes when I see them."I sighed, caught. "I'm not going home." I growled and pushed him off of me and bit him. "Mom told me to find you and bring you HOME! She misses you a lot." Alexander screamed. I growled. "You're just a lowly shepherd!" Alexander shook his head. "I see. You made a new friend and you don't want to leave. I'll tell mom you love her." He turned to leave. "Oh yea." He looked over his shoulder. "I'm a wolf."
He walked away. Tala laughed. "What was that about?"
Meeting The Enemy
"My stupid brother." I appologized to her. Tala just smiled. "No problem." I laughed and reached out with my black paw. "You're it!" I ran through the field, Tala laughed and ran after me. She stumbled and fell. Her back feet his my back feet and I tumbled to the ground beside Tala, giggling like crazy.
"Wimps." I got up and glared at Tala. Tala asked, "Did you hear that?" "Yes. I did." I replied. We both looked around. Nobody was there. "Yellow mutt." I looked around. "Someone just called me a yellow mutt." I said, hurt. My feelings were crushed. Was I really just a dumb yellow mutt? Tala glared. "No one calls my best friend a yellow mutt except for me."
We looked at eachother and laughed for a second then everything turned serious again. Tala threw her nose to the ground and her paws took her everywhere. "Here he is." She pulled out a black wolf. I stepped forward. "Why are you insulting me?" I asked him. "Because. Look at yourself." I looked down at my furry, yellow chest. "What's wrong with me?" I asked. "You're hideous!" I gasped. "That is the last time you insult me!" I lunged at at him with bared fangs. The black wolf growled.
I felt the fur on my back stand on end. I lunged for the wolf but he backed up. Tala jumped in between us. "Stop!" She cried. I stared at her then lowered my eyes at the wolf. I shook my head, slowly. Tala pushed me away. "Don't get into a fight yet." I walked away with her but stared back over my shoulder at the wolf. I knew I had just made an enemy.
Revenge
I walked with Tala, thinking bad thoughts about the black wolf. Tala nudged me, and said, "I'm gunna go find some food." I nodded. Okay. I walked to a cave and tried to get some sleep in. "Ahh!" My eyes snapped open. I got up and ran outside. I sniffed around. I knew that scream anywhere. I ran through the forest and saw Tala laying on the ground in some blood.
"Tala!" I cried. I ran over to her. "Myki." She whispered. "I helped her onto my back and ran to the cave. "Who did this to you?" I asked as I gently put her on the floor.
"Mac." Tala whispered. "Who?" I narrowed my eyes and cocked my head. "Black wolf." Tala replied. "Oh!" I exclaimed. I searched Tala for her injury and found it just placed on her chest. I cleared it up easily. "I'm going to get my revenge on Mac. You know that Tala." Tala nodded. I knew just how I was going to do it too.
Proof
I wondered if I was really going to do it. I needed proof. Proof I was actually going to fight him. And win. I was so determined to win. I thought of nothing else. When Tala was better, she tried talking me out of it. "No Tala." I said. "My mind is made up. I can't keep letting these stupid wolves think they are better than me." I said.
Tala said, "Fine. I seee I can't change your mind. But I want you to know, you're my best friend I've ever had." She smiled.
I walked over to Tala and hugged her. "You to." Tala and I walked together for a bit. "So your friend's all better ugly?" I glared at Mac as he walked out of the bushes. "Don't f*cking call me ugly!" I screamed.
Tala backed up. I knew she was kind weirded out. "Word in the forest is that you're going to fight me." I stared at him. "Who told you that?" I asked. "Okay well I eavesdropped but whatever." I growled.
Mac laughed. "You know. I hope you enjoy disappointment. Because i'm going to beat you." Mac left and I turend to Tala. "I have my proof." I said.
Preparation
Tala looked at me. "You should be getting ready." I stared at her. "Yah. I guess." Tala said, "I'm really ssorry. If I hadn't..." I interrupted. "No Tala. It's not your fault." I said sternly. Tala shut her mouth and nodded. Tala took out a dummy. I pounced on it immediatly. I tore at its throat and bit its front paws.
1 hour later, Tala had to take out a whole new dummy and she placed in on me like it was attacking me. I growled and snarled and kicked it off. Then tackled it to the ground. Man I felt like a puppy again.
I glanced at Tala and she nodded. "Myki?" I looked at her. "Yah?" I asked. "What if Mac, is more prepared then you?" Tala asked me, concerned. "Well..." I didn't know how to answer. I guess I'd have to let fate choose.
"Let's go spy?" Tala asked. I gulped. I didn't tell her this, but Mac kind of scared. I sniffed around for Mac's scent. I found it leading out somewhere I hadn't been. I stopped short. I saw Mac talking to two different animals. They looked familar. Faux and Vixie. We watched as Faux lay on the ground, falling to sleep.
The Battle
I stepped out into the bright sunshine the next morning. Tala was already up. I sighed. Tala looked at me with a big grin on her face. "Are you okay?" I asked her. "Yes! I'm so stoked!" I narrowed an eyebrow. "You should stay here." I said.
Tala looked at me and laughed. "You're joking right? No way am I staying here. It's gunna be Mac, Faux, and Vixie against you. Im going! I wanna help!" I shrugged my shoulder. "Okay! Glad to have you along!" I smiled. I practiced my snarl for a minute then finally turned to her. "Let's go."
We walked through the forest for a little while, until we got to the open field which is where the fight will take place. "He's coming." Tala exclaimed. I jumped up. I watched as Mac walked out of the bushes. He had a devilish grin on his face. It made me squirm uncomfortably. He was up to something, I just wasn't quite sure what.
I shivered. I looked up into the sky and seen the beautiful sun that was there seconds ago, had disappeared behind thick, heavy, grey clouds. I felt a drop of rain hit my nose. The rain was coming down slowly then picked up.
I shook the wet fur out of my eyes. Mac stood infront of me. Our faces were so close, our noses almost touched. I growled and so did Mac. I bared my fangs. "Let's do this girlie-boy." I said, meanly. Mac laughed and turned serious again. We walked in circles, never taking our eyes off of eachothers.
I couldn't take the stall any longer. I lunged for him, just missing his neck. He jumped back. I crouched down, in attack mode. I growled and so did Mac. "Stay back." I warned. Mac narrowed his eyes. I could feel my muscles tense up and flex. Mac panted. I pounced on him.
I took him to the ground. My paws pushed his chest into the muddy ground. The rain poured down, dripping off my face. I watched as Mac tried to push me off but I bit him in the face. Growling, I got off him. I was suspicious. He was making this too easy. I was getting off when I felt a hard pressure knock me off.
Mac smiled evily. I was knocked onto the wet ground. Rain poured down into my face. I sputtered and stared up at the familiar faces. I blinked one. Twice. Three times. Faux and Vixie. They held me down on eaither side. Mac attacked me. After 5 minutes, i hung my head in shame. Vixie tightened her grip on my right paw. Faux bit me hard. Mac tried to bit me in the face but I turned my head.
"Ahh!" I screamed. Mac caught me across the eye. My eye stung bad and I could feel warm liquid run down my face. I looked up weakly. Mac clawed at my chest. I closed my eyes, weaker than ever. Mac told Faux and Vixie that they could go. The trotted off laughing easily. Mac was about to bite me one more time to finish me off, when I saw a white blur ram into him.
I barely opened my eyes. Suddenly, I heard Mac's shrill scream I turned my head in the mushy mud. I saw a white hybrid with black tips on her ears growling menacingly at Mac. Tala! I realized. It was about time.
I smiled weakly. Tala bit Mac in the face. Mac tried to hit Tala but she kicked him. Then she bit him on his paw. He howled. Tala body slammed him. She bit him on his eyes. I saw to white balls fly across the darkened feild. "Eek!" Mac screamed. I felt an instant vibe from Tala. She ripped out his eyes. Gross.
Suddenly I heard a slow whine. I turned my head and saw Tala limp over to me. Mac was laying in a puddle of blood. Not breathing. Tala helped me up. I felt more liquid roll down my face. On both sides though. I was crying. Tala cried with me.
I shook me head to get the rain out of my eyes. I saw blood. Tala reached up and gently put a paw to my face. There was blood dripping off. "You're crying blood. Your tears in this eye are tears of blood." Tala whispered. I cried ever more. "Don't cry." Tala whispered. "I'm not crying because I'm sad. I'm crying because you saved my life. I like, could have been killed. You saved me!" Tala smiled. More blood fell down my cheeks.
1 Year Later
I was 2 years old now and I had that big cut across my eye. I still had Tala who had my back whenever I needed her. She saved my life from being killed by Mac. I only had her to lose. Which would NEVER happen.
I loved Tala. I loved her as my best friend and as a sister. I started to cry and warmth filled my eye. My left one. I cry tears of blood and that's all I ever will.
