"I was running, faster and faster; but I wasn't moving far. I looked down and realized that I was a puppy, "What happened to me?" I thought. I heard yelps and cries behind me, b ut I couldn't turn around. All I knew was that I needed to run, so I did; eventually the cries ceased, but then a new sound emerged. The sound of dogs.... hunting.... me. I tryed to run faster, but to no avail. I was looking for a way out when I saw it, a old broken boat, there was water all around it. Water could cover up my scent I realized. So I took a deep breath and plunged head first into the freezing Alaskan river, I puppy paddled ( imagine that) all the way to the boat, climbed on and hid in a pile of old rotting blankets. The dogs ran right on by, and when they were gone I realized that I was safe, so I fell asleep right there in those blankets. However, I didn't know what awaited me when I awoke.
I awoke, rested and well energized wondering where I was. Then it sunk in and I remembered why I was sitting on this boat. I jumped up, looked around and saw something, cleaning with a mop ( Or at least I believed it was), it was an off whitish color with a little tiny tail, big caring eyes, and spoke a sort of English I thought with a slight Russian accent. " Goo'ed morning child, did you sleep well?" it asked me. "Yes sure," I whimpered without meaning to. He was a sort of bird I realized, and what was behind him, were those two baby polar bears?
"That's Muk," he pointed to the smaller one, "and that's Luk." he pointed to the extremely large one, "And I'm Boris." he said with a slight smile, "And who might you be?" he asked me.
I didn't respond, it was to wierd, this thing that I should already be eating for breakfast..... was being nice to me. "Hungry", was all I could say. " Oh, ok Hungry it is. would you like some fish?". I shook my head eagerly. While he was getting the fish ready, I attacked him. He tasted so good, and yet I knew that it was wrong. My mother had told me that I should always eat, but never when the pray had saved my life. Then I would be in debt to them. I released him and he rubbed his neck looked up at me "Now that's no way to treat a goose, who's letting you stay with him and his nephiews." I looked around for more geese, but there were none. When my gaze returned to him, he pointed at the bears, and laughed at me. "Did you think there would be geese?" he asked me. I honestley did, but I never told him that.
After I ate all of my fish, I went and ran around on and off of the ship with Muk and Luk, they were like brothers to me. I was an only pup, since my father had left when I was young I didn't recall having siblings, mabey he took them with him; I was always thinking that to myself.
My mother had told me that my father was a tall, strong, and heavy built husky. She also had told me that he was A sort of shade of brown, I can't remember what exact shade she said though. The biggest probablame I had when I went to find him was the fact that she nver said his name. My mother on the other hand, was a soft and gentle white wolf. She had the softest yellow eyes towards me, but to anyone else, I heard that they pretty much had a gaze that cut right through you and into your soul.
She was the reason I was here, now sitting with these polar bears who were scared of the water, and the goose who refused to fly with the other geese at winter time. She had told me to run, and to not look back. Now I was looking back over the rail, new snow had covered my tracks but I knew where to look.
She should be coming through those trees, right now. I kept telling myself but she never did. " Balto," I said as I turned to the goose, " My name is Balto.", he just nodded his head smiled and went back to trying to get rid of the ice on the floor of the ship.
Although it's been a few years now and I have my own family, I can't help but think, that one day my mother Aniu will walk through the trees, and give me a nice big wolf hug, she woulds've liked to meet my pups, Kodi, Dingo, Saba, Aleu, and the other two.
Oh, wait she has seen Aleu, but not Dingo, Kodi, Saba, and all the others. They are all so different, and yet they're very much alike, she would be very proud.
In a few years I should see her again, and she can even meet Jenna. That time hasn't come yet though, so I will remain on this earth until the day comes that she is ready to see me again." I was finally done with my story, and Boris seemed pleased.
"If only..... I could go back in time, and fix all of this." I sighed.
"Well, you can't so be happy with your family, and hey you've always got me!" Boris piped in, he didn't like the way I went into a sort of transe like state, when telling the story but he delt with it.
"Sorry," I told him, as I was coming back from my memories.
"It's only, I wish that she was still here, and that she had never died." I said looking at my giant paws.
"I know kiddo," he told me with his old faint smile on his face, "I know,".
"I just wish."I whispered, before slowly broking into a slow mournful howl, and somewhere in the distance a reply was made.
