By this time, the pups had reached a good age of two and a half years. Jay was the elder, a female who was a decendant of Balto himself, as were all wolves born of the leaders. She and her brother, blackfurred Tad, she and him were alone at the moment. Once more, the packmembers had left them for who knows what. She sighed and placed her head on his shoulder. Tad smiled. "I wonder. What did become of Nome? The packs, well, after you know."
Jay nodded. It had been the first thing they learned at pup-school. But they had learned not to speak and between them passed the silent dialougue of a pair who knew of travesty of ages gone perhaps. To enchance them into their false security, some wolves wove lies of caring and then they were hurt. Jay had no fur on her face whatsover.
And then another wolf swaggered up, tail swinging jauntily. "Hello srumps, take me on."He snarled at them, biting Jay`s ear."Noface." She stood, taking ridicule, watching, waiting. She watched the other wolf circle them, Tad whimpered and rolled onto his back. Then the male walked to Jay.
"Noface, lick my paw."
She did not move but snarled instead, holding him at bay with that sight of hate. He raised his paw. As he struck out once, she waited, twice, she waited, thrice...her maw tore open and she chashed the wolf like liquid metal. She was on his tail. Her maw ripped at his throat. He went down. Jay looked up.
In front of her stood a huge, muscular male. She snarled and she snapped but he grabbed her scruff. Jay growled again but the dog stood still. "Halt, I am Jebidiah."
Jay was released and she stood.
"Jebidiah? Leader of the lost Nome dogs?"
The reply shocked her to the bone.
"Yes."
