As dawn began to break over Nome, Balto suddenly woke with a start. There was a strange howling over the hills, Balto knew one howl from another and this was a distress call. He knew that somewhere out there another wolf pack was in trouble, the howling continued for a few hours but eventually it ceased.
Later that day Balto went into town to find Jenna, he received a warm welcome from duke and Jenna who were on the outskirts of town. He told Jenna about the distress call.
"it was probably just a false alarm" she said calmly "you and i know that a distress call goes on for a few hours"
"but this did go on for a good few hours" exclaimed Balto
"then it was probably the wind" said Jenna "you know how many storms we've had recently"
But Balto was convinced. He knew that there was a pack out there that needed his help. But he was suddenly distracted by another dog who was a darker brown who was watching him. But as soon as Balto saw him he scampered away. Balto shrugged it off and went to find someone who he knew would help him.
Kodi hadn't been a busy dog lately, he was just mainly lying around with Ralph and Dusty. When Balto entered the building, Kodi was pleased to see his father and he went over and greeted him like he was still a pup. Balto told him about the distress call.
"What were they saying dad" asked Kodi
"i don't know" said Balto "they were too far away for me to be able to hear what they were saying"
But at that very moment, Balto got the scent of another wolf. It was coming from the window, and there was the brown dog looking in from the open window. But once again he darted away as soon as Balto saw him.
"Who was that" Kodi asked
"your guess is as good as mine" frowned Balto.
As they walked outside, Jenna greeted them, at once she knew what they had talked about.
"so" she said "you're absoulutely sure that it was a distress call"
"Positive" Balto answered
"it sounded as though it was coming from the hills apparently" finished Kodi.
"like father like son i guess" smiled Jenna shaking her head.
As Balto and Kodi prepared themselves for their Journey, they went to say a final goodbye but on their way back they saw the brown dog again. He tried to run but Balto and Kodi chased him, they ran and ran until they had him cornered in an alleyway.
"Who are you" asked Balto
The dog tried to escape helplessly but he knew it was useless. He sighed
"My name is Samuel" he said
"and why have you been following us" said Kodi
"I come from the riverside pack" explained Sam "my pack has been threatened by several dangers but this one is man" then he fell to his feet and whimpered "please don't kill me, please"
Balto and Kodi exchanged glances.
"Why would we want to kill you" asked Kodi
"Because" whimpered Sam "I strayed onto your territory, I was alone and i was scared"
"so THAT'S why you kept running away" said Balto "don't worry you're safe with us"
Sam looked up at Balto and he smiled. Balto winked at him and he got up.
Later on they started their trip over the cold wilderness, they experienced the odd point where someone would slip on the ice and Sam would roll his eyes and help them get up. But when they got to the river it was completely frozen over.
"ok" said Sam cautiously "be careful where you tred and be aware of other animals which live on the riverbank"
"what animals" said Kodi
suddenly out of nowhere a wild grizzly bear jumped out roaring and snarling
"that animal" whimpered Sam as he ran up the riverbank.
"QUICK!" shouted Balto "UP THE BANK!"
"WHY!" shouted Kodi
"we'll go around it" Balto explained "with any luck it'll slip on the ice and fall right through"
"how do you know" asked Sam
"let's just say i've had experiences with bears and ice" Balto replied
So they did what he said and sure enough the bear slipped and fell through. They continued their journey up the river until they all heard the distress call again.
"my pack" said Sam "it's...it's UNDER ATTACK!"
they all ran towards where the howling was coming from and sure enough there was a wolf pack under attack by a man with a gun. Balto knew what he had to do. Cautiously he and the other two crept up behind the man and pounced on him. The man was startled but he gathered his strength and threw rocks, which missed Sam and Kodi but one of them slammed Balto hard in the chest.
"DAD!" shouted Kodi as Balto spwraled out on the floor unconsious. the man sniggered at the Dog.
Sam suddenly felt something he never felt before. He tried to stop himself but a deep surge of rage overtook him. He attacked the man whilst Kodi tried to stop the pack from panicking. Sam snarled visciously as he ripped the mans coat off. the man threw him to the floor and was just about to finish him off when Balto leapt onto his back and pulled him down to the floor.
"don't mess with the pack" he snarled and the man leapt to his feet and sprinted away.
Back in Nome, Sam couldn't stop thanking them both for saving the pack and when he went away, Jenna came to meet them.
"well have fun" she asked
Balto and Kodi could only agree.
