Whirr, Whirr!  Bang!  Akelah’s tongue lolled out and the whites of her ice blue eyes showed.  Just as she felt she had to stop, another bullet exploded just a foot in front of her.  Snow flew into the air as she did a frantic u-turn and bullets peppered the air around her.  Overhead, the helicopter laboriously turned around and sent out search lights, determined to kill the wolves despite the darkening Alaskan sky.

Akelah knew that her white fur might camouflage against the snow, so she lay down and held very still.  The whirring noise of the helicopter grew unbearably loud and Akelah’s very core screamed at her to run, go, anything, just get away!

She felt the warmth of the search light settle on her shoulders and instinctively knew that her ruse was discovered.  Leaping up, she prepared to continue her swerving run.  Then, a mind-erasing agony erupted from her shoulder.  White fur on her shoulder turned pink with blood and Akelah collapsed again.

How long she lay there, Akelah will never know.  The helicopter whined away and the blurry figure of her sister loped up.

"Sister Akelah, you are hurt!  I was so worried!"  The voice trailed off as the newcomer began to frantically like Akelahs wound.

Akelah lapsed in and out of consciousness, and she felt dizzy due to the loss of blood.

The smell of human and a growl from her sister woke her.  Akelah was far to weak to resist as the humans gently placed her in a covered cage, placed her sister in another, strapped both to a sled, and drove away.
