The full moon shone brightly with its surrounding sky covered in diamond stars. Rex sat outside his home and stared at the shining circle in the night sky. Soul sat next to him and also watched.

 ‘ It’s beautiful. Just like you.’ Rex said as he gave Soul a friendly glance.

‘ Thank you. I can see why wolves are so attracted to it,’ Soul said as she gave him a replying glance. Rex then gave Soul a look that seemed familiar to her. ‘ No Rex. I’m not doing it, not here. Someone will hear us, like the whole town.’

‘ OK. Lets do it outside of town so they’ll think that it’s just a pack of wolves.’ Rex said as he stood up. Soul did too and then they both ran to the outskirts of town. Once they reached the mine shack, they stopped and rested, but Rex didn’t. Instead he threw his head back and howled loudly. Soul looked at him and gave up. She sat up and howled too. Rex soon stopped though.

‘ Did you hear that?’ He asked as he lifted the right side of his head. Soul stopped too and listened.

‘ Yeah. It sounds familiar. Who do you think it is?’ Soul asked.

‘ I think I can translate,’ Rex said as he listened carefully. ‘ Rex… my… friend… who… stays…in…the…light! It’s Storm.’

‘ Storm? Why would he be here? Unless…he came to do something with you. What did you do?’ Soul asked as she became angry and worried.

‘ I called him last night and told him to bring the pack here so that I can tell them that I have decided to spend a week with them.’ Rex said slowly.

‘ Why did you do that?’ Soul asked.

‘ I just, just want to know how my ancestors lived and if I went with them then I would know. Humans say that if you want to learn, you have to do action and not do nothing about it.’ Rex explained.

‘ Tell them to, to stay here for the night and that you’ll decide in the morning.’ Soul said as she gently hit herself in the fore head. Rex then howled a reply to Storm. Soon six wolves came from the forest. Storm and Blue Sun were the first ones to come out, then Lightning Blaze with Thunder Claw, finally Grey Heart and Star Field came out. All six ran over to Rex and Soul. Soon everyone was saying hi to his or her friends.

‘ Where are we gonna stay for the night?’ Storm asked.

‘ Everyone!’ All the wolves turned their heads to Rex. ‘Follow me.’

Rex then walked into town making sure that no one saw them. Once they reached his house, they stopped.

‘ Sleep by my house. No one will see you as wolves, just strays. I’ll be back in the morning.’ Rex said as he headed for the door.

‘ I’ll be at the house round the corner if you need me.’ Soul said as she headed for her house. Once Rex was inside, he went to his basket and rested.

‘ What were you doing?’

‘ Mom, I was just spending some time with Soul.’ Rex fibbed. He knew that his mother shouldn’t know until the morning. He closed his eyes as Fly walked to her basket.

‘ Wolverine: Fear and weakness.’

‘ Wolverine? What does that mean?’ Rex asked.

‘ You shall encounter many creatures on your journey, but the Wolverine shall finish it. It feared by most, scared by few, and defeated by little. The Wolverine will bring great change to you.’

‘Mom told me that the Northern Lights did that. What can a Wolverine do?’ Rex asked.

‘ Many things can make changes in the world. Some are normal, but many can do anything.’

Rex then opened his eyes and saw his home.

‘ I won’t be seeing this for a while. I’m gonna miss it.’ Rex whispered to himself.

‘ You gonna miss what?’

‘ Mom! How did you hear me?’ Rex asked as he turned around to see Fly.

‘ I’ve got wolf ears not husky ones. What were you talking about?’ Fly asked.

‘ Well…follow me,’ Rex said as he led his mother from the inside to the outside. He then woke everyone up by kicking a pipe full of snow and letting it drop. ‘ Mom…these are the wolves I met when I fell out the sled and I called them to tell them that I’ll be staying with them for a week.’

‘ What?! Why?! You don’t belong out there and…and your father will go insane if you do it. Have you told Soul?’ Fly asked as she thought about the possibilities of what might happen.

‘ Soul knows. I’m doing it because I want to know about my heritage and this is the only way to do just that. And Mom…don’t tell Dad, please.’ Rex said.

‘ OK. I won’t tell, but swear that you’ll come back.’ Fly said as she nuzzled her son.

‘ I promise.’ Rex said as he nuzzled her back.

‘ Rex!’

‘ Soul?’ Rex thought as he turned around to see Soul running to him.

‘ Rex! Don’t do it, please. You’re gonna change and I like you the way you are already.’ Soul said as she stopped and quickly nuzzled Rex.

‘ Soul, I’m not gonna change. I’ll come back, I promise. Nothing can keep me away from home. I’ll miss you.’ Rex said as he nuzzled back. He then stopped and stepped away. Storm and Blue Sun were with the pack. Rex then walked up to Storm and told him his decision. Everyone then ran off to the forest, Rex took one look back and then turned away.

‘ I’m sorry Soul. I’ve got to go back inside before Siaira wakes up.’ Fly said as she walked back in. Soul sat in the snow and stared at the rising sun. He had only been gone for 5 seconds and she missed him already.

‘ Hurry back. I need you.’ Soul thought as she took one more

glance of the dawn and then went back to her house.

By the third day Rex had done a lot already, but he still missed Soul. Soul was the same. She had thought that the week would never be over. Everyone thought that she was ill because she wasn’t herself.

‘ You were my strength when I was weak,

 You were my voice when I couldn’t speak,

 You were my eyes when I couldn’t see,

 You saw what was in me,

 Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach,

 You gave me faith ‘cause you believed,

 I’m everything I am because you loved me,

You gave me wings and made me fly,

 You touched my paw; I could touch the sky,

 I lost my faith and you gave it back to me,

 You gave me the star that was out of reach,

 You stood by me and you stood tall,

 I had your love, I had it all.’ Soul sang quietly as she thought of Rex.

‘ I miss him too.’

‘ I hated saying goodbye to him. I’ve never done it before and now…now it’s changed.’ Soul said as she saw Fly sit next to her.

‘ Yes. I know, I had to say goodbye to my pups and it was hard for me. Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things to do in life. That’s what I’ve been saying for ages.’ Fly said.

‘ I know what you’re saying. Rex is a miracle. He’s done so much for everyone. He’s helped form a pack, he saved me from a waterfall, he brought Diamond and Cloud back together, he got Pablo to back off me…’ Soul said as she thought of what had happened over the past few months.

‘ Yes. He has done a lot, I thought that Gabriella would of done that or maybe Kenai.’ Fly said as she sat up.

‘ Whose Gabriella and Kenai?’ Soul asked as she looked at Fly.

‘ Rex’s brother and sister. Two 6-year-old girls adopted them.’ Fly explained.

‘ I wonder what would happen if they knew that you were part wolf…’ Soul said as she gave a wondering look to Fly.

‘ They’d go bonkers on Fang and me. Just like Aleu, that’s what Fang said about Rex when he wasn’t adopted. I hated thinking that he was like her and that he would run away.’ Fly explained.

‘ I need to go outside,’ Soul said as she stood up and walked out the door. Outside, she ran to the town border. When she was at the edge, she thought why Rex had gone. She had finally found someone who had had a hard life with the fact that they were part wolf. 

Soul then walked slowly to her house thinking that she should give up on Rex.

‘ If you’re not the one,
Then why is my soul glad today,
If you’re not the one,
The why does my paw fit yours, this way,

 If you are not mine,

 Then why does your heart return my calls,

 If you are not mine,

 Would I have the strength to stand, at all.’ Rex sang quietly as he stared at the moon and its surrounding stars.

‘ You miss her, don’t you?’

‘ Yeah, but I can’t go back. Not now.’ Rex said as Lightning Blaze came and sat beside him.

‘ I told you before; you’ll have to go back. Soul isn’t going to care about it.’ Lightning said.

‘ The deadline’s tomorrow, but I can’t go back. She’ll be horrified.’ Rex said as he dropped his dead.

‘ Try and catch some rest. We’re going hunting before you leave.’ Lightning said as he went back to the pack.

The next evening Fly and Soul were worried.

‘ He was meant to be back ages ago.’ Fly said as she walked around the room.

‘ I should go look for him. I know where his territory is.’ Soul said as she stopped Fly from walking.

‘ Are you sure?’ Fly asked as she looked at Soul.

‘ I’m part wolf too. I’ve been out there before and I can do it again.’ Soul said as she walked towards the door. When she was outside, Fly looked out the window.

‘ Good luck. Find Rex for me.’ Fly thought. She then turned away from the window and lay down. Outside Soul ran past Balto’s boat and into the forest.

Once she had passed the place where she met Fireheart, she knew that No Wolf Land was close.

‘ Fireheart…alpha of the Star Pack,’ Soul breathed as memories raced through her mind. ‘ Mother. Father.’

She then remembered how her parents met and how her brother, Joseph, had told her to run away to Nome. Soul then ran through the greenness of the trees and towards No Wolf Land.

 In No Wolf Land, Rex was chewing on a caribou leg. Once he had finished it, he decided to go and chase a snow hare. When he entered the forest, he saw a shadow running among the branches of the trees.

‘ Another caribou.’ Rex thought as he crept slowly to the figure as it stopped in a forest clearing. When he was only a yard away from it, he stopped and once he was behind it, he jumped onto it.

‘ Rex?’

‘ Soul? Is that you?’ Rex asked as he got off her. They both stood up and faced each other.

‘ What’s that on your face?’ Soul asked. Rex then turned his head to reveal a large scar across his right eye and down his neck.

‘ I got in a fight against a wolverine. It’s there for forever and a day. And that’s why I’m not at home.’ Rex explained.

‘ You thought that I would be offended by a scar? I’m not that shallow and you know it.’ Soul said as she nuzzled him.

‘ I guess I forgot that. Do you wanna go home now?’ Rex asked as he stared at Soul.

‘ Also, when you were gone, Pablo and his humans moved to Nenana.’ Soul said as she stopped nuzzling him.

‘ I should defiantly go home then.’ Rex said. He and Soul then walked back home. In the bushes, Lightning Blaze had been watching them.

‘ He listened to me for once.’ He thought as he ran back to the pack.
