The next day Jenna woke up feeling quite drowsy and dazed. She looked around, she was no longer outside by trash bins, she was in Rosie’s home with Balto sleeping by her side. At first, she thought what had occurred the passed night had been nothing but, a horrible nightmare, but, when she thought of it more, it had been much to vividly scarring and horrifying to be a dream. Jenna decided she would not tell Balto, she was much to embarrassed and proud to admit she had been over powered by Steele.

Balto interrupted her thoughts, “So, did that walk help you sleep better?” He asked with a smile.

“Oh…Ummm yes it helped.” Jenna replied guiltily as she stretched her front legs.

“Good to hear, I slept pretty well myself.” Balto commented before giving Jenna’s forehead an affectionate lick.

The day had been a long for Jenna. Guilt was stinging her painfully at every moment, especially when Balto was being affectionate to her. But, she remained silent, she would not let her dignity be shown when it was bruised.

“Are you alright?” Asked Balto, watching as Jenna stared into space intently.

“Uh…yeh..What?” Jenna asked, shacking her head as she snapped back to reality.

“I said, are you alright” Repeated Balto looking concerned for his lover.

“Oh yes I’m fine.” Jenna replied promptly.

“If you say so…” Balto said with a flicker of doubt in his eyes.

Jenna gazed into his yellow eyes; it was like an ocean of endless colour. She felt like she was drowning in them, as if they were suffocating her to get the truth out of her. Jenna looked away, she couldn’t bare to look at him and know she was hiding a rather large secret from him. She sighed, What’s more important? My pride or our trust?, she wondered in pain.

34 Days Later

Jenna was beginning to get highly nervous. She was gaining weight and her abdomen was bulgy. It was getting pretty obvious that she was pregnant.

“Jenna, I think we need to talk.” The hybrid said as he stepped into Jenna’s home.

“Umm sure.” She replied guiltily.

“I think you’re pregnant. I can’t believe I’m saying this but…”

“Oh I’m so sorry! I didn’t it was..” Jenna interrupted in a squeaked voice.

“Sorry?” Balto said obviously puzzled. “I’m glad! I’m finally going to have pups! I’m finally going to have a daughter or son.” Pride shown in his yellow, sparkling eyes.

“Oh, I…I can’t wait to be a mother. I love pups.” Jenna said with relief.

“C’mon let’s go tell the guys and your friends too! I’m sure they’ll be thrilled.” Balto added in before he went off in search of Nikki, Kaltag and Star. After he saved the town, they had become quite close and familiar with one another, unlike the cold and cruel so called friendship they had with Steele.

After searching a few minutes Balto and Jenna had managed to find and round up all their friends, including Dixie and Sylvie. Balto had told them in great pride that Jenna was pregnant and would have their pups soon. They celebrated with stories and casual friendly chit chat.

“So, Jenna dear, what are you gunna one of yur girl pups?” Ask Sylvie with a smile.

“Oh, I’m not sure…Umm I guess I’ll hafta think about it.” Answered Jenna thinking about how the pups would turn out.

She pictured a lean male but, muscular black, white and red husky pup. His eyes were icy blue like his father’s but, gentle like his mother. What a beautiful pup, she awed to herself. She shook her head, she couldn’t be fond of these pups, she just couldn’t! They weren’t her lover’s.

“Jenna, are you alright dear?” Sylvie asked watching Jenna stare at something that clearly wasn’t there.

“Oh yes…I was just thinking about what to name a boy pup.” She replied distantly.

“I can help you with that! My great-grand fathar was named Keitaro. It’s Japanese, I know. He and his master traveled a lot. So, his master knew many names from all kinds of places. The name means blessed, oh and he was.” She paused and drew in a short breath.

“He had never gotten ill; he had died painlessly and lived such an exciting life.” Boasted Sylvie obviously proud of her great grand father’s history.

“That sounds like a good name…” Jenna commented. She did like the name and the meaning.

It had been a long day. The dogs had stayed almost all night with their friends and had a good time with one another. But, as for Jenna, it had been painfully long and quite guilt filled. She would have had fun, if only the pups were actually Balto’s. If only, thought Jenna holding back the tears that wear quickly building up inside her. She was happy to be heading back home although; she wished Balto would leave her some time to herself, so she could cry her pain out. But, being the affectionate and loving hybrid Balto was, he stayed with her all night and slept curled up beside her.

30 Days Later

Today was the day the pups were born. Jenna had gone to hide under someone’s porch to give birth in peace. It had been a rather easy birth, considering it was her first litter she had done pretty well for herself. Four pups had been born, two females and two males. The first born was a black and white female, the second born was one of the two males, he was red with black ears and socks, the third born was a black, white and red female. The last born was a runt. Jenna was worried he may not survive but, her heart went out to him. For some reason, she loved him dearly before she even knew his personality traits. He was black and white with a tinge of red on his forehead.

Suddenly, a voice interrupted her thoughts about the runt, “Jenna? Can I see them?” It was Balto, he sounded excited and nervous at the same time.

“Yes.” Jenna replied with a gulp.

Balto slipped under the porch. He crawled anxiously towards his new pups. When he finally got to Jenna and the pups his heart turned ice cold with horror. These are not my pups, Balto thought with anger burning in his chest. He looked at them with sorrow. First at the black and white one. Steele, he thought coldly. Then, his gazes swept over the other two. Both had combinations of black, red and white.

“You betrayed me…” He told her at last. “You mated with…Steele.”

Balto spun around in furry and crawled out of the porch as fast as he could.

“Balto wait!” Jenna called. She was annoyed that she couldn’t chase after him, but, she knew she could not leave the pups alone. She began to cry silently beneath the porch.

While she cried she decided she might as well take the time she had now to name the pups. The first born, the one who looked like Steele, was a female and Jenna named her Blue Sky. She thought that name suited her well because she had been the first born that day and the weather had given Nome a wonderful blue sky. She named the second born, a male, Brooke. The last pup she named was the runt. She thought about what Sylvie told her. The name meant blessed, it was sweet but, when she thought about it, she had a better name. She would name him, Skylar. She was fond of this name. When she was sure these were the names her pups would carry, she lay her head down and slept with a grief heavy heart.
