The wind howled ominously as a large whire she-wolf crashed through a snowbank. Her fur was streaked red with blood, her ribs swelling for air. In her mouth was her pup, a brown male.

She stopped for a moment to catch her breath. "Surely they'd have givin up by now...I mean I'm out of their territory.." she said to herself. As soon as her sentence ended though she saw the silhouettes of four wolves barreling towards her and her son. Her eyes widened and she picked up her son and galloped away.

Aniu was running away from what used to be her pack.Her father, the alpha, had exiled her after he learned she had conceived children with a husky. He had killed his own grandchildren except one himself. Aniu refused to leave, which caused him to sick his strongest on her to drive her outta've the territory.

She ran with all her streangth through the blistering wind and snow, panicked. The pup whimpered in fright in her jaws.

"We'll be safe in a short while my prince" Aniu crooned to her baby. She loved him as much as her mate, Cobalt. They had met outside of Nome one night. They were smitten with eachother at first sight. Shortly after they had mated Aniu had found out that Cobalt was brutally murdered by a local pack of ruffians consisting of 4 males, the leader being the pride of the town, sled-dog Titanium. Her pup reminded of Cobalt so much...

"Give it up Aniu! We will kill you no matter what!" She heard a wolf growl from close behind her.

"Why? I am out of your territory! Leave me and my son be!"

"What the leader says we must do!"

"Karce is not here! Let me go and tell him you killed me!"

"Sorry doll..We can't do that!"

Aniu pushed her legs harder to try to gain ground. She could see the lights of Nome shine before her. "Just a little closer" But she tripped on a well-hidden log and her pup fell from her mouth.

"We've got you now!" The wolves yelled from a distance behind her.

Aniu lay at the top of a tall hill, her leg twisted. She knew this was her end. But she refused it to be her son's.

"Mama I'm scared" the pup cried.

" I cannot come with you any further. Go into town to live a new life...Without me..." Tears welled in her eyes...

"But Mama-"

"Hush...I will always be with you...I love you Balto"

"I love you too Mama!" Balto cried. He nuzzled her and licked her red stained cheek.

"Forever and ever" Aniu said as she nuzzled him. With one solid nudge she slid Balto down the hill into a snowbank. She tilted her head up to the sky and whispered" I will see you soon Cobalt" and lunged into the wolves with a howl.

Meanwhile Balto had been knocked out.

(The Next Day)

Boris the Russian goose waddled down the stretch of snow.

"Beautiful town, this Nome...It's a shame I will have to leave it soon.."

Boris stopped abruptly when he heard a soft whimper from a near by snowbank. He walked over to it to find a little bundle of brown fur curled asleep in the snowbank. It was too big to be a husky yet too small to be a wolf.

"Hmmmmm what an interesting sight. A young wolf-dog on its own. Say boychick" Boris said, poking the pup awake, "Where's your mother?"

"AAAAHHHHH!" Balto screamed in fright by the big goose that stood before him, leaping away. "Go away!!!"

Boris put up his wings in defense, "Calm down boychick! I say Where's your mother???"

Balto put down his head sorrowfly, "Dead"

Boris sighed 'Poor thing' he thought to himself.."Well...Whats your name?"

"Balto"

"Well Balto..Since your all alone I'll take care of you"

"Wha-?" But Balto was cut short as he was swooped up in Boris's wings and they waddled together towards a boat not far from the hill.
