Shasta watched her girl, Emily as she helped her mother put Halloween decorations on the front door. They were little stickers that hung on windows. The wacky witches were her favorite and the silly skeletons were Emily’s favorite. Shasta chuckled as Emily stuck a pumpkin sticker on her forehead. The cream colored husky got up and walked to the back door that had the doggy door. She slipped through it easily and walked around to the front of the house. Shasta and Avalanche one of the mail dogs lived together under the same roof. The two were sisters almost and when Avalanche wasn’t doing her duty or when Shasta wasn’t checking out Pirate they would always do things together. Sometimes with Dusty but mostly it was just Avalanche and her.

Shasta looked down both sides of the quiet street before crossing it. As she made her way into the busy part of Nome, she heard whistles from the boys. She sighed and kept on going, trying her best to ignore them. Except one call got her attention. "Well if it isn’t my pal Shasta!" Before Shasta could even blink, she was softly tackled to the ground with her favorite red husky, Pirate on top. Pirate chuckled and gave her ears a playful nip before he let her up. Shasta rose to her feet and gave him a soft shove. "Hey easy there!" Pirate spoke. The two laughed. "So what have you been doing?" Pirate asked.

"Emily’s putting up some Halloween decoration. I just came into the town to see how the Halloween spirit was getting around." Shasta replied. Pirate smiled.

"Ashley can’t wait until trick or treating. She’s going as a witch and I’m her loyal ghost hound." Shasta giggled as she could imagine Pirate with a white sheet and holes cut out for his eyes and ears. A very playful ghost hound. "So what’s Emily going to be?"

"She’s going as a princess."

"How about yourself and Avalanche?" Pirate asked. He leaned in a little closer and his tail started to tap at the tip as if it was counting the seconds going by. Shasta chuckled.

"Well I don’t know. I’m pretty sure Avalanche will stay home."

"You can be a ghost hound like me!"

Shasta broke out laughing. Pirate joined in with her laughing. "Pirate!" Pirate wheeled around to see Ashley running up to him. Pirate barked happily as he ran to his girl to greet her. As she stopped and went to her knees, Pirate covered her face in licks and his tail was going like 500 mph. Shasta chuckled before she walked closer. "Shasta!" Ashley gave Shasta a hug to. "I’m going over to your house in a few days to carve pumpkins!" Ashley spoke, the excitement was clearly in her voice. Shasta smiled.

"Ashley come on!" Her mother called. Ashley looked up. "Okay mother! Come on Pirate, say good bye to Shasta." Ashley gave one more hug to Shasta before she started to her mother.

"See you around?" Shasta asked.

Pirate nodded. "Have a good day Shasta." Pirate took off after Ashley, barking happily before sliding to a stop by Ashley’s mother. As the two walked away, Pirate stayed right next to Ashley’s side. Shasta smiled before she started over to see how Dipsy and Mel were doing.

Pirate was sunning himself on the porch of his home. He wasn’t really paying attention to anything until a clatter of trashcans from the alleyway awoke him. Pirate got up from his slumber and hopped down from the stairs and took a few sniffs. Someone was digging through the trash it seemed. The red husky walked to the corner of the house and peered around. He didn’t see anything. Pirate gave a shrug and walked out into the clearing before his eyes spotted a flash of white behind the cans. Pirate walked closer and took a few sniffs. Nothing was there. He turned around and gasped. Not too far from him stood a beautiful Spitz/Husky cross. She didn’t even look like a normal dog. She looked like an angel with her greenish blue eyes that almost seemed they belong to some mystical creature and thick white coat. He was surprised that she didn’t have wings. Around her neck was a dark blue bandana. Pirate spoke softly, "Hello. I’m Pirate. Who are you?" The dog did not respond. Instead she took off down the streets.

"Hey wait!" Pirate followed after her. He chased through the alleys of Nome until they reached the outskirts. Pirate was running out of steam but when he rounded the last corner she was gone. Pirate was puzzled, as there were no tracks in the dirt and not even a scent. Pirate couldn’t believe it. There was only two places she could have gone. First was to head back into Nome but she would have had to pass Pirate in order to do that. Or she disappeared to that old house that was outside of Nome and he was facing it. The house did not look friendly at all. Its porch was caving in. Window shutters hung by a single nail. Some windows were broken and the chimney was crumbling in. Pirate whined as he did not like what he was feeling. He felt he shouldn’t be there and felt like someone was watching him. A chill ran up his spine that gave him a horrible tingle. Pirate gulped and turned away back to his comfy home.

As he was walking back into town, he spotted the mail team about to head to the beach for a playful run and tagging along were brother and sister, May and Jay. May spotted him and barked. Kodi and Jay looked over to see Pirate. "Hey Pirate come and join us!" Jay called out. Pirate didn’t need to be told as he was already making his way over there. He barked happily to greet the team and siblings. As the group was making their way to the beach, Kirby was talking about the trip. Over time, Pirate and Kirby became like brothers not just because of Kiska, Pirate’s sister but also they realized when the chips were down they would always be right next to each other.

"Hey guys I’ll meet you there. I’m bringing Shasta along." Avalanche called out and dashed for her home.

"Alright does anyone have a leash to hold Pirate back when Shasta gets here?" Jay asked and everyone broke out laughing.

"Oh har har." Pirate said. But he couldn’t resist the thought of him and Shasta being together. As he listened to how the run was that day and Ralph complaining that Kirby had it all wrong, Pirate’s mind wondered back to the husky cross. He wondered who she belonged to and how she can leave no tracks behind.

"Earth to Pirate!" May blew in his ears. Pirate shook his head.

"What?" He gave a confused expression and everyone else laughed.

"Got something on your mind?" Dusty asked. Pirate decided he couldn’t keep it from his friends. Maybe they knew something about her.

"I’ll tell you when we get there." Pirate said. Soon they reached the beach and sat waiting to hear what Pirate would say. Pirate looked around at everyone. "Earlier there was this stray I believe digging through the trashcans. But she didn’t look like a stray."

"What do you mean by that?" Jay asked.

"Well she looked cared for and she had a dark blue bandana. Her built was small so she had to be a husky cross. Her coat was thick and white but her eyes were beautiful."

"Well what do you mean by beautiful?" Ralph asked as he laid himself down.

"A green blue that didn’t belong to a dog but belonged to some magical creature. Anyway I told her my name was Pirate. She dashed off and of course I followed. But when we reached the outskirts, she disappeared like mist. She left no tracks, no scent."

"Wow a scent that Pirate can’t track." Jay said but his sister looked a lot more serious. Which was very uncommon for her, as she was the jester. Her expression blank and her eyes almost lifeless as they stared at Pirate.

Pirate became a little uneasy. "What? You know something about her?"

"Pirate did you see a house that looked very not cared for?" Pirate nodded and he could feel that same chill keep up his spine. "Some say that’s the dog of someone who was killed in that very house. A young woman that was killed by her own lover. Her dog a Spitz/Husky cross was very loyal and would have given her life for her master to live. Driven in rage the dog killed her mistress’s love and soon felt that she should protect her owner even through death. Every night the dog howls in grief and vows to not let anyone come near the house. Anyone who does comes face to face with death and shall never return. It’s not just that that scares them, it’s her howl. A howl so terrible even ghosts would be afraid." May ended with her low, spooky tone and started with a deadly manner, "They say just seeing the dog is a sign that you will die soon.""

Ralph whimpered and ducked behind Dusty. Dusty became a little uneasy and everyone turned to look at Pirate. He wasn’t sure what to think. "That’s just an old tale to keep people away from the house. It’s floating around even more because of Halloween." Everyone whipped around to see Shasta and Avalanche. Shasta glared at May. May growled. The two glared at each other as the sun sunk closer beneath the horizon.

"Prove me wrong then. If Pirate comes face to face with death don’t come crying to me!" Shasta rolled her eyes.

"Oh please May, Pirate’s not going to die. No one is going to die." Suddenly, a blood curdling howled ripped through the silence. Ralph jumped and Jay hid behind Kirby. Kirby whimpered and Dusty nearly plastered herself to Kodi. May smirked.

"She’s coming for you Pirate. You’re cursed."

"Curse my ass." Avalanche spoke. Pirate chuckled. May growled. "Besides that could have been any dog." Avalanche said.

"I don’t know. Sounded pretty spooky to me. What do you think Ralph?" Jay looked around. "Ralph?" Everyone looked toward Nome and saw the figure of Ralph high-tailing it to the old factory shed.

"Look what you did May! You scared him out of his wits!" Kodi barked. Kodi and Avalanche were two people that May did not get along with. May gave an annoyed look.

"He’ll be fine." She spoke with an unconcerned voice.

Kirby got up. "I think I’ll be going on home. Now you’ve scared the wits out of me May!" May smoothly rubbed against Kirby.

"Then you can stay with me Kirby. I’ll protect you." Kirby growled. Even though it’s been a while since he last saw Kiska, he was still furiously loyal to her.

"I don’t think so May. Good night everyone." He got up and started to head back. Dusty and Kodi followed and not too long after the siblings, May and Jay.

Avalanche, Shasta, and Pirate stayed sitting beneath the pale moonlight. "It’s okay Pirate. It’s just a story." Shasta said. Pirate nodded. Avalanche sighed. There it was again. A howl so terrible that could have awaken the dead. "Who in what right of mind is making all that racket?" Shasta asked. Avalanche was about to open her mouth. Shasta narrowed her eyes, "Don’t even think about it." Avalanche kept her mouth shut. Pirate smirked at Shasta.

"Come on lets head on home." Pirate said softly as he rose to his feet. Shasta and Avalanche followed him, one on each side. Always with Shasta on his right, Avalanche was on his left as they walked into town. Some lights of a few houses were on as they made their way to Shasta’s and Avalanche’s home. "Thanks Pirate. See ya tomorrow." Avalanche said as she disappeared to the back door to get inside the house.

Shasta sighed and Pirate felt a little uncomfortable. He took a deep breath to ease his self. "I guess I’ll see you tomorrow." He said to her softly. The cream husky nodded.

She gave him a friendly nuzzle. "Good night Pirate." Shasta turned away and headed for the back door. Pirate sighed. With his head low he walked back toward his home on the other side of town. As he walked through the back alleys he did not realize that something was lurking in the darkness. A scent reached his nose and Pirate raised his head and sniffed around. A growl came from behind him. Pirate whipped around to come face to face with a very large dog. It didn’t even look like a dog. With its menacing claws and an evil glint in its yellow eyes, it looked more like a wolf crossed with a wolverine than anything. The muzzle of the creature seemed crooked like something broke it and it never fully healed. It snarled and Pirate growled, holding his ground. It advanced toward him out of the shadows. It spoke with a raspy voice, "What’s a morsel like you wandering the streets alone?" It started to circle him with its head low and its body swaying a bit as its mighty paws carried it. Pirate caught a glimpse of gleaming teeth as it had spoken. "Answer me." It said with its head only centimeters from Pirate’s head. Pirate nearly passed out from its breath. It was strong enough to knock a dragon off its feet.

"I was heading home." Pirate responded.

"Back to your cozy little home! Then run!" He barked. Pirate was about to turn as he fully knew that he would not be able to defeat him. But a firm command stopped him.

The creature looked behind him as well as Pirate to see who yelled. With the gleaming white coat, it was Spitz/Husky. Her green blue eyes yet again kept him captive. Her eyes glaring at the black wolf like canine. "There is nothing you can do here. Go home and never return." She spoke with a deadly tone to the canine. He snarled and she snarled back. "You heard me! Now go!" The black wolf cross did not hesitate and he walked past the white dog. Her eyes followed him until he disappeared to the shadows. When she turned back, she only smiled. "Good night…Pirate." She walked past him. Pirate was frozen and his eyes were wide. He suddenly just realized what happened and shook himself out of his trance.

"Hey wait a minute!" He called out but again she was gone with no trace. Pirate sighed before whispering, "Thanks." A silent breeze blew through gently and again Pirate felt that chill creeping up his spine. Pirate shook and trotted on home. His mind was wondering yet again about the white dog and her story but mostly the black wolf creature.

Dusty yawned before stretching out her front legs. She had a good sleep last night, as she did not feel very achy. She walked out the doggie door and looked to the sky. Wait a minute…the sky was darker than usual in the morning. She sniffed the air. There wasn’t a storm coming. Dusty headed back inside and looked at the thing that her master called a clock. She would have named it something better than that. Probably Time Checker for that was all the clock was good for. The mail run didn’t start until 6 and yet the clock read 4. Why did she wake up at four in the morning? Dusty shrugged and considering going back to the bed before a howl grabbed her curious side. Who was howling? Dusty headed back outside and looked around before there was another terrible howl to her left…too close for comfort. Suddenly, an awful stench came to her nose. She sneezed from it. She whimpered as she neared the end of the street and peered around the corner. Dusty gasped. There was that husky cross that Pirate must have been talking about. The dog turned to face her and Dusty had to agree with Pirate. The eyes didn’t look as if they belonged to a canine. The husky cross gave an alert woof before darting across the street and from Dusty’s view. Dusty blinked her eyes a few times then the story that May told made Dusty shudder. "I better be on my toes today." Dusty thought to herself as she remembered the part about the story of seeing the dog. She knew she was being silly but for some reason she was feeling extremely chilled and not just from the weather. She did not notice the yellow eyes watching her from a dark alley.

***

"You saw her?" Kodi asked as Dusty was telling about her very early morning to her teammates. Dusty nodded.

"Don’t worry Dusty we’ll make sure nothing happens to you." Ralph said hoping to cheer Dusty up. She smiled.

Pirate had been walking through town. Later Ashley would be heading to Emily’s house to carve pumpkins together. He smiled as he thought about Shasta. "Hey Pirate!" Pirate’s thought train slammed to a stop. He looked behind him to see Jay and he looked kind of worried. Once Jay reached him, the black husky took a few breaths. Pirate waited for his friend to speak. "Did you hear who Dusty saw earlier?"

"Husky/Spitz cross?" Pirate asked. Jay nodded. Pirate became concerned. "Anything bad happened?" Jay shook his head.

"Not yet anyway."

Pirate sighed. "Jay I need to tell you something that happened last night. But promise you won’t tell your sister. Because no offense I really don’t like your sister."

"Join the club." Jay rolled his eyes and Pirate chuckled. "Shall we walk as you talk?" Pirate nodded and when they began walking, Pirate told Jay about what had happened. When he was finished, Jay’s eyes were as wide as saucers. "Are you kidding me?"

"I kid you not." Pirate responded truthfully.

"I bet that was pretty scary. Sounds to me you really don’t want to meet that fellow in the night."

Pirate nodded. "I was so surprised to see her there."

"It seems as if these two know each other. The husky spitz and the wolf wolverine thingy."

Pirate busted out laughing. "The wolf wolverine thingy?" He arched a brow once he calm his laughing and Jay broke out laughing as well. "We got to give them better names."

"How about Angel and Demon?" Jay asked. Pirate chuckled.

"How about Wolverine for the black wolf cross and Angel for the husky?" Pirate asked. Jay nodded. Pirate heard his name being called. "I’ll talk to ya later Jay!" Pirate took off toward his home where Ashley waited.

"I still like Demon better!" Jay called out.

Pirate chuckled as he trotted away from the main street. Once he neared his home, he gave a friendly bark. Ashley opened the door with a smile. "Hey boy." She stroked his neck and he gave her a doggy smile. Mrs. Baker appeared at the door. "Are you ready Ashley?" Ashley nodded yes. Mrs. Baker smiled and with her daughter’s hand in her hand, she started walking with Pirate right next to them. His pace never quickened and his step never faltered as he looked forward. It seemed as if Pirate was being watched as just then he looked at her and gave her a doggy grin. Mrs. Baker chuckled before looking ahead and Ashley started to talk about what her pumpkin would look like.

Meanwhile, the mail team was heading in with the mail. Dusty was worried sick the whole way but now she was laughing at herself of being so foolish. No way was death coming for her. She ran along right next to Ralph and was glad she had Ralph as a friend. The team was moving fast through the forest and they were nearing the border. All the dogs could hear someone hacking away on a tree with their ax. The chopper came into view and it seemed he was almost done with the tree. A black dog sat by the chopper. The musher waved hello and the chopper waved back, letting his eyes travel from the tree. Kodi’s ears picked up the sound of groaning wood. Blaze running next to Avalanche barked, "Dusty look out!" Dusty looked up to see the tree moving toward the team and to be accurate toward her. The musher ducked down as the dogs pulled harder as the tree crashed to the earth, narrowly missing the branches full of needles. Dusty whimpered as she thought her and Ralph and maybe the wheel dogs could have been crushed under the massive weight of the tree. When Ralph looked back he saw the black dog smiling.

"Hi Ashley!" Emily exclaimed happily and then with a polite manner, "Hello Mrs. Baker." Mrs. Baker smiled as she let her child follow after Emily once her boots were off and her coat hung. Emily’s mother, June was waiting by the table. Pirate sneaked in and gave a joyful bark. "Hey Pirate!" Emily sunk to her knees to give the red husky a hug. Pirate chuckled as he watched them for a bit as they made up designs for their soon to be jack-o-lanterns.

"Hey."

Pirate whipped his head around to see Shasta lying on her bed with Avalanche’s bed right next to it. He flashed her a flirty grin, "Hey to you to." Shasta giggled. Pirate walked closer to her and laid down in front of her.

"Emily was nearly dying waiting for you guys." Shasta spoke and Pirate chuckled.

"Well trust me, I couldn’t wait to get here."

"To watch how they make jack-o-lanterns?" Shasta arched a brow.

Pirate chuckled with a bit of blushing. "That and to see you."

Shasta smiled before her expression turned sad. "Did you hear about…"

"Dusty?" Pirate finished for her. Shasta nodded.

"Nothing’s going to happen. I mean hey, I’m not dead yet. Am I?" Pirate got up and started to circle himself trying to get a good look at his body. "No missing patches of fur, no bones sticking out, no hanging piece of flesh unless I can’t see it."

Shasta busted out laughing at Pirate’s remarks. He smiled as she laughed. Once she calmed done, he just grinned. "You certainly know how to liven a place up." She spoke.

Pirate raised his head and spoke with a joking manner. "I’m not only the best tracker, I’m the life of the party." Shasta chuckled.

"Well as Avalanche would say it…"

"Ya damn right."

Pirate and Shasta looked toward the doggie door. Avalanche had just entered the house and finished shaking her coat. She smiled wide as the two huskies gave welcoming barks. "Avalanche’s back!" Emily squealed with delight as she hugged the gray husky before hugging both Shasta and Avalanche. Pirate’s tail thumped the wood floor with a sad look. "Ok Pirate…you’re my third favorite!" Pirate’s expression brighten and he gave a happy bark.

Ashley hugged her dog and whispered, "You’ll always be my favorite." Pirate licked her cheek and she giggled. The two friends got back up and started back on their pumpkins with their mothers cutting through the pumpkin. With a pan nearby the girls screamed, "Eww…" as they dug their hands into the pumpkin to scoop out pumpkin guts. Pirate ventured closer to the table and looked up to see what was going on. Big mistake. Ashley accidentally dropped some of the pumpkin’s inside on his snout. Pirate gave a surprised yelp. Avalanche and Shasta giggled as Pirate tried to sniff the orange slimly stuff as well as tried to get it off. Mrs. Baker came to his rescue and took the slime off his nose and put it in the trash. Pirate sneezed causing the two huskies to giggle.

"Aren’t you going to get a closer look Avalanche?" Pirate asked.

"Don’t you think you’re funny!" Avalanche exclaimed and Shasta chuckled. The dogs watched the faces starting to form on the pumpkins. Emily’s triangle eyes pointed up while Ashley’s triangle eyes pointed down. Shasta giggled as Pirate sneaked a sniff at a blade. "Don’t let that get on your nose." Avalanche spoke and she meant it as she thought back to the tree. Pirate gave her the expression reading, "You think I’m that much of a dork?" Avalanche chuckled lightly

They had finished their first jack o lanterns and placed them on the counter with the pumpkin’s lid. The huskies approached the counter and giggled at Emily’s pumpkin. It had a toothy grin while Ashley’s was a little scarier with its jagged smile. The friends had started on their second pumpkins. "Come on. Let’s go outside." Avalanche said, she needed to tell them. Pirate nodded and followed the gray husky outside. Shasta followed along next to him as her senses picked up that something might be troubling Avalanche.

Once outside they sat around in a circle. "So how was the mail run?" Pirate asked. Avalanche sighed.

"It was okay until we got near the end." Her tone was worried at the last couple of words.

"What happened?" Shasta asked. She became concerned and her face showed it. Pirate’s imagination was going wild on him.

Avalanche looked at them through sorrowful eyes. "A chopper was chopping away at a tree as we were passing by. The tree nearly fell on us. But it didn’t fall until Dusty was almost even with it."

Shasta gasped. "Was anyone hurt?"

Avalanche shook her head. "We barely missed it. I’m starting to think that white dog thing is true. If there’s another sighting we all have to be on our toes to keep an eye on one another."

Pirate sighed and started to think. "A tree? First that wolf looking canine and now the tree! What’s next that the white dog with the dark blue bandana will throw at us?" He shook his head. "Hopeful no more sightings."

Avalanche looked at him. "Why hasn’t anything happened to you?"

Shasta snapped, "Sister! It was probably an accident!"

Pirate shook his head. "No it wasn’t." He told them what had happened to him.

Once done telling them, they each had mixed emotions about the Husky/Spitz cross. "She came to your rescue?" Shasta asked.

"She had to know this dog well." Avalanche pointed out.

The back door opened then with Emily standing over the threshold. "Time for supper you two. Pirate its time for you to go home." Pirate looked at the both of them before giving them friendly nuzzles.

"See ya guys later." He said as he left the backyard. He walked to the front of the house where Ashley was holding her jagged smile pumpkin. Her mother carried the second one. Pirate chuckled as it only had one tooth in its smile. "See my jack o lantern Pirate?" Ashley let him sniff it before his tail wagged. Ashley giggled.

"Come on sweetheart. Let’s show Daddy your pumpkins." Ashley gave a squeal of delight as she walked next to her mother with both hands carrying the jagged grin pumpkin. Her mother carried the other one and Pirate walked next to them as if he was on a leash.

Shasta didn’t eat much of her food. She was worried about Pirate and Dusty and who would be next. Who will see the white dog next? She sighed and her mind was troubled as she went to bed. "Good night sis." Avalanche spoke softly. "Good night." Shasta whispered back. But her mind was in no state to sleep.

***

Ralph was walking around before he would head to bed. He was now worried even more for Dusty. His mind was thinking about the Spitz/Husky’s story. Was it actually true? Ralph had not heard what happened to Pirate. Suddenly he stopped. For some reason he felt as if he was being watched. Ralph looked to his left. Nothing and the same for the right, nothing. His eyes scanned the area in front of him and then he wheeled around. No one was about. He gave a huff. "I’m just being silly." He said to reassure himself. Ralph turned around to face the direction he was going and froze. It couldn’t be and he fell back on his haunches. Her green blue eyes blinked and her legs were ready to run from her standstill. Ralph started to back away. She followed slowly and her lip raised. A growl erupted from her throat and her hackles raised beneath her bandana. Ralph gulped. "I’m not going to hurt you." He spoke almost about to stutter. She growled again, her expression fierce.

"Then run past me." She snapped. Ralph was shocked. She growled again. "Not tomorrow…now!" She barked. Ralph scrambled to his feet and dashed past. When he got to the end of the street, he looked back and saw nothing.

"Now that was weird." He said to himself. As he turned to walk away, he heard a bellowing laugh and a horrible howl pierced the night’s silence. Ralph broke into a run, with his tail tucked between his legs. He didn’t know what was going on. All he knew was to get the hell out of there.

***

Today was Sunday, a day off for the mail team. Ralph had plastered himself to his crate. He was terrified from last night still. He heard paw steps coming through his alley. He held his breath and waited. It was Avalanche. He sighed a sigh of relief. Avalanche gave him a welcoming bark. Ralph hopped from his crate and stretched. "Hey Ralph. How are you doing today?" She asked. Her smile brightened his mood a bit.

"I guess I’m fine. Nothing’s bad happened yet." Avalanche’s expression turned grave.

"What do you mean?" She asked quickly.

"Don’t tell me you’ve seen that Husky/Spitz cross." Ralph and Avalanche looked behind them to see the pure brown husky known as Matt. Matt trotted up to them.

"Oh hello Matt." Ralph said sulky.

"For crying out loud, everyone knows it’s just a story!" Matt spoke. Avalanche rolled her eyes. She was now having second thoughts on the whole thing. "No way can a dog bring death. It’s just stupid and pathetic!" Ralph whimpered a bit. Matt gave a smug grin.

"Shut your trap Matt!" Avalanche growled. Matt glared.

"See ya later suckers." Matt said and walked away with his head held high. Ralph sighed.

Avalanche watched Matt leave. "Don’t worry about Bossy Paws, Ralph. Tell me what happened."

Ralph gulped. "Well I saw her!" Avalanche nodded. "She looked alright and then she started growling at me. I said I wasn’t going to hurt her. She still growled and then she said run past me. So I did and when I looked back, no one was there. But when I started walking I heard laughter and that same howl!" Ralph crashed to the ground and covered his ears as if he was hearing it now. He whimpered and whined.

Avalanche nodded. "It’s going to be okay Ralph. You won’t get hurt." She said to reassure him. Ralph nodded.

"Okay." He rose to his feet slowly.

"Come on. Let’s see if we can get the gang into a game of tag." She said hoping to cheer him up. Ralph smiled.

"I’ll ask the team." Ralph said. Avalanche nodded and she headed toward her home to get Shasta. Ralph trotted to the factory shed, knowing Kirby and Kodi would be there. As he walked through the alley he was humming a cheerful song to himself. He looked around him and saw the wood craftsman chiseling away at a sign for a business. Ralph kept walking along and suddenly a surprised yell caught him off guard. Ralph shrunk to the ground as the wood craftsman’s assistant nearly tripped over him. The box the young boy was carrying fell from his arms and the nails and two new chisels rain from the box like spears. Ralph tucked his nose in, just in time to avoid one of the chisels. Nails were scattered everywhere around him and he dared not move. "Don’t move boy." The young boy spoke to Ralph softly as him and the wood craftsman picked up the nails. The gentleman picked up the chisel that would have sliced either Ralph’s snout or eye.

He patted the husky’s head. "You were very lucky my friend. Now go on with your day." Ralph barked happily and walked out of the way and when he was on the street, he ran.

***

Pirate was resting in the backyard in the shade of the fence. Ashley and her mother were baking Halloween cookies for her class and he was not allowed in the kitchen. He sighed. "This is what it means to be bored." He spoke to himself.

"Well I’m sorry." Pirate whipped his head around to see the dog he nicknamed Angel. Her face showed nothing as she walked closer to him. Pirate scrambled to his feet.

"Hi there." He spoke with a cautious tone.

She then smiled. "Pirate right?"

Pirate nodded. "And who are you?"

"I’m Crystal." Dang his name for her wasn’t even close.

"What do you want?" He asked. He was unsure of how this was going.

Crystal’s smile disappeared. "To clear things up."

Pirate’s head cocked to the side. "What?"

"To clear things up. I’ve heard rumors that aren’t true. I thought that since you’re one of the most honest around I best tell it to you."

Pirate just gave her a nod. "Would you like to sit?" Crystal smiled and sat herself down. Pirate sat in front of her and waited.

"They say I killed the mistress’s love. That is true. But it was his dog, Demon that killed my mistress. So now we are even. He used to wander about White Mountain and I stayed here hoping he would never return. I howl whenever the pain that I carry has been too much. I stayed in my mistress's home, as I had no way else to go. But he has return from his dog fighting ways and hoping to have one last fight with me. It seems before he tries to kill me that he’s trying to turn every dog in Nome against me. That is why I hide and try to avoid others."

"Who’s Demon if I may ask?" Pirate questioned. Crystal just gave a small smile.

"You’ve met him. The wolf dog that if bothered will attack human or dog and does not think about the victim." Pirate’s eyes widened as he remembered that night where he met the crooked nose half-breed. "Anyway, for some reason just like his owner, he’s a jinx to everyone that looks at him, smells him, or even hears him."

"So it’s him that’s causing the accident?" Pirate asked and Crystal nodded. "To me it seems as if he was smart enough to start a story about you." Crystal just nodded again.

"Just wondering… why does he want you dead?"

"Because he feels as if his master is still living, a tortured spirit. To him, when I die his master will finally be at rest."

Pirate arched a brow. "Sounds to me like someone believes in witchcraft and things like that."

"I hope that has cleared some things up. Now I must go and find him to see what trouble he has conjured up next. I hope it doesn’t deal with your friends." Crystal got to her feet and started walking away. Pirate just blinked his blue eyes. "Until next time Pirate." Crystal said and yet again she was gone. Pirate sat there for a moment, letting his mind process this new information.

"Can I come back here?" Pirate looked to the gate in surprise and spotted white paws under the gate. He got to his feet and nudged the gate open. Shasta was standing there with a smile. "Hello there. Do you want to come play tag?" The end of her tail tip tapped against the dirt.

"Sure." Pirate said and walked closer to her. Shasta rose to her feet and walked next to him. As the two made their way to outside of town where the team waited, Pirate was thinking about Crystal.

"Pirate you okay?" Kodi asked as they drew near. Pirate nodded yes. "Thinking about the white dog?" He asked. Before he could get his answer, Dusty had tackled Kodi. Pirate chuckled.

"I’ll be it!" Kirby barked. Everyone scattered from the tan husky. Kirby laughed and launched himself at Avalanche. She dodged his leap and ran over to where Ralph waited. The game of tag last for a while and ended when Ralph plopped to the ground and gave a groan. Dusty giggled and the friends sat in a circle.

"So has anyone spotted the white dog lately?" Kodi asked. He knew about Dusty’s sighting but not Ralph’s or Pirate’s.

"I saw her and a chisel nearly cut my nose off!" Everyone’s eyes locked on Ralph and listened to what had happened to him earlier that day. After he was finished, discussing between others unfolded. Pirate did not take part in the conversation. His mind wandered back to Crystal.

Matt was strolling through town like always waiting for something to happen. As he neared the outskirts, his eyes spied the group of friends. He smirked. "Probably talking about that white dog."

"Oh you mean Crystal." Matt wheeled around to see a large, black dog. It towered over him and it’s piercing yellow eyes added to its menacing appearance. Matt didn’t show fear to others but this one he felt like a puppy. The canine smiled, showing off his pearl white teeth. "You happened to see her?" He asked. Matt just shook his head no. "You know the rumors have been spreading about her and well they say that sometimes she just goes crazy and will kill any human or dog in her sight. I know Crystal well and it’s about time to put her reign of terror to an end. What do you say? You want to join me?" Matt looked at the large, black dog.

"Who are you?" Matt asked.

The half-breed laughed aloud. "That doesn’t matter now. So what do you say?"

"I’ll join in and maybe then everyone will just shut up about it!" Matt barked. He was getting tired of the superstitious. Matt even though he held himself with self pride, really didn’t like everyone being so foolish.

"That’s the spirit. I’ll get you when the time comes." And just like that the wolf dog disappeared to the shadows. Matt blinked before giving a smile.

Pirate couldn’t hide it anymore. He aroused from his sleepless sleep and headed outside. He looked to the sky to see a nearly full moon. Halloween was just in two days and he didn’t like the thought of a canine that would randomly attack anyone, dog or human loose. He sighed. He needed to tell someone and show them Crystal wasn’t who everyone thought she was. Shasta. She would believe him and maybe stubborn Avalanche would come along with it. Shasta was known for her way at looking at a situation from all views. He chuckled. But that doesn’t mean she couldn’t be as fierce as a wolverine. Pirate took to a run toward Emily’s house where the two huskies lived. As he dashed through town, he felt as if Furies were chasing him. His sides began to heave his breath shallow as his paws reached as far as they could across the hard ground. But then instead of turning on Shasta’s street, he turned on his father’s street. He galloped to the house where Kaltag lived and stopped just short of the steps. Pirate took a few breathers to regain his breath. He then raised his head and walked up the steps. The curtains were closed and that meant Pirate couldn’t peer in. The red husky began to scratch at the door. He thought he heard movement from inside and waited. Nothing and Pirate scratched again. He heard the sound he was hoping for, paws treading across the floor. A tan snout stuck through the doggy door and took a few sniffs then Kaltag’s jaws opened. "Come on in son." The tan snout withdrew. Pirate slipped through the door with ease and his eyes had to readjust to the darkness. Kaltag had walked to the kitchen to the window where the moonlight shined through. Pirate walked closer. "Now what’s got your harness in a knot?" Kaltag asked.

"Have you heard stories about a Spitz/Husky cross?"

Kaltag thought about it for a minute. "Yesterday Star was talking about something like that. The dog that killed the mistress love and is cursed or something like that."

Pirate sighed. He recounted the tale to his dad and then describing each of the events that happened to him, Ralph, and Dusty. Kaltag gave a shocked expression. "Jeez…that was a close call. So close even a fly couldn’t fly through or…" Pirate gave him a please-don’t-start-rambling-on-right-now look. Kaltag hushed himself. "Go on…"

"Well anyway she came up to me and told me the truth." Pirate told what had happened earlier that day. "I want to help her in whatever way." Kaltag gave a concerned look.

"But try not to find yourself in a fight that could cost your life." Pirate nodded.

"I’m going to the house with Shasta and Avalanche if they come. You and I can’t be the only ones who know the truth."

"Then I’m coming with you. I want to be on the upbeat of things to you know." Pirate smiled at his dad. "Lead the way." The two headed out into the night to Emily’s at a trot. Once to the comfy home, Pirate and Kaltag sneaked to the back of the small house. When they reached the gate, Pirate slipped his nose under the latch and pushed it up. The gate creaked open a bit and the red husky dashed inside. "You sure are handy with that nose son." Kaltag said as he slipped through the gate quietly. Pirate chuckled as he waited by the back door. "You sure they can hear you?" Kaltag asked as Pirate scratched at the door a few times.

"They’ll hear us, especially Avalanche." Pirate smiled and Kaltag had to smirk. Suddenly, the two could hear paw steps coming closer. Pirate backed a few steps away as the gray head of Avalanche emerged from the doggy door.

"Pirate! What are you doing here?" She snapped. Apparently, Avalanche wasn’t in the nicest mood about her sleep being disturbed.

"Hi there Avalanche." He spoke cheerfully trying to cheer her up. It didn’t work. She growled. "May we come in? It is urgent." He asked.

"We?" Avalanche wondered then her blue eyes fell on Kaltag. "I’m so sorry Kaltag, I didn’t see you standing there." She looked at Pirate again. There was something in his eyes, like a haunting shadow or an innocent glint of light. Whatever it was, it held the urgent thoughts. "Well if it’s urgent, come on in."

"Thank you." Pirate spoke softly. She smiled before pulling her front body back through the door to let the other huskies in. Kaltag entered first and as Pirate was walking through the door, Shasta was arousing from her sleep.

"Who is it?" Shasta asked before giving a yawn.

"I’m a little gremlin ready to pounce on your dreams." Pirate responded. Shasta gave a chuckle.

"Very funny Pirate." Pirate chuckled. Shasta got up and led the three to the living room, where the bits of the fire were slowly dying.

As they sat down around in a circle, Avalanche asked, "So what’s so urgent?" Shasta’s head snapped to attention. Pirate sighed.

"The white dog, Spitz/Husky cross isn’t causing the bad luck." He waited for a response and there was none. "It’s the black wolf dog. He’s savage and will not think once about attacking anything, canine or man. For some reason which I believe his negative attitude is causing such bad luck to others."

"So you’re saying it’s this black wolf dog known as Demon is the one causing all the trouble? What makes you think this? Cuz every time she pops up, bad things happen to good people!" Avalanche spoke harshly. Shasta shot her a hard glare for speaking so harshly.

"True but Pirate how do you know this?" Shasta asked.

Pirate sighed and glanced over to his dad. Kaltag nodded. Pirate raised his head. "I have spoken to the white dog." Avalanche gasped and Shasta gave an oh. "Her name is Crystal. She does not mean harm to anyone except Demon. Demon killed her owner and so she attacked his. Demon enraged at her, apparently vowed to himself to one day kill Crystal and hope to rid himself of his lost owner."

"How will this help?" Avalanche spoke. Shasta was thinking about it, the new information treading in her mind.

"Don’t you see Avalanche?" Avalanche looked at Shasta. Shasta rose to her feet. "Demon is causing the bad luck as to what Pirate said, his nasty attitude. Also Pirate you mentioned to rid himself of his lost owner?" Pirate nodded. "Demon if I’m correct, still feels fiercely loyal to his owner and he thinks that killing Crystal will finally let his master peaceful rest."

Everyone in the room was confused at what Shasta just said. "You lost me on the second sentence." Kaltag spoke. Shasta just sighed. Pirate had always been amazed at how quick of a mind Shasta had.

Shasta explained the theory and finally some heads were nodding in agreement. "But do you know when he will strike?" Avalanche asked. Suddenly, an eerie howl floated on the chilly wind. Pirate walked cautious to the window, wondering what he would see or would he see anything. He reared on his back legs and placed his paws on the sill. As Pirate peered through the glass, he saw nothing at first then he saw him. When he walked, his shoulder blades could be seen under the skin. Some of his ribs were showing and he had some flesh missing from his left hind leg, something Pirate didn’t notice when he first met him. Demon’s neck level with back, his piercing yellow eyes, shifted from side to side. Already two dogs were with him, and out of the alley another joined him.

"I think you need to come look at this." Pirate spoke without taking his eyes off the wolf dog. Kaltag rushed to the window and spotted them.

"Man he’s a real ugly son of a…"

"Hey!" Avalanche snapped.

Kaltag gave her an annoyed look. "I was going to say feline." Kaltag moved out of the way so Shasta could see. She gasped.

"Do you think he’s gathering a small army?" She asked. Once Avalanche heard army, she shoved herself onto the window.

"Man you were right Kaltag! I bet he wasn’t the most friendliest when he was a pup." Avalanche exclaimed. Pirate’s thoughts were racing. What could they do? How could they warn her? How could they find Crystal? He suddenly snatched an idea.

"Avalanche and Shasta! Gather up the mail team. Kaltag find any dog that’s awake and not taking forces with Demon." Pirate put his front paws back on the floor.

"And where do you think you’re going?" Shasta asked.

"I’m going to warn Crystal. And it seems we’re going to need all the help we can get." He replied. The other three looked at each other.

"Son I don’t think it’s a good idea." Kaltag spoke. Pirate looked at his father.

"Do you want a dog like Demon, running around on Halloween, terrorizing children, dogs, and everything else?" Kaltag looked a little ashamed.

"I see the point."

Pirate walked to the back door. "Now come on, we got a plan. Stick to it. Bring all the dogs you can round up and meet me at that old shack, where Crystal lives." Before anyone could object, the red husky was out the door and dashing down the street the other way from Demon.

Kaltag looked at the two. "Now you heard Pirate. Let’s get to it!" Avalanche barked and Shasta smiled. The three headed outside and went their separate ways. Avalanche galloped to the home of Kodi and Kirby. Shasta went down the alley to where Ralph resided. As she got to Ralph’s box, she slowed to a walk to regain some breath from her hard running. "Ralph?" Ralph was sound asleep, snoring loudly. She sighed and whispered a bit louder, "Ralph." He didn’t budge. Shasta nudged his paw. Ralph gave a snort and tucked his paw under him, without opening his eyes. Shasta growled and yelled, "Ralph!" Ralph startled awake.

"What did I miss? Uh?" He looked at Shasta before giving a yawn. "What is it Shasta?"

"Ralph you have to come quick! We got to pick up Dusty and get going!" He arched a brow at her.

"Why?"

Shasta growled. "There’s no time to explain. Someone needs our help!" Once she said help, Ralph stood to his feet and jumped to the ground.

"You said we have to pick up Dusty?" He asked and Shasta nodded. Without another word, the two started off at a run to Dusty’s which wasn’t far.

***

Pirate looked up at the rickety shack as he stood 10 yards from it. He swallowed his fear as he thought back to the chill he would feel. He felt the chill a little but he shook it off. He raised his head and howled. Pirate waited and then his ears picked up the sound of creaking wood. His ears perked as his eyes were locked onto the front of the house. "Pirate?" Pirate’s head whipped to the porch on the right, where the white female stood. Crystal hopped to the ground and walked closer, clearly surprised to see him here. "What are you doing here?" She asked as she came closer. Crystal stopped two feet from him.

"Crystal, you’re in danger! Demon is gathering a small force to kill you. My friends will be here soon to help." Pirate spoke quickly.

Crystal looked at him with a nonchalant expression. She sighed as she looked at her home. She turned her head back around to face the red husky. "Enough blood has been spilled on this ground. Demon may kill me for his last battle."

Pirate’s jaw dropped. "No he can’t kill you!"

She barked sharply. "I’m tired of living. I have nothing to live for. I have lived in fear my whole life."

Pirate spoke, "There is always something to live for Crystal. You may not know it, but people do care for you. And when this is done, we’ll find you a new home." Crystal just looked at him with a blank stare not about to say anything. Pirate looked away and watched Nome. His eyes spotted a pack of dogs running up the hill toward them. Crystal growled but Pirate did not look concerned. His nose told him it was the mail team. Crystal stopped her growling as she noticed his calm attitude.

Kodi was the first to them. He panted as he looked at Crystal. Kirby with Shasta soon followed. The rest of the team joined up on the hill. Crystal became uneasy and she stood behind Pirate. "What is this about?" Blaze asked.

"It’s her!" Kirby called out. Pirate barked loudly to gain their attention. They snapped to attention.

"This is Crystal." She just gave a small smile. Pirate stepped forward. "She’s the one keeping Demon back. Remember him?" Whispers floated through the pack. "Anyway, he’s causing the mishaps not Crystal. But Demon has set Crystal up. Demon will do whatever he can to kill Crystal."

"Why?" Ralph asked.

Shasta stepped forward and explained Demon’s reasoning. Before everyone could voice their own opinion, barks from the bottom on the small hill grabbed their attention. Everyone looked that way to see a small troop of dogs led by Kaltag. Pirate smiled. When Kaltag neared, Pirate gave him a smile. Kaltag smiled back. As the canines gathered around, enclosing Pirate and Crystal in the middle, Crystal whimpered. Pirate touched her shoulder in comfort. She gave him a weak smile. "Alright everyone quiet! Listen to Pirate!" Kirby bellowed. Silence blanketed the now large pack. Yet again Pirate told the real deal to the dogs.

"Is that clear to everyone?" Pirate asked. Most heads nodded. "Good." Now Pirate took the time to look around at everyone. At once he spotted Balto and Jenna. Nikki and Star were waiting with a red Balto which Pirate thought that was Dakota, Balto’s other son. Most of the dogs he saw them around town but never really talked to. He made a checklist in his mind to at least meet them some time. Then he spotted a strange sight, a glum Jay. Pirate walked closer to his friend. "Jay what’s wrong?" He asked.

Jay looked up at him and sighed. "May joined up with Demon. I’m going to have to go against her when we fight."

Pirate sighed, "Don’t worry we won’t let it get that far. We’ll try our best to prevent blood shed." Jay smiled a bit. The white muzzled husky rose to his feet and Pirate smiled at him. Then Jay saw her. Crystal was speaking to a few dogs, her voice steady.

"That’s Crystal?" Jay asked. Pirate nodded. Crystal closed her eyes, brought her head around to face them and reopened them. Jay’s bottom jaw dropped as her eyes locked on his. She smiled. Pirate chuckled.

"Why don’t you go up and talk to her?" Pirate asked his friend with a smile. Jay gasped at him.

"Are you crazy? I can’t talk to a beauty like her!" Jay’s head again faced Crystal and now Jenna was talking her to. Jay smiled at the white crossbreed. Pirate was right about her eyes. But they were beautiful, like little jewels in pure white snow.

Pirate smirked. He said as he was walking away, "You know you want to." Jay growled a bit and sat, watching Crystal the whole time. Every time she looked at him, he quickly looked away. As Jay was looking away, he was acting like he was scouting out the hill bottom with his eyes.

"Hello there." Jay nearly jumped from the sweet melodic voice. He faced the source only to find Crystal. He cleared his throat and sat in the position of a gentleman, hoping to impress her.

"Hello there to you to." Jay replied. Crystal smiled.

"I spotted you standing over here with Pirate. You looked sad. What is wrong?" Crystal asked.

Jay sighed. "My sister joined up with your enemy, Demon. I hope we don’t have to fight."

Crystal gave him a nuzzle, "I hope for your sake we won’t have to fight." When she touched him, Jay was not sure how to react so he just gave her a quick nuzzle back. He could feel himself blushing. She withdrew her muzzle from under his chin and she looked into his brown eyes. They stood there, looking at each other so close that Jay could nearly smell Crystal’s breath.

"Hey you two lovebirds!" Jay and Crystal looked to the call. Nikki barked. "They’re coming!"

Crystal looked at Jay one last time and he at her. "We heard Nikki." Jay spoke and he walked closer to the pack. Crystal stayed back. She felt warmth and it wasn’t just from her bandana. She sighed before she weaved her way to the front of the 17-dog pack.

There was Demon, his eyes seemed more frightening under the light of the near full moon. He was leading his pack up the hill toward them. He was a black leopard striding toward them closer and closer.

"There’s only 12 dogs with him." Dusty spoke as she had finished counting his troops. "13 against 17." She added. Even though they had more canines, Pirate still felt uneasy.

Demon’s pack stopped at least 100 yards away from Crystal’s pack. Demon stepped forward. The wolf dog grinned a wicked smile. Crystal stepped forward and held her head proud. "Well looks as if you heard." Demon spoke loudly. Crystal just growled. He gave a snort. "Well then you just made my night even more enjoyable." Demon started to advance slowly and his pack followed. Jay tried to find his sister and then he spotted her. May was walking next to Demon. Jay then realized the brown husky next to his sister. Matt? There was no lie about who it was. Crystal looked at the dogs that had come for her. They were about to lose blood over her.

Crystal sighed. Her mind was trying to think about the situation and then Jay had found his way into her mind. Crystal’s eyes flew open and laid on Jay but Jay was focusing on a brown and white husky. "That must be May." Crystal thought. She then stepped forward another step and let a lone song flow from her throat. Soon others joined her song with their own. Their song rippled across the ground to Demon’s pack. Some of the dogs stopped their walking as they realized some of their friends were on the other side. Demon stopped and gave a puzzled expression. He chuckled. "Your songs can’t stop me Crystal!" He shouted.

Crystal stepped closer. "I know but I also know that I’m about to challenge you in a one on one fight." Gasps and whispering ran wild through both packs.

Jay stepped closer to the white husky cross. "What are you doing?" He hissed.

Without looking at him, she answered "Doing what’s right." Crystal strode forward out into the open between the two groups. She stopped and spoke to everyone, "Enough blood has been spilled on this haunted ground. No more is needed. Head back to your cozy homes if you believe this is foolish. Do it if you want to live and if you want to die out here on this forbidden ground, that is your problem." Crystal waited. For a minute no one moved and then two dogs on Demon’s side came out into the middle. They looked around before starting to head back home. Three more from Demon’s side followed the first two.

"Wait! Where you going you whimpering cowards! Get back here and let’s finish off this spirit once and for all!"

"Demon you are the evil spirit! Now come out here and finish what you started!" Crystal yelled. She stood firm not showing any fear. Canines on both sides waited to see what would happen next. Eagerness or nervousness tugged at each of them.

Demon snarled and walked forward. Crystal smirked. Demon stopped two feet from her and for a moment they glared at each. Jay was tensed. Why was she doing this?

"One shall stand…" Crystal started.

"And one shall fall." Demon finished it. The wolf dog lunged at her and Crystal fell to the ground. He bit at her leg before she slashed at his face. Demon let out a yelp. He was shoved to the ground but he quickly knocked the lighter dog off him. Crystal crashed on her right side and snarled loudly at Demon. Demon responded with his own and snarl and took a bite at her leg again. He missed as she scrambled to her feet and lunged at his back. Crystal bit down hard on his shoulder. Demon growled and threw Crystal off of him. She gave a yelp as she hit the ground again.

Jay whimpered as he watched the fight. Pirate wondered why Crystal was getting herself bruised up when her group of 20 dogs could have helped her. With Crystal’s back to Demon’s group, they fought each other and Crystal’s strength was not as great as Demon’s. Shasta was watching the two brawl then her eyes spotted movement on the other side. One of Demon’s dogs was creeping quietly behind Crystal. Shasta jumped forward. "Shasta!" Pirate called out. Shasta threw herself at the stray knocking the dog to the ground. Pirate sprinted forward. He saw that another dog was about to attack Shasta but a growl from someone stopped him. Matt had growled at the dog to keep him back. Pirate slid to a stop. The brown husky grabbed the stray by the tail and dragged him from under Shasta. The dog yelped and quickly once free, returned to the line. Shasta got to her feet and was about to dash back over to her pack but Matt stood in her way. "Matt move." Shasta demanded. Matt instead shoved her into Demon’s pack. "Shasta!" Pirate called and before he could run to her rescue, Dakota grabbed hold of his tail. Pirate yelped and wheeled around to face his captive. Dakota’s expression told nothing.

"Wait Pirate…" Pirate growled but did as Dakota said.

Crystal was badly bruised. She was bleeding many places and her blood stained Demon’s teeth. Crystal laid on the ground, her sides heaving. Demon bent his head low as if to snap her neck. Snap her neck, he did not. Instead he grabbed hold of her bandana and slid it off her neck and over her head. The dark blue bandana captive to his jaws. His laugh bellowed. He turned to face Crystal’s supporters. "See what your leader is? She is weak! Crystal is the true reasons of the misfortune! Now I, Demon appoint myself leader of this town’s dogs. You only answer to me and no one else! What you do is what I want you to do! Do I make myself clear!" No one moved.

Demon smiled, his yellow eyes full of pride and greed. "Now I must need a queen at my side…" He looked over his pack and his eyes fell on Shasta. The other dogs around her cleared a path for the black wolf dog. He approached slowly and grinned at the cream husky. Shasta gulped. "Hello there." Demon spoke in a voice so soft it was unnatural for him. Pirate growled deeply. Demon came closer and Shasta would have moved away but she knew the dogs behind her would still push her forward. Demon raised his head and let the bandana slip over her head. Shasta adjusted it and looked back up into the crooked muzzle face of Demon. "Follow me." He turned around and Shasta obeyed. Demon stood right behind Crystal with Shasta at his side. Shasta shot Pirate a get-me-out-of-here look. He sighed and then he looked over at Jay. The brown eyes of Jay were at the brim with tears.

"Time to finish off your unworthy leader." Demon spoke in a deadly tone. Crystal’s eyes slid to where she could see Demon.

"Finally…thought you would just leave me here and forget." She spoke in a soft tone with a trace of sarcastic. Demon growled.

"NO!" Jay lunged forward and sprang onto Demon’s back. His jaws latched onto Demon’s neck. The wolf dog snarled. Quickly, Pirate dashed forward.

"Get back to the group Shasta!" Pirate shouted. Shasta ran and Avalanche would have hugged her if she could. Demon flung Jay to the ground. He smacked into the ground but he stood as quickly as he could. Jay snarled.

"You leave Crystal alone you bastard!" Jay spoke angrily.

"Oh so sorry whelp!" Demon lashed out and caught Jay on the shoulder. Pirate went around back and bit down hard on Demon’s back leg. Demon howled and wheeled around to face Pirate. "You!" He snarled. Demon raised his head. "Attack and kill the red husky!" He said to his group. But no one moved. Most of them knew Pirate and also they were stunned at the sudden attack by Jay. Some dogs whispered to each other and a few left again, heading back to their homes. Demon snarled out, "Fine I do not need you!"

Pirate was for sure no one would attack. Suddenly, he was rammed to the ground. The red husky looked up to see Matt, his least favorite person. Pirate jumped to his feet and the two started to fight as Demon and Jay were battling. May even though on Demon’s side, could no longer stand it. The brown and white husky launched herself at Demon. No way was she going to let her brother die with her around. Demon pinned her to the ground. He realized who it was. "Traitor!" He yelled in her face.

"You leave my sister alone!" Jay bashed against Demon and the siblings started to attack Demon. But Demon remained strong in his attacks while the strength of the other two were failing as they got thrown around. May even though her leg badly wounded she leaped at Demon. The enemy slammed her to the ground with his mighty paw. The impact of her head hitting the ground caused a knock out.

Matt was pinned. Pirate growled. The two were bruised and bleeding. "Go home Matt. You know this is foolish." Matt growled and he opened his mouth to say something.

"Enough!" Crystal stood between Shasta and Avalanche. The white dog limped forward a little. Pirate let Matt up and the embarrassed husky made his way to the back of the group. May was knocked out still. Demon had Jay pinned. Demon looked up and snickered. "Looks as if someone hadn’t suffered too much." He pushed a paw down Jay’s throat. Jay gasped for air. Demon’s eyes narrowed. "Now I’ll make your heart suffer."

"Jay!" Pirate leaped forward only to collide with two dogs from Demon’s force. "This just keeps getting better and better…" Pirate thought to himself as he bit down hard on one dog’s ear. Another dog was trying to grab a hold of Pirate’s neck. Demon meanwhile had been watching with a smile but his smile turned to a snarl when another dog came to Pirate’s rescue.

Kaltag tackled the dog and snarled loudly. "Enough I said!" Crystal demanded again. Everyone froze then.

Pirate gave his Dad a quick thank you expression. Kaltag smiled. Then Pirate realized that Jay was still struggling for his life. He whipped his head around to see Jay trying to push Demon’s paw off but the wolf dog kept it firm. "Let him go. He does not need to die." Crystal pleaded. Her eyes begging him. Demon smiled as he believed he had found Crystal’s soft spot.

"Never…" Demon spoke as Jay was choking. BANG! Demon dropped to the ground like dead weight. Dogs on all sides scattered, scared. What had just happened? Pirate tried to remain calm as most of the dogs started high tailing it back to Nome. Pirate looked around to look at the remaining dogs. Shasta, Avalanche, Kodi, Dusty, Balto, Jenna, Kaltag, Dakota, Kirby, and Nikki were standing looking at each other. Ralph had dropped to his belly and hid behind Kirby while Star had done the same only behind Nikki.

"Where did that shot come from?" Dakota asked. Everyone was puzzled about it but Pirate had picked up the scent. A few humans were running up the hill toward them coming the direction the dogs had not gone.

"Some humans are running up here now as we speak." Pirate responded without looking at either of them. Suddenly, they came into sight. Not any humans Pirate recognized. But then he spotted that among them was the musher. The mail team ran to the musher in delight.

"That’s him alright!" One of the men yelled, pointing at Demon. They surrounded him. One of the other men spotted May. He knelt down next to her. He laid his hand over where her heart would be. He gave a small smile and blew into her ear softly. The ear flicked and May’s eyes opened slowly. She gave a soft whimper and the man stroked the top of her head while his eyes checked her wounds.

Crystal limped closer to Demon’s body and sniffed around. Where had Jay gone? The man that yelled earlier tried to pull the wounded crossbreed away but she refused. Crystal started barking. "What is she barking at?" One of them asked. It was a young man that was holding the rifle. It seemed as if it was he who had killed Demon.

"I don’t know. All I know is you dropped this monster to the ground." There came whimpering from underneath Demon. The man with the rifle raised it just in case it was Demon who made the whimper. A white muzzle poked out from under the wolf dog’s body. Crystal froze. The man dropped his rifle and shoved the dead body off. Jay looked up and his tail started to wag. "Jay!" The man hugged Jay’s neck. It seemed as if the master had came to Jay’s rescue. Jay winced a little but he was happy.

Crystal barked happily. She rushed away from the man’s hand and stopped next to Jay. The human removed his arm and watched as Crystal and Jay looked at each other. Jay then without himself knowing started to lick Crystal’s wounded neck. Jay’s owner noticed the wounds on Crystal. "Looks as if I got two dogs on my hand to care for." The humans started to break out laughing.

Pirate looked around. The musher had taken his team back to check if they had wounds. Nikki, Star, Balto, Jenna, and Dakota went with them. Only Shasta, May, Avalanche, and Kaltag remained.

"Hey isn’t that the Baker’s dog?" They shined a light at him, Pirate was blinded for a minute.

"What other dog could be the Baker’s dog?" Jay’s owner said. The man with the flashlight came closer and examined him.

"He’s got some bleeding but other than that I think he’ll be fine." The man patted Pirate and Pirate gave a doggy grin.

Crystal laid next to Jay while the humans discussed about Demon. Shasta approached her. She slipped the bandana off. "I believe this is yours." Crystal smiled and with Shasta’s help was able to slide it back on.

"Thank you Shasta." Crystal spoke. Shasta smiled before she walked over to Pirate. Pirate smiled.

"You okay?" Pirate asked.

"Yeah just a bit shaken up." Shasta responded. Pirate nuzzled her friendly.

"Don’t worry. It’s all over." Pirate comforted her. Shasta kept her head under Pirate’s and sighed. True she was shaken, So much had happen and in a flash it was done. But she smiled. Now there was nothing to really fear on Halloween night for the children.

Ashley walked with a trick or treat bag in one hand and the other hand was laying on Pirate’s back. The young girl cried when they brought Pirate home all injured but she was joyful that he was not severely injured. Ashley looked down and she patted Pirate’s head. Pirate looked up and she giggled. Pirate had an old white cloth draped over him. Two holes were cut out for his eyes and his muzzle kind of stuck out. When he wagged his tail, the entire cloth moved.

"I can’t wait! It’s going to be so fun! I wonder if Emily’s bringing either of her dogs with her?" Ashley asked her mother. Mrs. Baker smiled.

"We’ll just wait and see." Pirate smiled. The three were walking over to Emily’s but not for pumpkin carving. The best friends were going to go trick or treating together and Pirate couldn’t wait. As they neared the house, the two jack o lanterns were lit. The candles in them flickered a bit giving the goofy looking one a playful light. Ashley dashed up the steps and Pirate followed a little slower. Pirate had been sore but tonight he was feeling up to a little Halloween fun. Mrs. Baker adjusted Ashley’s witch hat. The little witch looked up and smiled. Ashley had a black cloak on with her black hat. She had dark purple shoes and a moon charm around her neck. Ashley knocked on the door.

Emily opened the door. Emily smiled. "Ashley!" Emily opened the door and stepped out. Emily was a princess. A light blue dress with plastic "glass" slippers. White gloves and children silver play jewelry with a tiara to finish it off. Ashley smiled.

"Emily don’t forget your trick or treat bag!" Her mother called out. She came to the door but the bag was not with her. Instead Shasta pranced out onto the porch with the bag in her jaws. "Thank you Shasta." Emily took her bag and patted her dog’s head. "See Shasta’s dressed up to." And she was…

A small lavender cloak was over her back. The cloak was attached to a fake sapphire brooch, which Pirate was guessing play jewelry. Blue and purple ribbons were braided to make Shasta’s bracelets. "And look I even painted her nails!" Emily spoke and she held up one of Shasta’s paws. Sure enough her nails were a sky blue. Pirate wondered how Emily did it and what was going through Shasta’s mind then. He chuckled. "She looks wonderful." Mrs. Baker said.

"It took forever to braid the bracelets." Emily’s mother spoke. Ashley giggled.

"She’s just so pretty!" Ashley exclaimed. Emily giggled at Pirate. Shasta turned her head and she tried not to giggle. "See I told you I was going to have Pirate be a ghost hound." Ashley spoke.

In a few minutes the friends, the two dogs, and Mrs. Baker were on their way to gather candy. Shasta smiled at Pirate. "I thought you were joking about the ghost hound thing." She spoke as they walked to their second house.

Pirate chuckled. "Nope I wasn’t kidding. And I thought you weren’t coming."

Shasta grinned a little before rubbing her tail under Pirate’s chin. Pirate would have melt right then and there. "Well things change." She spoke and gave hint she would not give him any clues.

As the night drew on, the children had collected a heavy load of candy. Even Pirate and Shasta received dog treats as well as many pats on the head. It was almost midnight before they started to head to Emily’s. Emily would stay the night at Ashley’s and maybe, Pirate had prayers that Shasta could stay the night. "Hi mom!" Emily said as her mother opened the door. Her mother smiled and let the guests enter the cozy home. Emily went to go change and get her over night bag. Emily’s mother prepared pumpkin spice cocoa for her guests. Ashley gladly accepted it. "Thank you."

Pirate flopped down and Shasta sat. "Man what a night!" Shasta giggled. Pirate looked at her. "Oh don’t tell me you weren’t almost freaked by that zombie fellow." Shasta just gave an innocent smile.

"Come Shasta and lets get your costume off." Emily’s mother spoke. Shasta followed her owner and Pirate would have to wait. Then he realized something, where was Avalanche?

It seemed as if Ashley read his mind. "Where’s your other dog?"

"I think she went to hang out with her other dog friends." Emily’s mother called out.

Ashley thought about it for a minute. "Then can Shasta stay the night to? She might get lonely by herself." Pirate rose to his feet and started to bark happily. "See even Pirate wants her over!"

Emily’s mother chuckled. "Only if he keeps his paws to himself." She spoke and let Shasta free. Shasta trotted to Pirate and just smiled. Pirate blushed. "Hey mom can Shasta stay the night to?" Ashley asked her mother. Mrs. Baker just smiled. "I guess so."

Emily and Ashley darted upstairs. Pirate and Shasta were to stay downstairs that night. The fire embers still glowed as Shasta laid down on the floor. Pirate joined her and then he realized how tired he was. He sprawled out and soon fell into a deep sleep. Shasta watched him before she leaned against him.

Scratch. Scratch. Pirate startled awake, upsetting Shasta in the process. "Ow! What is it Pirate!" She hissed.

"Some one’s at the door." Pirate spoke. He approached the door and took a few sniffs. He smiled.

"Well who is it?" Shasta asked but Pirate had slipped through the doggie door. She growled before joining him outside.

There standing on the porch was Crystal and Jay. Shasta smiled. "What are you guys doing here?" Pirate asked.

"We wanted to come by and thank you for everything." Crystal spoke before her eyes darted from Pirate to Shasta. "Sorry if you guys were in the middle of something."

"You just woke us up from our sleep that’s all." Shasta quickly explained. Jay just nodded with a smirk. "Any way’s Crystal, we’re your friends. We’ll help you with anything you ask."

Crystal smiled. "I guess you were right Pirate. There’s always something to live for, such as friends." Pirate gave a sheepish smile. Crystal faced Jay and nuzzled him. "And to live for Jay to." Jay blushed and his tail started to thump against the wooden floor. Pirate and Shasta exchanged looks. "Thank you for everything again. We’ll see you tomorrow." Crystal even though she limped she still held herself like a queen with a very happy Jay next to her. Pirate and Shasta watched them leave.

"Don’t they make a cute couple?" Shasta asked and Pirate nodded as his mind thought of him and Shasta making a cute couple. Pirate retreated back indoors and Shasta joined him. Shasta curled back up into a ball and she drifted back to sleep. This time Pirate watched her and sighed as his mind led him to daydreams of Shasta. He took the risk of curling his body around her. She didn’t budge and he gave a sigh of relief. He wandered into deep sleep.

Jay and Crystal were standing on a hill that wasn’t too far from Nome and looked over the landscape. Crystal had nightmares about Demon but Jay was always there to comfort her. They shared this morning in peace. "It’s really beautiful." Crystal pointed out and Jay nodded. Jay’s owner had tried to find a new home for Crystal but no one would take her. So to Jay’s joy, Crystal got to stay.

"Your owner’s really nice." Crystal said.

"You mean our owner." Jay corrected her.

She blushed a little. Crystal was still getting used to living with her crush. She had not had an owner in years but she gladly accepted the attention and care from Jay’s owner. She smiled. Crystal sat down and Jay sat down with her.

Crystal was right. The sunrise was beautiful and the sky just as colorful. He thought this would be the moment to tell her he liked her. But he was nervous and he had to admit that if she said no it would be awkward in the household. "You wanted to go look around town?" He chickened out.

"Let me enjoy this morning for a little more." Crystal spoke and Jay nodded. Jay sighed. Well at least he got to live with her.
