That story shows what dogs would feel if they would think like humans. An important detail is that in this story Steele is the same breed as Jenna.
Finally Spring time came. Balto couldn't wait to see Jenna. He was very happy with Aleu but then when the spring time came he wanted his visiting Aleu bring to the end. He said good bye to her and quickly ran home.
While Balto was running home, Jenna's behavior was different. When Balto came to Jenna's home, she wasn't there. Balto was worried about her. He went into his boat to ask Boris if he knows where his mate is. He didn't have to ask him because Jenna was already there, sitting and waiting for him. Balto hugged and kissed her and said how much he missed her. Boris went out. Balto looked at Jenna and saw sadness on her face. "What's wrong?" he wondered. He asked her that question but she said:
"No, nothing...just little bit....tired."
But Balto knew that something is wrong. Jenna was with him long time so he knew when she's alright and when something worries her. He said:
"Are you sure Jenna? You know that you can tell me everything...I can see that something is wrong..."
"Yes.....you're right....and I came here to talk to you about it..." Jenna replied.
"Well...what is it?" Balto asked.
" I....uhm...I'm.......I'm pregnant Balto..." Jenna said and BAlto did allow her to finish and said:
"That's great news Jenna! I'm so happy that we will have puppies..."
"But these are not your puppies Balto....." Jenna interfered. Balto stopped his smile and looked surprised at Jenna. Jenna said:
" I know it is a shock for you and I understand if you will not want me anymore but I have to tell you the whole truth Balto...and it is hard for me as well, so please listen to me until I finish....."
Balto sighed and said:
"....ok....go on...."
"Well....it happen when you were with Aleu. Rosie's mum got very serious sickness. She had to go to hospital, but they didn't have any spare money for the operation. Someone told them that they could sell my pups because I am a pedigree dog, and that they just have to find a good male for me. I got really scared when I heard it. I couldn't imagine any other dog near me but only you. They had a problem with finding cheap price for dog for me. They called Steele's man and made an agreement. Then Steele told me how the agreement works: his man allow Steele to get near me, and that man takes one pup for free......" Jenna stopped there and started crying. Balto was groggy. He was trying to make decision. Jenna, his only love, was unfaithful to him, but he still loved her. She said:
"I allowed that to happen only because of Rosie, I hate Steele, I love YOU Balto!" Jenna cried. Balto finally said:
"Jenna, honey, don't cry, everything will be alright....I love you too"
"Oh Balto, thank you!!" Jenna said.
"As you are part of me, and I am part of you, the puppies are part of me as well, so I will adopt them, Jenna"
" Oh Balto...." Jenna replied and hugged Balto.
After some time Jenna looked like a balloon, and was hardly moving. Balto was looking after her very well, she even sometimes thought that he's exaggerating a little bit, but Balto didn't really care what she thinks about it, because he wanted her and the pups to be safe. When the moment of birth came, Jenna and Balto were sleeping. Balto was right next to her being aware that the moment can come any time. Jenna started feeling that they want to come out. She said to Balto:
" Balto!!! Auch....they're coming!!"
"Who? Puppies?.....ugh, tell them to wait until my dream is finished...." Balto barked sleeping.
" Oh!" Jenna groaned and Balto recognized what she said to him and said:
" Jenna! Don't worry! I'm calling people!! Stay here, don't move!!" Balto started panic.
"Don't worry Balto...ugh...I'm gonna stay right where I am...even if I would like, I can't move...." Jenna replied.
After short time five little heads were stick to Jenna's belly making little noises. Balto and Jenna were glad and proud parents. As each time when they had pups, they were happy, until...The door opened, Balto and Jenna heard some voices laughing and talking. Then steps were heard louder and louder....Suddenly the door opened. They saw a man and a black and white husky, Steele. Balto and Jenna's faces were changed instant. Steele made stupid smirk and came closer to Jenna. He sat behind her and looked through her back to see the pups.
"My little puppies...Jenna, I'm so proud that we have them...You made right decision....They're beautiful" he said. Jenna didn't answer. She looked at Balto who was getting angry at Steele. She finally said:
"Well Steele, you can go now, you saw the pups, you happy, so go."
" No Jenna, not yet. They need to get to know me better, I'm their father, you can't tell me to go, I need to be near them and their mother, we are family now" Steele replied. Balto couldn't stand that anymore. He said:
" Jenna asked you to leave so don't make her upset in any way. She doesn't want you here anymore."
" You better remain silence, Balto! These are MY pups, not yours! Jenna, I have to stay anyway because my man wants to see our pups, and choose the one which gonna go with us later" Steele said. Jenna was also getting angry because she hated that he always remind her that these pups are his, not Balto's. Steele put his head on Jenna's back, pretending that is looking at pups, but in the same time he snuggle up to her. Jenna got angry and said hardly:
" Can you get away from me?! You can watch the pups from a distance!"
One pup which was eating, was stooped from doing that by Steele's face moved closer to him. Steele licked him. Jenna wanted humans to come quicker to get rid of him. She said to Steele:
" Would you stop it?! Leave the pups alone, and don't touch them! They need to get some energy, and you are stopping them!!"
"Ok, ok, don't be so excited! I agree, they need to get energy, my sons need to be as strong as me" Steele replied.
" These are only girls, Steele, there is no boy" Jenna said.
"What?! Oh, sorry I didn't know" Steele said.
Finally the man came. He couldn't decide yet what pup does he want so he decided to wait until they will be older to see how do they look. Jenna and Balto at least could have some rest from disturbing Steele.
Two months went so quickly that Balto and Jenna didn't notice that the pups will soon get new homes. Flora and Jenna were sold to a lady who lived in Mexico. Sara was sent to London. The 4th pup, Samantha, was bought by a French couple. The 5th pup, Diane, she was the chosen pup by Steele's man. Diane was a beautiful husky, she remind Steele Jenna. That's why Anna was jealous. When Diane came to Steele's home, each Anna's visit was disrupted by her. Everything went wrong because of her. Susie also got jealous because she, as a pup, never got as much attention from her dad as she does. However, Balto couldn't stop thinking about her. He treated her as his daughter, he missed her. Meeting herwas impossible because of Steele who kept her away from him. What he couldn't stand was that Steele was using Diane as a reason to meet Jenna. Balto never left Jenna alone with them. He knew that when he would be gone, Steele wouldn't take care of his daughter but take a chance to get closer to Jenna. Jenna however, she couldn't stand Steele's presence while the time of Diane's visit.
The next spring time came. This time Balto was right next to Jenna, he didn't left her even for a second. Though he knew that last unfaithfulness of Jenna was because of Rosie's mum's operation, he didn't want cause another similar situation. That made Steele mad, because that took from him occasion to get closer to Jenna again. He thought that if Jenna agreed last time, there would be no problem this time as well, but...now his another problem again was Balto. Because of that Steele wanted Jenna, Anna was also getting mad. She noticed that Jenna is becoming her enemy. She was glad that Balto was 'stuck' to Jenna, because that gave her a chance to get close to Steele. Steele had also problem with his young daughter, Diane who also felt in love. He had to keep an eye on her because her beloved one was not a dog, but a wolf. That made Steele even more mad. That spring time was very stressful to everyone.
One day Steele met Jenna walking on the beach alone. He thought 'yes, she's finally alone, that's my chance'. He went in her direction to talk to her.
" Jenna!" He called. Jenna turned around.
" Hi, how are you? What are you doing here alone?" Steele asked.
"What? Me? I'm walking" Jenna replied shortly giggling.
"Alone? Are you looking for someone? May be...me?" He said and started nuzzling.
" Stop it!" Jenna shouted at him. Steele was surprised and quickly took his head off her. " I'm having a walk, so please excuse me, I need loneliness for that moment, and then I'm gonna go to someone else who can accompany me."
"I can accompany you all the time...." Steele replied.
"No, thank you, I need someone calm to accompany me because while I'm expecting puppies I can't be stressed" Jenna said and went away.
Steele was surprised, and then realized why she was walking alone. He reminded himself that he has a meeting with Anna. He ran quickly to her. She was waiting for him quite a while so she was angry at him. When he arrived she said to him:
"Where have you been?! I was waiting here so long, sitting here alone! Even some dog were wiggling around me, and that's not nice! I don't want to stay here any longer!!!"
Anna went away, then Steele ran behind her. He stood opposite her to stop her and said:
"Anna! I'm sorry, I didn't want to hurt you...I love you"
Anna couldn't go away because she loved him so much. She hugged him. They spend whole evening together.
Steele came back home very early morning, leaving Anna at her home. He didn't think about anything else but sleep. His thoughts were telling him: 'sleep...sleep...sleep' STOP! Suddenly his thoughts about sleeping went away when he saw empty bed of Diane. 'Where is she?!Where is she?!' his thoughts were telling him.
"Oh NO!!!Not the wolf!!!" Steele called out. He ran outside to check if she's somewhere there. No track of her! He ran to the forest to look for her, no track! He came home exhausted in the evening. He went to bed and sack out.
"d.......d........"
Steele heard some voice calling him. He opened his eyes, and there Diane was standing before him.
"Dad, I brought you some water...here....are you ok?" Diane said.
"D...Diane....baby...where have you been....I was worrying about you..." Steele barked.
" I was with my mum and uncle Balto. Why?" Diane replied.
"..oh...good....good daughter.......thank you for water..." Steele said.
" Right, I'm gonna leave you now, you need some rest...bye dad"
Diane said.
"b..." Steele didn't finish and fall asleep again.
Diane went away chuckling. She knew why her dad was worried about her. He didn't allow her to go to the wolf which she loved, but he didn't know her secret.....
" Sitka! Sitka! Where are you?" Diane called her mate.
" Diane..." Sitka said while he saw her.
"Oh Sitka, how good to see you again" Diane said nuzzling him.
The couple went together for a dinner which was prepared by Sitka. They sat opposite each other and started eating. Sitka also took care about the background. He took some most beautiful flowers, and put around the meal. The atmosphere was stunning. Sitka took some flowers and put around Diane's neck.
"You look so beautiful" Sitka added. Diane left the food and went around 'the table' and sat next to Sitka. They spend a wonderful time together.
After some time Jenna gave birth to four little puppies. Balto and Jenna were very happy again. They had one girl which they called Anyu because her outlook had a lot in common with Balto's mother, Aniu. The other 3 were boys: Boston was the one who looked like Balto with yellow belly, Barrow was red one and Denver was another one who inherited Balto's outlook.
While Balto and Jenna's pups were growing day by day, little bit later, Anna also gave birth to four puppies. They had 2 girls. One of them looked more like Steele and she was called Misha, and another one, with beautiful shiny tan colored fur was called Alice. Rex was a black and white boy with creamy patches on his eyes. Their last son was called Roy, who inherited Anna's outlook and Steele's character.
Both couples supposedly were very happy. However, Steele still was thinking about Jenna. He loved Anna very much but Jenna couldn't get of his mind. He loved both of them. He still hated Balto, and he didn't want him to be Jenna's mate. That's why Diane was his beloved daughter, who was part of him and Jenna.
That day, Steele spend whole day with Anna and a week old pups. He went home. He saw his daughter Diane laying down in her bed. He didn't bother to say hello to her, because the tiredness was coming out of him.
"Hi dad..I want to show you something" Diane started.
"Diane, please, not now, I'm tired...." Steele replied and sack out. He tried to get some sleep but he heard squeaky voices coming from Diane. He asked:
"What's that noise, Diane?"
"That's what I wanted to show you. Come here..." Diane said quietly.
Steele got up and came to Diane's bed. There, next to Diane's belly, were laying down seven little globules pushing each other to get to their mommy's belly. Steele couldn't believe his own eyes. He was stuck and couldn't say a word. He was shocked. He was getting mad and angry inside but outside he couldn't say even a word. He turned away and looked at the door, he looked again on the pups, he looked again on the door, and bad thoughts came to his mind. He wanted to through outside little puppies and lock Diane inside. 'No it wouldn't work' he thought. He was very angry.
"Dad, what's wrong?" Diane asked. She saw his strange behavior and for the first time, she was afraid of him. She put her head on the pups to protect them. While Steele was going to make a move, Anna arrived.
" Steele, is there something wrong?" she asked. She then realized that he's going to make something very bad, she could see it on his face. Anna saw the pups, and Diane very scared. She stood up before Diane to protect her.
"MOVE!!!!!" Steele shouted at Anna. Anna was shocked. She never knew that he can be so angry. He caught her and through into the other side of the room and when he was going to make a move to trash Diane's bed and throw pups on the floor, Anna jumped on him, and made him fell down. It wasn't easy for her because Steele was a big strong male husky and he could easily hurt her. But because when Steele was try8ing to get rid of Anna on his back, she accidentally sticked him with a heavy vase which in addition was full of water. Steele lost his control and felt down unconscious. Anna and Diane started barking to call people. The people took care of him. Anna and Diane were shocked. They couldn't even move, they couldn't say anything. That what happen just a while ago was still couldn't get off their minds.
After sometime Steele and Anna took their pup for a trip. Diane also came with her little ones. They found safe glade to play, but they did realize that near that a precipitous river was placed near by. They all had a great fun.
" Steele, I need to go home for a second, I forgot to bring some food for our pups, will you take care of them while I'm not here?" Anna asked.
" Yes, sure, me and Diane will keep an eye on them" Steele answered.
Anna went home. While Steele and Diane were watching the pups, one of them was missing.
" Dad, where is the 4th pup?" Diane asked worried.
" What? Wait, Alice! Alice, where are you?" Steele called.
While they were looking for Alice, she was trying to get her ball out of the river.
"Alice!" Diane called out.
"Diane, look my ball felt over! I can't get it out! Aaaa!" Alice called out and dropped to the river.
" Alice, No!" Diane called out and ran behind her.
Steele didn't know what is going on and then he saw his daughter fusing in the river. He jumped behind her. He and Diane were searching for her on the bottom of the river. Diane saw her lying down on the stones under the water. She swam in her direction, but it was too late. The water took Alice somewhere where they could find her anymore.. Diane swam behind her but she couldn't find her anymore. Steele was looking everywhere for his little baby with confused eyes. Diane came out of the water and ran by the riverside. There was no track of her little sister. She was gone. The pup was gone forever. Diane sat by the riverside and cried saying:
"NOOO!!!"
Steele heard her, and came out from the river. He saw Diane crying.
"No! No no, don't say that she...NO!!!" Steele cried out.
Steele started crying as well. Other three pups went near their daddy and hugged him. Diane's pups were confused. They tried to cheer up their mommy. Anna returned with the food for puppies. She saw Steele and Diane crying. She was worried.
" Steele, what's wrong? W, why are you all crying?" Anna asked worried.
" Mommy, Alice is dead, she felt down to the river" said one of the pups and hugged Anna crying.
" No.......NO!!!" Anna screamed and also started crying.
Steele came near her and hugged her.
"H..ow?! How did it happen?" Anna asked crying.
"I don't know, Anna, I was looking for her around and then I heard screaming and Diane called her name so I went to see and I saw Alice in the river. I jumped it and....oh Anna I couldn't see her anywhere! I saw that Diane found her but she missed and didn't catch her....the river took her away..." Steele cried.
"Oh no!!" Anna said. She didn't like Diane from the beginning and now she even couldn't help her little sister. She looked at her and said:
"You! How could you do that?! How could you let Alice thaw out!! How could you!!!" Anna screamed.
" I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I was trying my best!" Diane cried.
" My daughter is dead because of you!!!" Anna called out.
" NO!!That's not true!" Diane cried.
" No one wants you, Diane, you are not needed, even your mum didn't want you to be born!!!" Anna shouted.
" That's not true, you're lying!!" Diane cried.
" Oh, am I? Your mum never loved your dad, she loves that wolf, Balto! She gave birth to you only because on money! Because you were only born to sell you later!!!" Anna called out.
Diane was very surprised. Anna told her all the truth which was all her life hidden from her. Steele looked at Diane if she's gonna believe Anna or not. He loved Diane very much, and she was very valuable to him.
" Diane, don't believe her, she's just upset about Alice, me and you mum were in love" Steele lied.
"No, no! Leave me alone!" Diane cried and run away.
Anna couldn't hide that she was glad. She was glad that finally one obstruction went away. But there was a problem with Steele. He loved Diane so much that he ran behind her. Anna didn't like it. She was jealous. She loved Steele and she could do anything for him. Steele, however, his heart was divided for three girls. He loved Jenna as much as Anna, and because he couldn't have Jenna, he had his daughter, Diane, who remind him Jenna.
Diane went to some place where she could be alone. She started crying. She never thought that this can be the reason for someone to have pups. She was so angry at her father and mother. She didn't know what to do. She still loved them. 'I love them but do they love me?' She thought. From now she realized that every minute of her life was an obstruction to everyone. Her mum didn't want her because she loved another dog, Anna hated her because she wasn't her daughter, Susie hated her because as daughter of Steele was better treated. She was feeling like an outcast, like a piece of rubbish. She heard some noise of steps coming from the back. She turned her sad eyes and saw a white wolf. It was Sitka. Only he and her puppies mattered from now. She turned her head away again. Sitka sat next to her, and hugged her. She put her head on his fluffy arm and cried. She sack all the anger from her, all failing, all sadness.
