Sammik looked up at the spruce trees that surrounding him. Waiting for his sister to stumble up behind him. They panted heavily from having to almost swim through the thick snow. Maiyun licked her brothers face and looked around as well.
" C'mon, we gotta keep moving" she told him running past.
" It's not like we can't rest a few minutes" he complained. Maiyun ignored him and kept going stopping only to test the air. Sammik caught up and sat down panting even more. This time Maiyun sat also and rested.
" Do you think they went through here?" her brother asks looking around
" I don't know, I can't even smell em"
" The snow probably covered their tracks"
Maiyun couldn't help getting annoyed by her brother and she allowed a low growl rumble in her throat.
" Duh, of coarse the snow covered their tracks"
" Well, you don't have to get mad" he looked angrily at her.
Maiyun heard something and froze.
" I mean C'mon, You were the one who got us lost in the first place"
" I told you not to go in the woods and go chasing after that stupid rabbit that you know we couldn't catch in the first place but of coarse you didn't listen and another-"
" Sammik, Shutup!" she growled at her brother, and looked towards the place where the sound was coming from. A deer burst out and bounded away right in front of them. Maiyun shook her head and kept walking.
" Wow, that was amazing, Did you see how she just burst out like that?" he asked excited looking towards the place where the doe bounded off. A small blizzard was beginning to start up, and Maiyun knew they had to find shelter before it got worst. She kept walking and found a small den that had once been dug out by foxes. She went in cautiously and smelt around then assuring herself it was comfortable she layed down. Sammik crawled in beside her and nestled up to her. She bared her fangs annoyed but tried not show it.
" Maiyun, Do you think we'll die out here? he asked suddenly serious.
" We're not going to die"
" But remember how Kita ran off and we never saw her, then the pack found her dead from starvation?"
" Yeah, I remember"
" That won't happen to us right?"
Maiyun paused before answering and then looked at Sammik.
"No"
He pushed himself closer to her but this time Maiyun couldn't handle it.
" Sammik, Can you please give me some room?" she snapped.
" Oh, sorry" he hung his head and backed scooted away from her.
Maiyun turned on her side with her back against him almost feeling guilty. She had always been independent and really had wanted to chase the rabbit alone in the first place, but now for once she was glad Sammik was with her.
The next morning she awoke before her brother and yawned then stretched loosening her stiff muscles. She looked at Sammik who was still dozing and she couldn't help but smile. The blizzard had stopped and only a few flakes still fluttered to the ground. Maiyun licked Sammiks face to wake him and he smiled up at her and shook then ran out the den.
A stream was not far away but it was frozen solid and a layer of ice had seeled it shut. Sammik raced to it and walked on the ice.
"Sammik, You don't know how strong that ice is" she looked at him.
" Get off"
He looked at her.
" It's strong enough, Watch" he began bounding on it.
" Sammik, cut it out" she barked sharply.
He ignored her and kept doing it only Maiyun heard a sharp pop and another then another.
" Maiyun" he trembled looking at the ice that was cracking around him.
" Sammik, stay still" she started towards him but suddenly the ice faltered and he went under. She gasped and ran over and tried to reach him, he was to far out and she would have to swim over to him.
She plunged in. The coldness hit her like a hammer and she couldn't breath, ignoring it, she swam to her brother and grabbed the scruff of his neck and hawled him over to her. They got back on the bank and she shook the water off of her trembling horribly.
" Sammik" she shook him. He lay their not moving. Maiyun stood there breathing heavily then she pounced on his side. He suddenly came to life and he spit out loads of water. He layed there shivering and Maiyun layed her body against his warming him.
"Maiyun, I'm so sorry" he trembled.
" Shhhhhh...... Don't worry about that right now"
" I know but you told me not too, and I did it anyway"
" Just like you told me not to go after the rabbit" she smiled down at him
He smiled up at her but soon fell asleep. Maiyun got up against him and slept as well. When they finally awoke which was late afternoon, Sammik felt better but he was still stiff and so was she. They made their way slowly through the snow and had to rest often.
Maiyun noticed the accident had changed her brother. He didn't talk so much and he was more serious almost wise. She admired him for that.
" I think we should find food soon" he said, smelling around.
" Yeah, I'm famished" she replied.
Sammik led them to a small creek where the ice had melted. Winter was slowly being taken over by spring and the snow was turning into mush. Making it a lot easier for them. Sammik splashed in the water and waited patiently until a trout came right beneath his nose, he then snapped it up, and Maiyun watched as the fish slapped her brother's face. The oxygen took over the dying fish and it's tail soon went limp.
She soon went into the creek herself and snapped up her own fish. They caught many that afternoon and they were fully stuffed.
" Wow, Now that's good eatin" she said full.
" Yeah, but I want some real meat"
" Same here"
"I can't wait till Spring fully comes"
"We're gonna have elk, deer, and all kinds of food"
" It's gonna be a buffet" he exclaimed excitingly.
" Yeah, that is true"
" I can't wait to sink my teeth in some elk" he said.
Maiyun rolled her eyes and put her head on her paws. Sammik suddenly stood up and growled.
" What?" she stood quickly and looked where her brother was looking. A huge think came lumbering through the forest and broke into the clearing where Maiyun and Sammik were standing. The huge Grizzly made it's way to them and roared standing on his hind legs. The two siblings stood there frozen with fear. How would two wolf pups fight a bear?
