A Lost Love
Summary: This is my version of Aniu & my version of Balto's father, Quincy, meeting. Quincy always thought that racing was much more important than love, friends, & family. That all changes though when he meets a beautiful white wolf named Aniu. Aniu takes him into her pack, but it seems her father doesn't trust him, but the other wolves seem very interested in the sled dog. Can Quincy earn Aniu's father's trust?
Rating: The rating is PG for violence, fighting, mild language, and maybe a little romance.
Setting: Takes place on a farm near Fairbanks, Alaska, 1920

Author's Note:
Yes, finally, my second fan-fic! I enjoy making stories like these, now!
Anyways, my second fan-fic is of course about Aniu & my version of Balto's father, Quincy, meeting and falling in love with each other, and where I think Balto was born.
Quincy's previous name was Tad, from a past fan-fic I wrote before, "Aniu & Tad", before I quit the site. I wanted to rewrite the story though, and give Tad a new name. I figured that it could be Quincy. I'm not sure what it means, but I know it's a French name, and I'm learning French at school, so I figured to put a character with a French name on here.
I also added Maxwell in here, from "The Wolf Within His Soul". Which means that the beginning of the story takes place before Maxwell becomes wild in a wolf pack.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this fan-fic better than the previous one! Enjoy!

Chapter One
"Aniu! Stop watching the sled dogs race with so much interest! I've told you a millions of times, and if I have to tell you a million more times, your not going to be a sled dog!"
A young white female snapped out of attention and turned around, seeing another white wolf behind her, and he didn't look too happy.
"Oh, daddy!" the female cried, known as Aniu. "I can't help it! Sled dogs are just... just so interesting! I don't get how you won't let me do anything I want!"
"Well, if you run from home and meet up with a husky, a male husky, I don't want my daughter coming back with hybrid puppies!" her father growled, stepping forward.
Aniu stared at him, disgraced. "What's wrong with dogs anyways, daddy!" Aniu growled. "All because they pull sleds and they work for humans, doesn't mean they still can't be wild or not hunt or not fight! Trust me, I've seen two sled dogs fighting before and they spilled blood like we wolves do with fights!
Her father growled more. "Aniu, no is no! I order you to stop watching them!"
Tears swelled up in Aniu's eyes. "I hate you, dad!" she cried. Aniu ran away, sulking.
Aniu's father was about to chase after her, but a voice stopped him.
"Yestin, just leave her. She'll come back soon."
Yestin turned around and saw another female white wolf standing behind him. He sighed. "I'm sorry, Christi. I'm just worried for our daughter. I want her to be happy."
"Well, the only tihng that'll make her happy is meeting one of those sled dogs, why can't you just accept that?" Christi asked, walking up to him. "And so what if she mates with a sled dog?"
Yestin sighed again. "Yeah, I guess. But if man saw her? We might lose her or she might put herself & I & you & the pack in danger. I don't want that to happen."
"Our daughter's too smart to be caught by man," Christi argued. "So stop being such a worry wart and leave her be!"
Yestin nodded slowly, and began to follow his mate back to the cave.
"Quincy!"
The young brown male husky snapped to attention and looked towards another husky. The husky sighed. "Are you day dreaming again, Quincy?" he asked.
The brown male, known as Quincy frowned. "Emilianno, so what if I am day dreaming?" he asked. "I only do it when I'm bored or if I'm sleeping! You just irrupt me from my thoughts for no reason, and then leave me alone! Can you stop that!" Quincy growled.
The other husky, Emilianno's ears pinned back. "Well, snappy," he snapped back. "If your just going to be a grumpy old head, I won't be talking to you anymore!" He snorted and walked away.
Quincy sighed sadly, and laid down, resting his head on his paws, whimpering sadly. He didn't really mean to hurt his friend.
"Don't feel bad, Quincy. Emilianno shouldn't be bossing you around for no favor either, if you don't like that."
Quincy's ears twitched and he looked around, seeing a male husky staring at him. He sighed again. "I know, Vaughn. It gets really irritating just hearing him babble his mouth all of the time when he doesn't even need anything."
Vaughn smugged a little. "Come on, Quincy, weren't we suppose to meet your sister, Vivianna again?" Vaughn, asked blushing lightly.
Quincy smirked and rolled his eyes at Vaughn. He knew that Vaughn had a thing for his sister, Vivianna, and Vaughn couldn't deny it. "Sure," Quincy responded, getting up & walking out of a barn he had been laying in.
He looked outside at the fresh, bright daylight, & began to go to the entrance of the farm, and left the property, and began to walk down the road with his trusty Vaughn at his side.
Quincy walked past another farm, where a border collie male stood at the entrance.
"Morning, Quincy, Vaughn," the border collie greeted with a wave of his tail.
Quincy & Vaughn also wagging their tails. "Good morning, Maxwell," Quincy said first, then Vaughn repeated.
"Where are you headed off to?" Maxwell asked, flickering his ears at them.
"Oh, we're going to go see my sister, Vivianna. Do you wanna come?" he asked.
"Sure!" Maxwell pipped up, wagging his tail harder, and he ran over to the two to join them.
All three of them began to leave towards the town of Fairbanks.
Quincy, Vaughn, & Maxwell finally arrived to Fairbanks, and Quincy took lead, showing the other two to Vivianna's house.
They arrived at a door on a porch, & Quincy scratched on the door.
It was a couple of seconds later, a female husky opened the door and peeked outside. She smiled warmly and stepped outside, closing the door behind her.
"Hello, brother," she said, giving him a sisterly loving nuzzle. She looked at Vaughn. "Hello Vaughn." The she gazed dreamly towards Max. "Hello Maxwell..."
Maxwell, blushed lightly and wagged his tail. "Hello, Vivianna," he grinned sheepishly.
Quincy looked over Vaughn, who had a look of jealousy planted on his face.
"So, what are you guys doing here?" Vivianna asked curiously.
"Oh, we just wanted to say hi," Quincy grinned. "Want to go for a walk with us?"
Vivianna nodded. "I wouldn't mind a walk."
Quincy nodded, still smiling, and all four of them left the porch and went on there walk.
"So, how has things been doing for you, Viv?" Quincy asked, smiling warmly over at his sister.
Vivianna smiled back. "Oh just the same old routine, nothing special."
"Did you meet anyone new that you like or something?" Vaughn pipped up, looking a little embarrassed.
Maxwell & Quincy froze in their footsteps, and looked at Vaughn like he was crazy.
Vivianna also looked at him, and rolled her eyes a little. "No, not yet. I'm looking though," she responded.
Quincy's ears twitched when he heard yelling and a yelp. He looked near a butcher shop where he was closely standing, and saw a white female figure running off with some meat, leaving the shop really quick with an angry owner.
The female was quite huger than a dog, so she couldn't possibly be one. But then if she wasn't, what would this stranger be?
Without thinking, he ran away from his friends, and raced right after the large dog.
Max, Vivianna, & Vaughn stared after Quincy, calling him to come back and not to go.
It was a very long run for Quincy, but he was use to that, since he was the lead dog of a sled team.
The chase went out of the town of Fairbanks, and into the woods in the outskirts.
This female was very fast, and she did very quick, sharp turns, and would be easy to loose, but then next time easy to find. The female also looked a little irritated by Quincy following her the whole time, so she turned around and growled viciously at the young husky, dropping her meat.
"Will you stop following me! I'm not doing anything wrong!" she snapped, threatening Quincy to back off our he would get hurt.
Quincy frowned at the female and stopped. "Well, you don't look like a dog to me, and I was just wondering what you were," he grumbled.
The female snorted at him like he was dumb. "I'm a wolf, you idiot, not a dog!"
Quincy gasped lightly in surprise. "A wolf!"
The female wolf rolled her eyes. "Yeah, no duh! Have you ever seen a wolf before? And can you stop following me too?"
"I'm sorry," Quincy muttered, twitching his ears. "I'm just curious on what your name is."
The wolf tilted her head to one side at Quincy, raising a brow. "Why do you want to know my name?" she asked.
"I don't know," Quincy said quietly. "I'll tell you mine first if you'd like. I'm Quincy."
The wolf smiled a tad bit, blushing a little. She began to think that Quincy was kind of cute.
"It's Aniu," she stated, still blushing a little.
Quincy smiled warmly, and wagged his tail. "Aniu? That's a beautiful name for a beautiful... wolf like you."
Aniu blushed harder.
There was suddenly an awkward silence between the two of them, then there was a loud call of Aniu's name.
Aniu was surprised, and stared at Quincy with fright in her eyes. "I-I gotta go!" she studdered, and ran away before Quincy could say anything else to her.
"W-w-wait!" Quincy yelled after her to stop. But she was already gone. Quincy sighed, and turned around, and started back for Fairbanks, where his 'abandoned' friends would be waiting.
"Aniu! Where were you! Don't you dare run away on me like that again! I was starting to get worried about you, that one of the other packs caught you and were keeping you hostage!" Yestin, Aniu's father, was nuzzling her in a fatherly worried way.
"I'm alright, dad," Aniu smiled, wagging her tail softly at him.
Yestin sighed and stared at her. "Let's get back to Shadow Pack, shall we?" he asked, and began to walk away.
Aniu followed. She was thinking about Quincy instead of the pack though. She wanted to see him again for some reason. Was it a friendship? A special bond? Or maybe even something more?
I just have to see him again tonight, I have to! I'll leave when everyone
is asleep...
Quincy finally made it to Nome, and the first to greet him was Vaughn, Vivianna, & Maxwell.
"Quincy, why did you run off like that!" Vaughn growled.
"We were going to look for you!" Vivianna added.
"Until we thought you were in the forest, so we were going to look there!" remarked Maxwell.
Quincy smiled a tad. "Well, I was hoping for a race. But to see that you were confused and worried about me and looking for me, I guess we weren't racing, huh?" he lied with no guilt.
"Well, you should of told us," Vaughn mumbled.
Maxwell looked up at the sky and realized that the sun was now setting. "It's getting late. My owner will be worrying. I think I should go."
"Yeah, us too," Vaughn & Quincy agreed.
Vivianna smiled warmly. "Well, I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow, unless your going on a sled trip."
"We probably won't," Quincy answered. "Or else I would have heard something about what."
Vivianna nodded. "Well, I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow then, unelss you here something." Vivianna blushed a little.
Vivianna seperated from the trio and they all left for home.
When Quincy & Vaughn had dropped Maxwell off back at his farm, both of the friends decided to go back to there farm. It was awkwardly quiet along the way, then Vaughn decided to break the silence.
"So why did you really run away?" Vaughn asked out of no where.
Quincy's ears pricked, and he stared over at Vaughn as they walked along the side of the country road to their home. "What do you mean, Vaughn?" Quincy asked, ears flickering.
Vaughn laughed softly, then turned serious again. "I know your lying, Quincy. You would've told us if we were racing or not. Why did you really run away?"
Quincy lowered his head. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you, so let's just forget about this."
Vaughn looked at him suspiciously, raising a brow, but nodded, slowly, and they finally made it to the farm.
They both walked into the barn and laid down.
"Good night, Quincy. Sweet dreams," Vaughn yelled and fell asleep as quick as a flick.
Quincy stared at him, and then sighed. "Yeah, good night, Vaughn. Sweet dreams... sweet, sweet dreams..."
Quincy woke up to the sound of light pawsteps outside the barn. He sniffed the air. The scent smelt familiar, he just couldn't remember who the scent belonged to, and he also knew he saw him, or her, today. Quincy quietly got up, not to wake anyone up, and padded outside the barn door. His ears flickered for anymore noise as he looked around for what was making the noise.
"Hm..." Quincy thought to himself out loud, as he sniffed around for whatever was making the noise. He peeked over the barn's corner, and met a pair of golden eyes to the liquid brown eyes of his own.
Quincy gasped and jumped back. "Aniu...?" Quincy asked, studying her. "What are you doing here!"
Aniu stepped forward. "Surprised?" she smugged. "I wanted to see you again for some reason
Quincy smiled a tad. "But why?" Quincy asked, wagging his tail a little.
Aniu blushed light pink. "Well, to tell you the truth, I kind of like you..."
Quincy also blushed, but harder and darker than Aniu was.
Aniu stepped a little closer. "So what do you do for a living?" Aniu asked, making conversation so they wouldn't feel so nervous from awkward silence.
Quincy smiled bigger. "I'm a sled dog. I pull sleds. I usually deliver mail to White Mountain, Nome, Nennana, Juneau..." Quincy trailed off. "So what do you do for a living?"
"Oh, I don't have a job," Aniu said quickly. "I live with a group of wolves called a pack. We're called Snow Pack, since most of us have white fur like snow."
Quincy sat down. "That's cool, what's it like being a wolf? All free and wild..." Quincy asked.
Aniu was about to reply, but gasped lightly when she felt large jaws snap over her throat.
Quincy gasped. "Aniu!"
Chapter Two
Aniu struggled to get whatever was biting away from her. She was losing air quickly, and she had to do something fast about it.
Quincy growled at the figure, which looked like a dog, and jumped at it, knocking it over. "Run, Aniu!" Quincy yelled.
Aniu obeyed and ran off quickly to the woods.
Quincy growled at the dog hovering underneath him. "Alright, who are you! What do you want! Why are you hurting my friend!" Quincy growled at the dog.
"Get off of me!" the dog growled, kicking him away from him, and getting up. "And what do you mean, 'friend'! That's a wolf, our enemy!" The dog revealed himself in the light.
Quincy growled, irritated at who it was. "Emilianno, can you please stop eavesdropping! You know how much that ticks me off," Quincy growled.
"Well, I don't seem to trust you," Emilianno replied with a snarl. "Your always getting yourself into things that sled dogs aren't suppose to be doing. I don't think your even fit for the job, because you don't even know what your doing all of the time!"
Quincy was insulted. "Shut up, and leave me alone! I hate you, just stay out of my life!" Quincy turned around, and went back to his barn, but was suddenly pushed to the ground by his side roughly. Quincy snorted and got to his feet, glaring at Emilianno, who was standing taller than Quincy.
"Oh, so you want a fight, Emil?" Quincy growled. "Alright then, I'll give you a fight!"
Quncy jumped at Emil, but Emil grabbed Quincy by the throat and pinned him quickly. Quincy snapped on Emilianno's ear, making him yelp and let go. Emiliano bit into Quincy's ear, but Quincy squeezed his neck even harder, making him cry out again. Emilianno grabbed Quincy's foot, trying to trip him, but Quincy got his rival to let go and bit his chest. Emilianno bit into the back of his neck hard, making him yelp for 10 seconds, and then let go.
Quincy collapsed in defeat. "You ever come here again, I'll kill you, now go!" Emilianno growled. Quincy nodded, whimpering, and got up, running away.
Quincy ran deep into the forest for twenty minutes, then stopped, and sat down, taking a rest. He whimpered sadly, his ears and tail drooping. His ears pricked and his nose twitched when he smelt and heard someone. He looked up and saw Aniu come out from behind a tree and look at him.
"Quincy!" Aniu barked happily, running over and nuzzling him, in a friendly manner. "Are you alright?" she asked, looking at him.
"Yeah, I'm alright..." Quincy sighed, whimpering sadly and lowering his ears.
Aniu stared at him in shock and surpise. "Are... are you sure...?" Aniu asked, hoping she didn't hurt him.
Quincy nodded. "I'm fine Aniu. It's just that I don't have a home anymore because my friend hates me."
Aniu also lowered her ears, feeling sorry for him. She sat down and thought in awkward silence. She broke into a grin, and looked up at Quincy. "Why don't you live with my pack and I then?" Aniu asked him, wagging her tail softly.
Quincy's ears perked up, and she stared at Aniu in surprise. "But... but I'm a dog! None of the wolves won't except me!"
Aniu stepped forward. "Well I'm the leader's daughter, the heir of the pack. He'll listen to me if I want something or not."
Quincy raised a brow at Aniu and smirked. "Wait, you want me to join your pack?" he chuckled.
Aniu frowned and pinned her ears pack. "Well-" Aniu paused, and was looking for the right words to say. "Well, you are a friend, and I wouldn't want a friend being lost and hurt, I would rather want him or her to have a place and be happy." Aniu paused again and stared suspiciously at Quincy. "You are a friend, aren't you?"
Quincy stared in Aniu at surprise for how much she had said, and also at the question she asked him. "Of course I'm a friend. Why would I hate you?" Quincy responded. He sighed and stood up. "Alright, take me to your pack. I'm not sure if this'll work though," he mumbled.
Aniu smiled a tad. "Follow me," she said, and turned around. Flicking her tail, she started to run somewhere.
Quincy followed. Aniu was pretty fast for her size, but since Quincy was the lead dog of a sled team that delivered mail, he could easily catch up.
Quincy & Aniu finally got back to her pack. Every wolf stopped what they were doing and stared as Aniu led Quincy to the leader's den. Once they went into the cave, all of the wolves went back to their duties.
"Dad! Mom!" Aniu shouted, her echoes bouncing off the wolves. Glowing yellow eyes began to show in the darkness, frightening Quincy a little.
"Aniu?" the yellow eyes asked. The eyes stepped out of the darkness, revealing a wolf that looked like Aniu. "Aniu, I was so-" The wolf paused, and glared at Quincy. "Who is this disgusting monster?!" the wolf growled, fur bristling.
Quincy looked taken a back.
"It's alright, dad, he's just a friend," Aniu tried to calm her father down. "Aniu, may I please talk to you alone?" Yestin asked, glaring at Quincy, and leading Aniu deeper into the cave where Quincy couldn't eavesdrop on them.
"Aniu, how can you bring such a monster into our home!" Yestin scold his daughter, cuffing her hard on the ears.
"He's not a monster, dad, he's a friend," Aniu snapped back. "He's a very good dog, I met him yesterday."
"Well, why can't he just go home instead of following you around all the time!" Yestin snapped.
Aniu lowered her ears a little. "He doesn't have a home..." she muttered, still looking at him. "But he's my friend, and I can't just leave friends all alone out there. Can he please stay? Just give him one chance, and if you screws up, I'll send him away." She promised.
Yestin thought long and hard about this, then made up his mind. "Okay, only one chance though!" Yestin growled and padded away.
Aniu sighed and walked back over to Quincy, trying to act bright. "Well, my father told me you can stay, so welcome to your new home!" Aniu yipped cheerfully.
Quincy barked happily. "Yahoo!"
It has been two months so far since Quincy became an unofficial pack member of Aniu's pack, the Spotted Pack, and Quincy was already getting everyone's respect. Even Christi seemed to enjoy him, but still not Yestin.
One day, Quincy was looking for some food for Yestin, Christi, & Aniu, until he got distracted by a familiar smell, that he hadn't smelt for two months.
Quincy followed the scent, which led to a small river. Quincy ran along side of the river, wondering if it led to whatever smelled. Quincy gasped and stopped as he saw a familiar female husky that looked like him.
"Viviana?"
The female husky looked up, a little startled, and blinked at Quincy, confused. "W-W-What...?" she studdered. The husky stood up and studied the male. "Quincy...?"
Quincy nodded excitedly, panting happily. "Viviana! It really is you! What are you doing here!"
Viviana shrugged. "I don't know, Vaughn showed me this river, and I like it here, so I come here alone sometimes." Viviana began to blush all of a sudden. "Do you notice anything... different?"
"What?" Quincy asked. "Is there something in my teeth?" Quincy smiled sheepishly, showing his fangs.
Viviana giggled. "No, silly! Something about me!" Viviana laughed.
Quincy blinked, a little confused, and studied her. He checked her face, which seemed the same, then he looked at her stomach. His eyes went huge. "Wow, no offence sis, but you've packed a few pounds for the past two months..." Quincy muttered quietly, half to himself.
Viviana couldn't help but laugh harder. "That's because I'm pregnant, Quincy!" She kept laughing.
Quincy's eyes went huge. "Pregnant? Who's puppies!"
Viviana tried to calm herself. "They're Vaughn's," she responded, blushing a little.
Quincy raised a brow at her. "But I thought you always liked Maxwell."
"Well, I did, until he disappeared..." Viviana grumbled.
Quincy looked even more confused. "What do you mean, disappeared?" Quincy asked, a little worried.
"Right after you left, a week later, he disappeared and he never came back for a month and four weeks. The next door neighbor dog said Max ran off with a female silver wolf from a pack called Blue Pack, but I don't really believe that," she sighed. "I was a little upset, because I knew that Maxwell had finally found a mate, and I was too late to confess my love to him. Vaughn was there to cheer me, and he did it well. So I began to fall in love with, and I found out that he had the same feelings for me always, even when I loved Max, so that's how I got pregnant. I got more month to go, then the puppies are born."
Quincy couldn't help but grin, knowing that he was going to be an uncle and all. "Well, congratulate Vaughn for me next time you see him, okay?" Quincy asked.
Viviana blinked at him in surprise. "You mean, your not coming back with us?" she asked, her voice a little shakey.
Quincy's smile disappeared and he lowered his head in sadness. He was always close to his sister when they were puppies, but he also loved Aniu for than anything in the world. He had no choice. "Well, I met a friend of mine, and I have these... odd feelings for her, though I'm not sure if she feels the same. Emilianno chased me away and told me to never come back to the farm, and she was the first dog... I mean wolf... to join her family, and I accepted that. So now I have to stay with her, to find out if she feels the same, and to make her happy."
Viviana's ears twitched. She lowered her head also. "I understand, Quincy," she sighed. "I hope you have a good life, and don't worry, I'll congratulate Vaughn for you. Goodbye, Quincy. I'll always love you like a brother." After those last words from his sibling, she turned around and walked away slowly.
Quincy watched as his sister leave, feeling guilty for what he had decided. He guessed he was stuck with it now and always, never aloud to go back to change his mind. He sighed and turned around, walking slowly, and never looking back at his home, his old home, his birthplace, where he was always welcome with open arms from his masters...
Quincy made it back to camp, where Aniu was waiting for him. "Where were you, Quincy?" Aniu asked, jumping up to her feet and rushing over to him. "I was worried!"
Quincy looked at her, ears twitching. "I went to go hunting for food, but I got distracted by something, that was troubling me from hunting, so I came back," Quincy lied. He didn't want the pack to know what he had expierenced with his sister, especially Yestin, since he was the alpha male and all, which made him very strict and sensitive about everything, of course...
Aniu smiled warmly, not sensing how Quincy was feeling inside right now. "That's strange! One of my friends said he was going to teach you how to hunt today! Will you still accept the turoral though?" Aniu asked, her tail swaying excitedly.
Quincy couldn't help but smile, staring at her cute grin, and nodded quickly. "Sure, I guess," he shrugged. "So where is this friend of yours?" Quincy looked up before Aniu could reply and saw a wolf walk up beside Aniu.
"Quincy, this is my friend, Kweku," Aniu introduced. "Kweku, you know Quincy, don't you?" Aniu asked, looking up at him. Kweku just nodded. "Okay then, go have fun!" Aniu yipped happily.
Kweku & Quincy nodded, and they both ran off side by side to go for Quincy's hunting lesson. Quincy began to think that the day wasn't going to be too bad. At least hunting would get his mind off of the conversation he and Viviana had not too long ago. Maybe he could even develope a friendship with Kweku and he could have another friend.
Quincy's ears twitched to the singing birds in the trees. He looked at his surroundings in the den, seeing that all of the others were still asleep. He grumbled. Why was he the one that always woke up first and wolves were always so lazy and had to sleep in late?
Quincy got up and went outside, looking around for something to do until the others were awake. He decided to patrol the area to see if he could scout out anything like an enemy wolf, or food.
Quincy looked around for a very long time, looking and looking for about a good twenty minutes, thinking that it was fine, he was about to go back to camp, he smelt something terribley wrong. He followed the scent, which led to an unknown wolf, sniffing around the place, knowing that it must have been an enemy, Quincy quickly hid behind a tree, and began to peak at the wolf.
It was a male, and it didn't seem like a rogue, since there was no trace of battle scars or wounds on him, and he looked pretty large and healthy to live his whole life as a loner. There was suddenly more scents, like his, and Quincy definetly knew what was happening. An enemy wolf pack was going to attack for their turf. Quincy turned and quickly began to run back to the pain part of their territory, and was relieved to see that all of his comrades were just waking up.
"Alert! Alert! Enemy wolf pack is coming straight our way to attack!" Quincy stated loudly, for everyone to hear. He caught everyone's attention, and there was a lot of pressure. They all gasped and began to chatter among theirselves, until they heard Yestin's voice shout over theres, which caught the whole pack's attention.
"We won't just stand here like a bunch of idiots!" Yestin growled. "Let's get out of there and fight them!"
Everyone began to cheer all of a sudden, and they all turned towards and started to charge through the forst, Quincy right behind them.
They finally found the other pack, and they were all charging at them, making Quincy a little scared. This was his first battle, so he didn't want to screw up.
The wolves finally met in battle. There was balls of fur scratching and clawing and snarling at each other. It lasted a good ten minutes.
Quincy finally got one wolf down quickly. It was a female, and he had her pinned, looking frightened.
"Please!" the female pleaded. "Please don't kill me! I've got a mate and three pups!" This was of course true, and Quincy knew it. Quincy didn't want to believe her at first, but seeing she was being honest by looking into her eyes, he let her go. Quincy looked up and saw a wolf from his pack glaring at him, then run off to another wolf that had one of his pack mates pinned down. Quincy's ears twitched, and he began to look worried. Was the wolf going to tell Yestin the mistake he did?
"Retreat, Fire Pack! Retreat!" a large male wolf howled. The enemy pack turned around and ran away, yelping with their tail between their legs. All of the wolves howled with victory, but Yestin silenced them quickly.
Yestin bgean to walk right up to Quincy, and he didn't seem happy. He looked down at him, hatefully. "I heard you let an enemy get away, is that true?" he growled in a harsh, scary tone.
Quincy gulped and nodded slowly. "Yes... I did..."
Yestin was so angry now, it looked like steam was coming from his ears. "YOU GOD DAMN FOOL!" Yestin scowled, smacking Quincy across the face and making him howl in pain. "You aren't suppose to let an enemy go, even if it's a female and she has a mate and three kids!" Yestin yelled. "I'm giving you one last chance. ONE LAST CHANCE! And if you screw up, you'll never come back EVER AGAIN! UNDERSTAND!"
Quincy yelped in surprise at the yelling, and whimpered, nodding quickly. He got up and began to follow the pack back home, his ears lowered and his tail tucked between his legs. He was expecting Yestin to suddenly turn around and strike him again, but it never happened.
When he came back, Aniu & Christi were waiting for him. Both ran up to him and nuzzled him. Christi thought of Quincy as a son of her own, which was why she was also nuzzling him. She backed away and gasped when she saw the scratch marks on Quincy's cheek. "Quincy! What the hell happened to your cheek?" Christi asked, shock in her tone.
Quincy shook violently. "Yestin hit me across the face, for letting a female with a mate and three kids get away..." Quincy quivered, breaking into tears.
Christi gasped. "Don't worry, it's alright, Quincy. Everything is going to be alright?" she said, nuzzling him in comfort, which worked. Christi then turned around and followed after Yestin into their den.
Yestin rested on the ground, and looked up at Christi who was storming over to him. "Christi, is there a problem?" Yestin asked sweetly.
"How dare you hit Quincy! He was just trying to be friendly, and you scowl him for that?" Christi snapped at Yestin, making him looked surprised.
Yestin looked surprised at his mate's outburst at first, but he suddenly frowned. "That was an enemy though, you never let your enemy get away with doing such an arrogent decision!" Yestin growled.
"Yeah, well I guess you'd probably do the same if you were that kind hearted, which I guess you aren't," Christi snapped, looking away from him.
Yestin snarled a warning out loud. "Listen here, Missy! If you don't behave, I'll -"
"You know what, Yestin, you sound just like your father!"
Yestin blinked in shock as he stared at tears running down Christi's face. He wanted to cry himself too, but he didn't want to show weakness.
Christi turned around and rushed out of the cave, running to Aniu's den. She collapsed at the entrance and began to sulk.
Aniu, who was sleeping woke up quickly, and saw her mother lying on the floor. She got up and rushed over to her, worried. "Mother, what's wrong?" she asked, feeling as if she was going to cry herself.
"Your father threatened me!" she wailed, crying harder.
"It's alright, mother, everything is going to be alright..." Aniu comforted her, nuzzling her in a loving daughterly way. "It going to be alright..."
Quincy woke up in the middle of the night all of a sudden. Everyone that he shared his cave with was asleep. Quincy sighed with relief. He got up slowly and padded outside. He looked up at the night sky, and saw it was a full moon. He also saw it was the perfect night to talk to Aniu. He began to walk towards Aniu's cave, and looked inside quickly. He was confused to see Christi sleeping with her daughter. He wondered why she wasn't in her own cave, where Yestin was.
"Aniu?" Quincy asked, walking a little deeper into the cave. "Aniu, are you awake?"
Aniu's ears twitched and she opened her eyes and looked at him. "What is, Quincy?" Aniu asked, blinking at him.
"I want to show you something," Quincy smiled warmly, wagging his tail a little.
Aniu yawned and got up, walking up to Quincy. "Quincy, it's late, why can't you show me tomorrow?" she asked.
"Because it won't work tomorrow, or even if it did, I would be busy. Just please Aniu, please come and looked at this!" Quincy pleaded, giving her puppy dog eyes.
Aniu sighed. "Oh, alright," she muttered, following Quincy outside. "Where are we going though?" she asked.
"You'll see," Quincy winked at her, and said it in a mysterious tone, making Aniu even more curious than she was just a second ago.
It took them five minutes to get to their destination, which was a dump full of broken bottles. Quincy walked into the dump, telling Aniu to wait for a moment, and grabbed the broken bottles, bringing them to Aniu.
"Come on, let's go somewhere where there is more space," Quincy suggested, and started to drag the bottles away from the dump, into the open.
Aniu bounded after him, worried. "Don't cut yourself, Quincy, I don't want you to get hurt!" Aniu barked, whimpering softly.
Quincy smirked at her. "Don't worry, I won't," he chuckled softly. He pushed the bottles into the moonlight, began to play around with them, for awhile, then stepped back. Then suddenly, bright lights came from the bottles and shone in the sky above them proudly.
Aniu gasped. "The northern lights!" Aniu's breath was suddenly taken away, and she caught it back, as she stepped forward to loo at them closer. "Quincy... it's beautiful..."
"Yeah... beautiful..."
Aniu looked into Quincy's eyes, seeing that he was looking at her instead. They both smiled at each other, and pressed their noses to theirs. They nuzzled each other lovingly, and they both laid down together, snuggling. Pretty soon, they fell asleep...
Quincy woke up surprised. He was laying on something, or someone. He looked down and saw it was Aniu. He gasped and quickly got off of her, and shook his pelt, trying to get the strange feeling he had caught out of him.
Aniu yawned when Quincy got off of her, and she looked at Quincy with a warm smile. "Hello, Quincy," she said softly. How was your sleep?"
Quincy smiled a little, but only fakely. "I had the best sleep I ever had in previous years," he yawned, stretching his legs out. "How about yours?"
"It was so amazing. I haven't slept like that for a long time," Aniu giggled, getting up. She suddenly began to feel sick in the stomach. "Hang on for a moment," she said, walking over to a bush and vomitting, then going back to Quincy. "I think we should go back to the pack, I'm not feeling so well," she mumbled, walking away slowly and Quincy following right behind her.
Along the way, Aniu felt a sharp pain in her stomach and collapsed, coughing hard.
"Aniu! Are you alright!" Quincy paniced, helping Aniu up and nuzzling her in comfort just in case she was frightened.
"I don't know, I'm not feeling so well," Aniu panted. She was scared. She didn't know what was going on. "Hurry, we need to get to the pack fast before I get more sick!" she coughed again, and they both rushed there. Once they made it, Quincy explained to Christi how sick Aniu was, so she and Yestin brought Aniu into their den and checked her over.
"Aniu! What happened to you! Did you eat something bad for you!" Christi asked, worried for her daughter.
"I don't know, all I ate was a rabbit yesterday, I don't know why I feel so bad!" Aniu cried.
Christi suddenly began to smile. "Quincy was with you when you came back and left, right?" Christi asked.
"Yes..." Aniu mumbled. Then the pain came again. "Argh! Mom!" she cried again.
Christi chuckled softly. "Congratulations Aniu, your expecting puppies!"
Aniu stopped whining and blinked in surprise. She looked up at her mother, shocked. "I'm expecting puppies...?" she asked in a softer voice. "Is that... is that a good thing...?"
Christi kept smiling. "It's a beautiful thing! Isn't it dear?" she asked, turning to face Yestin but was surprised that he was gone. "Uh... Yestin...?" her ears perked up when she heard cries of pain and yelling. She got up and ran quickly outside, seeing Yestin holding Quincy by the neck, choking him.
"You got my daughter pregnant with hybrid puppies, and now I'm going to kill you for that!" Yestin growled, smashing his head against the ground.
"Stop!" Christi cried, running at Yestin and knocking him off of his feet to the ground, making him let go of Quincy.
Yestin gasped and looked up, shock in his eyes. "You... you striked me...!" he said in shock, tears of fear forming his eyes.
"Yes, I did!" Christi growled. "And now I'm leaving, bringing Quincy and Aniu with me. Come on!" Christi began to walk away.
Quincy looked over at Aniu who was standing at the den with Kweku. He shrugged and began to follow her. Aniu also followed, and surprisingly, so did Kweku. They walked off in the distance with Christi until they disappeared out of sight from Yestin. And that was the last time they ever saw him.
Chapter Three
"So where are we going to go now?" Quincy asked as he followed Christi around by a river, Kweku and Aniu by his side.
"I don't know, it's getting dark, so we'll have to find somewhere quick," Kweku replied before Christi could speak. They walked farther and farther in the woods, until they spotted a den nearby. The scent of a fox was stale, it seemed like the fox hadn't come here in two years, so they decided to rest there until the next morning. Then they would start their journey again tomorrow.
Quincy woke up way before Kweku, Aniu, and Christi woke up. He got up and went outside to get some fresh air and exercise. His nose twitched when he smelt a rabbit, and followed the scent. When the scent got stronger and stronger, Quincy finally looked up and saw a rabbit eating some grass. Quincy hid quickly from it and stalked it through the trees. Just as he was about to pounce, there was a small snap sound like a twig. The rabbit's ears perked up and it fled to a nearby hole where it was safer. Quincy, ignoring the rabbit, froze and wondered what had made the sound. He yelled when suddenly something pounced on him and pinned him on his stomach by the back. He opened his eyes quickly and looked up, seeing a familiar looking dog standing over him, growling at him. Except he looked more scarred and like he had been in lots of fights...
"Emilianno! What the hell are you doing here!" Quincy asked, blinking at him in surprise.
"I'm here to kill you..." Emilianno growled, anger burning in his eyes. He bit into Quincy's neck, squeazing his throat hard and choking him. Quincy quickly kicked Emilianno in the stomach, making him yelp in surprise and let go. Quincy growled and charged to Emilianno, throwing him to the ground. He pinned him to the ground, but Emilianno bit into his neck again and brought him to the ground with him. They rolled through the snow, a ball of a scratching and biting frenzy. After awhile, Emilianno had Quincy pinned. He was about to scratch his eye out, when suddenly something grabbed his paw and through him to the ground.
"Christi! Get out of here or he'll kill you!" Quincy cried. Christi turned to look at him, but before replying, something suddenly stabbed thorugh her. Her eyes grew large and she fell limp to the ground, blooding coming from her mouth. She lied limp and never breathed again. Quincy stared at her with fright in his eyes, and looked over at Emilianno with a glare.
"You... you killed her...! GAH!" Quincy got up and charged at Emilianno. Emilianno yelped in surprise. He tried to escape Quincy's grip, but he couldn't since he was much more stronger from Christi's death. It took two minutes, until Emilianno finally gave in. He stopped breathing and laid limp under Quincy's massive body. He was dead for good. Quincy panted in exhaustion and stepped back. He was defineately exhausted from the fight, but at least he had avenged Christi. But how was he going to tell Aniu...?
"Mother! Mother, why did you have to leave me!" Aniu cried, sulking in Christi's soft fur. Quincy and Kweku tried their best to comfort her, but it didn't seem to work.
"Who would do such a thing to her!" Aniu kept crying, burrying her head in Christi's fur.
"An idiot Aniu, an idiot..." Quincy growled when the thought of Emilianno came to his mind.
"I'll bury her tonight, you guys can rest and we'll leave tomorrow," said Kweku, lowering himself so Quincy and Aniu could put Christi's body on his back easier. He then carried her off in the distance, where the sun was setting and getting the moon ready for night shift.
"Come on, just up this hill, and we'll make it to a cave somwhere!" Quincy yelled over the wind. During Quincy, Aniu, and Kweku's journey for two weeks, they had come across one of the most fierce storms in their life they have ever seen. They were making it up large mountains near Nome to look for a new home there. Quincy stopped immediately, also making Aniu and Kweku stop too. His eyes shifted towards a cave, which is where it was their chance to make their new home.
"Over there!" Quincy pointed out for Aniu and Kweku, and they both went inside. Quincy never noticed a scent though, because it was so cold outside, his nose was too numb to smell anything. Kweku and Aniu's weren't that bad, but they didn't seem to pay attention to smell either. They laid in the cave for ten minutes, then they finally fell asleep. An hour later, they were suddenly woken up by strangers. Quincy woke up first and looked over to a dark grey and cream wolf standing over him and snarling at him. Quincy blinked in surprise at this new stranger.
"Whoa! Who the heck are you!" Quincy raised a brow at him, trying to hide his fear of this larger wolf.
"Don't try to play innocent with me kid, I'm not that stupid!" Dewayne snarled, showing his big canines at Quincy.
"I outta kill right here, right now!" The wolf was about to go for Quincy's neck, but something interrupted.
"STOP!" The wolf's ears perked up and he looked behind him, seeing a Border Collie male standing behind him.
"Let him go, Dewayne. You know we don't harm loners unless they try to attack us," the border collie snarled.
"I'm sorry, Lord Maxwell," Dewayne whimpered, getting off of Quincy and bowing down to him. Quincy's ears perked right up at the name. Maxwell...? He thought to himself. That name sounds familiar to me, and so does the appearence... Quincy thought hard about who he was thinking of, and then it came into his head. It was his old child friend back at the farm, Maxwell. It had to be! He remembered clearly when his sister Vivianna came and told him that Maxwell had disappeared and the other farm dogs surrounding him said he ran off with a silver female wolf and he never came back. Could this really be him? Could the stories the farm dogs and Vivianna had told be true?
"Maxwell darling, where did these two wolves and dog come from?" Quincy turned his attention towards a brown female wolf with six puppies hiding behind her, studying the three of them curiously, but a little frightened of the strangers coming into their home out of nowhere. Another silver male wolf came up and studied them too.
"Maxxy, should we kill these trespassers before they cause trouble for us?" the sivler male wolf growled defendively.
"If they're injured it would be better killing them off than having more mouths to feed," another wolf, a black one growled softly at Quincy, Aniu, and Kweku, her fur puffing out and bristling to make her look bigger and scarier than them just like cats did.
"I agree with Julie, if they're bad, heres our chance!" another black male wolf growled also.
"Angela, Cristian, Julie, Kelvin, enough!" Maxwell's voice boomed above all of their questions, making them silence up quickly. He stared towards the new comer sternly.
"What's your name? I demand to know," Maxwell growled softly, showing his teeth a little to let Quincy, Aniu, and Kweku know he ment business and to try and not play games with him. Quincy blinked at him in surprise, and looked towards Aniu and Kweku, who were awake and staring at him as if they wanted him to do the talking for them, then he looked back at Maxwell. The Max he use to knew seemed so... different. He looked much more bigger and sounded more powerful and demanding than he use to. Quincy had to try to get him to recognize his old friend again though.
"Maxwell..." he said in a quiet tone.
"It's me, your old buddy Quincy back at the farm... remember? I was Vivianna's brother, and Vaughn's best friend, and you use to hang out and play with us too..." Maxwell stared hard at him, trying to figure out who this Quincy was. His eyes began to grow huge when he finally began to recognize him.
"Quincy...?" he asked in a surprised tone.
"Is that... is that really you?"
"Yeah... yeah, it is me, Maxwell. Your old buddy, Quincy..." Quincy's tail also began to wag when he saw Maxwell begin to wag his.
"Quincy!" Maxwell yelped in excitement, running over to him and licked him all over the face, to show how much he had missed him, and ignoring the surprised looks on his pack members' faces.
"How did you get here! What happened!" Maxwell asked, grinning largely as he stared at his friend straight in the eyes. Aniu and Kweku were also confused.
"Well, just sit down, and I'll explain everything," Quincy promised, so that's what Maxwell did. His pack sat down behind him, and so did Aniu and Kweku.
"After that time when I ran far off into the woods and looked for me and asked where I was and I said I was chasing a rabbit; I lied, I was actually chasing my mate Aniu here," said Quincy, pointing towards Aniu, then looking back at Maxwell.
"Then when I came back and we all went home because it was getting late, I went back to the barn and Emilianno and I got in a fight. He won and told me to never come back, so I did. Aniu was watching the whole thing, and told me I could come live with her. Her father didn't like me too much, but just to make his daughter happy, he took me in. My mentor with fighting and hunting was Kweku," said Quincy, pointing out Kweku to everyone, then looking back towards them.
"One day, I was using my trick on Aniu with those Aurora Borealis, and we... we fell in love, and created something beautiful that night. The next morning we went back to our territory, since we fell asleep under those northern lights, and everyone found out she was pregnant; with my puppies. So the alpha male, Aniu's father, Yestin, beat me up but I was saved by Aniu's mother, Christi. She told him right off that she was leaving him and told me and Aniu to come with her. But Kweku came too, and we all left and never saw him again. The day after that, I was found by Emilianno and I was almost about to die, until... Christi sacrificed herself to... to save me..." A tear rolled down his eyes, but he stopped the others from falling out.
"I brought the body back to Kweku and Aniu, and Aniu was so upset... so Kweku burried her and the next morning, we left. After two weeks of traveling, we made it to this cave and passed out for an hour, then you woke us up, and well... here we are..." Quincy mumbled, ears twitching.
"So about your story?" Kweku asked curiously, ears twitching.
"Well, it only started back on the farm," Maxwell began.
"I was guarding the flock of sheep on my land, as always, until a beautiful silver female named Ashlee came. She told me about her pack becoming instinct, and she wanted me to join. I wasn't going to, but she started to talk me as hard as she could into it, even giving me those cute puppy dog eyes," Maxwell chuckled softly.
"Anyways, I followed her to her pack territory. Her father didn't like me much, but he let me stay to make her happy just like you," said Maxwell.
"I lived a happy life, and earned the alpha's trust one day, but then my new mate, Angela came. I was already mates with the alpha's daughter, the silver wolf I was talking about, Ashlee, but I actually didn't like her. I only said yes or else she could complained to her father like a cry-baby she is." Maxwell rolled his eyes at the thought of her.
"So I cheated on her with Angela, and we both got banished, but we didn't care. Then one day, Ashlee's little brother, Cristian, came and told me that a rival pack called Red Pack came and invaded them, and he wanted us to help. I did, but I got knocked out and when I woke up, everyone was dead except Dewayne, Julie, and Kelvin. I brought them back to Angela and Cristian, and we decided to form a pack together, and we traveled for days until we found shelter, which is here. Then Angela had six puppies; three males and three females. I named the males Josh, Hamish, and Rick." Maxwell pointed to three of the six puppies beside Angela and him, who must have been Josh, Hamish and Rick.
"And Angela named the females Ursula, Candy, and Daphne." Then Maxwell pointed towards the other three, who were females.
"That's great," Quincy smiled.
"Listen uh, Maxwell. Now that we've reunited, can Aniu, Kweku, and I join your pack?"
"If it's alright with Aniu and Kweku." Quincy looked at Aniu and Kweku, who were smiling at the idea and nodded. Quincy grinned and looked back at Maxwell.
"They said yes," he said quickly. Maxwell grinned. "Great, welcome to the Blue Pack."
It had been one month and three weeks since Quincy had became an official member of the Blue Pack. After that many days, it was also time for Aniu's puppies to be born. Quincy had to wait outside though, since males were never aloud to watch puppies being born. Angela and Julie were helping though. Quincy whined and panted worriedly as he paced in front of the den, listening to Aniu's cries of pain. It took five minutes until the birth was finished, and Julie and Angela called them in quickly. Quincy came in alone and gasped as he saw nine beautiful, healthy puppies suckling Aniu's milk beside her.
"Nine puppies?!" Quincy asked in surprise, eyes growing a little huge.
"That's going to be a handful to take care of!"
Aniu giggled and sighed.
"Only three boys and six girls. Surprising, isn't it?" she asked.
"Yeah... should we name them now?" Quincy asked excitedly, wagging his tail also.
"Sure, you can name the first one," said Aniu, smiling warmly.
"Alright then, I'll name the first one..." Quincy looked towards the first female, which looked exactly like Quincy.
"How about... Deanna?" he asked. "Just a short form of Dianna, and that's what my mother's name was," said Quincy with a warm smile.
Aniu nodded with agreement and a pleased look on her face. "Good, now I'll name the next one." She looked at the second one, which had a dark brown spot on her back and dark brown toes, with a light brown face, legs, and tail, and a white chest, stomach, and also white under her tail.
"We can name her... Jana. It means God is Gracious, and God really is, I think," said Aniu, with a warm smile, as she licked Jana clean.
Quincy kept his grin on. "I think so too, so it's a perfect name for her," said Quincy, then looked at another female. She had Quincy's markings, except brown was surrounding her the light brown around her eyes.
"Genevieve? It is a long name, but we can just call her Gene. I think it means, "Female of the People" in French, so I want a puppy with a French name, just like I do," Quincy blushed a little.
Aniu nodded. "Good, good. I think we should start naming boys now." Aniu looked at the first male, and surprisingly, he also looked like Quincy too!
"How about... Kyler? It was a name after my grandfather on my mother's side before he passed away."
"Good, good," said Quincy. "I'll name the other male, and I think we'll save the last male." Quincy looked at the next male, which looked like him of course. "Ty? Only short for Tyler, that was my dad's name."
Aniu nodded, then looked at another female. She sighed with relief when she saw that there was at least one puppy that looked like her for the first time. "I think we should call her Bernadette. It's a French name, meaning "As Brave As A Bear"."
"Any French name is always fine with me," Quincy joked. "The next female should be..." Quincy looked at the next female, had his markings and colors, but also had white around her eyes. "Judy."
"Okay," said Aniu. "The next one shall be named..." Aniu looked at the last female, who looked just like Jana. "Jeannie."
"Alright, and the last one..." Quincy studied the last male, who looked exactly like Jana and Jeannie. "Hm... I'm kind of brain dead right now..." he thought to himself loudly. "Hm... Balto...?"
Aniu smiled. "That's a great name!"
Quincy smiled proudly. "Thank you!" he smiled, and nuzzled her lovingly. "I'll leave you alone, if you need rest," he said, getting up and walking out of the den to meet his new pack. Kweku and Maxwell ran up to him.
"So, were the puppies born healthy?" Kweku asked curiously, wagging his tail slowly. Quincy nodded slowly.
"Yep, they were."
"I remember when I first became a dad," Maxwell sighed happily at the thought, wagging his tail a little. "Say Quincy, you want to go for a walk while Aniu takes a rest?" he asked.
Quincy shrugged. "There's nothing to do, sure," he said, and they left together.
Kweku watched them both leave. "I'll stay here and guard the den!" Kweku yelled after them, and stood in front of the den, sat down and began to watch for them to come back.
Meanwhile, a young brownish-orangish-redish Border Collie male was running through the forest, tongue hanging out of his mouth as the wind pressed against his face. He seemed happy to be out and about in the wild by himself. He suddenly bumped into a large black and white thing. He looked up and growled, seeing another Border Collie, Maxwell with a Siberian Husky, Quincy standing in front of his way.
"Hey, watch where your going, pipsqueak!" Maxwell growled at the young Border Collie.
"Hey, don't call me a pipsqueak!" the younger male snapped.
Maxwel blinked in surprise. This dog seemed familiar to him... then it hit him like a freight train.
"Carter!" he growled.
"Maxwell!" he barked back.
"What are you doing here in the wild, shouldn't you be with your family!" Maxwell snapped, a little angry with this Carter.
"I don't need my stupid family, they're too bossy!" Carter growled. "I wanna run wild and free with no rules like you probably are right now!"
Mawell blinked in a little surprise, and a little irritated. He was speachless for a moment, but then his voice went back to him.
"Listen, Carter," he said, a little softer. "You should get out of here, before my pack finds you."
"Cool!" Carter barked outloud, hurting Quincy and Maxwell's ears a little. "Can I join!"
"No! Go home!" Maxwell suddenly snapped, surprising Carter. Carter whimpered. "But I don't want to, you don't know what it's like to be a house pet!"
"I know how it is, which is why I ran away!" Maxwell growled again.
"So all because you ran away because you don't want to be a house pet, doesn't mean I can't either?" Carter mumbled.
More anger rose in Maxwell, not because his little brother was annoying him, but because Carter was right. It wasn't fair that Maxwell got to do whatever he wants and Carter didn't. He sighed softly.
"Okay... you can join..." he said quietly.
Carter smiled and began to wag his tail again. "Really? YAHOO! When can I meet the pack!" he asked excitedly, running around Quincy and Maxwell in circles.
"If'll you'll calm down, that's when we'll meet the pack," Maxwell mumbled half to himself. "Carter, this is Quincy, my best friend. He's a hunter. Quincy and his mate, Aniu just had nine puppies today, so don't forget to congratulate him and Aniu later on," Maxwell introduced.
"Great! Can I be a hunter too?" Carter asked, still excited that the fact he was in a real wolf pack now later on to be surrounded by real wolves.
"We'll see. It depends on how great your hunting skills are," said Maxwell. "Come on, let's get back to the cave." All three nodded, and they all began to walk back to their pack territory.
"Guys, I would like to intruduce a new pack member."
Everyone in the cave turned their attention towards Maxwell, Quincy, and Carter, and gathered around.
"Wolves of Blue Pack, we welcome a new member into our pack. His name is Carter, he is a young brother of mine I found in the woods alone. He would like to join us, so please welcome him kindly." And not like you did with Quincy, Aniu, and Kweku. He thought to himself, a frown spreading across his face.
Cool... was all Carter was thinking though, his eyes twinkling with excitement and delight.
"I will be training him how to fight, hunt, and guard. Whichever one of those three things the best he is at, he will recieve that job," Maxwell continued. "Meeting dismissed."
All the wolves walked away and began to do their regular routines.
Quincy walked over to Carter and greeted him friendly like with the wag of his tail. "Congratulations, Carter. Welcome to the pack," he said softly.
"Thank you," Carter smiled.
Quincy smiled back.
One foggy afternoon, Aniu was sitting at the entrance of the den with her mate, Quincy, watching their puppies play with Angel and Maxwell's litter. She and Quincy were waiting for Maxwell, Dewayne, Angela, and Cristian to come back from teaching Carter a hunting lesson, so Quincy and Aniu were pretty much baby-sitting for Maxwell and Angel. Kweku, Julie, and Kelvin were out scouting for any tresspassers.
Aniu and Quincy's ears perked up in alert when they suddenly heard a gunshot. All the puppies whimpered and ran over to Quincy and Aniu. They both nuzzled them in comfort.
"What was that noise, mama?" Balto asked.
"I don't know, Balto, calm down," Aniu said softly, licking her son on the forehead softly. She looked up when suddenly Kweku, Julie, and Kelvin appeared and ran over to them.
"Aniu, we have to get out of here," said Kweku. "Hunters are on the way here, we have to get the puppies out of here safely." Kweku, Aniu, Quincy, Kelvin, Julie, and the puppies all turned their heads towards Maxwell, Dewayne, Angela, Cristian, and Carter who were running towards them.
"My babies! Are my babies alright!" Angela panicked. Her six puppies ran over to Angel and Maxwell whimpering, and seeking comfort from them.
"Hunters are on the way," Julie growled. "We need to get out of here!" There was another gunshot that interrupted, and it seemed closer.
"Quick! Grab the puppies, now!" Kelvin paniced. Maxwell grabbed Ursula & Ty, Dewayne grabbed Candy & Bernadette, ngela grabbed Daphne & Judy, Cristian grabbed Josh & Jeannie, Julie grabbed Hamish & Balto, Kelvin grabbed Rick, Quincy got Deanna quickly and put her on his back, Aniu picked up Jana in her jaws, Kweku caught Genevieve before she could even move, and Carter snatched up Kyler and locked him tightly in his jaws, and every pack member seperated in different ways to get the hunters confused a little.
Quincy and Aniu ran the same way. They heard another three more gunshots as they ran through the forest. Aniu and Quincy paniced more, hoping that none of the hunters got them, any of the pack members, and especially their puppies and each other. There was suddenly a gunshot louer than ever and Quincy collapsed to the ground.
"Quincy!" Aniu cried. Deanna whimpered and got off of her father's back and looked up at Aniu and Jana.
"Aniu," Quincy weezed. "Take Deanna and Jana to a safe place..."
Aniu fought back tears as she listened to Quincy's instructions and abandoned him. Tears rolled down her eyes as she heard another gunshot and a yelp of pain, knowing it was Quincy's cry and that he was dead. She ran and ran, until the gunshots had never came back again and she met up with the pack members again.
Chapter Four
"Aniu, please eat, you need more milk for the puppies and it'll make you feel better," said Angela softly, nudging a rabbit over to Aniu. Aniu looked at it. She sniffed it, then pushed it away and looked away. Ever since Quincy's death, she had never eaten for a week or did anything but lie in the same spot back in the old den, ignoring anything or anyone that tried to speak or give her something. Angela sighed and walked out of the den, over to Maxwell and sat beside him at the entrance. Maxwell watched closely as Carter played with his children, and Aniu's children play alone with each other.
"Aniu still isn't eating," Angela mumbled, ears twitching. "She's truely upset about the tragedy and what happened to Quincy.
Maxwell sighed. "It's already been a week. For Pete's sake, she has puppies to take care of, why isn't she thinking of them!" Maxwell growled a little, then sighed again, trying to calm himself from getting angry.
"We just need to give her a little more time, she'll get use to it soon," said Angela, putting a small smile.
"We already gave her enough time," Maxwell snapped, but not at Angela. "I think we should force her."
"No! If we force her, something bad might happen!" Angela said quickly, looking at Maxwell with crazy eyes.
Maxwell thought for a moment. "Your right," he mumbled as he still watched Carter with his neices and nephews and Aniu's offspring.
Balto wasn't playing with them, he was watching them from the side. He was also a little sad that his father died and his mother was always so depressed. Since he was the runt too, he wasn't really into rough-housing, or else he would always lose.
"Hey Balto."
Balto turned his attention to his sister, Bernadette. Bernadette was the only one that was nice to Balto and never hurt him during rough-house. She wasn't like his other siblings.
"You want to come exploring with me?" she asked. "I want to go somewhere far away from here, but nobody will let me go unless I have an adult with me, but I don't want an adult, I want a brother or a sister instead, and nobody else I asked will go with me. Do you?"
Balto shrugged. "Sure, it'll be much more interesting getting out and about then being stuck at this old boring place," he sneered. They both got up and snuck away from the other pack members without letting them see them.
Balto and Bernadette explored the forest for a very long, until Balto noticed how foggy it was turning again. It scared him because his father had been killed in the fog.
"Uh, Bernadette," he whimpered. "I think we should go home now, it's getting foggy and our dad was killed the fog."
Bernadette thought about that, and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we should go," she said.
As soon as the two puppies were about to leave, a voice stopped them.
"Your not going anywhere!"
Bernadette and Balto gasped and looked around them, seeing three large grey wolves surrounding them.
"Well, well, well, Ramon, what do we have here?" a female sneered out of the other two males.
"I don't know Charlotte, what do you think Zane?" Ramon asked, looking towards the other wolf behind him.
"I think those are trespassers," Zane growled, blocking Balto and Bernadette's way.
"Well what are we guys waiting for, get them!" Charlotte growled, and all three grabbed Bernadette and Balto by their scruffs very hard, making them cry loudly in pain.
"Stop hurting my puppies!"
Charlotte, Ramon, Zane, Balto, and Bernadette all turned their attention towards Aniu, who pounced at the three loners and made them let go of her two children, making them cry in pain. All four or them wrestled in a frenzy. Aniu struggled to send out a message to Balto and his sister.
"Go! Go tell the other pack!" she shrieked and struggled for life. She knew she was going to lose against them, since she hadn't eaten for awhile which made her weak, plus no wolf could take on three more than him or herself.
Balto and Bernadette fled back to the pack territory. They got Maxwell and Kweku and brought them back to Aniu and the fight, but it was too late. Charlotte, Ramon, and Zane were gone, and Aniu lied motionless on the ground, not breathing. But the last thing on her mind before she died was her family, and the last thing she heard was Quincy's voice...
Chapter Five
"No, mom, wake up!" Balto whimpered, shaking her, but she didn't move. "We got to go home." Aniu still didn't move. He began to cry and looked at Maxwell and Kweku to do something. "Is she... is she going to be okay?" he sniffled.
Maxwell hung his head. "No..." He shook his head. "She'll be okay now, but she can't be with you anymore..."
Balto and Bernadette gasped and whimpered, knowng it was their fault for Aniu's death. If they hadn't wandered off, they wouldn't have got involved with those three nasty wolves that killed her, but Aniu still would have died starving herself and falling ill too.
"Come now, we must go home," said Kweku, picking up Aniu's motionless body and carrying it home with Maxwell, Balto, and Bernadette.
Balto felt guilty the whole trip. At some parts, he almost fell and began to cry, but he kept catching himself before he could. Once they got to the pack, Balto went into the den and laid down, closing his eyes. He couldn't bare to stare at his mother any longer. He began to fall asleep and drift off into dreamland, about the good times he, his mother, and father had.
A smile spread across his face slowly.
