The Life of a Wolf

Brightness filled my vision

Morn’ has come

A good morn’

The clouds are white as snow and the grass is green

The air is clean and the dew is cold

As I walk through the grass breathing softly as I go

Life forms, big and small, awake and harkens to the song of the warm breeze

The plains, though just awakening, was and will always be filled with life

The sun is bright though I am still cool

No more do I have a winter coat

A cleaner and more beautiful coat do I have now

Keeping me warm and cool depending on the environment itself

To the North I nose a fox

No doubt to get a young deer or lamb that has wondered from its parent

In the South I smell a field mouse still in her den

Cleaning her little den as usual, a thing she has done even before I was born

Passing by a berry bush

I hastily snap a few of the ripe fruit from where they hung

For the bush is not mine but the whole plain’s

Whoever got to the bush first gets the fruit

Late morn’ has come and the air is warmer

The scent of seeds is in the air

This causes me to sneeze after a while

I perk my ears to the cry of the red-tailed hawk as he flies above, scaring his prey from the sky

Then distinctively I hear a sound

A sound that I’ve heard only once in my life

I hear it again, and I am now cautious, for the sound was made from one whom I know

Sinking low, I disappear from view in the long grass

Only from above can one see me

However the one whom I stalk can not see me unless she has grown wings to do so

The sound comes again but closer now

I am certain of who it is

I was about to spring when the one whom I stalked leaped on me

We rolled in the long grass, upsetting birds and bugs alike

“Shame!” and “Please do watch where you’re going!” followed after we passed

Finally I pinned my once prey and now attacker to the ground

It was my twin sister

Who was born, like me, under a full white moon, blessing us with many envied gifts

Alike in fur markings and almost facial features, one wouldn’t have told us apart

Only our voices and gender revealed our difference

Our laughter filled the air as we joyfully exchanged news

My sister was pregnant

And I was to become an uncle within a few days

My spirit had never soared higher

I told my kin about my travels

For I was a wonderer and I’ve seen many things and made many friends

She listened to my words, catching every detail; for she loved hear my tales

Noon’ came when my tale ended

Then my twin jumped on her feet and bowled me over

Playfully nipping and pawing at my throat and limbs

I did the same in return

We romped until the day came to its end

When the sun had gone to its rest and the stars were revealed

My sister and I said our farewells and promised to meet each other soon

For our love for each other is close

With a graceful flick of her tail, my twin ran off to join her pack

The moon is almost down

Our time together has ended, my friends

I’ve told you of my daily life

Now it’s time for you to take your leave

Perhaps my tale will be passed on

I’ll never know

However, I do know that some day, my tale will be carried beyond the distant mountains

On the voices of my brothers and sisters
