LESSONS OF THE WILD
Six Months Old
One day,young Silver was walking down to the river.She trotted over to her favorite log,and walked out onto the end.She was terribly hungry,and couldn't resist trying to catch a salmon swimming next to the log.Silver got down as far as she could,and swiped her paw through the water."Dang it."She yipped."It would have been easier if I could see it when I'm crouched down."This time she stood strate up and tryed again.She lost her balance and fell into the water!"Oh,no!"She yelped.She put her paws on the log and pulled herself up as hard as she could.In the struggle,the log had slipped loose from the river bank,and was now drifting down stream.She had managed to pull herself up,but now there was no way she could get back to land.Silver looked up at her white/grey wings,witch at the moment matched the color of her fur.Her mother told her that when she was 8 months old,her fur would be ither black or white."Mom says don't try to fly,your wings won't be stong enough untill your a year old...what do I do..."Silver mumbled.She looked around frantically,for someway -besides flying- to get to land.She had been searching for at lest a hour,all the while the log seemed to be speeding up,as if chaseing somthing,when she looked ahead to see a gaint water fall!Once again the log sped up."No..."she whisperd.Silver closed her eyes as the log got colser and closer to the waterfall.She new she had to fly.She pushed off as hard as she could,and soared up into the wind.
She opened her eyes and relized,little by little,she was falling.She kicked her paws franically for the slitest touch of ground, and landed-not quit so gracfully- on her rear,bounced,and shook her self as hard as she could.She stood up,and looked around.All she saw was the water fall,some fallen trees,a big cave with huge rocks next to it,and a owl circleing over head."The little wolf was having fun.Untill she slipped by the salmon run.Now she's lost in my forest,Well done!Well done!"It crooned."What?"Silver asked."Being lost is not much fun.Unless your lost with someone."The owl hooted."I saw a pack across my forest.They heard you yelp,they will be hear soon.""You know,that didn't rythm."Silver said,amazed she was having a conversation with a owl.
"Who-o-o,said it had to-o-o,young wolf princess?""Well,you have a point ther--wait,did you say...princess?"She asked,alittle surprised."Well of course.Any fool can see,your the doughter of Star and Luna.Don't tell me you don't know your own parents!?""Well I know Star's my dad's name,but mom...mom died after being attacked by a bear.""Haha!A bear you say?No,no!Luna was murdered by nonother than Zorro!!Star's brother!!!"Silver stood speachless."Well,let's see here...it must have been five or six months ago.Star was the alpha of the 'NorthWings' pack.Luna had just had her first litter of pups,and Zorro new to be alpha,he had to kill Luna and her pups,then Star.Worse yet,all the other wolves wanted Zorro to lead the pack!Star was so angry after Luna was killed,that he killed Zorro without hesitation.""Wow."Was all Silevr could manedge to say.suddunly,Silver heard a sound she had only heard once befor,a wolf howl.She through back her head and howled a long,low note."Well I must be going now."And with that,the owl flew away.Not five second after the owl left,a pack ten or elleven wolves emerged from the brush behind Silver."Well,I'll be a monkys aunt!It's Luna's girl!"Yipped a dark brown wolf."Naa,it couldn't be!""See for your self,Juneau!Wings and all it's all right there!""Step aside!"growled a low voice."You know how foolish it was to howl?You led us strate to you!""I couldn't help it!It just kinda came out,and--""And nothing.If you truly are the doughter of Luna,we have to kill you!""Jean!"barked a brown wolf,who had stomach that looked like it was snow becouse it was so white."Clear a path for our guest!""No,Lilac!Never!I'll never listen to a pup!"
"You will when I'm done with you!"Lilac yelled.and in an instant,she was on top of the wolf called 'Jean'.A dark brown wolf with a light brown stomach leapt out of the croud and landed next to Lilac."Do you need any help,Lilac?"He asked"Sure,Ajax.Just drag him out to the cave.It looks like somebody needs a little nappie-poo.Yes he does!"Lilac said in a baby voice.The wolves burst into laughter,including Silver,who was curantly rolling on the ground and crying becouse she was lauughing so hard!She cought a glimps of a redish/brown wolf walk forward a little,still laughing,stumble and fall,and hit his head on a rock.All the other wolves laughed harder now,even the red/brown wolf,who was on the ground with his paws on a bump on his head,laughing and crying.Silver didn't know if he crying becouse he was laughing so hard or if he was crying becouse his head hurt.She got up and stumbled over to the red/brown wolf.She manedged to choke bake her laughter to ask if he was allright."Yeah" he said,still laughing alittle"The name's Toboe."Nice to meet you,Toboe.I'm Silver."She said.Then she turned her atintion to Lilac,who looked to be the same age as herself."Thank you."Silver said."I asume your the alpha of this pack?""Correct,I am the alpha.But if you are the doughter of Luna,you are the rightful alpha,And I must step down."Silver looked at Lilac suprissed how wise she was for how old she was."Haha!!Just jokeing.I'm as big a goof ball as Toboe over there,who I saw you allready met."She said gestering to Toboe,who was still laughing and shoving his buddys around for mocking him."Any way,I'm Lilac.That wolf over there is Ajax,"She said pointing to the dark/light brown wolf."And there's Toboe.We are all the six month old pups in my pack.""Ok."Silver said."I'm Silver.
""So were are you staying tonight,Silver?"Lilac asked.Silver looked at the ground saddly."Well,you see,I'm.....I'm lost..."Silver explained what happend to her to get her were she was.She was half way through her story when she saw Jean getting ready to pounce on Lilac.She leaped over Lilac and landed on top of Jean.He looked up at her with couredly eyes.Silver bared her teeth and learched fowered as if to bite Jean.He closed his eyes and yelped,only to open his eyes to see teeth and a nose.He relized she hadn't really bit him and he began to blush."Next time you step out of line,I won't be as generous."Silver said through bared teeth.She jumped off of Jean back to Lilac."Now,where was I?"she said."Luna used to do that to...to you-know-who."Said an old grey wolf."You knew my mother?""Well of course.I also know that you are indeed her doughter.I remember when you were first born.Your mother named you first,and last.She had no time to name any other pups.She was killed along with the other pups.Star got there two minutes to late.You were the only pup he could save.By the way,I'm Lilly."*groan*Silver looked down at her stomach,and rememberd how hungry she was."Umm...by any chance...do you guys have any food?Not to be rude but...."Silver said."Of course we have food,Silver."Said Lilly."We allways have food for our alphas.""Alpha Silver.That has a nice ring to it."Silver thought."Well actally,we're rusty screwed when it comes to food."Lilac said."We were just about to move territories and--"Lilac was cut of in the middle of he sintence when she spoted a deer.
The deer was mulling around,grazing,munching,chewing.Honestly,Silver thought the deer knew they were there,it just didn't care.Suddunly,a young,possibly new-born deer stumbled out of the bush behind the doe.The doe looked up to check her sorroundings and noticed the good sized pack of wolves standing less than fifty feet away from her.In a panic,she fled from her baby and into the cave she was next to."Tod,Copper,Lilly,QuickSilver,and not Jean,go ahead and get the baby.Silver,Ajax,and Toboe,come with me."Lilac anouncced."Only those who bravely enter will be rewarded."Crowed a raven."Did that raven just talk?"Asked Lilac."You'll never find what your looking for.If the searcher were to find that wich is searched for,it would become a mere object."It said."Only those who bravely enter....who bravely enter...who bravely enter."The raven said the same words untill Silvers group entered the cave."Are you sure that we should let them eat the baby,I mean,that's kinda heartless,eating a baby deer."Silver said."Every things 'kinda heartless' when you're a wolf.We're just doing what we need to do to stay alive.Even though it may seem heartless,that's just the way it is."Lilac responded."So,it's like humans hunting wolves.It's cruel,but they're just doing it to survive."Silver said."Exacatacally!"Lilac said."Heheh.Exacatacally.Exacatacally.Exac-atac-ally. Exacatacally.EXACATACALLY!!!Ok I'm done now."Lilac said.Silver soon learned that if Lilac said a word she liked,she would repeat it over and over and over and over again.She was as -if not more- goofy than Toboe.
And Silver also learned that that was hard to do."We've past this tree befor."Toboe said saddly."We went left last time."Silver said.She began to walk to the right,and she tripped over a tree root.Toboe ran over to her and got beneth Silver befor she hit the ground.Silver got off of Toboe and looked up at the tree."It might have been a oak tree."She said.She had to take a guess,for the tree was dead.All the wonderful green leaves had fallen off and were now brakeing down into dust and dirt on the cave floor.The light brown coler had left the tree,and now it was in a state white like grey.The small group continued through the cave in search of the deer."So Silver,tomarrow,I can start training you to be alpha of the NorthWings pack."Lilac said."Great!"Silver yipped."But...Lilac...how did you get wings?If this really is my fathers pack...than you would have to be my sister.The owl said I was the only pup that surrvived."Silver asked"That's not importent right now."Lilac snapped."Oh,ok."Silver said,her head hung low.She looked up an saw the deer by yet another tunnle.The deer looked up and stared Silver strate in the eyes,then ran down the tunnle.The group moved on down through the tunnle,untill they came to two diffrent paths.They could go left or right.
"Silver,Toboe,you two go right.Me and Ajax will go left."Lilac said.Silver took off without hesitation,Toboe close on her heels.They stoped at a dead end,full of crystals and jewls of all kinds."Wow"Silver and Toboe said together.After gaping at the jems for two or three seconds,they relized the deer was next to them.Silver howled,and her beutiful voice rang through out the cave.She knew Lilac would be there soon.Silver lunged up at the deers throught.The deer reared in fear,and hit it's huge head on the ceiling.A small clod of dirt about the size of Silver's papa's paw fell from the ceiling,making a hole,all the jewls an jems and diamoneds lit up like the northern lights,casting casscades of color along the walls of the cave.The deer looked at the wall,and fell over dead. "Hey...I never knew I could see in color..."Toboe said."Yeah...me nether..."Silver said between breths.Toboe and Silver looked at each other,and it seemed as if they were reading each other's thoughts.Silver inched closer to Toboe.Toboe leaned fowred and was about to kiss Silver when...
"WOW!"a cry came from behind them."AMAZING!"Silver snapped out her trance and looked up at Lilac."Aww, how sweet!"She said."A romantic death seen!Wait...""Aw,lay off!"Toboe said."Aww,but you two soo young to be in love!!^^"Lilac chukled,puting her paws on Silver's shoulders."You heard Toboe!Now paws off me!"Silver growled softly."Aww,the little wofie lovebirds defending each other!How cute!"Silver could feel her blood begen to boil.She couldn't take this any longer!"I said paws off!!!!!"She yelled.She kicked Lilac off of her,grabbed Toboe and ran to the exit.Once she was out of the cave she stopped and looked at Toboe.She nuzzled him gentaly and said"Toboe,thank you for defending me.""Oh,it was nothing."Toboe said,now blushing."I know this place by the Firefly River,it's a cave for an entire pack with deer and caribou and bison,you'd love it there."He closed his eyes and named off everything he rememberd."Its right by the mountains,and there's a lake,and the ocean,the ocean is just wonderful!No humans ether!The best part is the Lunar Flowers!"He concluded."Ok,let's go!"Yipped Silver.Toboe led the way past rivers and mountains,and herds of caribou.There were eagle nests,and robins,but Silver's favorite by far were the blackcap chikidees.They were playfull and energetic and reminded her so much of Toboe.It took them three days and three nights to reach the FireFly River.And Toboe wasn't exgerateing when he said the river was 'right by the mountains.'Silver's eyes widend and her head darted from the mountains,to the cave,to the river.Toboe giggled at the site of her looking so amazed."The cave is about 100 to 150 yards away from the river."Silver stated"And the mountains are 500 yards away."
"How'd you learn that kinda stuff?"Toboe asked,alittle surpised."When you live with only you father,you have to learn allmost every thing."Silver said.She was so worried about her father,that she forgot that the cave was on the other side of the river."KALABANGA!!!!"Toboe yelled,jumping into the river.The resounding splash soaked Silver,and snapped out of her thoughts.She laughed,and jumped into the water.Silver and Toboe swam and splashed eachother all after noon.Finnally,they got out of the river,shook them selves of and got some dried grass for the cave.'The cave looks like a pack cave.'Silver thought.After they had the cave all set up,Toboe took Silver back down to the river.They lied on thier backs and watched the clouds roll by.Just talking.Not talking about any paticular subject.Just geting to know eachothers likes and dislikes.They talked about thier love of chewing fresh bones,and how they both hated humans and sguirrles.Silver couldn't help but giggle when she found out Toboe was affraid of cats.
Every now and then,they would stop and tell eachother what a surrtan cloud looked like,there was a wolf,a caribou,a fox,a wolverine,a bear,a raven,and of all things vile and discusting,a squirrel.Finnally,it was sun set.Toboe got up and walked to the river.Silver followed.The sun had turrned the river a perfect peach color."Wow."Silver said"It's buitfull.""Yeah...Buitfull."Toboe said,staring at Silver longingly.The two puppie's eyes cought,and Silver had a feeling unlike any any other.She didn't know what it was,but she loved it."Ahem."Silver looked up on the hill and saw Lilac looking down on her.Toboe nuzzled Silver,and left the two alone."Hi."Lilac said.Silver just scoffed and turned away."Look,I'm soo sorry about earlier...I'm just really stressed out,and I don't know why I took it out on you."Lilac laughed"I guess that kick in the gut woke me up and made me relize what I was doing."
"Oh,you think your stressed?Try living in a pack with two wolves!Try scavvinging out of humans trash!Try falling into a river and almost drownding!!"Silver raged."You're right."Lilac whimmped"I have know idea what your life is like.And I'm sorry."Lilac got up to leave."I really am sorry Silver..."She turned tunerd to go to the pack."Lilac!"Silver yelled after her"Stay here tonight.It's a three day run to the pack.Tomarrow,we move here."
Three Days Later
"Allright everyone!"Lilac anuocced"Silver is the new pack alpha!"The pack broke into cheers and wooting.The teens got together and howled.Silver climed to the top of the cave,and howled a long buitful howl.She closed her eyes and felt her chest vibrate with the note.Soon the entire pack was howling songs of joy and playfulness.The pack slept extremely well that night.Exept Silver.No matter how much she tried to sleep,that one little thought kept nagging her.Is Dad ok?She asked herself that a million times,at least.Lilac awoke in a jolt.She shudderd as she her dream came back to her.She looked at the cave exit and saw Silver looking at the stars pondering the answer to the quistion of her father."Hey."She said walking up to Silver."Hey.""Watcha' thinkin' about?"Lilac asked."My Dad."Silver replied."I'm really worried about him.He never was a very good hunter.I did most the work."Silver whispered.Lilac giggled."Well I'll tell you what,how about,tomarrow,after the hunting group returns,you could get a group together and go find him?""Well I'd like to...but I have to take care of the pack."Silver said saddly.
"Oh,we could leave that to Ajax!!He's strong enough.You should see his mussels!"Lilac mummbled to Silver.Silver started giggling,then burst out laughing."SHHHH!!!!"The majority of the pack hushed Silver."Sorry..."Silver said choking back giggles."Sooo,whatcha' think.?"Lilac asked."Your sure Ajax can handdle the pack?""Yup.""AND Jean?""DURR!!!""Well.....ok."Silver finally agreed to her plan.The next day,Silver,Lilac,Toboe,Lily,and Chester went out to find Star.They ran over to the river that Silver fell into,and ran south towerds her old den.She finnally found it,but it was torn to sheds.Silver's father had never found a cave,so he built thier den out of fallen pine tree branches.Silver Tilted her head back to sniff the air for his sent.Nothing.She looked to hte mountains,and about 50 yards away,she saw a puddle of blood."No....she whisperd.She ran over to it and sniffed it.The sent commfermed her worst fear.It was her father's blood.She looked to the mountains once again,and saw bloody paw prints leading up the moutains.She ran off with out a word.They were about 254 feet up,when finnally Silver saw somthing.
She heard coughing and wheezing,and looked towerd the source of the sound.There,in the first snow of winter,lied a body.She ran as fast as she could to it.She looked down and cried."It's your father,isn't it?"Lilac asked.Silver nodded.Lilac looked down at the light tanish brown wolf soaked in blood."L-Luna?"Star asked.He tried to open his eyes,but it was useless.Silver chuckled broken heartidly."No dad,it's me...Silver."She said."Ohh...Silver!"Star cried.He coughed again."Don't try to talk!"Silver scolded.Star finnally got his eyes open and stared up into Silver's navy blue eyes."You must be wondering....what happend to me.""Yeah."Silver said."I was.....attacked....by a wolf....named.....Jean."Slowly,the light began to leave his eyes.Silver knew there was no use yelling his name,like in all the movies.So she just lay her head down on his chest,and cried.She finnally got up and let out the saddest sounding howl she had ever heard.Lilac felt dull and sad,just as Silver did.And Silver noticed a tear run down Toboe's cheek.But he quickly wiped it away.Silver lead the way back to the pack,only to find Jean ordering them to move den locations."If we don't leave now,the opposeing pack will come and slaughter us all!!"He yelled."You..."Silver growled."YOU BASTURD!!!!!!"She yelled.She ran down from the hill like a lightning bolt,and jumped on top of the cave.Jean looked up at her smiling evily.She showed no sighn of pity,nor mersy.She jumped off the cave and Jean ran,trying to get out of her way.But to no avail.She grabbed his front leg,and pulled him down.Silver began tearing into his silky white pelt,blood now staining her fur.Jean looked up at her with a mixed expreision of fear and insanity."If there's one thing I've learned from you..."Silver said,puting her jaws around his throught,"Is that revenge tastes like BLOOD!!!"She chopped her jaws closed and watched as the light left Jean's eyes."If any f you want to follow in Jeans paw prints..."Silver annocced"Then LEAVE MY PACK NOW!!!"No one botherd moving.Silver had just proven her self as a alpha that could win a war single handely.
