Larka’s Memory and Blessing

Born in the den her enemy was born

a white wolf with the power of Sight

Coming to show the wolves freedom’s light

Then Man came and hunted them down like

Crows looking for corn

The wolf pack left without a trace

Though they did not know what they were going to face

Then out of the darkness their greatest enemy stood before them

Morgra, a she - wolf, sleek and gray

When the wolf pack refused their wishes

She turned on them and the accusations turned

With her eyes filled with anger and hate

She laid upon them a curse

“By the power of Sight itself,” she cried.

“Your little ones may grow but everyone in your pack shall break,

For they only bring suffering and hate.”

With terrible howl she vanished into the night

Many days passed

And soon the pack was reduced to five

Together they faced the elements of earth

And braved them with love and friendship

Larka learned the secrets of the Sight from wisdom

Of others and herself

She led an army of wolves against Morgra

Though she fought hard

She knew she couldn’t escape her destiny

She over came the powers of darkness

And threw Morgra to her knees

But then Morgra blocked a bridge

That crossed a huge ravine

Larka then knew her destiny was here

Fur, blood, fang, and claw flashed in the moonlight

As her family watched with horror

The bridge began to fall

In her heart she knew what to do

But in her mind anger flew

“Don’t I have a choice?” she thought.

“Can’t I live and be happy?”

Then her eyes caught sight of a ledge not far from where she stood

“No,” she thought. “To truly love wolves must see.

They must understand pain and suffering.”

As the bridge fell into the ravine Larka jumped

She might’ve made it but as she was caught between the bridge and the ravine

She was also caught between past and future

But between the ravine, the ledge, past and future

Stepped reality

Many days passed since Larka’s death

Since that night, her family stayed in the shadow of the mountain

Her brother and love were both losing the will to live

But then an eagle passed the reasons of living back into their minds

And finally the family departed from the mountains

One night Larka’s love had a dream

From the forest’s mist she came

Blood gone from her beautiful white fur

Her eyes shining the way Kar used to know

“Love is what protects us from anger, fear, hate, and loss.” she said

“That’s why it’s the greatest power of all.”

“Love Larka?” asked Kar. “We are commanded to love

Wasn’t it love that began this journey of suffering and hate?”

“Perhaps love is cunning Kar.” Larka said, touching her nose to his

“But love is not a commandment. It is a need as real as you and I talking now.

But like a bird love must be free.  Free to leave and free to return.”

“My time is coming closer,” she said.  “My blessing to you is

Whenever darkness ever tries to consume you

Learn to hold on to the truth.”

“What do you mean?” asked Kar

“Whenever everything around you seems conspiring to tear out your heart

And show you only power and survival; look up, Kar, in the sky,

The moon still beyond we who are still ignorant to see around us

Hold it like love Kar, and remember me

“I’ll never forget you or the journey Larka.” he cried. “Never.”

“And learn to heal your mind.” said the she – wolf

“How?” asked Kar

The mist parted and a waterfall appeared. Trees also appeared

“By going out of the cave of your mind and looking at your surroundings

By going into your own thoughts and opening your eyes on the mists that furl the mountaintops

And the waterfalls that shimmer past the rocks.  By looking upon the lakes that lie a sign among the trees and the mighty rivers that lead to the see.  For it is you, Kar.”

Larka looked into Kar’s eyes. “Kar, can you promise me something?”

“Anything!” he cried.

“Promise me that whenever you love someone you tell them

Don’t keep it a secret.”

“Stay in the light.” she whispered.

The mist swept over her and she disappeared.

“Where are you Larka?” asked Kar.

The mist thickened and a vision appeared.

Butterflies flew in overlapping fields

Wolves rolled and played in the sunlight

Waterfalls gave crystal clean water

And there were woods where no hunter could hide

“I am here,” said Larka, her voice surrounding Kar.

“I am in the rain and skies. I am in the trees and flowers.

I am in the sunlight and in the moonlight too.”

Larka and the dream were gone.
