The dust was smothering me; my eyes squint and watered as the dirt shifted through the air and into my eyes. I did the best I could to try and spot an enemy attacking. They were afraid of me and I knew it. I spread my stance as I heard the dirt crunch under an approaching wolf’s paw. I jumped in the air and I saw its shadow pass under me. I slashed my paw across his back and slammed his neck in my jaws. I felt his blood run down my throat as smiled as I heard more approaching.
I spun the limp wolf in my muzzle and threw him into the shadow running at me and pinned the one running next to him. “Still think you can get me,” I snarled then grinned. I felt him flinching underneath me and shook my head in shame. I pulled his throat out and prepared for the remaining attackers to approach.
The dust finally began to settle and I smirked at the bodies of my attackers scattered around the ground. All that stood was the wolf I hit with his comrades body, he stood shaking his claws dug into the ground. I took slow steps towards him and with each step he muttered a whimper and pulled his head back in towards his body. Once I stood face to face with him I snapped my jaws shut and he fell whimpered onto the ground. I shook my head and turned away from him and bolted into the unfamiliar woods I was headed towards before I was ambushed.
My attackers were a small group from my training squad who were sent to kill me. I didn’t know what my pack’s Higher was thinking sending these useless fighters after me. He knew I was the top fighter of any of the wolves in that pack and others. I don’t know why but it just was just as easy as breathing or walking for me. They say it came from my dad, an accomplished general just under our pack Higher. I hated him for it; he was supporting the torture of others and expected me to follow right behind him.
Of course, I did not, which is why I’m in this situation, running from our dying pack into woods I’ve never seen. Only to live the rest of my life fighting off other wolves and scavenging for food. I’m really not looking forward to it, but better that then live like my father.
The woods felt uncomfortable under my paws and the musty air frightened me as I ventured further into the boundaries of the woods. There was the occasional bird or small prey that would flap or scurry nervously away from me but no sign of other wolves. I yawned a bit bored at the little life in the barren forest and searched for a small place to rest. I didn’t have intentions on making a den quite yet; the ground would suffice for a bed for now. I found an area of soft ground and smirked at it’s feeling under my paws. I let out one more, long yawn and licked the small wounds I got from my fight earlier after laying in the light grass underneath me.
It was only a few hours since I ran and things were already looking positive, but that would only last for so long. It wasn’t long after I picked up a scent from several wolves; their scent was unfamiliar, from another pack. I snarled to myself and dug my claws into the tree that towered over my resting spot. I pulled myself up the tree as best I could and got to the first branch. As I threw myself onto the first branch I got my balance and began to leap up towards the branches just above. I was about five branches up when the surface of the branches were smaller and harder to catch balance on.
I decided to stop where I was about twenty or more feet from the ground below and watch as the scent began to get even closer. My legs were getting even more tired standing on the branch so I laid my body carefully down onto it. The scent was so close I could tell the number of wolves and weather they were male or female. It was five males and two females and they were sniffing everything in sight. I could tell they were looking for something, most likely hunters from another pack searching for food. I cringed a bit as I saw one of the females sniff the spot where I slept, it was obvious she could scent a wolf was there.
“Hey, I got something,” shouted the female to another of the wolves she traveled with.
Two males came over and scented my spot as well, “Is it her?”
The female rolled her eyes and sarcastically said, “No, I’m sure there are hundreds of young female wolves running all over these woods.”
The male she spoke to snarled as the rest of the group laughed, “Well, then where is she you ignorant bitch, the scent ends here”
The group’s laughter hushed and the female sunk her head down and didn’t answer. I had become very curious of these two wolves they were searching for. I pulled myself further forward on the branch to get a better view of the situation but didn’t realize how weak the branch really was. It made several loud cracks which immediately caught the attention of the wolves underneath me.
“That’s her!” one of the males shouted pointing his muzzle directly at me. I yelped and tried to scramble back towards the thicker portion of the branch. However my movement only disturbed the branch even more which made several loud cracks in response. Finally, it gave it, the branch snapped away from the truck sending me tumbling off and onto the lowest branch. I grunted loudly in pain as I slipped off that branch and onto the soft grass directly in front of the mob that had spotted me.
They quickly surrounded me all of them snarling their heads lowered in an attack position. I shuffled to my feet and looked in the eyes of all my attacks and grimaced. “That’s not the kid, Who are you!” one of the males shouted.
I only gulped and shook my head. “That was a question!” the female wolf who mocked the male earlier snarled.
I took a strong stance with a growl. “No one of importance to you assholes,” I snarled. I think it was my comment that made them snap or maybe it was the growl, but either one sent all seven of them flying at me in a fury of claws and teeth. I jumped over the rushing mob causing them to bite and rip at each other for a few. One had his throat ripped by his comrade which could of cared less. The remaining six circled me and I smiled at their challenge.
“What’s so funny loner” asked the same female.
“You, all of you. How you think that your numbers over me guarantees your victory” I said.
“Wait, what?” asked the female obviously confused at my response.
One of the males huffed and shook his head “Idiot. He mans just cause we out number him does not mean we can beat him.”
The female snarled at him, “Oh shut up,” she turned to me, “we don’t need numbers to beat you.”
I smiled as she began to fall for my short thought plan. “Well then, you think so strongly of yourself, why don’t you take me on alone” Her snarl quickly faded into a slight grin.
“You honestly think you can beat me alone?”
“That is what I said” I smirked even wider as she sent the wolves that surrounded off of me. She stood alone in front of me with the most confident stance she could manage to show. I held in a laugh and resumed a comfortable stance.
“You sure you up to this,” I spoke mockingly which obviously only made her angrier. She snarled loudly and lowered her body closer to the ground. I chuckled again failing to hide it which made her angrier still.
“You’re dead mutt,” she barked
“Not if it’s up to you to kill me,” I smiled and she snapped. She lunged all her weight strait at me which I easily stepped out of the way of. She turned her body immediately after landing and changed at me, her muzzle open wide showing all her sharp fangs. She stuck her neck out and snapped her jaw at my head. I lowered it in time to snap my head back up where she bit smashing my head into her lower muzzle. She yelped and jerked her head back which opened me to gripping her neck into my jaws. I spun her hard into the grin only making her mutter another yelp. I snarled and stepped back looking into her dumfounded and fearful eyes.
“Maybe this time you’ll heed my warnings,” I growled and turned away from her to face her just as surprised comrades. I head her struggle to her paws behind me but only to crawl away.
“Arson is going to be pissed,” grumbled one of the males, “he’s gonna think the girl did it”
I was about to question the male before the female I just fought began to speak
“Who are you,” the beaten female whimpered.
I turned towards her confused at the question. “Just some loner, you said it yourself,” I
Snorted and turned back away from her. The males that traveled with her stayed back from me and I looked around at them. I hung my head and walked away upset. I knew that the friends I once had and the bonds with other wolves, I would never have again. All I would meet in these meek woods would be enemies, more wolves trying to pick fights and kill.
I sighed and turned my head back at the pack that ambushed me which was now gone then returned to my walk to no specific place. As I walked I looked around the large trees and the overgrown foliage that sprouted from the rough soil. I finally gave in and crumpled under my own weight and laid down on the uncomfortable ground.
“What the hell am I supposed to do now,” I said, thinking out loud. I knew I couldn’t go back to that camp where they pitched wolf after wolf to try and kill me in battle, forcing me to take them out first. However, I had made a few good friends with my same views that thought of running with me but couldn’t leave their families. It was easy for me to run I had no one; my mother was killed by the wolf I hate more than any other, my father. I was also an only child so had no sisters or brothers.
I had no choice but to stay here, and something inside me wanted to, but the lack of good company made me not want to. I got composure of myself and tried to get back up but my body had no desire to. Lack of food finally caught up to me and I was obviously drained because of it. Still laying I sniffed the air for prey or something to eat but regrettably found something else. It was a male and a smaller female. I got to my feet quickly and tried to get to hiding jumping into an overgrowth of shrubs. I did not want to have to fight again so only hoped they would trail away or be too distracted to sense me. Neither of those options happened, I heard them approaching and ducked lower into my hiding place.
“Kay you’re so dumb,” the female said laughing.
Kay, according to what the female said, was still laughing, “Well it’s true isn’t it?”
The female’s laughter suddenly stopped and I cringed as I saw her sniff the air. She started to growl a bit and head right towards the shrubs I hid in.
“Leva! What are you doing?” Kay shouted.
“There’s a wolf in there” Leva growled, towards me.
I gulped and was about to run away as fast as I could.
“Is it one of Arson’s hunters?” Kay muttered.
I remembered the males that talked about some wolf named Arson which caught my attention stopping my urge to run. I stepped close to try and hear them better but didn’t realize how close to the exit of my hiding place I was. I looked up and saw both the wolves I spotted growling at me. I gave a stupid and exaggerated smirk. “Uh, hi,” I muttered
“Hello,” said Leva with a false kindness and smile. Immediately after she had me on my back pinned under both of her paws. I didn’t know how she did it and even more how she kept me held. I struggled and fought to get free from her but couldn’t and the male had already begun sniffing me. He came up with a questionable and confused look.
“This guy’s not Arson’s but I can’t tell you whose he is,” Kay said.
“I’m Pivot, I’m not anyone’s,” I said still struggling under Leva’s paws. Both Kay and Leva looked at each other moderately unconvinced. They turned to me and Leva carefully took her paws off me, and I stumbled to my feet and exchanged glances with them. I saw their claws dug in the earth showing they were ready for attack. I had no intentions to attack either of them but I was tempted to bolt away. However, my curiosity for this Arson character continued to nag at me. “So, I guess I should thank you to start with,” I said gulping, “like I said I am Pivot, if you don’t mind me asking your names?” Of course I already know their answers but they didn’t know that.
Both of them nodded and Leva answered first, “I’m Leva and this is Kay, and if you don’t mind we shouldn’t be sticking around, so we’ll be off now.”
I stepped in the direction she was headed and she stepped back a bit and growled. “So your Kay and Leva, those hunter’s sure seemed pretty focused on finding you,” this made her growl even louder, “and after what I did I’m sure they are sending more out, and I’ve made an addition to that list.”
Kay growled very loudly and stepped right in my face, “What the hell are you talking about”
I was unfazed by his threat and snapped at him, “Listen bud I’m not trying to get on your bad side. Now. If you want to know what I’ve done follow me,” I glared at Kay and he glared back as I turned to head in the direction of the hunter wolves I ran into earlier. I could only sent the beaten females blood which was probably still scattered on the ground as I headed towards the small clearing of trees. Kay and Leva trotted flank to flank not far behind me as I walked into the clearing. I gagged a bit and noticed the female torn apart by other wolves. I turned and faced Kay and Leva with a startled look; they look just as sickened as I did.
“We need to get out of here I whispered quietly and gestured for the two to turn around.
Just as they did we became surrounded. The same guards I fought with not long ago plus other hunter wolves began to walk a circle around us.
Leva barked and growled, “What is this Pivot!”
I was growling as well, “Looks like the friends of that female I killed.”
Kay mumbled under his breathe but I could hear him, “what the hell,” he turned to me now speaking clearly, “you did that!”
Before I could answer one of the males surrounding us laughed, “No, we did!”
I growled loudly, “her injuries were no where near fatal why would you do something this horrible.”
The male smiled and continued, “of course they weren’t. We needed someway to get you back; we thought her blood would tug at your hunger.”
I growled again, “That does not even make sense.”
“Well you’re back aren’t you now. And now that you are…” he looked around at the other wolves surrounding us, “Attack them all”
All the wolves jumped in at once, I counted ten. I heard the yelps and whines of Kay and Leva, and felt the bite and claws of the wolves that attacked me. I snarled loudly and shook them off. I went first for the wolves that attacked Leva. I sunk my fangs into their heads and clawed at their eyes. The other wolves were still attacking me still clawing at my back and head. I continued to help Leva grabbing her scruff and throwing her into shrubs. After that the wolves on my back pinned me down. I struggled under them trying to throw them off but there was to many of them on me.
Just as I was about to stop struggling and lay there I felt the weight of the wolves sweep of my back. I looked up and saw Kay tearing brutishly at them. He was knocking away their attacks moving quicker than I had seen any wolf move in a while. I was almost afraid to jump in and help but I did anyway. It was not long than the bodies of our attackers struggled on the ground. Only then did I notice Leva. She was chocking on her blood, a hole torn in her throat. I then turned and looked at Kay who was standing over the wolf that called the wolves to attack. He was whimpering under Kay who had blood pouring from his muzzle and teeth. His claws and the fur near them were soaked as well.
“Oh man, don’t, common man, I’m sorry,” begged the wolf under Kay in mercy. Kay said nothing ripped a hole in his neck still growling furiously. I stepped away from Kay whose expression changed from complete anger to sadness as he ran over to Leva.
“Leva!” Kay shouted now in tears. He put his paw over the hole in her neck trying to stop the blood but it was useless.
“K-Kay,” Leva struggled to speak.
“What is it?” he whimpered.
“Am I going to die,” she muttered.
I stepped back, her question jerked at me.
Kay shook his head and lied, “N-n-no Leva, were still gonna make it to the Leva smiled back up at him and licked his muzzle, “I love you, Kay,” she said making one final choke.
“I love you, too, Leva.” Kay cried now, and he licked her back. I bowed my head down and turned away.
The time passed slowly that night and Kay didn’t stop crying for a second of it. Occasionally he wretched, from the lack of breathe mixed with the sight of Leva dead in his paws. I let him, not being bothered by it at all, he needed to do it. I had gotten rid of the bodies that Kay torn apart in revenge saving meat from them for him to eat when he could.
Instead he lay there driven so far into depression and rage I was worried he would snap. Behind his tears his eyes stared cold and hardened. His face was strait and unchanging. It was when I noticed all this that he stood up still looking forward. He stepped over Leva and began to dig a hole next to her. I slowly stood up and approached making a large circle around Kay so he could see it was me coming. I looked at him and began to help throw the dirt from the hole he started. He never looked back but I saw his eyes, the tears had stopped but they remained cold and lifeless. I turned away from him and saw Leva’s body laying there, her eyes still open. Her eyes matched Kay’s pale, cold, hard, and lifeless.
Kay started to mumble something but I couldn’t hear him. He seemed to be talking to himself so I didn’t question what he was saying. Slowly the mumbles got louder and I realized he wasn’t talking he was singing to himself. Not a howl but an actual song.
Just look at yourself, can you see where you are? Look at yourself, now you can't hide he scars. Just look at yourself 'cause there's nowhere to go. And you know…. He sang it quietly but I could understand it, and I felt the sadness in it. I fell to the ground in the dirt we dug up and chocked on a lump in my throat trying to hold back tears. I had no idea why it was happening or how, but his song gave me sadness. I spoke up carefully, “What are you doing, Kay”
“What the hell does it look like,” he looked up at me angrily.
I stepped back and he continued to speak, “I’m digging a grave.”
I shook my head and stepped forward, “No, not that, the song.”
“Well you said it yourself Pivot. I’m singing a song. Is that too confusing for you to understand or something.”
I was tempted to snap at the comment but I resisted and just shook my head. “Well than can I go back to digging?” he snarled. I nodded and walked back behind him and laid down watching him.
He finished the hole after several more hours but would not put Leva in it. I stood back up and approached him again. “If you’re going to put her to rest you need to do it now,” I said.
He turned and looked at me and nodded, sadness in his eyes again. I helped him lower her down into the hole and cover the body. The process only took about an hour with my help and when we finished he walked slowly to the meat I saved for him and ate. I watched him eat as I smoothed the dirt we buried Leva under.
He ate very slowly, thoroughly chewing his food. His eyes were still hard and lifeless staring off into the sky. I approached his slowly and laid down in front of him. “I should tell you I’m sorry, I feel like this is all my fault.”
Kay turned his attention to me a shook his head, “Don’t worry Pivot, it’s not. It’s mine. I shouldn’t have run away from Arson in the first place. If I didn’t none of this would be happening.”
I looked down and huffed. “Don’t blame yourself Kay; it will only make things worse for yourself. And who is Arson anyway?”
He turned away and explained, “Arson was our packs higher. He was newly into power in our pack and nobody but his posse wanted him there. He was a horrible leader, forcing mating, fighting, pups training, and killed those who disagreed with him. He also killed off any who got injured to remove weakness, not matter how old or young. Well my parents were in a rebellion to take him down. So, my parents along with the parents of other wolves attacked at a rally, for us “New Fighters”, trying to assassinate him. Well, what they didn’t plan on was the fact that their children were taken from birth so didn’t recognize their parents. Thus, Arson pitched the “New Fighters” against their parents who refused to fight back. It was a massacre, and I ended up killing my father who was one of the few who stayed alive through the fight. I was lost and had no idea of what to do. Well, I did the childish thing and ran away from my fears.”
I interrupted, “Don’t worry, I’ve ran too, but for a different reason, I’ll tell you when your done with your story”
Kay nodded and continued, “Then after I ran, I guess Leva followed me, but I thought it was someone else at first so just kept running as fast as I could. I don’t remember exactly how, but I ended up knocked out and woke up under a tree’s roots Leva standing over me. She told me not to speak and led me to a strange marked tree den where her father was. There he told me about something called the Pease Lands. And, that’s how it got to this, we were in search of them, but there’s no point now, she’s gone.”
I looked at him for a while and he looked back at me, “Kay, you may have lost Leva, but you can’t just stop here, what will you even do?”
Kay snapped at me, “What the hell does it matter! She’s gone Pivot! Gone! Forever!” he turned away and tears began to swell up in his hard eyes.
I snapped back “Yes! She is! But that doesn’t mean you quit! You’ll be with her again when you pass on! For now you need to live your life!”
Kay didn’t reply he only crumpled into sobs again. I nuzzled him as a friend and he pushed his nose deep into my fur. I sighed; he was a bit younger than I was but not much. I just sat there as I felt his tears wet my pelt. I said nothing, for I had no Idea what to say, I just sat and waited.
When he finally got himself back together he looked at me a nodded, “I know, and you’re right, I just, don’t know if I can, just go on Pivot. I’m not to good at being alone.”
I shook my head and gave a small grin, “Oh no, you won’t be alone Kay.”
He stepped back and looked at me a bit confused, then it seemed like he understood. “S..so you’re gonna come along?” I nodded and he gave a slight smile back and a thank you nod.
“Oh, and by the way you never told me,” Kay said. I found the statement very random but shrugged and sat down.
“You sure you want to hear my story?” I asked him. He smiled and nodded.
“You sat through mine didn’t you?”
I nodded and smiled back and began my story. “Well, where to start? I guess I should begin with my parents really. Man, I feel like I’m telling my life story. But, anyway, my mom was a kind wolf, putting others before herself, everything good you can find in a wolf. Which is why I have no idea how she ended up with my father. He was an asshole, a killer, and would step on anyone to get to the top. And he did just that and ended up top general just under our pack’s Higher. Well, because he was supposedly such a “great wolf” they told him he would breed with his mate until she had a son, and if she didn’t she’d be killed. Well lucky enough for her, I was born. And, right when I was, I was taken from her. When I was just able to walk they put me in a advanced fight camp. I was constantly beaten bloody, and my father always told me ‘If you want to live, you must fight to survive, don’t come crying to me’. Well I did just that, trained as hard as my youthful heart would let me, finding weaknesses in my opponents, finding strengths in myself, whatever I could learn to defend myself.
Well it wasn’t long till I was at the top of the class, at about the age of a year. Because of my young age the Higher didn’t believe I could actually of been top of class. So he told me to fight all the wolves in the class to death to see if it was true. Of course, I refused which is when he had my mother brought to him. He threatened her death if I didn’t so I had no choice. I fought the other wolves and well, I’m standing here with you aren’t I?
SO apparently all this entertained our Higher so he made it a weekly event, he offered luxury to any wolf who thought they could kill me. And with the dying of the world around us, there was many wolves who took up that offer. If I didn’t fight my mother was killed so I had too. I killed wolf after wolf for that Higher’s entertainment. Well I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I ran, and it’s all a bit of a blur of how I met up with you exactly but here I am”
Kay sat there his mouth open a bit, “That’s horrible, I don’t know what to say.”
“Don’t say anything, you don’t have too,” I said. I let out a long yawn and stretched my body out then laid down on the grass we sat on
“We shouldn’t sleep right now, in fact, we’d better head off now, I’m sure the lack of return of those Hunter wolves will only make em’ more pissed.” I nodded in agreement and followed Kay as he exploded in speed through the forest. He immediately pulled away from me, far away from me. I skid to a stop and sat slumped my mouth opened wide. He was fast, very fast.
It hadn’t taken him long to realize my absence sending him back to me seeing me dumbfounded. He looked kind of confused at my expression and tilted his head, “What?”
“F..F..Fast…You’re fast,” I muttered
“Oh, ya sorry, I forgot about that sorry” he gave a stupid grin and turned back around. “I’ll try to slow up”
I huffed and nodded and we ran off again through the forest weaving between the large trees. I smiled as I looked over at Kay, I wasn’t alone anymore, and I have a friend, and a place to go. All these things that I didn’t have this morning when I ran. The wind buzzed through my pelt making me feel even better, and at this moment I was finally happy with where I was.
I awoke to see the forest dark around me, I never did remember going to sleep, or much of anything during the run. I stood up slowly and adjusted my eyes to the darkness so I could see. I didn’t see Kay anywhere, nor did I scent him. I looked around frantically but still saw nothing so I began to whisper loudly, “Kay, where are you? Common Kay where did you go?”
Only the howls of wind through the trees answered me and I began to get even more nervous. I started to circle the area looking in the shrubs and in the tree’s in case he made a nest else where but couldn’t find a sign of him. I started to get scared and just ran blindly on a small path I sighted. I kept my head low and ran as fast as I could unable to see more than ten feet in front of me.
Then out of know where I went barreling into someone’s flank making them yip loudly along with myself. I stood up slowly and growled a bit, “Kay you idiot, don’t run off like that” I shook my pelt and huffed.
A voice replied, but it wasn’t Kay’s it was a younger female, “Who the heck is Kay”
I gulped and shuffled back against a tree and when I did Kay stepped around it, “Who yipped?” he asked. I then gestured my head towards the female standing in front of the two of us.
Kay turned and looked at me then the female curiously, “Who’s she?”……
