Jenna’s Bandana

A short, but cute story!

I remember that day when I saw that little, cute, and red husky that passed by me. She seemed like the only thing made by angels, and my heart thumped as she walked by. I was only a puppy then, but I still loved her from the very start. It looked like a path of light from the clouds was dangling over her, and she seemed to be that I was only paying attention to her, and not my usual surroundings. So I tripped over a snow bank, of course head first. The red husky looked my way and giggled, for I did a foolish thing. I was embarrassed, but I didn’t show it, well maybe a little. She walked over to me and asked, “Do you need help?” in such an angelic voice. My heart skipped, and my mind was in a different world. Did she just talk to me? I thought as she stood there, looking to see if I would give an answer. “Yeah, I’m alright.” I said as I got to my rather large paws. My fur on the top of my head was a chaos, and the pure bred husky started to grin. “What’s your name?” she said again in an angelic voice. I started to think the name of what the humans were calling me when they treated me poorly; what was it again? Then, the name popped in my mind, and I replied, “Balto. That’s what the two legged things call me.” She nodded her head and smiled. “I like that name, Balto. My name is Jenna.” She pronounced her name perfectly, unlike how I stuttered at my name, for that I’m still nervous. “Jenna.” I said as I mumbled under my breath, for it seemed like a gift to me. “Your name sounds pretty.” I replied, looking into her eyes. You could tell that when looking in them, she was nervous too, but she didn’t show it in her face. “Well, I have to go now. See you later Balto!” said Jenna as she dashed toward her five year old owner, and I smiled as she left. But then, other thoughts were running through my mind. See you later? Did she say “See you later?” And my heart skipped a few times and thumped again with a fast pace.

I walked up and down the streets of Nome, and not many people were crowding the place. I passed the butcher’s store, but when after I passed the meat shop, I saw a clothing store. Right in front of the window was some what a scarlet bandana, and right then I started to get ideas. I knew this would be the perfect gift, the gift for the one I deeply love. It would look beautiful on Jenna, just seeing her red fur make the orange noticeable and cute on her. The bandana looked rather dashing, for now these days this was the popular wear for pups and dogs of all ages. Jenna didn’t have a bandana, but how would I get it? Save money even though I’m a dog? Impossible it would be. So I paced for awhile in front of the shop, until I heard grim footsteps behind me. In a childish, foolish voice, Steele went right up to me and said, “What’re you doing mutt? Nothing? Well that’s too bad.” Nikki, Kaltag, and Star were smirking with laughs on their faces. I didn’t find anything funny, but what ever Steele does, EVERYONE has to do what he does. He was only a couple weeks older then me, but that doesn’t make him any smarter. “Leave me alone Steele.” I said as my ears pulled back, and my tail started to swoosh slowly and low behind my legs. “What ever. I saw you looking at that bandana. What thoughts do you have in mind, mutt.” I shut my eyes for awhile, should I tell him my plan? I don’t think so, because that would have created chaos between us two, wanting to fight over the one we love. “I was thinking that my grandma would look good in it.” I murmured to him. Was Steele going to buy that lie or not, but then I saw him pathetically laughing with his posse. “Your grandma? Are you kidding me? She is probably half better looking then you! Your wolf grandma or your husky grandma?” I stared into his blue, magnetic eyes, and then muttered another lie. “My husky grandma.” Steele gave me a look. “You don’t even KNOW your husky grandma. If you did, you would be living with her now, but lately you have been living ‘vith’ that Russian snow goose.” Darn, I was cornered. Steele was catching on that I was lying, so I replied, “Okay. It’s for that Russian snow goose.” Then the posse laughed again, but even more pathetically. “He’s not a dog, you know, right?” Steele said as he swooshed his tailed against my face, which I gave a little sneeze. “Well, good luck with what ever you’re doing mutt. See you later.” And Steele, Nikki, Kaltag, and Star trotted off somewhere else on the east side of town. I looked down at my paws. How was I really supposed to get that bandana? I stilled paced for a while, but it was getting late. So I walked back to the boat and try not to give Boris a heart attack for that I was gone for a long time. Maybe tomorrow I can get that bandana. I just hope so.

I walked to town again that early morning, with the sun shining over my shaggy shoulder. You might have called it a ‘miracle’ that morning. As I was walking down toward the clothing store with the bandana hanging in the front window, I couldn’t believe my eyes! The store was giving out free clothing, and people from the town were walking toward the store to choose something decent out for their poor families. In boxes that the clothes were in, I saw a bandana right on top of the pile. Without anyone noticing, I carefully trotted toward the box. Right from then, I grabbed it carefully into my mouth, and now I was on a search for Jenna. I crept slowly into the dark, hidden allies behind the houses, so that I wouldn’t look suspicious to the humans. Then, I looked all over town for that red, cute husky. It took me about an hour to find her, but then I noticed her sleeping on her front, tidy porch. So I walked down her quiet block, and then I walked up the porch’s steps. “Psss, Jenna. It’s me Balto!” I said in a low voice, so then I wouldn’t disturb anyone or let the owner know that I was here. Her eyes fluttered softly on her face, and she lifted her head up from her paws. “Balto, why good morning. I see you have…” Her face was struck with excitement, and a smile was starting to form on the sides of her mouth. Her eyes shown brightly, and her tail wagged in the air. “For you. I thought it would look cute on you, so I got this as a gift.” I dropped the scarlet bandana from my mouth over on the top of her head. It slid down her face and neck, and it fitted perfectly. “Thank you Balto! It’s a fantastic gift! You’re a good friend.” And then she kind of tripped from the excitement, and our noses touched. I would never forget the word and feeling how she called me a good friend. Jenna seemed a bit embarrassed when she tripped, but I just grinned with a giggle, like the time she done when I had tripped into the snow bank that day when I first met her.
