Friendship of the Wolf

By Aljan Darkmoon 2008

We are one in mind and spirit

Brothers and sister we are

No matter the age and no matter the rank

We are one to the last

Fang and tooth and claw may flash from time to time

But it never breaks the bond we share

Though half-grown, we still play like pups

Swan, leap, wrestle, and laugh

Despite the bruises we sometimes receive

We still love each other

When one passes on, we weep for them

Our tears fall to the earth like rain from the sky

But we know the late friends are in a place of serenity and happiness

As we grow older, our senses lessen

Our eyes grow dim and our hearing deaf

Despite our loss, we still help each other through the darkness of our age

I am the only one now, my friends have passed on long ago

My eyes are white now and my hearing is gone completely

But I can still walk

Though now deaf as a snail, I can hear voices

Voices of those who I once played with many years ago

It is my friends, I realize, they are calling to me

I slowly get to my feet and follow their voices

As I walk, my strength returns

The blood within me rushes through my body

I am running now, my sight and senses coming back to me faster then lightning

The gray fur has disappeared and been replaced by the pelt of my youth

I see my friends now, standing in a field of grass, wrestling with each other

One of them spots me and runs towards me soon followed by the others

We collide and begin to wrestle, kiss, and laugh as we are reunited once again

At night we raise our voices to the green-blue orb that hangs in the sky
