~Kar and Merra got older and their love grew stonger.  Until that one night..............~

"Merra,"  Kar whispered.  The two wolves were on the hill once again, looking at the fireflies in the sky.  They had decided to call their hill, the Midnight Hill.  It was there where they continued to meet.

"Yes Kar?"

"My father is dying."

"Oh Kar!"  Merra licked her mates ear.  "I'm so sorry!"  Merra had never met any of Kar's pack members.  Their love was forbidden due to the fact Kar was to become alpha.

"It's alright Merra."  Kar said back.  "I am sad, but it is his time.  Anyway, i will become alpha of my pack soon.  And i was thinking, i will need an alpha female."

"Yes?"

"Merra, if you were to join my pack after i become alpha, i would be the happiest being in this earth."  Kar said, smiling,  Merra got up and looked up at the sky.  Kar soon followed.

"I don't know Kar."  She said.

"But Merra, this is what we've planned!  This is our dream!  We can be together!"  Kar said.  "Please!  Your a loner, i know you're probably used to being on your own, but this.....you won't regret your desision if you decide to!"

"Kar, do you love me?"  Merra turned to him.  "I mean, really love me?"

"Of course."

"Then yes.  I will be with you."

Kar yelped with joy and the two wolves jumped around like kits, laughing and smiling.  Unaware to either of them, a danger was nearby,  One of the pack's members, Fang, had been sent to find Kar.  Shadow, Kar's father, was asking to see his son and Tike knew Kar was most likely on the hill.  He now sat in the bushes and watched Kar dance with Merra. 

Fang had always been jealous of the fact that Kar was to become alpha.  Even worse, Kar didn't really WANT to become alpha!  Fang growled silently as he would give anything to be in Kar's position.

"I can see it now!"  Fang whispered.

"Leader!  Shadow!  Kar is defying your orders and running off with a loner!"

"What?"  Shadow cried.  "How dare he!"

"And i caught them both on the hill!"  Fang said.

"Fang, your bravery and your loyality to this pack is now proven."  Shadow said.  "Even though i'm not dead yet, i pass my alpha status to you.  Fang the alpha!  I should have always choosen you over my big, stupid, ugly, fle-bitten son Kar!"

"Oh Fang!"  Midnight cried, running up to him.  "Oh Fang, your brillant!"

"I know Midnight!"  Fang laughed at the look in Kar's face as his status was stripped away from him.

"As my first duty of alpha, Kar, i demand you leave!  Your a traitor to the pack!"  Fang roared.

"All hail Alpha Fang!"  Midnight's mother Lupe said and ran at Kar.

"Yes!  All hail the alpha!"  Lupus followed.

"Perfect!"  Fang whispered.  "This is my chance!"  Fang slowly slipped away and ran all the way to the den site.

"Leader!  Shadow!"  He called out.  

"Fang, did you bring me my son?"  Shadow asked.  Though he was old and sick, Shadow still gave off an air of leadership.  He could still fight and hunt, though he tired quickly.

"No, but i saw something leader!"  Fang went on, then stopped.  He suddenly had an idea.

"Well spit it out!"  Shadow snapped.

"I uh, saw Kar on the hill.  He was alone, but he said he would come soon."  Fang said, then bowed and left the leaders den.  He saw his mate, Midnight sitting next to Nico and Lupe, her and Fang's mothers.

"Hello Fang."  Midnight called as he walked over. 

"Midnight, i must talk to you!"  Fang said. 

"Not even a hello for your mother!"  Nico yawned.  "The rumors arn't true.  Life does not get easier as an elder wolf."  Fang rolled his eyes.

"Hello mother."  He said as Midnight got up.  The two wolves left the den site and walked toward the hill.

"Fang, where are we going?"  Midnight asked.

"It's Kar!  I saw him with a loner she-wolf!"  Fang said.  Midnight gasped and laughed.

"Oh that's perfect!"  she said.  "Finally, a chance to get that freak out of the pack!  I've always hated him!  He's just to different talking to bugs and not even accepting his destiny!"

"Midnight, you have to listen to me!"  Fang continued.  "I want you and me to run out of the bushes and tell Kar that if he doesn't surrender his future alpha status to me, i'll reveal his secret!  Then Shadow will have him banned from the pack!"

"Will Shadow send his own son into Exile though?"   Midnight asked.

"He has to!  It's part of the law of the wolf packs!"  Fang said.  Midnight cackled with glee and ran ahead of Fang, using her nose to scent where Kar and Merra were once again, laying down together.  Fang suddenly jumped up, yelling in pain.

"A rabbit just bit me!"  He shouted angerily.  The rabbit had run across their path, bit Fang, and continued running.  Fang lept forward, grabbed the rabbit in his teeth and killed it.  A mixture of blood and white foam came out of it's mouth.  Rabies.

By that time, Kar and Merra were turned around as Fang stood in the clearing.

"Well, well, well."  Fang said loudly.  A look of horror passed through Kar's eyes.

"Looks like we stumbled upon a private moment."  Midnight followed Fang.  "Oopsie daisy."

"Fang!  Midnight!"  Kar growled as Merra backed away.  "What are you two doing here?"

"Well, we were out for a midnight stroll when we scented a loner and followed the scent."  Midnight walked up to Merra and began to circle her.  "It wasn't hard.  Everybody knows what a loner smells like."

"Get away from her!"  Kar snarled.  His eyes were seething with anger and fear.

"You know Midnight, i believe there is something in the rules about wolves loving loners.  Mostly for an alpha.  Wait, Kar IS an alpha!  Or should i say was...."  Fang laughed.  

"What do you want?"  Kar growled.

"Your status."  Fang growled back.  Midnight continued to circle Merra, trapping her.

"What?"

"You don't deserve to be alpha!  If it were up to you, we would all be running around staring at stupid flying bugs all day!" 

"Fang, your jealous of me?"  Kar started to laugh.  Fang snarled.

"Shut up!  I have the upper hand here!  I could tell Shadow your breaking the law!"

"Tell him."

"What did you just say?"  Fang gasped.  Midnight stopped circling and all eyes were on Kar.

"I said tell him.  If my father really cared, he would want me to be happy.  And i am happy with Merra."  Kar looked at his mate.  "I love her."

"Fang?"  Midnight backed away.  "Fang, he's not supposed to say that!"

"Then there's only one other way to be alpha!"  Fang growled, crouching down.  With a growl he lept at Kar.  Merra screamed and ran to help, but Midnight stopped her.

"What are you doing?  Fang!  Stop this!"  Midnight screamed at her mate.  Fang ignored her.

"Let me pass!  I must help Kar!"  Merra growled.

"No!  I won't let you hurt Fang!"  Midnight said.  The two she-wolves growled at each other.  Fang and Kar were locked together in claws as blood and fur flew everywhere.  Midnight Hill was soon covered in blood.

"Fang!"

"KAR!"  Another voice called out.  To everyone's surprise, Nico, the omega of the pack ran forward and wrenched Fang off of Kar.

"Nico!"  Kar gasped.  "What are you doing here?"

"I saw Fang and Midnight leave and i figured they were up to no good.  Looks like i was right!"  The omega snarled as Fang got to his feet.

"Fang, please stop this!"  Midnight rushed forward to help her mate.  To everyone's horror, Fang grabbed Midnight and flung her against a nearby rock.  Midnight screamed then went silent as her head collided with the rock.  Merra rushed forward to help.

"Fang, what's gotten into you?"  Kar took a step back.

"I'm going to be a leader!"  Fang snarled.  "And no one will stop me!  Not even Midnight!  You can call me insane or evil!  Maybe i am!  All i know is that you will die tonight Kar!  And Shadow will thank me!"

"Thank you?"  Nico asked.

"Yes!  He shall know of how the omega and the loner teamed up against us.  They knocked Midnight out and killed Kar, but i escaped and managed to kill both of them!"  Fang laughed.  "I will be remembered!"

"Fang,"  Kar took a step forward.  Fang screamed in rage and ran toward Kar.  To their horror, they saw a white foam begin to form around Fang's mouth.

"RABIES!"  Merra shouted.  "He shouted that a rabbit bit him!  It gave him rabies!  He's gone mad!"

"Don't let him bite you!"  Kar shouted.  Fang was still running for him.  Nico was suddenly inbetween the two wolves.

"NICO!"  Kar shouted in horror.  Fang grabbed Nico by the back, ready to throw the poor wolf.  Nico through his head back and clamped his teeth around Fang's throat.  Fang lifted his head as Nico bit down on his neck.  Blood gushed between Nico's teeth as he closed them.

Fang screamed and let go of the omega.  Soon, he was on the ground, writhing and screaming as blood and foam surged from his mouth.  Then he was still.  Nico stumbled over to Kar.  Merra suddenly jumped up.

"Nico, you've been bitten."  She gasped.

"My friend,"  Kar felt tears coming to his eyes.  Nico had been his only friend in the pack.  "Why?"

"Because when your friends, you do crazy stuff."  Nico laughed weakly.  "Kar, you know what you have to do."

"I can't!"  Kar took a step back.  "I won't!"

"Kar, you must!  I can't ask Merra to do it.  If i am to die, i would rather by your teeth than anyone else's.  Protect the pack!"  Nico said.  

"Nico,"

"Please!  I can feel it!"  Nico shook his head.  His eyes began to get cold.  "Kar, before i lose myself!  Do it now!"  Kar couldn't move as his friend shook his head, white foam forming around his mouth. 

"Kar,"  Nico said and suddenly he lept at Merra, eyes insane and teeth ready. 

Then, in an instant, he was down, beneth Kar's teeth.

"I'm sorry my friend."  Kar whispered and he killed Nico. 

Kar lifted his head and howled a clear note of sorrow over the land.  It echoed through the forest and around the mountains.  Merra joined in.

"Oh Kar,"  She whispered.  "I'm so sorry." 

"Don't be."  Kar shook his head, turning away from Nico's body.  "How's Midnight?  Fang bit her when he threw her against the rock."

"His teeth didn't penatrate the skin.  She didn't die of rabies."  Merra said.

"Didn't die?  That makes it sound like she's dead." 

"She is."

"WHAT?  HOW!"  Kar gasped.

"She lost the will to live.  She must have loved Fang very much and when he threw her, she hit her head and just............died of a broken heart."  Merra bowed her head.  Kar heard wolves in the distance.  His pack had heard his howl and was running toward him.  Merra got up to leave.

"No."  Kar said.  "Don't leave.  This secret killed three of my pack members.  I will not keep it any longer."  Merra bowed and sat down as Kar's pack ran into view.

~Time passed.  Merra was accepted into the pack by Tike, after convincing Shadow.  Kar became alpha after Shadow became to old to do so.  Kar and Merra had three puppies together.  Nike and Lupe were devastated at the loss of both their pups, but managed to survive to tell stories to Kar and Merra's pups.  Fang, Midnight, and Nico's bodies were all buried on Midnight Hill.  Now, the fireflies that Kar and Merra both still love, watch over them.~
