The wind blew through the dark night cutting it like a knife going through a cardbord box, the wind hurt anyone's face who was dumb enough to be out. It was one of the coldest nights in Alska since the serum run incident. A wolf dog who's fur was a brownish grey color was walking in the weather trying to visit his mate jenna. Jenna had been the sole reason why balto even daired to go out and do what he did and he hadn't had the oportunity to thank her yet. He huffed as he kept his balance from going on the slippery eyes. " Almost their. I can do this." His voice was horse from the weather and he was getting old. " I'm not as young as I was back then. I can feel it in my bones as they crack like a piece of iceberg falling off it's edge." "Balto? Is that you? What are you doing out in this weather it's to dangerous and not good for you're health." His ears picked up and he straightened his back he knew exactly who that was. " Jenna?" He asked in a daze as collapsed into the snow the crunching noise almost echoeing as he hit.

Balto had awoke a few hours into the early morning and was greated by the fire place in jenna's house hold. He yawned and tried to stretch, but he held back a hiss at the sudden straign in his legs. " Oh balto... why would you think about going out in such weather?" Jenna had asked. Apparently jenna had been on the couch the entire night looking after balto and waiting for him to wake up. " I had wanted to talk to you about something." " Couldn't it have waited until this morning? When the weather is cleared." " No." Balto said in a low tone as he got on the couch next to her and continued to stare at the fire for a few minutes. " So, what was it you needed to talk to me about." Jenna had asked finally break the silence. " I never got a chance to thank you." " Thank me?" " Yes for everything you have done." " Balto what are you getting at?" She was worried and balto knew she wasn't stupid she had figured it out in his tone that something was wrong. " I wanted to thank you for coming back for me during the serum run and proving to everyone that I was still alive and well, for all those times you believed in me when it came to our kids. Just, I wanted to say thank you for doing what you did. I don't think I would- no, I would have made it, but I don't think it would have felt as fulling as having someone cheer me on and knowing taht something good was going to happen in the end of a long war." Jenna titled her head.

A few more hours had passed and balto had re awoken. Jenna knew something was wrong just by how sleepy he was getting in the past few days and hours. " Balto?" "mhhh" " A few hours ago... when you said inner war what did you mean by that?" " Oh. right, it meant a lot of things. When I was younger i had always wondered who my parents are and why they left me to suffer through years of discrimination that I had recieved from every one in town. I always wondered the dirty streets and even going into the woods trying to look for food and shelter to stay in, but I was always turned away because of what I was." He paused trying to figure out how to explain. " I had been found by boris and he took me to the ship, he had taken care of me and showed me compassion. Something no one has ever shown me before and I was grateful to him. As I grew older and stared into the small town from a distance I had vowed to show them that I was special one day. I had then met steele and his gang getting caught watching the sled dog race and got roughed up by him a bit, i had walked around avoding people and then I had saw you in the distance looking happy and for some reason that had made me happy." Jenna put her face on her paws and smiled. " Rosie had made me feel happy to when she put the reigns of her sled on, but it wasn't the same kind of happy ness that I felt when I saw you smile, the time the sled dog team had gone missing and I saw you looking through the hospital window at rosie I knew then and their that I had to do something to make you smile agina, I had gone out looking for steele and slipped on some ice and I had found them on a ledge with the medicine case partly broke." He had huffed out some breath before continuing. " Steel had been reluctent in giving me the sled to let me lead them home and something had and the next thing I knew the medicine box was falling and I went to grab and I tumble down hitting the ledges on the cliff i hit my back against a rock and had passed out. I managed to get out of the snow after coming to my senses and in the distance I had saw what I had thought was a monster something I was always afraid of being, but after fitting my paw in the white wolves something had came over my and my hope had been rekindled like the northern lights bursting through the stars. I grabbed the medicince and climbed back up." Balto had looked tired again. " Balto go back to bed and we can continue this when you wake up." Balto nodded and dozed off again.

In was late in the evening when he had woken up again. ' I've got to finish it I don't have much time left.' He thought. " Are you well enough to continue?" Jenna had been sleeping next to him. He had nodded." After that I had found my way back to the top and I had led the sled team through an ice cave when the ice from the top started to crumble I pushed my paws against the crate to make sure it wouldn't break and rushed out. Steele had covered up my paw marks I had left on the tree, but some how after all of that I had finally made it back and then you were their smiling." As he thought back to her smile he had smiled at the memory in return. Jenna didn't know how to respond to any of this. " Balto..." " I also want to tell you something that I think you figured out... I'm dying." He didn't mean to sound to so blunt about it but it had just come out. " I know..." Jenna had said looking back to the fire. The silence was over powering until jenna had heard balto coughing a little bit and she had looked back at him with concern on her face. Jenna had moved closer to him and nuzzled into the side of his face. ' I don't know if I'm ready to loose you just yet balto.' Jenna had thought to her self as she watched her husband get weaker as the time went on. “ Jenna?” “ Yes?” “Do you remember that time when you had pups?” “Of course how could I forget that?” She smiled warmly. “ I-I had been scared of being a father when I had found out. I was... contimplanting on running away from all of that, but a dream had told me to stay and so did my hear I was glad I stayed to help you raise them and to get to know my children as they grew older.” He sighed sighing a bit. Jenna didn't know what to say so she turned her head towards the cieling to let this all sink in. “Jenna I love you for as long as my soul wanders this earth I will always find my way back and love you again." He had said his voice tiring.

It had finally happened his eyes in the even of the second day of his visit. Jenna walked throught he doggy door and towards the ship to let muk and luk know of the news that balto had passed. She would have told boris if he hadn't have died a few years early from a hunters gun. Muk and luk and cried at the small gathering, it was really small it was just her, her son, and muk and luk at the funeral since rosie had gone to college to be come a docotor and her owners were as old as they were and didnt' stay very long. It was turning into dusk as jenna was about to leave until she felt the wind grew stronger. She had turned her head and had saw a white wolf with small dantiy eyes and a wise look about her. “ I have watched you and my son for the longest tme..” Jenna looked confused. “ My name is anui and I was balto's mother until my life had ended early during a fight with a neighboring pack. I had sent my son to live hear where I knew he would become something great and he did.” She paused. “ I know what my son had said about the pups had upset you, but he meant know harm by and he says he wish he was a live right now to explain what he had mant. He truly loves you and wishes for the best for you and that you continue to have a good life.” Anui had disappeared just like her husband had. ' Jenna, I love you for as long as my soul wanders this earh I will always find my way back and love you all over again. For an eternity.' She had remembered balto's words as she walked away from his grave. “ I love you to balto.” She had stepped on a rock and looked towards the setting sun and the fog rolling in. “ For an eternity.”
