The End of the Line

2 weeks have passed since the great loving hearts within Jenna and Balto stopped their rhythmic tempo. The town of Nome stood still everyone walked through the streets with a hushed tone. Kodi looks around at the somber sight he notices one man crying near the dry good store while another walks past him crying as well. He thinks “gee this is sad” a tear falls out of his eye and runs down his furry cheek and he turns and walks down the street and disappears from view.

Later that day Kodi made his way to his fathers boat he climbed aboard and looks around. The wind howls through the cracks in the wooden hull, he looked inside the pilot house of the boat and saw his father’s blanket was still there. Kodi walks up to it and sniffs it the smell tingles his nose he can still smell his father on the blanket. Kodi looks around then leaves he looks back at the boat then head back to Nome. He visits his parents graves and thinks “I will see you again but for now I must leave Nome goodbye mom and dad” Kodi turns from them and walks away.

Aleu and her pack have been living happily in the forests of Russia. She stopped in the forest and watched as her pack raced past her and disappear from view she heard the winds whipping through the trees and then nothing but utter silence followed her breath came out in a mist of steam she felt as if something had happened and then she saw a bright light glowing beyond the tree line in front of her. She felt drawn to the light but resisted going towards it she saw a eerie fog begin to surround her she watched as it enveloped her paws. Just then a pain wracked her body she went down on all fours screaming and thought “what the…” her thoughts became fuzzy she felt as if she was in the water and a powerful wave rocking her back en forth. Just then a light burst forth from her chest and she watched as a ghostly figure began to come out of the light then blackness came and she saw no more.

Aleu looks around and thinks “what just happened” she notices a blurry shape coming towards her and she notices the shape start to take a form of a red and cream colored dog she says “mom” but she notices that the dog is not her mother and is fact her brother. She says “Kodi what are you doing here” he replies “mom and dad are gone” she is taken aback by this and says “gone what do you mean gone” he replies “gone as in dead” the words hit her like a brick and she replies quivering “how” he replies back “dad went in his sleep and mom was hit by a car” the thought of Jenna being hit by a car flashed through Aleu’s mind. She replies “how did you get here and where am I” she looks around at the dark forest surrounding her the trees seem bent towards her their branches like arms seeming to reach for her. Aleu looks back at Kodi and says “where am I” Kodi says “just look behind you” Aleu turns and sees herself laying on the ground she jumps back and says “no I cannot be” she runs over to a silvery lake and looks in she sees herself in the water a translucent figure not bound to this world or the next.

She looks back at Kodi except Kodi isn’t standing there anymore it is her father. She says “papa” he nods and says “hi my little girl” she looks at him and says “are you….” He nods without her finishing her sentence and he says “yes Aleu I am dead but don’t worry I am fine I like it here” she says “where are we” he says “in the twilight” she says “twilight” he replies back “in the border of the physical world and the afterlife” she looks around and notices they aren’t in the forest anymore she watches as bright planets move by and she looks below her noticing a blue colored planet with wisps of clouds surrounding it she replies “what is all this” he replies “this is life in it’s simplest form” he says “your time is approaching Aleu and when it does I want you to face it and accept it is apart of life” she watches as her entire life plays out like a movie in front of her then she glimpse things that are not apart of her life like moving cars through a crowded city and a vast green country side extending as far as the I can see a swift sun rise begins to appear.

She looks at her father and says “I want to go back” he nods then there is a flash of light then nothing but darkness, Aleu hears the wind howling and thinks “no I am still in the afterlife” she opens her eyes and see she is back in the familiar forest she starts to feel lightheaded and realizes she isn’t breathing she gasps for air it fills her lungs she exhales. Aleu gets up and feels a little woozy she looks around and says “that was weird” she shakes her head and runs to catch up with her pack.

It has been two days since Kodi has left Nome he mostly has been living off of the animals of the forest he thinks “I wonder where Aleu is” he looks around and says “well I better go get something to eat” he rushes off into the forest and disappears.

Aleu looks around for her pack but cannot find them she notices the smell of the sea wafting through the air, she rushes through the trees and stops in front of the sea and she sticks her paw into the ice water and feels the ocean tide moving between her toes. She looks out over the ocean at the large land mass that is Alaska and she wonders “will I ever see Kodi again” just as she thought that she notices a large ice bridge that has formed she runs over to it and places her left paw on it feeling the cold wet ice beneath her and she says “ok this isn’t a dream” she climbs onto the ice and begins to make her way across the ice towards Alaska.

Kodi notices out of the corner of his eye a shimmering object floating in the water, he runs over to it and sees it is the ice bridge that he had heard his father talking about and he notices a figure walking on the ice. He see that it is a brown wolf and she looks familiar and he finally notices it is Aleu.

Aleu sees her brother standing on shore she jumps off the ice bridge and swims towards him once she reaches shore she jumps on him and says “hey bro” her tail starts to wag. Kodi looks into her eyes and says “whats up sis” she replies “nothing” she lets him up Kodi stands there and says “you know mom and dad are gone” she nods and says “yes I know” he replies stunned “how do you know” she says “long story” they look at one another and walk into the forest.

Later that day Kodi asked Aleu what she had been up to she replies saying she had been living in the wild and having a great time and she asked the same of him and he says it is pretty much the same. Just then Kodi looks around and feels as if something is watching them he says “Aleu there is something out there” she scans the tree line and see a rather bulky dark shape moving through the trees and she replies “what is it” Kodi shrugs. All of a sudden a bear comes tearing through the trees it growls as it’s eyes narrow at the sight of Aleu and Kodi. Kodi looks at the bear and says “Aleu get behind me” she replies “no” he turns around and looks at her and notices anger spark in her eyes and he nods and says heavily “fine” he turns from her and looks at the bear.

The bear paws at the ground and charges at Kodi and Aleu, they both leap out of the way but Aleu gets cut across the chest by one of the bear’s claws Aleu gasps at the pain. The bear turns around and charges again it catches Aleu off guard and bites into her throat.

Aleu feels the bears teeth penetrate her throat, her eyes narrow and she starts to feel weak as her blood starts to drain from her body. Kodi watches in horror as his sister starts to bleed, he charges at the bear but the bear swipes him aside he fly into a tree and is knocked out.

Aleu looks at Kodi and says “K….o…d…I” her mind swirls into darkness and her vision blurs and fades away. All of a sudden she feels free and watches as a bright light appears she looks back at her limp body hanging in the jaws of the bear then at Kodi then she is gone from this world.

Kodi wakes up and he stands up to find his sisters limp body swaying in the jaws of the bear, he charges at the bear the bear tosses Aleu’s lifeless body and charges at him. Kodi manages to bite the bear in the chest drawing blood as he did so. The bear roars in pain Kodi watches as the bear thrashes in pain but then it turns to him it’s eyes bloodshot. Kodi thinks “this is it” he watches as the bear charges at him and he does the same. The bear knocks Kodi off his feet and bites into his chest cracking his ribs and collapsing one of Kodis lungs. Kodi gasps at the pain and feels blood rushing up his throat but he swallows it. He walks towards Aleus body and collapses as he nears it his breathing becomes labored. He drags himself over to Aleu and manages to say “Aleu” he looks at her face now matted with blood. Kodis vision starts to fade and he shakes his head no and thinks “no I will not die” he feels his limbs become numb and he knows he doesn’t have long to live. He hears the bear coming towards him to finish him off, Kodi outstretches one of his paws and places it on Aleus paws and says “I am coming sis” his breathe is cut short his body relaxes and he is gone from this world to join Aleu, Jenna and Balto in the in everlasting love and peace.
