Author's Note: This turned out a lot longer than I had wanted it to originaly. The pain purpose of this fic was practice writting in frist person point of view.
No one has ever had a bond as strong as the one my best friend and I had. We were practically inseparable. If someone needed to find one of us, they always knew they would find the other.
But one day someone tried to snatch that away from us.
In a blind furry, someone tried to take my life. The life I shared with my best friend. The only life either of us could remember.
I guess there was no way we could have prevented it. Maybe it could have been, but no one will know. All I remember is my best friend and I were sitting by the cool lake, watching the small moon swallow up the large sky when I felt sharp teeth penetrate my throat as my friend let out a surprised grunt.
The only thing I could think of was getting the both of us away safely. I had to.
But I didn’t think there would be any hope for me.
I could feel my blood seeping out of me. My attacker had their jaws wrapped tightly around my neck. I could tell they would not let go.
Until my friend distracted them.
I had no clue what was happening. My vision had gotten so blurry and distorted I had to shut my eyes.
But my hearing was still there.
I could hear my best friend’s fur blowing against the wind as she leapt at me and my attacker, sending the three of us flying to the ground. I lay there silently; hoping whoever it was that attacked had just went away. For a second I thought they were really gone.
Until I heard the attacker standing to their paws.
Before I had any time to react, I could feel myself being dragged along the cold ground in the teeth of what I can only describe as someone pure evil.
As I could feel my energy leaving me, I only hoped my friend had gotten away. That she would not meet the same fate as I.
Let this be quick, I silently pleaded. Please, please let this be quick.
Just as I was almost completely without hope of making it out alive to see my friend again, I heard her distinctive growl from behind us.
Fear was the first thing I felt stronger than before. The only thing I could think of was my friend’s safety. If only one of us could make it would alive, I prayed it would be her, not me.
All of a sudden I no longer felt the strong jaws wrapped around my neck. My attacker went after my best friend.
Her plan obviously worked.
But what now? She must have figured I could not get away in my weakened state.
Then again… maybe she hadn’t.
I wanted to call out, but I knew better. If I did, that might attract the attacker’s attention back to me. And that would ruin my friend’s plan. The only thing I could do was silently try to struggle away, hoping the unknown attacker would not notice me.
All seemed to be going according to plan until I heard my friend fall to the ground with a grunt.
I strained to hear the sound of her standing back to her paws, but it didn’t come.
Anger replaced my fear. I didn’t care if I made it anymore; the only thing on my mind now was revenge.
That was it.
Revenge.
The one thing I now wanted.
Taking a deep breath, I opened my eyes a little. Just enough to see my attacker, a solid black male.
With a slight snarl, I leapt at him; my front paws out in front of me.
I saw him turn just before I hit him. A look of shock was on his face. For a split second I wondered if I should regret my action, but the answer came almost as quickly as the question.
No.
With my eyes clenched shut as tightly as possible, I sunk my teeth into the black wolf’s own neck. I winced as the bitter metallic taste of his blood seeped down my throat. It was a wonder to me at how he could have kept a hold on my neck as long as he did without being sick.
As I tasted more of the blood slowly seep down my throat one bitter drop at a time, I could feel the male getting weaker. It wasn’t as fast as I, but more quickly than I thought.
How much longer? I asked myself silently. I knew it wouldn’t be easy for me to purposely kill another of my kind, but this wolf was dangerous.
The only thing that told me he was getting even weaker was his attempts to throw me off started to get farther apart. It was my cue that I had to end it soon.
I opened my eyes briefly and risked a glance around. I surprised myself when I looked down at the black male and the growing pool of crimson blood at my front paws.
In slight horror I released my grip on him. As his head and upper body hit the ground, I heard him mumble something under his breath inaudibly.
Confused at what to do next, I stood there for a little bit, watching, waiting. For what, I do not know.
After he lay still, I sighed and turned in the direction of my friend fearing what I might discover. And sure enough I found her just as I figured I would: lying still upon the ground.
With a sigh, I started to turn around. I didn’t get very far, though. As soon as I had my back to where I had left the black wolf, I felt sharp teeth in the back of my neck once again.
In panic, I threw myself back, trying to throw the male off. As I did so, I could feel him grip on me tighten. A sharp pain coursed through my body, causing me to flinch.
I was about to lose all hope once more when all of a sudden the male’s grip slacked a little. It was still enough for me to escape from his teeth, though.
Shaking, I stood there for a minute completely unsure of what to do next. I knew what I wanted to do. But was it the right thing?
Before I could finally think about what to do, I acted. With a quite snarl I leapt at the black male again.
I had completely forgotten about the cliff’s edge a mere foot behind him.
As we fell, I looked up, seeing my friend’s shocked face as I disappeared below. At least she was safe.
The fall seemed to last a life time. I almost wished I could suspend myself in mid-air or at least pro-long the time it would take for me to make contact with the ground.
Clamping my eyes shut, I could tell I was about to crash into the cold, hard ground.
As I hit, the breath seemed to be taken right out of me.
I tried to pick up my head, but it was too heavy. Wincing with a large amount of unbearable pain, I glanced to the top of the cliff I had fallen from. Blinking, I could make out the form of my best friend running down the large cliff as fast as she could without falling.
Trying not to think about the pain coursing though my body, I quickly glanced in the direction the black wolf had fallen. Seeing his twisted body, I shuddered slightly.
As vision became blurry again, I closed my eyes. It was getting harder to breathe and all though I was lying down, I still felt like I was spinning.
Slowly, I opened my eyes, greeted by blackness. Sighing softly, I closed them once again.
Part of me wanted to give up right there. I knew if it wasn’t the hope of seeing my friend, I would have. But just the fact that she was alive gave me reason enough to hold on for at least a little longer.
Sniffing the air, I could tell my friend was close.
“Aimée…?” I heard her sweet voice say my name softly.
I opened my mouth to speak, but no sound came from it. With great difficulty, I took a deep breath to calm me. Again I opened my eyes without much hope. But this time the fuzzy outline of my friend was before me.
Another sharp pain coursing throughout my body caused me to clamp my eyes shut once more. I could tell my breathing was getting more and more shallow, too.
As I laid there, my best friend at my side, I started to feel my pain ebb away. My breathing started to become slightly easier, but I knew it wasn’t a good sign.
I was ever so slowly slipping away.
A small part was somewhat happy. No more suffering sounded good, but I just couldn’t leave my friend.
But there was nothing I could do.
Nothing but lay there and hope that by some miracle I would pull through.
Time all most seemed to stand still as my breathing got more and more shallow. I knew that it probably wouldn’t be long before my suffering was over.
But I didn’t want to go.
There was going to be so much that I would miss. Not only mine and my friend’s life, but… everything! I wouldn’t be able to really experience life.
Seconds ticked by and my pain lessened even more.
After a few minutes it was gone completely.
I opened my eyes slightly and glanced around. Nothing but a blinding whiteness met my eyes. But even though I couldn’t see anything, I could hear something.
My friend calling my name; calling me back. And I knew I had to go back. I wasn’t done experiencing life to its fullest yet.
I once again closed my eyes willing myself to wake up. Slowly, I started to feel pain again, but I barely noticed after my surge of joy.
I was really going to make it.
Time ticked slowly by once more. I knew I had to open my eyes again, but in a way I was afraid of what would be before my eyes. What if I really didn’t make it? What if it was all some sort of trick?
Gathering my courage, I slowly opened my eyes once more, ready for disappointment, but it did not come.
As I opened my eyes, I could clearly see my friend standing above me, her brown eyes widening in surprise and joy.
“Aimée!” she barked happily.
I winced in pain a little as she nuzzled me, but smiled all the same, happy to just be alive.
“Hey Marise,” I replied, my voice full of emotion.
As she stood over me protectively, I knew never would there be a friendship quite like ours ever again. Through thick and thin we had always been together.
And we always will.
The End
