“Get out of here you mutt!” shouted an angry man as he ran after a brown- reddish dog who had a grey muzzle, underbelly and red paws, down the street. The dog’s deep blue eyes didn’t show any worries in while chased like this, actually he was getting pretty used to it by now. The cold wind in the face was a thrill for him and laughing at the slow man behind him was even more fun.

The man behind him gave up soon, cursing the dog angrily because of its escape. No one must hear about this, the man probably thought. But what had he done?

------

Cass, the young dog slowed down after a few minutes, making sure he was free from the man. When he stopped, he laughed happily and kept walking down the street. His eyes were scanning the neighborhood carefully. It was dark outside but the lights from the windows lit up the street.

A few people were walking the streets, before going home into the warmth and meet their families, if they had any. But Cass wasn’t like them, why should the most popular dog of Nomehave to stay at one place while there was so much action around and chaos to make? But Cass didn’t see anything interesting happening so he went home to his owner.

His owner was a man at the age of 23. He lived in a small, worn down house and worked at the store. He had adopted Cass for company but most of the time he was working over time to pay for the rent. Cass didn’t mind, he had been used to it already. His owner, whose name was Carl, had left a window opened for Cass to climb in if he was away. In Cass’ mind it was the main entrance to the house.

Cass had just jumped through the window landing on the cold wooden floor. He yawned tiredly and settled in a corner on a small blanket, his head lay on his front paws as his eyes closed and soon he was asleep.

“CASS!” Carl shouted looking for his dog which he found in the corner at last.

“What did you do now? The baker is mad at you. He said you went into his house yesterday to meet Nina the little pretty Dalmatian.” Carl said and his voice was angry. Cass yawned looking around the room paying a little attention to Carl. Carl noticed that and didn’t know why he was even trying, it was happening again and again anyway.

“If you do this again I’ll have to chain you!” He said in a warning voice and took his jacket and stormed out to go to work.

Cass watched as he left and yawned again. Since he had been already up, he didn’t feel like going back to sleep. He stood up and stretched before jumping through the window.

When he got into to town people were already up and walking around, like always. But Cass wasn’t interested in the people of the town, the sexy females of Nome was all he really cared about...and they of him.

As he walked past he smiled to all the females around, most of them blushed, others smiled proudly.

But then some of the girls’ owners noticed him and kicked snow to keep him away, to the girls’ great dislike. He was used to it by now so it didn’t bother him as he kept on walking.

“Cass!” A sweet and attractive voice was heard from behind him he glanced over his shoulder to see a gorgeous female. Her fur was a mix of dark brown, light and normal. She had a lot of spots both darker and whiter and bit of red. She also had a blue ribbon around her neck, probably something her owner gave her.

Cass acted like he hadn’t noticed her and kept on walking, but a bit slower.

“CASS!” She called again and ran to him.

“Oh hi Sadeye, I didn’t notice you there.”  He said and looked at her quickly but turned away again.

“Oh Cass honey, why do you act like this to your…” She couldn’t complete the sentence because he had kissed her before she could do anything. But she liked it and melted down happily. Cass was so thankful he had kissed her in time; he hated the word “girlfriend” and did everything to avoid hearing it, though it had happened a few times already and it had never ended well.

“I have to go now, I’ll see you later,” Cass said before sprinting away and blinking at her. It looked like Sadeye hadn’t noticed because she was sitting there still wagging her tail slowly, looking up at the sky dreamily.

Cass stopped after running quite the distance away from her. He sighed with relief. Suddenly he felt something warm behind him and something sharp at his neck. He knew who it was but acted dumb just for the pleasure of it.

“Hey Cassy!” the creature behind him whispered into his ear.

“Hello Pixi” Cass said before licking her ear which always made her shiver. Pixi was bit of a tom-boy but she couldn’t resist Cass like all the other girls. Her main fur was light brown, down her feet ran dark brown and then white. Her pelt was white and the tip of her tail was white as well.

“Pixi, come here girl,” someone called for her in the distance. Pixi looked up in the direction which she had been called from.

“I have to go, handsome, I’ll hopefully see you soon,” She said and fluttered her tail in his face before walking away. Cass watched her and a grin came across his face. Life surely was sweet.

-----------------

A beautiful dog ran across the frozen ground. Her white fur with a bit of grey fell in with the snowy ground. She was chasing a small girl, in a playful manner outside a new house.

The little girl was giggling all the time while being chased and soon fell into the snow and the dog lay down next to her licking her face.

“Tanja come in and help us to get your things into your bedroom!” A man called the little girl who stood up and ran inside, leaving the dog to look around the new town she was in.

“Hey there, new girl,” someone called her from across the street. The female looked up to see another girl coming to her.

“Hey there, I’m Sadeye,” The other girl said proudly showing off a bit.

“Hi, I’m Soraya,” The white and grey female said politely and smiled. She had thought moving into a new town might boost up her confidence a bit.

“Hey, you look like a nice girl, want to hang out with me and my friends tonight?” Sadeye asked.

“Oh that would be great, you could maybe show me this town,” She asked hopeful.

“Sure. You can meet us here after dinner,” Sadeye said before walking away. Soraya was surprised over what had just happened, she had never been popular in the town she had lived in.

------------------------

Sadeye was running back into town when she saw him.

“CASS!” She shouted happily wagging her tail like crazy. Cass looked up and sighed “not again!” he thought and tried to get away but Sadeye was already there.

“Sadeye, we need to talk!” He said looking at her. She stopped smiling and her tail stopped wagging. She knew what it meant.

“I can’t see you anymore!” He said trying to act sad but inside he was really happy.

“Every girl I knew said I shouldn’t trust you but still I did, I fell for you Cass and this is how you break up with me?!” She yelled and him with tears in her eyes.

“I never want to see your face again Cass!” she knew it wasn’t true but she didn’t want to look weak.

“I’m sorry Sadeye” Cass said looking at another direction. Sadeye dug her claws into his paws till they started to bleed then ran away crying.

“Thank god” Cass said relieved and walked back home.

------------

Soraya was so excited to meet new friends, or so she hoped. She had left early after dinner and Tanja had asked her dad where she had been going but he had said she had been probably looking around town.

Tanja and Soraya were almost never apart. They had done everything together ever since Tanja had gotten Soraya for her birthday.

Suddenly Soraya could here sob from a distance and looked up. She saw 3 black figures coming from a shadow.

“Hello?” Soraya said but then realized it was Sadeye along with two of her friends. But Sadeye’s eyes seemed to be red from crying.

“What happened?” Soraya asked worriedly as she saw the other two trying to comfort her. She walked slowly over to them and sat down opposite her.

“He...he dumped me!” Sadeye said sobbing next to her friends.

“Who?” Asked Soraya a bit angry at who ever made her new friend sad. But when Sadeye was going to say it she started to cry again.

“It’ was Cass!” Whispered one of her friends to Soraya.

“Cass!” Soraya whispered so no one else heard. She hoped that she would never meet that Cass who had broken the girl’s heart so badly.

-------------

“You “broke” up with Sadeye?” A silver husky, with light brown markings asked laughing.

“We were never going out, she only thought so because of that one time” Cass said irritatingly and rolled his eyes. It had been a week since it happened and his best friend had just gotten home after a delivery with his team. They had known each other since pups and competed over who was more popular. Which Cass had won.

“Well it doesn’t matter anyway! I can get any girl I want and you know it.” Cass announced while stretching in the snow and yawning loudly. His friend didn’t say anything but smiled.

Cass stood up again and was about to walk away, but then he saw her. A beautiful white and grey border collie with a big black bow around her neck was running with a little blond girl. Cass just watched her amazed. He had never seen her before. He had to have her.

His friend noticed what he was looking at.

“That’s the new girl in town, I heard about it from Tina, Sadeye’s friend. They really hate you man! And she does to. Her name is Soraya!” His friends said sitting down next to him watching the pretty female.

“There is no chance…” His friend stopped speaking because Cass was already gone to talk with her.

“This is going to end badly” He laughed and lay down in the shadow to watch the show.

Cass walked up to Soraya who had to wait outside while he owner went into the shop. She sat there watching the people around until she noticed the dog now standing next to her.

“Can I help you?” She asked giving the stranger a suspicious look. Cass smiled proudly and sat down next to her but as he did, Soraya stood up.

“I am sorry miss, I’m new to this town and don’t know anyone who could be so nice to show me around” Cass lied and stood up again. Soraya didn’t take it and still kept her distance.

“I’m Buck and just moved her from White Mountain” Cass lied again and smiled.

“I’m Soraya. Well I guess I can show you around, I know how it is to be new.” Soraya said and they walked off together.

Cass’s amazed friend watched Cass’ leaving with the gorgeous girl who really hated his guts.

------------------------

2 months later

“She is different, man! I can’t act around her like I normally do around other girls! Maybe it’s because I’m not being myself but this Buck guy!” Cass was walking around frustrated, talking to his friend.

“I have to run away from her every time we see another girl coming up close, because if they would call my name she would figure out who I am,” Cass said and kicked an old can which was lying on the ground.

“Chill man, aren’t you going out with her tonight? Maybe you can just take her outside of town, to watch the sunset by the sea,” said his friend who was getting bored by this conversation.

“That’s a great idea! Thanks!” Cass said before leaving to meet Soraya.

Soraya stood outside her house. The weather was good and there were no clouds in the sky. She smiled happily; Buck had been such an amazing friend to her. They were really growing close. Or so she thought.

“Hey there, beautiful,” Cass said as he came behind her. Soraya was taken by a surprise so she almost jumped up and was blushing a lot when she looked at him.

“Hi Buck,” she said and walked over to him. Cass looked up at the sky. He knew there would be a lot of dogs watching the sunset tonight, the weather was way too good.

“Hey, I want to show you something,” Cass said and walked towards the town. Soraya followed him, not sure what they could do in town.

Cass stopped outside the boiler room and looked inside. No one was there. Relived, he pushed the door open.

“Isn’t the weather way to good to be hanging inside?” Soraya asked looking around the empty room.

“Follow me, you’ll just have to wait and see,” Cass walked through a gap in the wall. Remembering the story his grandfather had told him when he went down there with his grandma.

“Buck it’s so dirty down here,” Soraya said behind him getting stuck in dust webs that were in the way.

“This is the most beautiful place in the world,” Cass said and walked on.

“I can’t see why,” Soraya said and Cass laughed because it was the same thing his grandma had said.

Finally, he stopped in a bigger room under the hospital.

“Look these are the polar ice caps,” Cass said and pushed broken bottles under the light from the room above.

“Buck, those are broken bottles,” Soraya said watching him move around the room.

“And the sun and to the north,” Cass said and moved aside making the bottles cast light from the room above into the corner of the room. And there - in front of them - were the northern lights.

“Oh Buck, that’s beautiful” Soraya gasped in amazement watching the lights. Cass was very proud of himself. This move had to work!

Soraya turned to look at him and Cass smiled back. Cass leaned closer and was about to kiss her when a voice was heard above in the boiler room.

Cass listened more carefully and could hear it was Sadeye.

“Damn what is she doing here?” Cass thought he had gotten rid of her.

“I’ll be right back,” He said to Soraya who watched him run up into the boiler room again.

“Sadeye, what are you doing here?” Cass said and Sadeye turned around surprised.

“CASS!” Sadeye said angrily

“Still trying to get all the girls? I just talked to Pixi and she told me you broke up with her! Can’t you handle it when we get to close to you?” Sadeye snarled before walking out and kicking the door hard behind her.

Cass turned around and was about to go down again to meet Soraya, but when he turned around she was standing right behind him and had heard every single word Sadeye had said.

“You’re Cass?” She said in a low voice.

“Soraya, I can explain!” Cass said but was stopped before he could say anything else.

“They warned me not to fall for the guy called Cass! They said he only wanted one thing! And I’m guessing you were finally going to make your move now! At a place where no one else was” Soraya was standing face to face with Cass tears were starting to show up in her eyes.

“Soraya…” Cass tried

“I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT! I can’t believe I was falling for you!” Soraya ran to the door and tried to push it open but it didn’t move. Soraya tried again but still, it didn’t move.

Cass watched her but didn’t dare to move.

After a while, Soraya gave up and lied down close to the door. The entire time she didn’t even glance at Cass.

“Soraya please…”

“No Cass, don’t even dare come close to me again, I never want to speak to you again!” Soraya didn’t even look up when she spoke. Cass could hear that her voice was breaking and her breathing was hard from the crying.

------------------------

Time had passed and morning had arrived. Both Cass and Soraya still lay in a different corner of the room. Cass didn’t dare to say anything; he knew he had screwed up to much already.

The door was opened and both Cass and Soraya looked up.

“Well, well, what do we have here?” A man said laughing. He was most likely a musher looking for his dogs who came often to the boiler room to spend the night away from the cold.

“Looks like there was some action going on.” The man said still laughing. Soraya wasn’t in a mood for this so she stood up and gave a quite growl as she walked out.

“Or not,” He said and realized the dogs hadn’t been close to each other at all.

“Well you’ll get her next time, chump!” The man announced and walked away. He hadn’t found his dogs so there was no point in staying.

Cass sighed and stood up as well. No point in staying here.

“What have I done?” Cass asked himself as he came out to the street. Remembering the shock on Soraya’s face was horrible. Why had it gotten to him so badly? She wasn’t different from the other girls…or was she?

-----------------------------

“Cass I’m home!” Carl announced as he closed the door behind himself. He was surprised that his dog was actually at home.

“What is the matter, boy?” Carl asked as he sat down in the kitchen. Cass had laid his head on his knee and Carl laid his hand on his head.

“The famous Cass got rejected?” Carl said teasingly. Cass wasn’t very happy with Carl teasing him like this so he left.

“Get over it Cass! It’s just one girl!” Cass tried saying to himself as he walked down the street. But it seemed that the news had gotten out between the girls. As he walked by they had usually jumped at him making sweet talk but now they only gave him an evil glance before walking away.

“Hey there, boy,” A deep voice said coming from behind him. Cass turned around seeing his father standing there.

“Hey dad,” Cass replied. His dad wasn’t proud of him like his other siblings and his mom was rather disappointed with him. But it hadn’t mattered much to him.

“Cass, this has got to stop!” Aidan said. Cass tried to turn away but his father stopped him.

“Me and your mother have tried to talked to you about this before, but now you see it’s coming back to hunt you!” Aidan announced.

“Well, then you and mom should be happy!” Cass growled.

“Cass, listen to me! The thing you did to that girl was unfair. But, I’m guessing, there is another reason behind this. You’ve fallen for her.” Aidan said. Cass looked up at his father.

“Like it matters now?! She’s gone, she hates me and you know what, she should!” Cass was tired of this. He turned around and walked away.

Aidan sighed and watched his son.

“Don’t do the same mistake twice.”

----------------

“Soraya…Soraya?” Tanja was lying on the floor in front of her dog trying to call her name but she ignored her and turned her head the other direction.

“MOM! There’s something wrong with Soraya!” Tanja called to her mom who had just been walking outside her room.

Her mom came in and looked at Soraya.

“Mom what’s wrong with her?” Tanja asked as her mother tried to get Soraya’s attention.

“I’m not sure, sweetie, but if she’s not better tomorrow I’ll take her to the vet,” She said and went back to what she had been doing before.

“Soraya, please don’t be sad,” Tanja tried saying but Soraya only sighed. She loved Tanja so much, but now she just wasn’t in the mood to be playing around.

----------------

Tanja had given up and gone outside like her mom had told her to. Soraya was stiff so she decided to go out and get some fresh air.

As she came out, she noticed the weather was good.

“I might as well take a walk to get my mind of things” She thought and walked into town.

As she was walking in the town she suddenly realized.

“What if I meet him?” She thought to her horror. She glanced around quickly and turned around.

“I’ve got to get out of here fast!” She quickened up her pace but then she heard it.

“Cheer up man!” A dog said coming around the corner.

“Will you just leave me alone for one second?” Cass growled at him. Soraya froze at the spot and tried to think quickly. She ran into an alley.

“Please don’t come here, please don’t come here!” Soraya thought as she ran to the far end of it. But before she could stop herself she had ran into a dog that was searching for food in the garbage.

“Ouch!” the dog fell backwards and Soraya landed on top of him.

“Oh I’m so sorry,” Soraya tried to say as she stepped of him and started walking backwards.

“Where do you think you are going?” The dog said standing up and grabbing her bandana with his teeth.

“Let go!” Soraya growled but the dog only dragged her closer to him.

“What’s going on in there?” Cass said stopping in front of the alley hearing yelling coming from inside of it.

His friend had also stopped and looked the same way.

“It’s probably alley dogs fighting for food, let’s go!” He kept on walking.

“Get of me! Hel…,” Cass’s eyes widened, he knew that voice.

“Soraya!” He ran into the alley seeing a large dog throwing Soraya into garbage cans trying to knock her unconscious.

Cass jumped at the dog and threw him into the corner of the alley, fighting him there. But the other dog was big and strong and used to fights. He hit Cass again and again with his paws but Cass wasn’t going to give up.

Cass tried to stand up but got his balance thrown of making him hit the wall. The other dog took advantaged of it and threw himself in the same direction crushing Cass between himself and the wall.

Cass screamed in pain but it got the better of him knocking him out cold.

------------------------

“SORAYA!!” Cass woke up and looked around. He winced in pain but realized he was still in the same alley as before.

“Oh no!” Cass said standing up in a hurry but fell back down from the pain.

“What happened? Where is Soraya? Where is the other dog?” all these thoughts went through Cass’s head as he tried to stand up again.

Cass finally managed to get himself out of the alley but fell once again.

“Cass?” Sadeye was looking down on him.

“What happened to you?” Sadeye tried to help him up but he just fell back down.

“Sadeye you have to get help! Some dog took Soraya!” Cass said managing to stand.

“What do you mean? Your friend Hawk just saved her and brought her to the vet.” Sadeye said trying to support him.

“What?” Cass couldn’t believe it; he thought that Hawk had left when he went in to save Soraya.

“We better get you to the vet. What happened to you anyways?” Sadeye was looking at the scars and bruises on Cass’s body.

“Wait, I still don’t get it, didn’t Hawk tell anyone about me?” Cass asked realizing he had been left behind even though his friend knew about him.

“Cass you’re not thinking straight, let’s get you to the vet first.”  Sadeye said and Cass couldn’t say anything more, he was too weak already.

------------

Two days had passed and he had been stuck inside of the hospital. No one had asked about him, no one had visited him except his owner who was now taking him home.

“What had happened? Why had Hawk left him behind?” this had been on Cass’s mind ever since that night.

“Be careful now and don’t go running away again!” Carl said leaving Cass at the house before going to work.

“I can’t stay here; I need to figure out things!” Cass said to himself. Even though he was injured he wasn’t going to let that stop him.

“Who can I talk to first?” Cass wondered as he was escaping the house with much of difficulties. The window had seemed higher than usually.

Cass looked around and spotted Hawk. He stopped himself from calling his name. It would be better to follow him, seeing were he was going.

After a short time of trailing behind he realized where he was heading. Hawk stopped outside Soraya’s house.

“What’s he doing here?” Cass wondered as he tried to get closer.

Soraya came out the doggie door and Hawk greeted her.

“Thanks for saving me,” Soraya said with a smile.

“Not a problem, I’m glad you agreed to go out with me,” Hawk said with a grin.

“I’m still just surprised how you got away with fighting the dog and not getting one scar on you.” Soraya said in amazement.

“WHAT!” Cass stepped back in surprise. Hawk had arrived after him taking all the credit for saving Soraya.

“Well it’s my luck I guess,” Hawk said and walked with Soraya into town.

He was a huge liar. Cass wanted to attack him right there but stopped himself because of Soraya.

“So where are we going?” Soraya asked after awhile. Cass kept close behind. He didn’t trust his so called friend.

“You’ll see” Hawk only replied and kept on leading the way. After awhile they arrived at the boiler room.

“We are not going in there for our first date?” Soraya asked worried remembering the date she had gone on with Cass.

“Oh no, I was just supposed to meet someone here for few minutes. Is it okay you come with me?” Hawk asked as he went inside.

Soraya agreed to wait for him and went inside after him.

“There’s no one here, is he or she coming soon?” Soraya turned to Hawk but just in the same moment he pushed the door closed behind him.

“Hawk?” Soraya was walking backwards but hit the wall. Hawk kept getting closer and closer.

“Oh, how my luck has changed” He said with an awful grin on his face.

“First Cass gets dumped by you, and then he saves you and gets knocked out at the same time letting me take all the credit.” Hawk licked his lips and without a warning he jumped at Soraya.

Soraya tried to avoid him but he caught hold of her tail dragging her closer.

Cass stood outside he had seen Hawk closing the door and tried to jump in before he did but because of his injuries he wasn’t quick enough.

“Damn it!” He could hear Soraya screaming and trying to get away inside.

“I have to help her,” He thought in panic and tried to run at the door but that was bad idea and only ended in him falling.

He looked all around himself but then remembered how his grandfather had gone in with his grandma.

Finally managing to lift the nails up he pushed the door open.

“GET OFF HER YOU BASTARD!” Cass yelled at Hawk who had Soraya stuck in a corner.

“Oh Cass, buddy, you still standing. What a shame!” Hawk wasn’t very pleased with this change of plans.

“One more chance! GET OFF HER!” Cass said but Hawk didn’t move. Cass snapped and ran at Hawk pushing him away from Soraya.

Hawk turned around and saw an opening on Cass’s neck. He charged at it making Cass scream in pain. It was the same place the other dog had attacked and the wound hadn’t healed yet.

Soraya ran towards the door. She had to get away. But then she heard Cass’s scream. Looking back she noticed that he was losing. She had to do something!

Soraya charged at Hawk landing on top of him. She dug her claws deep into his skin making him gasp in pain and letting Cass go.

“Get off me you little shit!” Hawk yelled and tried to shake Soraya of while holding Cass down.

Soraya lost her grip and balance and landed on the floor next to Cass.

“I’m sorry!” Cass said, his voice was weak after all the beating and blood was dripping from his wound.

“It’s okay, just hang on!” Soraya said distracted before standing up again. Hawk dug his claws deeper into Cass’s skin making sure he couldn’t move anywhere.

“I’ve always hated you! Do you know how annoying it is to be in your shadow?” Hawk whispered into Cass’s ear.

“And as soon as your finished I’ll take your girlfriend here and make her beg for death too,” He chuckled in a voice that Cass didn’t know anymore.

Soraya stood up and growled angrily. Hawk was amused by her expression.

“Do you really think you can beat me?” He asked her.

Soraya attacked him again biting into his skin. He finally let go of Cass to try to shake Soraya of again. But she held on.

“What is going on there?” Someone was coming to the boiler room. Hawk’s eyes widened.

Conall, Cass’s brother came in with more dogs. They all stopped when they saw what had been going on in there.

Conall watched is brother’s body which seemed to be taking his last breath.

“What have you done?” Conall growled as he walked closer to Hawk. Soraya was exhausted and couldn’t hold him any longer so she fell of him.

“GET AWAY FROM THIS TOWN NOW AND DON’T COME BACK!” Conall growled and Hawk didn’t need to hear this twice. He was already outnumbered.

Hawk walked cowardly out and ran as fast as he could.

“Cass?” Soraya lay next to him. His breathing was getting irregular and his wounds were still bleeding.

“Get some help!” Conall called to two of his friends who ran as quickly as possible.

Conall stood back, He didn’t want to interfere.

“Please! Wake up!” Soraya begged as she nuzzled his face her tears falling down on his face.

“I forgive you!” Soraya said in a low whisper.

--------------------------

“You got lucky there fellow!” A man said as he did his last check on Cass.

He had bandages around his neck and his other wounds were just starting to heal properly.

“Well you can go now” He said and lifted him of the table. Cass walked out in the hallway where is owner was waiting.

“Just be careful he doesn’t get into anymore fights or it might be the last of him!” The vet said but Cass hadn’t heard because he wanted to get out.

“Cass!” Soraya and Tanja had been waiting outside. Cass walked down the stairs but before he could reach the bottom step Soraya had already gotten to him and nuzzled him passionately making them fall together into the snowy ground.

“Hey there beautiful!” Cass said licking her face.

“Hey there yourself.” Soraya said returning the favour.

“Please don’t get in danger for awhile now, I need a little break” Cass said teasingly making Soraya chuckle.

“Yes I promise!”
