Beyond the Veil
A Balto Fan Fic
By Ahura Werewolf
Balto and Jenna lay at the foot of a roaring fire. The cold night had driven Balto not to stay out on the boat that he called home. He and Jenna had spent the day watching Rosie's father furiously trying to dig a path to their front door but everytime the path he had dug quickly filled in with fresh snow. Finally he through down his shovel and cursed walking in doors. But now the wind outside began to pick up and the shudders of the house slammed with a loud bang. Balto's ears perked at the sound he grunted, "Can't a guy get a good nights sleep for once." He went back to sleep trying to ignore the banging of the shudder. A few hours later the large grandfather clock against the far wall chimmed, Balto opening a blood shot eye saw that it was midnight and he hadn't gotten a descent sleep.
Stretching himself before the warm fire and trys to go back to sleep. But an icy numbness creeps up his limbs. Balt at first takes no notice of it until it feels like it has crept into his very heart. He turns to look around and gazes at Jenna who is fast asleep at his side, smiling he leans against her. Closing his eyes again the icy feeling still in his chest he exhales and lies still. He feels lighter than air and he opens his eyes looking around. The icy feeling had passed but now he felt something usual. Like a comforting weight had been lifted from him and he didn't know what had changed. Walking around the room he gazed at the clock and the fire wondering what had happened. Then turning back to look at Jenna he was horrified at what he saw.
His body lay curled at Jenna's side, he thought, "There is no way this is possible! I must be dreaming." He shook his head to end this waking nightmare but when he opened his eyes nothing had changed. He still stood before his body, and it seemed that his body itself hadn't noticed the change. It was still slumbering peacefully unaware that it's essence stood nearby. A twinge of fear ran through Balto's heart, he began to panic. He paced back in forth of his body torn between trying to figure out what to do and at the same time trying to figure out how it had happened. Just as he turned back to his body, Jenna got up and wandered over to her water bowl to get a drink. Balto dashed over to her saying, "Jenna can you hear me?" Jenna gave no response he tried to nuzzle her but his ghostly muzzle passed through her. Fear engulfed Balto, it was like standing underneath a waterfall and it's oppressive weight felt like it would drive him through the floor. As Jenna made her way back to lie down next to his body he tried again to touch her. But his paw passed through her body like a knife through butter. Instead of trying to touch her he tried to paw at their water bowl but his ghostly paw passed through it with a puff of smoke.
"Great I cannot grab onto anything. To make matters worse Jenna cannot hear me and I cannot get back into my body. Things cannot honestly get any worse." Just like on cue his bodies breathing became labored. The sensation was uncomfortable. Balto noticed a faint glint of silver, turning he saw a silvery cord that connected from his chest to that of it's physical counterpart. The sensation of his dying body cause the fear to reach a breaking point in him. He hurried to his body's side. He gently placed his paws inside of his body and gently laided down. He tried to move and only managed to wiggle a few toes but the effort left him drained. His head swooned from the lack of oxygen. His thoughts were a chaotic mix of fear and frustration. His heartbeat fluttered like a dying bird it leaped within his chest like it was trying to escape it's dying home. His vision blurred and he shook his head. His thoughts raced like rush hour traffic. His breathing became labored, as his vision began to swirl out of focus he thought, "No! I have to stay awake!" He gasps for air, filling his lungs than exhales. The next thing he knows he is outside of his body again. He looks down at his deserted body than paces before it. He looks at the silvery cord and paws at it. From what he can see it looks like a piece of yarn thread but as he tugs on the cord it doesn't tear. He decides to see how far it can go. Balto walks to the otherside of the house and it follows him. The silvery cord grows and allows him to move around. But eventually it drags him back to his body's side.
As he looks at the silvery cord, he tugs on it again but it doesn't give. A slowly a crack appears on the cord, it grows larger. Balto panics trying to figure out away to fix it, but the cord shatters the pieces glint like diamonds then disappear. Balto's body slumps to it's side and lays still. Balto looks at his now deceased body and says, "Now what am I suppose to do." A bright light appears behind Balto as he turns to enter it his body stirs. Balto turns and looks back and his body says, "Great I am stuck in this mangy wolf's body but it will have to do. It's good to be back." Balto sees the look in his eyes have changed the pupils are dialated and give a cold indifferent stare. The posture of his body has tensed like it was ready to snap at the slightest noise. His head turns and says, "Well wolf I am back." Balto immediately nows the voice. Steele has returned and he is now inside of his body!
