Prologue:

It was a dark night in the forest nearby the Talbourne’s cave. A shadowy figure walked carefully through the trees, glancing behind it from time to time. The figure was a quadruped, a wolf from the look of it. The clouds that covered the night sky also obscured the moonlight that would normally have let up the snow on the ground like a spotlight, so that the forest was cloaked in darkness, and thus the wolf’s true identity could not be determined.

The wolf stepped into a clearing beside a set of high rocks and looked around, then said only two words. “…for change.” It said.

Three more figures materialized out of the darkness surrounding the rocks and walked over to the wolf. “Were you followed?” One of them asked.

The wolf shook it’s head. “…no, I was very careful.”

The figure nodded. “As well you should be. I doubt if your clan would be very happy with you if they knew what you are planning.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “Yes, this is very true, but I will do what I must for the safety of my family.”

The figure nodded. “That’s certainly understandable.” It said.

The harassing attacks you have made on the Talbourne have had their effect.” The unidentified wolf said. “The guard has been strengthened outside the cave.”

The figure nodded. “As we knew it would be.”

The unidentified wolf nodded as well. “…and you have maintained your word. Thus far there have been no deaths, only minor injuries.”

The figure nodded. “As I said before, I do not wish to harm anyone, only to gain the Talbourne’s considerable territory. After the attack on our Clan by Lytion, the Lightning clan has been very slow to recover.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “As we all are.”

The figure nodded again. “However, I doubt if the Alpha of the Talbourne will be willing to just hand such an advantage over to us.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “This is true as well. As much as it pains me to say I think he will have to be the only casualty in insuring my famiy’s safety.”

The figure nodded. “…and you are prepared to give him over to us?”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “…yes I am, but only if it is necessary, and we don’t know yet if it is.”

The figure nodded. “I too would like to avoid any bloodshed at all if possible. The Talbourne have been a mighty ally in the past. The last thing I want to do is to hurt them, but I will do what I must to insure the survival of my Clan, as you will do for your family.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “…and our deal still stands?”

The figure nodded back. “Yes, if you turn the Talbourne over to us you will be guaranteed security with our clan and granted a ten mile territory on the corner of what is presently controlled by the Talbourne as your own, to do with what you and your family see fit.”

The unidentified figure nodded. “I am taking great risk in this…” The wolf said.

The figure nodded. “We know, and our entire Clan appreciates you being able to see the bigger picture here. You will be compensated fully, possibly even more than your requests, if I can swing it with the council.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “…very good. Keep up with your attacks, maintain your word about not causing any deaths through them and you will win my trust and absolute cooperation in what must be done. For now I must go. We will meet here again in a week’s time.At which point I will have a better understanding of your intentions and we can discuss the particulars of my defection to the Lightning Clan.”

The figure nodded. “We will see you in a week then. Aniu keep you safe.”

The unidentified wolf nodded. “…and you.” It said.

With that the wolves turned away from each other and departed the clearing.

Chapter I:

Dash blinked several times as he stepped out of the cave and into the glaring sunlight.

The wolf standing guard at the Main Entrance to their home looked over, saw Dash and snapped to rigid attention. “Good morning my Alpha.” The young female said. “Reese reports the front entrance all secure. There is nothing unusual to report at this time sir.”

Dash nodded at Reese and she relaxed, but only slightly. “Reese, Aleu was supposed to be standing this post now.” He said. “Where is she?”

“I believe she took over the five hundred meter post my Alpha.” Reese said.

Dash sighed. “You believe Reese?” He asked. “…or you know? There is a profound difference between the two.”

Reese nodded. “I apologize my Alpha.” She said. “Aleu did take over the five hundred meter post.”

Dash nodded. “…better.” He said. “Is this your first time on guard duty?”

Reese’s face took on a sheepish expression and she nodded.

Dash smiled. “It’s alright. We’ve all been there.” He said. “…you can relax Reese. When did she take over that post?”

“Aleu relieved me of the five hundred meter post almost an hour ago.” She said.

A puzzled look crossed Dash’s face. “Why did she relieve you?” He asked..

“She didn’t say my Alpha.” Reese said. “She only told me she was relieving me of the five hundred meter post and that I was to stand her scheduled post at the Main Entrance.”

Dash nodded. ”…very well.” He said. “…stay sharp Reese.”

The young wolf nodded. “I will my Alpha.” She said.

Dash nodded once more and then started walking further into the forest

Dash didn’t even try to sneak up on Aleu. He wasn’t sure such a thing was even possible. …so he wasn’t surprised when she called his name without so much as turning her head. “Hey Dash.” She said. “…everything okay?”

Dash chuckled and shook his head. “How do you do that Aleu?” He asked.

Aleu smiled but remained facing forward. “I don’t know.” She said. “…guess over the years I’ve grown eyes in the back of my head.”

Dash laughed and nodded. “…something.” He said. “Why did you relieve Reese of her post? ..why are you out here instead of at the Main Entrance?”

Aleu sighed. “Reese is young.” She said.

Dash sighed and nodded. “…the casualties we took while fighting Lytion and the Shadow Clan have forced us to look to the younger generation to fill the holes in the Defense Force.”

Aleu nodded. “Yes, I know… but the five hundred meter post is the furthest out, our first line of defense. I just thought someone more experienced should handle it. …if that’s okay?”

Dash laughed. “…you really think I’m going to second guess you?” He asked. He stepped next to her and shook himself off.

It wasn’t snowing hard, but he’d let quite a bit of it accumulate on his back. As it fell to the ground his fur was left feeling a bit damp. The wind blew a bit and he shivered.

Aleu smiled. “…so, what brings  you all the way out here?” She asked.

“You actually.” Dash said. “…just wondering when you are going to relieve me.”

          “I’m not.” She said.

Dash was surprised, and it showed on his face. Almost involuntarily he took a step back. “…what?” He asked. “…why?”

Aleu sighed and her shoulders slumped forward somewhat. “As much as I love it, leading the clan is hard work and I’ve done it almost my entire life.” She said. “It’s beginning to tell on me.” For just a moment she turned her head to him and smiled, then resumed watching the trees ahead. “…besides, you’re doing a fantastic job. You really stepped in when the Clan needed you.”

Dash nodded. “…thank you.” He said. “…but I was really hoping that when you came back you’d take over again.”

Aleu sighed. “I can’t Dash. I’m not a puppy anymore… not even a young wolf/dog. I’d like to spend my last years in peace, as just another member of the Clan.”

Dash shook his head. “No matter what you do, Alpha or not Aleu, you’ll never be able to be “just another member of the Clan.”

Aleu nodded. “…guess I’ll have to give you that one.” She said.

“You don’t belong on guard duty, standing out here. You belong in the cave, leading these wolves. It’s what you were born for.” Dash said. “You’re so much more experienced. They need that right now.”

Aleu sighed. “…and how do you think I got that experience Dash?” She asked. “You have far more experience than I did when I took over the Talbourne. The Clan will follow you Dash. They have followed you. They’re not looking to me anymore. Not one wolf has asked me what to do since I got back. They’re looking to you. You led them through certain annihilation, through one of the toughest times this Clan has ever faced.”

Dash sighed. “Had it not been for her return we’d’ve been slaughtered. We’re only lucky enough that you were able to save her.”

Aleu sighed. “Dash, what I did was foolish, the mst reckless and stupid thing I’ve ever done in my entire life. I hurt all of you, Shadow, my mate and I almost destroyed my life, both here and after. I’m no hero for what I did, the only reason I’m standing here, the only reason any of us are standing here, is because our father has great grace, and he saw fit to forgive both Aniu and myself of our stupidity.”

“Still, the only reason we survived was because Aniu returned.” Dash said. “Not because of my leadership. If she hadn’t come back Lytion would’ve won easily.”

Aleu sighed again. “Dash, We only ever survive because of her. Do you think when I was Alpha it was any different? I’m nothing special Dash, just a wolf/dog, just like you.”

          Dash shook his head.

“..what?” Aleu asked. “You think I did it alone? I’d’ve never lasted one day as Alpha without Aniu. She is my strength, as she is to all of us, and should be to you.”

Dash nodded. “I know, she is.”

Aleu nodded back and once again looked at Dash. “Then step into this role Dash, give it your all and trust in her plan for you. Aniu never does anything without reason. She’s been grooming you for this moment since you decided to leave Nome to follow Shasta.”

Aleu stopped speaking and paused a moment, having accidentally spoken the name of her brother’s first love and the reason he’d decided to leave life as a pet in Nome and join the Talbourne. Shasta was a sensitive subject with Dash. She’d been murdered almost four years ago by the possessed husky Steele.

“…just trust her judgment.” Aleu said at last. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned through all that’s just happened to us it’s that Aniu and our father will never give us more than they know we can handle. If Aniu has placed this responsibility on you it’s only because you are the best suited for the job and she knows you can handle it. It will take some time, but go with it. Get out there, make mistakes, learn from them. You will be an Alpha for the ancients to sing of for ages if you will only believe in yourself.”

Dash sighed. “I just don’t know.” He said quietly. “I’m just so afraid I’m going to fail them.”

Aleu nodded. “I thought the same Dash.” She said. “When I decided to leave dad and follow my first pack across the great waters I was very scared. Not only did I have zero experience as a leader, I didn’t even know where the ice bridge would take us… or what we’d find when we got there… but Aniu had begun to show me who I was, and had promised through Muru to continue to do so if I would only have faith in her and complete the journey. After all the wolves in that pack were killed trying to re-cross the ice bridge my faith in her became even more important. I had no idea the Talbourne even existed at that point… but I had faith. That’s what you must do now… have faith. Her plan for you will be revealed to you when the time is right.”

Dash nodded. “I suppose you’re right.” He said.

Aleu smiled. “You’ll do fine Dash.” She said. “To lay to rest any doubt of full transference of Alpha to you we’ll make it official through the proper ceremony tomorrow night, just inform the Clan of the gathering.”

Dash nodded. “All right Aleu.” He said. “…and thank you. You vote of confidence means a lot to me.”

Aleu nodded back, her vision shifting forward again. “…and it’s not like I’m leaving or anything. You can ask me for advise anytime you’re unsure of yourself.”

Dash nodded again. “I appreciate that as well.” He said.

Aleu nodded back. “You have it in you to be a fine Alpha Dash. You just don’t realize it yet.”

Dash nodded. “…you really believe that?” He asked.

Aleu smiled. “Dash, when you came to us I thought it was a very bad idea. You were a young, wet behind the ears pup who was following his heart instead of his head, but when you were helping us search for mom and dad in that storm Shadow saw something in you that he liked, and when…” Aleu paused and sighed. “…and when you took off on your own and confronted Meesha and her wolves to save Shasta he saw still more. It was he who convinced me you could have a future here with us. After all these years I can honestly say that he was right and I’ve never been more wrong. I’ve watched you transform from that inexperienced, lovesick pup into one of the best leaders I’ve ever known. It has been an absolute honor to serve with you, and it will continue to be so as I serve under you. I’m sure that as you make this transition your unit will miss you, but the Clan as a whole will gain a great leader who will look after them and care for them for many years, just as I have.”

Dash chuckled and smiled. “Wow, I don’t even know what to say to that.” He said.

Aleu laughed. “Well every word is deserved, just don’t let it go to your head.”

Dash nodded and smiled. “…don’t worry, I won’t.”

Suddenly Aleu dropped low, her belly scraping the snow. She peered through the trees, her full attention switched forward.

Dash leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “…see something?” He asked. Well nurtured instinct caused his muscles to tense and his fur to to begin to stand on end. He could hear his heart beating in his ears as he waited for her report of what she’d spotted.

Aleu stood back up. “…just a deer.” She said.

Dash nodded. “Well, I’m going to let you get back to watching out for us.” He said. “…take care out here.”

Aleu nodded. “I will.” She said.

With that Dash turned and started the walk back to the cave.

Chapter II:

Aleu was tired as she walked through the Main Entrance and walked to the chambers she now shared with her mate Shadow. He was waiting inside, as she’d known he would be. She was growing worried of him. He’d taken the events of the past month very hard and she feared he might never fully recover from them. She’d always thought of him as very strong, but it seemed seeing her run down by a car had very nearly broken him… or perhaps it had. This was one of many things weighing heavily on Aleu’s conscience concerning her decision to attempt to save Aniu one month ago.

As she entered he stood and walked over to her. “Hey Aleu, back from guard duty?” He asked.

Aleu yawned and nodded. “…and ready to go to sleep.” She said. “…I’m awfully tired.”

Shadow smiled and led her to the corner of the chamber where they laid down next to one another. “…and you…” She said. “…how have you spent your day?”

          “…thinking.” He responded.

“…about when you’re going to step up and take control of the Defense Force again?” Aleu asked. “I talked to Dash today. The job of Alpha is already weighing heavily on him and right now he’s having to do your job as well. It would take some pressure off of him if you stepped in again. …besides, you’d probly feel better if you got out of these chambers and did something.”

Shadow sighed. “I’m not taking over the Defense Force again.” He said.

“…what, why?” Aleu asked. She raised her head from the floor of the chamber to look at him.

“I failed them, utterly and completely, even after losing you… I should have soldiered on, taken over the position of Alpha and led them… at very least I should have been here to comfort our family at your loss… instead I ran away. I cannot in good conscience take over and put myself in that position again.”

“…but they need you.” Aleu said.

“They don’t need me, they need a leader who knows their job and cares for them, not one who abandons them to the enemy.”

Aleu sighed. “Shadow, you’ve got to let this go, get on with life.”

“I will.” Shadow said. “…in time, but not as the leader of our defenses. I will tell Dash tomorrow that I am stepping down and that a replacement will be needed. I will serve the Clan as a lieutenant, nothing higher until I feel I have gotten over this. I know they need another lieutenant with Dash leaving his unit to become Alpha. I’ll take over the First Unit, that will take some stress off of him over finding a replacement.”

Aleu could see in his eyes that there was no use arguing with her mate. He’d made his decision.

“…and add the stress of finding a leader for the entire force.” She said. “…who do you think can replace you.”

“I thought about that.” Shadow said. “…and I think it should be you.”

“…me?” Aleu asked. “..why do you think that?”

Shadow smiled. “I know you Aleu. You won’t be happy as just another member of the Clan. You have to be doing something. You’ll like the break for a month or so, but then you’ll get restless, remember when Saba took over as Alpha?”

Aleu nodded. “Yes, and I guess you’re right, but why me as leader of the Defense Force? I’ve never acted in that capacity before.”

“You’re good with tactics Aleu, and you care about them, you have soldiered on in the face of adversity in the past and I will feel confident in leaving them to you.”

Aleu stared at him for a moment, unsure of what to say.

She looked into his eyes and saw the hurt there, the pain that making this decision was causing him.

The Defense Force had been Shadow’s idea. Back during the first year of Aleu’s tenure as Alpha of the Talbourne, the old wolf Nava had found Shadow roaming the woods alone. Nava’d brought him back to the Clan, then only a smallish pack.  At first Shadow had been very shy and kept to himself, but soon enough he became very active within the clan, quickly rising to become one of the best hunters. His time by himself had left him often intruding on other pack’s territory to hunt for himself, and this had led to him being involved in his fair share of scraps over his infringement. As a result he was a very accomplished fighter as well. He had a mind for security, for what was required to keep the clan safe. Soon he realized a need for the Talbourne to protect it’s Alpha. He’d spoken to both Nava and Aleu herself on this matter and been granted permission to create the Defense Force, though it only numbered ten wolves and on unit, led by Shadow, at that time. He’d taught the ten wolves to fight and survive on their own in case the circumstance ever arose that they would need to do so. The wolves of the Defense Force started standing one guard post outside the small cave the pack had inhabited then. They were a unit separate from the responsibilities of the rest of the clan. Their only job was to fight off anyone who threatened the clan, or more importantly, the Alpha, Aleu. Not long after that several packs heard of the Talbourne’s existence and their loyalty to Aniu. As a result they joined the Talbourne, increasing both the Clan’s size and territory. As time went on and the Clan grew, the Defense Force grew right with it. The Force was Shadow’s baby, he cared for all the wolves in it as his own children. For him to make the decision to leave them would have been very difficult indeed.

This was the other thing Aleu saw in her mate’s eyes. The resolve that this was the correct plan of action.”

Finally Aleu sighed. “…alright Shadow.” She said. “I suppose if I can lead a clan I can lead a Defense Force.”

Shadow nodded. “It will also place you second in command to Dash. That way you’ll be able to council him as he feels out his new position.”

Aleu nodded. “I’d already told him I’d be available for that purpose.”

Shadow sighed and Aleu could see in his eyes a sense of relief that his Defense Force would be in good paws… but she could also see a grief in his gaze that was matched only by the one he’d worn those long weeks that she had been absent from this world.

Shadow sighed again and laid his head down as well. “…now I’m tired.” He said. “…guess we should go to sleep.”

Aleu nodded. “…guess so.” She said. She wished that she could assuage the pain her mate felt, but she knew there was nothing she could do. She laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. …soon, both of them were fast asleep, both their minds troubled with thoughts of the future.

          Timbre sighed.

          He was tired.

The responsibilities of the Lieutenant’s of the Defense Force had grown in intensity steadily ever since the first attack by Lytion and the Shadow Clan. Things had not gotten easier after the Shadow Clan’s defeat either. Though the Talbourne had won the battle thanks to Aniu, it had still taken an awful toll on the numbers of the Force. Nearly half the Clan had been killed or wounded in the first attack by Lytion and his clan and still more in the weeks that followed. Now the units were grossly under-manned and the fourth unit didn’t even have a Lieutenant leading them. Timbre and Ami had taken it in turn to lead them on the days when they were on duty. Weeks of pulling double shifts had left Timbre exhausted to the point he could hardly be recognized as efficient in even his original duty as Lieutenant of Second Unit, much less the extra ones that he had been forced to take on by the lack of wolves in the force.

          He sighed.

The Talbourne was sucking up more and more of his time everyday, and this did nothing to help the situation at home. Melody was growing increasingly angry with the leadership of the Clan for making him do all these extra duties, and she always thought he should be able to do something about it. She didn’t understand the idea of rank or chain of command at all.

Timbre turned and stepped into his chambers. Melody was already there.

          “Timbre, you’re home.” She said.

          Timbre nodded.

“…you’re late.” She said, walking over to him. “I was getting worried about you.”

Timbre sighed. “We got attacked again on our patrol today. Same thing, a few injuries, no deaths… then the wolves broke contact and ran away. I’m beginning to wonder what they think they’re going to accomplish with these attacks. They don’t seem to have a purpose.”

Melody nodded. “Well at least you’re okay, and you’re off tomorrow. I thought we could go for a walk, take it easy, we haven’t done that in a long...”

Timbre cut her off. “I was off.” He said.

Melody’s eyes flashed. “…what is it now?” She asked.

Timbre sighed and sat down. “...Fourth Unit is on security detail tomorrow, and because of the attacks Dash wants someone there to lead them in the event these wolves try a real attack on the Clan.”

Melody shook her head. “…damnit!” she yelled. “Can’t we ever get anytime alone? …just one freaking day!” She sighed and stopped talking for amoment, then looked back up at him. “…can’t Ami cover tomorrow?”

Timbre shook his head. “She was on guard with them today and Patrol with her own unit the day before… she’s more exhausted than I am.”

Melody shook her head. “…did you talk to Dash?”

Timbre sighed. “…of course I did… but there’s not much I can say. He’s the Alpha. I have to do as he says.”

Melody scowled. “I thought he was your friend.” She said.

Timbre sighed and looked at the ceiling of the cave. “He is.” Timbre said. “…but he’s the Alpha first.”

“Well that’s just sorry.” Melody said. “He should understand what all is being placed on you two.”

“He does.” Timbre said. “You just don’t understand how the system works.”

“Oh so now it’s my fault?” Melody snapped.

Timbre sighed. “Melody, I really don’t want to talk about this now, and I certainly don’t want to argue with you. I’m really tired.”

“Well far be it from me to care about my family!” Melody yelled.

“Please don’t yell.” Timbre said. “The other wolves don’t need to hear about this.”

“Oh yes they do!” Melody yelled. “They should all know how he’s treating you two… like freaking slaves!”

Timbre sighed and walked to the corner. “If you’re going to keep yelling I’m going to sleep. I’m tired and I have to wake up early in the morning.”

He laid down and closed his eyes.

Melody walked over to him. “I’m beginning to wonder if you care about this at all.” She said. “You’re so freaking calm it’s like you volunteered.”

          “I did.” Timbre said.

“What the hell?” Melody said. “…why’d you do that?”

Timbre sighed.  “…because I told you Ami is beat. She’s been as busy, if not busier than I have been.”

“Well I don’t see her taking any of your duties.” Melody said. “What’s wrong with her?”

Timbre sighed and shook his head, anger growing in his own mind now. “Listen!” He said sharply. “Ami is a fresh Lieutenant with little to no experience and she’s pulling more than her weight in the teams. Times are hard right now, I can’t leave and it’s no one’s fault but my own for accepting the position in the first place. Stop getting mad at everyone and just deal with it.”

Melody looked at him for a long while. Then she turned and walked briskly out of the chamber.

Timbre sighed. “At least I can get some sleep.” He thought. Then he laid his head back down and closed his eyes. It wasn’t long before he was sleeping soundly.

Dash had finally managed to get away from the meeting he’d called with his two Lieutenants. He could tell that they were both exhausted, and he felt badly about working them so hard, but he also knew there was no alternative available at the moment. Ami in particular was extremely tired. He could see it in her stance, not only physically, but mentally as well. He sighed and stepped into his chambers where June was waiting for him. “Hey you.” He said with a smile.

June smiled back. “So the Alpha of the clan finally found some time for little ole me huh?” She said.

          Dash nodded. “…sure did.”

June walked over to him and sat beside him.

“So… I’ve been thinking today and…” Dash looked up at his mate. “Now that the kids are all grown up and in their own chambers… if you want to have pups of your own..” Dash stopped there, unsure of quite how to phrase his statement.

June sighed. “I… I don’t think that’s a good idea Dash.” She said.

Dash frowned. “…why not?” He asked. “I figured you’d like the idea.”

June sighed again. “It’s just…” She paused for a moment, as if thinking. “It’s just bad timing is all.” She said. “You’re so busy right now…”

Dash nodded. “Well yeah, I am, but you’re not. You could stay with them.”

June shook her head. “I just don’t think it’s a good idea.” She said.

Dash looked at her. He could tell she was hiding something from the way she spoke, but what… and why? “It just seems like ever since we decided to become mates I’ve been too busy with the pack to take care of you properly. I mean we haven’t umm…” Dash stopped, again unsure of quite how to word what he had in mind to say.

June nodded. “I know Dash and I know you’re busy.” She smiled. “I knew you would be when I decided to be your mate.”

Dash nodded. “…still, I want to be with you.”

June sighed and nodded. “Well… it’ll happen when the time is right.”

Dash looked at her for a moment before he spoke. “…June, is everything alright? …something you need to tell me?”

June quickly shook her head. “No, everything is fine.” She said. “…just fine.”

“It’s just that… we’ve been together for a while now and… you avoided that subject fairly abruptly.”

June sighed. “Dash, I love you, and…” She paused for a moment and then continued. “…and I want to be with you too, but… the time is just awful, what with you being so busy and all.”

Dash nodded. The last thing he wanted to do now that he’d found some time to be with June was argue with her, so he let the subject drop, but filed it away for later. He was sure that there was something she wasn’t telling him. “…maybe you’re right.” He said. “…so I talked to Aleu today… she’s not taking over as Alpha again.” He said. “She said I was doing a good job and that she wants me to continue.”

June nodded. “I was afraid that was going to happen.”

Dash looked surprised. “You saw it coming?”

June nodded. “Well you are doing a good job. You led us through a really tough time, and with no experience or turnover… that’s not something that just anyone can do.”

Dash smiled. “Thanks June.” He said. “I’m getting used to the idea… still afraid I’m going to let everyone down… but I guess that’s part of it.”

June nodded. “The important thing is that you’re not telegraphing your doubts to the rest of the Clan anymore.”

Dash nodded. “That doesn’t do anyone any good.”

June nodded. “You’ll always have doubts, but as the leader you have to keep them to yourself and not let them influence your decisions.”

Dash chuckled. “…listen to you.” He said. “You’d think you’d done it before, how do you know so much.”

June smiled and nuzzled him. “I know everything, don’t you know that by now?”

Dash laughed. “Yeah, I guess I should heh heh.”

It was quiet for a moment and June led him to the corner where they both laid down.

“…guess I’m going to have to learn to share you now hm?” June asked. A smile creeping across her muzzle.

“…guess so.” Dash said. “…especially if these attacks keep coming…”

June nodded. “…ever figure out anything about them?”

          Dash shook his head.

          “…not even who they are?”

Dash shook his head again. “…nope. They hit us fast, inflict a few injuries and pull back before we can mount a response… it’s strange… and it worries me.”

          “Why’s that?” June asked.

“…because if they attacked us and took a few casualties themselves before pulling back it would send a clear meaning, a meaning of war, of their intenion to take us on as a Clan… with this… I’m not sure what their motive is… what they hope to gain.”

June nodded. “Maybe they’re just trying to get us scared… so that when they attack for real it will work better.”

Dash shook his head. “…that’s not it… because it has the opposite effect. It makes us aware of their presence, strengthens our guard and puts us on the look out for them. They’d be better served by attacking the cave out of nowhere, with us unaware of their existence.”

June nodded. “..guess I don’t know everything heh heh.”

Dash laughed. “…well you haven’t had much experience as a tactition, so that’s to be expected.”

June nodded and laid her head on his shoulder. “Dash… I…” She fell silent and just nuzzled him.

“…what is it June?” Dash asked.

June sighed and paused to consider her words. “…about what you were talking about earlier… I just… I want you to know that I do love you. I just…” She sighed.

Dash smiled and licked her nose. “…don’t worry about it June.” He said. “I know you love me and I love you too… if you think it’s a bad time, then I’ll go with that.”

June smiled. “Thanks Dash.” She said. “…I do love you you know.”

Dash nodded. “I know.” He said.

          June yawned.

Dash smiled and laid his head on her neck. “…you look tired.” He said.

June nodded. “I am.” She said. “…went out with the hunters today. It was a good one, got four deer, enough to feed us for the day anyway, but it was a lot of running, and then I stayed up waiting for you, so…”

Dash smiled and nodded. “I know, I’m sorry I was so late. It’s jut… I had to talk to my lieutenants. I feel really badly about their schedules right now… I know that they’re really harsh.”

June nodded. “…but I think they understand that there’s no better way.”

Dash nodded. “…they do, but their mates are a different story, or at least Timbre’s is.”

June sighed. “…is Melody still giving him a hard time?”

Dash nodded. “…apparently so. Ami had been on duty for two days already… and she was going to volunteer to take Fourth Unit out tomorrow morning, but Timbre wouldn’t let her.”

June nodded. “…well after two days she must have been tired.”

Dash nodded. “…two days consecutively is routine these days.”

          June nuzzled his shoulder.

“I just wish that I could give him what he wants.” Dash said. “He’s served the Clan with loyalty and distinction for many years, at least as long as I have, and he deserves it, but there’s no one available to replace him and we need his experience at the moment.”

June nodded. “I’m sure he knows that.”

Dash nodded. “I think he does too, but he still asks a lot.”

“That’s probly Melody talking.” She said.

Dash nodded. “I know it is.” He said. “I’d go talk to her; I mean, she is my sister and all, but I’ve done that once before as a Lieutenant and it didn’t do any good. I doubt much would change just because I’m Alpha now.”

          June nodded.

“Melody has never been one to accept authority very well.” He continued. “Even we were pups growing up in Nome if mom or dad told her something and it didn’t serve her purpose she’d ignore it… she’s stubborn that way.”

          June smiled. “…and you’re not?”

Dash laughed. “…well maybe a little.” He said.

June smiled. “…stubbornness can turn into perseverance, and that’s a good thing… she’s just got to learn to pick her battles, which ones she can’t win.”

Dash laughed. “I doubt if that will ever happen.” He said.

          “It might.” June said.

Dash nodded. “…anything’s possible I suppose.”

June nodded. “Yes it is.” She said.

Dash snuggled close to her. He could hear her heart beating against his ears and he longed to ask her what was wrong? …what she couldn’t talk to him about, but he didn’t. He didn’t want to argue with her tonight, and it would probably take a good long talk to get her to divulge whatever it was she had hidden deep inside her. So he just closed his eyes and let it go, for the moment. He knew that this wasn’t a permanent solution. Whatever it was, if it affected her this deeply he needed to know it, but silence was a temporary fix, and so he just silently drifted to sleep.

A few moments of silence went by before June turned her eyes to her mate’s face. “…Dash?” She asked. Then she saw his eyes closed and smiled, licking his shoulder and snuggling close. She sighed. “…damn you Dalchei.” She said softly. “…Aniu damn you to hell.” She closed her eyes and soon she too was fast asleep.

Chapter 3

Ami had just made it to her temporary chambers as Corporal of the Guard. Fourth Unit had just returned from patrol with Timbre and she had to inform them that Timbre was taking charge of them as interior guards tomorrow morning. She was grateful that Timbre had volunteered to take her place tomorrow. Though she had volunteered first, she was exhausted. She’d handled her own unit on interior guard today and taken them out on patrol the day before. While the days on guard were fairly easy for the Lieutenants, they left little time for sleep, something she desperately needed. She felt like she was going to fall over by the time she made it back to the Corporal of the Guard’s Chambers. Nick was waiting inside. He was sleeping soundly and she smiled. She could hardly blame him. Already the next day had come. She sighed as she realized she would have to be up early this morning to turn over interior guard to Fourth Unit and Timbre. She felt sorry for Timbre. She knew that Melody was giving him a hard time about the amount of time that he spent away from her. That was why she’d volunteered, even though she was so tired. She looked over at Nick sleeping in the corner of the chamber and silently thanked Aniu that he was so accepting of her duties. It was the difference of him having served himself she imagined. He understood the way the system worked, Melody did not.

Ami walked over and almost collapsed beside her mate, snuggling close to him, feeling the heat that radiated from his body warm her almost instantly. She laid her head on his shoulder and smiled, sleeping into a deep and very fitful sleep almost instantly.

In his chambers Dash was sleeping, but not well. He kicked his legs from time to time, almost striking June who was sleeping soundly beside him, her muzzle buried in his neck. His eyelids would flutter from time to time as if on the verge of opening, and he muttered intelligible words under his breath.

          Suddenly, Dash opened his eyes.

He looked around him and found he was inside a cave, but not the one he’d fallen asleep in. His first reaction was one of alarm. He leapt to his paws and scanned the room. “…June!?” He called.

          “Fear not my child.”

Dash instantly felt his fears replaced by a warmth that surpassed any he’d ever felt. All at once he was not afraid. He turned to look behind him and saw a great white wolf standing there.

Instantly he dropped, his muzzle pointed at the floor.

The white wolf smiled. “…rise my child, such formalities mean little to me.”

Dash turned his head to face the wolf, but did not stand.

“…but you’re… you’re…” He stuttered, unable to find the words.

The white wolf chuckled. “…yes my child, I am Aniu.”

Dash rose shakily to his feet. “…how?” He asked.

“This place is a middle ground, a place where we may speak without me violating the rules that have been set forth by he who is above me. I have been sent to you at his word to warn you.”

          “…me?” Dash asked.

Aniu nodded. “…you are the Alpha of my Clan are you not?”

          Dash nodded shakily.

Aniu nodded back. “…very well, then it is to you that I must speak. Evil once again threatens to swallow my clan, and you with it. I cannot go into details, for I have been forbidden. I am only able to tell you that you must watch all those around you very carefully, for something evil is rising within my Clan.”

Dash nodded. “I will Aniu.” He said. He turned his gaze away from her and continued to shake as he stood.

“…what are you doing my child?” Aniu asked.

“…looking away.” He said. “…I am not worthy to gaze upon your face.”

Aniu smiled and walked toward him. The chains that had imprisoned her in hell still hung from her flanks and they scraped the floor as she moved. “Do not do such a thing my child.” Aniu said. “I too was mortal once. It is only through the grace of he who is above me that I am in this standing now. I am nothing special, simply a servant of he, as are you.”

Dash slowly looked back at her, his expression one of pure disbelief.

“Dash, heed my words, guard the Clan and it’s safety with your life. Should they fall my voice in the world will be gone, and with my voice also goes he who is above me. If this happens all the animal kingdom will be abandoned to Shade and his evil whims. You must find this evil and extinguish it, at any and all costs. If left unchecked it threatens to destroy everything we have fought and suffered for.”

Dash nodded. “I will Aniu.” He said.

Aniu nodded. “I am afraid my time is short and I must return you to your world shortly, but before I do, heed these words. You must not doubt yourself Dash, for I am leading you in each step through every day as he who is above me will allow. You are never alone Dash, remember that, and second… remember your family. They are important as well. Take care of them, and they will take care of you.”

          Dash nodded.

“…through faith will all of us be set free.” She said. “…please listen and take to heart what has been said here. Never give up on yourself, and most importantly never give up on my Clan. I have chosen you as Alpha because you are more than qualified, trust in that, in me, and everything will work out fine.”

          Dash nodded.

“Before you go, there is someone who I think needs to tell you something…”

Aniu closed her eyes and a blue portal appeared beside her. Out of the portal stepped…

          “…it can’t be.” Dash said.

He promptly fell to the floor of the cave, unable to stand any longer.

          “Hello Dash.”

Dash’s eyes instantly filled with tears. “…Shasta?” He asked.

The glowing figure nodded. “Yes, it is me.”

Dash looked at her and his jaw quivered as he fought back his emotions.

“My time is very short Dash. I want only to say that I have been watching you, and I am glad to see that you have moved on, that you are happy, and that you have a companion. Take care of her Dash. I know you sense something is not right. I am here to tell you to follow your heart.” She smiled. “…it’s never led you wrong before.”

          Dash nodded and stood.

“…is… is it really you?” He asked.

She nodded. “…it is Dash.” She said. “…and sometime in the future we will be together again, but until that day, stay committed to June and your relationship with her. She needs you as much as you need her.”

Dash nodded and swallowed back the majority of his tears. “…I love you… Shasta.” He said.

Shasta smiled and stepped forward, nuzzling him. “…and I you.” She whispered.

Dash closed his eyes as he felt her fur against his cheek… then she disappeared and it was only he and Aniu once more.

“…and now I must return you my child.” Aniu said. “…take care of my clan.”

With that the Great Aniu unfurled her beautiful blue wings and a white light seemed to emanate from her very core.

Dash was struck dumb as it was the most beautiful sight he could ever recall seeing.

          Then all was black.

Dash opened his eyes and looked around.

He was back in the cave. June slept soundly beside him.

His heart pounded in his chest so hard that he was afraid it would wake June. He’d heard Aleu tell stories of being visited by Aniu, but never had she come to see him. The encounter left him somewhat afraid, yet strengthened with a resolve he found surprising, a strength that he had not had before. He looked down at June and remembered seeing Shasta in the cave, feeling her against him once again.

He smiled and nuzzled the wolf beside him.

“I don’t know what has hurt you so deeply my love.” He whispered. “…but I will find out, and I’ll help you get past it.”

He licked her cheek and June stirred slightly.

Dash smiled and laid his head across her neck.

The silver moon cast a deep blue shadow on the fallen snow as a shadowy figure stepped outside the Talbourne Cave’s back entrance. The figure knew that it should have been asleep, preparing for the day ahead, and yet, something was more important than sleep at this moment. The figure had been very careful to avoid being detected by the wolf assigned to guard the back entrance, but it had turned out to be a wasted effort, the young wolf lay slumped against the wall of the entrance chamber, soundly sleeping.

The figure darted through the woods, keeping low to avoid being seen against the snow. Once the figure was sure that it had escaped detection and was beyond the scope of the Talbourne guards it stood up and quickly ran to a clearing nearby. It stood outside the same outcropping of rocks and repeated it’s phrase from before.

          “…for change.” It said.

The same three wolves walked out from the shadows of the rocks. “…were you detected?” The lead wolf asked.

The figure shook it’s head and smiled. “…guard was asleep, not a chance he saw me.”

The lead wolf nodded. “…great, what do you have to report?”

The figure sighed. “…much as I hate to see it happen I am coming to realize that for my family to be safe the current Alpha must be put down. You have kept your part of the bargain, once more only injuries reported in the skirmishes today.”

The wolf nodded. “…so have we proven ourselves? …have you found your resolve?”

The figure nodded. “Yes you have, and yes, I have. The situation in the Talbourne is only getting worse. You have my cooperation.”

The figure nodded and smiled. “…very well.” He said. “…what is to be done then?”

“…you’ll have to strike the Alpha, I am too close to him.” The figure said.

The wolf nodded again. “..we were planning on that, when?”

The figure sighed. “…that’s the hard part. He’s hardly ever outside the cave, and when he is he doesn’t announce the fact. It may take some time.”

The wolf shook his head. “…we don’t have time my friend.” He said. “Our clan starves as we speak from lack of hunting ground. Perhaps we can take him inside the cave.”

The figure shook it’s head. “…you’d never make it out alive. There are many accomplished fighters in the cave and the Alpha would be sure to make some noise… not to mention he’s a very good fighter himself.”

“Then what do you suggest my friend?” The wolf said. “My patience thins as I watch my clan suffer.”

The figure nodded. “I’ll see if I can arrange to have Dash come out of the cave somehow… and get back to you with the details.”

The wolf nodded. “…and how long will this take?” He asked.

“…give me one day.” The figure said.

The wolf nodded. “…if when the week is out you have not delivered him to us we take him ourselves… and our deal is forfeit, understand?”

The figure nodded. “…it will not take that long, this I swear to you.”

The wolf nodded. “…see that it doesn’t. I have no patience for incompetence. The safety of your family hangs in the balance either way.”

          The figure nodded.

“…until tomorrow then.” The wolf said.

The figure nodded again. “…until tomorrow.” It said.

With that the three wolves blended back into the darkness and the shadowy figure turned and raced back toward the cave, anxious to get some sleep.

The figure did not see the startled young wolf in the bushes, nor did it hear him as he turned and fled the clearing as fast as his legs could take him.

          Dash opened his eyes.

There was a sound outside his chamber, the scrabbling of claws on rock, the sound of someone outside. He rose to his paws and looked down at June, his breathing quickening, his heart thudding once more as adrenaline surged into his system, readying his body for a fight, were there to be one on the other side of the chamber.

He walked quietly to the chamber entrance and jumped back as he saw a shadowy form standing there.

“It’s alright Dash, it’s just me.” The figure said.

Dash let out an audible sigh of relief. “Aleu… what brings you here in the middle of the night.” He said. “You nearly caused me to have a heart attack.”

Aleu nodded. “Sorry Dash, but we were trying to be quiet.”

          “…we?” Dash asked.

Aleu nodded and turned her head to the right. “…come forward and tell Dash what you heard.” She said.

A young wolf stepped out of the darkness. His legs were shaking.

          “…what is it?” Dash asked.

“My Alpha I am with Second Unit. I was assigned the duty of guarding the rear entrance.” The wolf looked down at the floor and sighed. “I must report that I was nearly asleep when I heard someone coming. The wolf did not announce themselves, so I remained lying down and closed my eyes, thinking that the wolf was up to something. When they left, I followed them.”

“…you left your post?” Dash asked.

The wolf nodded slowly. “Yes My Alpha, I did… but I did so only to…”

Dash cut the young wolf off. “I don’t care about why and I’m not interested in excuses, continue.”

The young wolf sighed and nodded. “…yes My Alpha.” He said. “I followed the wolf to a clearing outside the range of our guards. I didn’t get close for fear that the wolf would spot me. The wolf said something and three other wolves stepped out of an outcropping of rocks nearby. The wolf from our clan talked to them, but I could not discern exactly what was being said, only bits and pieces. I snuck a bit closer so that I could hear and I caught the end of their conversation.”

“…what were they saying?” Dash asked.

The wolf paused. “…well My Alpha… the wolf from our Clan intends to betray you to them.”

Dash’s eyes snapped open wide at this. “…and who was this traitor?” He asked.

The wolf sighed. “I do not know My Alpha. I did not get close enough to be able to give you even an accurate description.”

Dash nodded. “…very well.” He said. “Thank you for this information. You were right to follow the wolf. However, do you know of the consequences of falling asleep on post?”

The wolf sighed and nodded. “I do.” He said.

Dash paused and thought about it for a moment. “…taking into account what you have told me I will not inform Ami of this breech in security, but see to it that such a thing never happens again.”

The wolf nodded quickly. “I will never fall asleep on post again My Alpha.”

Dash nodded. “See that you don’t.”

Dash nodded at Aleu and turned around, looking back into his chambers at June, who was still sleeping.

Aleu turned to the young wolf. “…you’re dismissed.” She said. “…return to your post.”

The young wolf nodded and turned, almost running from the chamber.

Dash turned back to face Aleu. “So that’s what she meant.” He said.

          “…she?” Aleu asked.

Dash nodded. “Aniu visited me tonight.”

A surprised look crossed Aleu’s face. “…Aniu?” She asked. “…is she alright?”

Dash nodded. “She seemed to be.”

“…what did she tell you?” Aleu asked.

“Not much…” Dash said. “…only that a great evil threatened to swallow her clan, and me with it.”

Aleu nodded. “…seems she was trying to warn you of this plot.”

Dash nodded. “…it does.” He said. “It’s too bad the guard didn’t see who the traitor was… it would make dealing with this situation much easier.”

Aleu nodded. “Dash, you’re going to find that things in this job are rarely easy.”

Dash nodded. “Well, I’ll have to think this over.”

Aleu nodded. “…be careful Dash, whoever those wolves that the traitor met were they sound desperate.”

Dash nodded. “…they must be to try to get one of our oAleu wn to betray us.” He sighed. “…well at least now we know the meaning of the skirmishes that have been happening lately.”

Aleu nodded. “…what do you want to do?”

Dash sighed. “I don’t know, wait I guess.” He said. “There is little we can do.”

Aleu nodded and it was quiet for a moment.

Finally it was she who spoke. “I’m sorry for scaring you Dash, but we both thought it best if you knew of this plot right away.”

Dash nodded. “You did the right thing Aleu.”

Aleu smiled. “Thank you.” She said.

Dash sighed. “Well, I’m going to get back to sleep… the clan has been informed of the meeting tomorrow.”

Aleu nodded. “…then we’ll make it official tomorrow evening. There is something else I need to talk to you about Dash.” Aleu said.

          “What’s that?” He asked.

“Shadow does not intend to reclaim his place as leader of the Defense Force. He feels he failed them by running away.”

Dash sighed. “…great, who am I supposed to get to replace him?”

Aleu smiled. “…well, he wants me to do it… and I suppose he’s right.”

Dash nodded. “…you’d be great at it, but I thought you wanted the easy life.”

Aleu smiled. “Well, my mate knows me better than I do myself. He says I’ll get restless after a while, and he’s probably right. This will give me something to do within the clan while not having to shoulder the responsibilities of being the Alpha.”

Dash nodded. “I agree with him.” He said. “We’ll make that official tomorrow as well.”

          Aleu nodded.

“Well, I better get back to June.” Dash said. “…take care Aleu.”

Aleu nodded. “…you too Dash.” She said. Then she turned and walked away.

Dash sighed and turned, walking back into the cave, his mind spinning as he searched for possible culprits in this plot. Two wolves came to mind immediately and Dash sighed again. Then he laid down beside June, sliding close to her.

          Timbre opened his eyes.

Melody still slept soundly beside him.

He yawned and stretched out as much as he could without waking her. He was still tired, even after getting some sleep the night before. He hadn’t slept well. Timbre was worried, but he thought that anyone in his position would be. He looked at Melody and sighed, then he licked her gently on the cheek and stood up. Fourth Unit would be waiting for him to take them out on their first patrol.

He stretched again and groaned, wishing he could curl up beside Melody and sleep for a week. He guessed he probably could if he were given the time.

He looked up and silently said the prayer to Aniu he said every morning.

He asked her simply to let him come back alive.

Then he turned and walked out of the chamber to begin the new day.

          Dash sighed.

It was early in the day and already he was tired.

There’d been another attack today, still only a light battle and then a quick withdrawal by the attackers before any real damage could be done. At least now he understood why. They were trying to draw him out, believing that if he fell they would be free to step in and take over the Talbourne and its territory. In truth Dash had been afraid something like this would happen. The attacks by Lytion had left many of the packs surrounding the Talbourne decimated and unable to recover. As the Talbourne was the strongest and held the most territory of any wolf clan in Alaska it only made sense that the beleaguered wolves would try to take something from them.

Dash had just returned from seeing to the wounded. None of them were serious, and all would be fine in a few days, still… it bothered Dash that they had to suffer for his sake.

          He sighed.

“…guess that’s part of being Alpha.” He thought.

Dash heard someone running to catch up to him. He stopped and turned around.

          “Hey Melody.” He said.

“…hey bro.” She said. “…how are you?”

          He sighed. “…been better, you?”

“I guess I’m alright.” She said. Melody chuckled. “…not like anyone would listen if I complained anyway.”

          Dash smiled and nodded.

“…hey Dash, think you could come with me tomorrow?”

Dash sighed. “…perhaps, depends on my schedule, why, what’s up?”

“…nothing big.” Melody said. “I just found some good hunting ground, but it’s kind of on the boundry between our territory and another pack’s. From the population of the herds it doesn’t look like anyone has been in there for a while, it’d be easy pickings for us.”

          Dash nodded. “…yes it would.”

“I just wanted to get your approval before I hunted there… to keep from encroaching on the other pack’s territory.”

Dash nodded. “…that’s a good idea.” He said. “…thank you. I’ll try to make some time for it.”

Melody nodded. “Thanks bro.” She said. “…gotta run, hunting party is waiting on me as it is heh heh. I’ll see you later at the meeting.”

Dash nodded. “…good luck.” He said. “…and be careful.”

Melody smiled. “Thanks, you know me heh heh.”

Dash nodded. “Yes I do, which is why I’m going to say it again… be careful. We have enemies out there.”

Melody nodded. “…don’t worry about me bro. I’ll be fine.”

With that she turned and ran back toward the Main Chamber.

Chapter 4:

Later that night every wolf in the Talbourne was gathered in the Main Chamber. They were all awaiting the announcement that Dash would be the new Alpha. Everyone knew that’s why the meeting had been called.

Aleu stood next to Dash on the second shelf of rock above the floor. She looked out over the crowd. “…looks like everyone is here.”

Just then Timbre walked up to them. “…everyone is here Dash.” He said. “…present and accounted for.”

Dash nodded. “…thank you.” He said. He had an odd feeling of déjà-vu as he stood there.

Aleu stepped forward and everyone stopped talking. “Greetings to you all...” She said. “…my brothers and sisters. I have called this meeting to lay to rest any doubt over who is Alpha of this clan. I have led you all for many years, I know many of you by name, and many of you call me friend. I shall never regret those years, nor would I trade them for anything in this world, or the next. However, I am not as young as I once was and those years have begun to catch up to me. Therefore I am stepping down as your Alpha and leaving Dash in my place. Dash has served our clan with absolute loyalty and distinction since the day he decided to give up living as a pet in Nome and join us here in this cave. He started out simply as a soldier within the Defense Force. He quickly proved himself and was made Executive Officer of that unit within his first year. The year after that he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and he has served in that capacity ever since. He is a more than capable and competent leader and he has a sound knowledge and experience with tactics and defense strategies. I believe he cares for this clan just as much as I, and it is with no reservations whatsoever that I abdicate my position to him. I expect each one of you to follow him as loyally and as totally as you have followed me.”

She turned and smiled. “…Dash, I know you’ve already done this, but will you please step forward.

Dash stepped up next to her.

“Please repeat after me.” Aleu said. As she spoke her next words she paused every once and a while to allow Dash to respond.

“I Dash... do solemnly swear to uphold and defend.... all that which the Talbourne stands for... I will never waver in judgment... but will be decisive in insuring that justice... is brought to the members of this clan. I know that the forces of evil... are constantly plotting our downfall... and will work with diligence... and perseverance... to insure this does not happen... I will be ever mindful... of the needs of the members of this clan... and will strive to insure they are met... I will provide for them... before myself... I will never abandon my clan... even if faced with certain death... I will strive... to be an example... for others to emulate... I accept this charge... willingly and without coercion... so be it.... until either I... or this world passes away into the night... and we be joined with Aniu forever… This I so swear by the blood of Aniu herself."

Dash repeated each phrase. Once again his mind slipped back into the past, not too long ago, when he’d thought his sister gone forever.

Aleu smiled. “I hereby name you, Dash, Alpha of the Talbourne.”

She stepped back and left Dash on the shelf. “Thank you Aleu.” He said. “I know that you all have heard me say those words before, what seems like such a long time ago. We were faced with certain destruction then, our faith shaken, our resolve empty. We overcame that threat, together we helped Aniu defeat Lytion and his Shadow Clan. We rose above our tribulations and came out on top and for that I thank you. Though we have defeated our enemy; the fight is not over. Our Clan is still in danger. Many of you have heard of the skirmishes taking place outside the cave each day. I assure you I am working to find out who these wolves are, and what their motive is, so that I may ensure your safety. Aniu herself visited me last night.”

A murmur went through the crowd as a wave at this mention of the Great White Wolf.

“She told me that I needed to have faith. We all say that word each day in our prayers to her, but do we know what it really means? I thought I did, and I found that I was wrong. To have faith is to be sure of something, even when the evidence points the other way, or even is non-existant. We have faith in Aniu, a blind obedience and trust that she will care for us and protect us from the evil that threatens to swallow us each day. I can now say that I do in fact have faith in Aniu. In speaking to her I was filled with a resolve unlike any other I have ever experienced. This clan will not fall. It will not falter and it will not fade into history. We are Aniu’s voice, and we are here to stay.”

          The wolves all cheered.

Dash smiled. “Aniu has told me to trust her, and that is what I will do. Every move I make will be guided by her, so that it is not truly I who lead you, but she through me. Remember this if ever you are called upon to do something that you do not think you can accomplish. Aniu herself calls each of us, and by Aniu we will answer her.”

          The wolves all cheered again.

Dash let this continue for a moment before he held up one paw and the cheering died away.

“Now, many of you know of the difficulties that faced one of our most prominent members, Shadow, in the last months. Due to these difficulties he is stepping down from his position as leader of the Defense Force and taking the position of Lieutenant of First Unit. It has been decided that Aleu will stand in his place.

Dash motioned for Aleu to step forward and she did so.

Aleu, as Leader of our Defense Force you truly represent our first line of defense. I know you will do well as you have proven yourself time and time again as Alpha, both as a diplomat and a warrior. I have complete faith in your ability to carry out the duties that are being assigned to you. I ask you now to take the oath of the office of leader of our Defense Force are you prepared to do this?”

Aleu nodded.  “Yes I am.” She said.

Dash nodded back. “…very well, if you would repeat after me. I, Aleu… do solemnly swear my complete allegiance to the Talbourne and swear to do everything in my power to protect the same. I will forever be diligent in my duties and will strive to do everything tactically possible to ensure the safety of those placed under me. This I swear by the blood of Aniu herself.”

Aleu repeated after Dash and then stood there, silent.

“Aleu, you are hereby named Leader of the Defense Force, effective immediately.”

          She nodded and stepped back.

Dash smiled. “…with that I wish you all good-night and sound sleep. You are dismissed and may return to your chambers.”

The wolves all started to walk away, all of them talking. Their voices filled the chamber like a great rushing wave.

Aleu excused herself and went down to the members of the Defense Force still waiting to be dismissed by their new leader.

Dash looked out over the crowd of wolves and where once he had felt unsure and afraid he now felt confident and strong.

Timbre walked up to Dash then. “Hey Dash, got a minute?” He asked.

Dash nodded and walked down to his friend. “What’s up buddy?” He asked.

Timbre sighed. “I… hate to bother you right now, but I was scouting the guard positions when I came up from patrol earlier and I’ve found a few that I think we should move to a more tactically sound position. I wanted your input before I did it though.”

Dash nodded. “…alright, but that’s Aleu’s job now. You should talk to her.”

Timbre nodded. “I know, but I think that you should come and check them out. Aleu will be busy in the next few days and I think this needs to happen as soon as possible.”

Dash nodded. “Alright, let’s go then.”

Timbre shook his head. “I can’t right now. I’ve got to take Fourth Unit out on another patrol, but I’ll be free tomorrow.”

Dash nodded. “Alright, tomorrow then, just come and get me.”

Timbre nodded. “…sure thing.” He said.

He turned and left Dash standing at the base of the shelf.

June walked up to him then, a smile on her face. “…so, my mate, the Alpha of the Talbourne.”

Dash smiled. “…not like anything’s changed.” He said.

June shook her head. “…oh but something definitely has.” She said.

          “…what’s that?” Dash asked.

June nuzzled him. “…you.” She said. “You’re so much more confident now… I’m very proud of you.”

Dash smiled and looked around the chamber. “While everyone is distracted what do you say we try to dodge them and make it up to our chambers?”

June smiled. “…loving it already.” She said.

The two of them turned and walked quickly into the crowd of wolves, disappearing in a sea of moving bodies.

Dash and June were laughing as they sat in their chamber.

“…you’re too funny Dash.” She said. “…didn’t you know your own Lieutenant?”

Dash chuckled. “…well it was dark, and he didn’t answer my challenge. …it was probly quiet as a mouse anyway. It was my first time on guard duty and I was sure some possessed wolverine was going to leap out of the bushes and tear me apart.”

          June started laughing again.

Dash smiled. “Though I do have to say it was pretty interesting to see his face when I pounced on him ha ha.”

June couldn’t stop laughing. “…I’d have spent a day on duty to see that.” She said finally.

Dash smiled. “…learned a lot since then.”

June smiled. “Yes you have. Did you ever think you’d be Alpha?”

Dash grinned and shook his head. “…not in my wildest nightmares.”

June started laughing again and Dash nuzzled her. “It’s good to spend some time with you for once.” He said.

June nodded. “Yeah, it is.” She said.

Dash sighed. “…June, there’s something we need to talk about. ….about the other night… I can sense it.”

          June sighed and looked away.

“I want to help you.” Dash said. “I can see that something has hurt you in the past… and as your mate I need to know what it was.”

June looked at him and shook her head. “…nothing’s wrong Dash.” She said.

Dash looked in her eyes and they betrayed her instantly. “June, please don’t lie to me.” He said. “I can tell that something is wrong.”

“Can we just not talk about it Dash?” She asked. “…please?”

Dash shook his head. “…much as I would like to do that just to make you happy I can’t. When we decided to be mates we entered into a partnership, We’re a team, and I can’t be a good part of that team unless I know what is bothering you.”

June sighed. “Dash please… let’s just drop it. It’s not important.”

“…sure it is.” Dash said. “If it’s affected you so deeply that you don’t even want to talk about it then it’s very important.”

          June sighed. “…please Dash…”

Dash cut her off. “…no June. I’m not going to stop asking you until you tell me. It’s my job to protect you… how can I do that if you don’t trust me?”

June sighed and shook her head. “I do trust you Dash.” She said.

          “…then tell me.” Dash said.

June shook her head. “…it’s not that I don’t trust you. I just really don’t want to  talk about it.”

          Dash shook his head. “…June…”

          “…just drop it!” June yelled.

Dash leaned back from her, a surprised and somewhat hurt look on his face.

June sighed. “Dash…” she took a deep breath. “Dalchei just wasn’t the nice guy you think he was.”

A second look of surprise crossed his face.  “…what do you mean?” He asked.

“…he…” June sighed. “…he used to… to hit me all the time when you guys would come back from patrol all right? Can we stop talking about it now?”

Dash nuzzled her. “…I’m sorry June.” He said. “…I had no idea

A tear came to June’s eye. “…no one did.” She said. “…he used to say if I told anyone he’d kill me, so I didn’t talk about it.”

Dash nodded. “…well… what does that have to do with…”

“He’d force himself on me alright?!” June yelled. “…are you happy now? I didn’t want to do anything with him because my father was the same way and he used to force himself on me anyway alright?”

Dash was speechless, unsure of what to say in response to this revelation. “…your father?” He asked.

June nodded. “You know he was banished from the clan right?”

Dash nodded. “…yeah, for falling asleep on post.”

June shook her head. “…that’s just what Aleu and Shadow said to protect me. He was… more friendly with me than he should have been… and they banished him for it. That’s why I was such a loner and only hung out with the girls alright? When I met Dalchei he seemed so nice that I thought maybe he was different, but he wasn’t, and he’d hurt me on top of everything.”

Dash shook his head. “I’m… I’m really sorry June.”

“Well you wanted to know, now you do, help any?” She asked.

Dash sighed. “June… you have to know that I wouldn’t hurt you… ever.”

June sighed. “I know Dash, but… the past has taught me that I’ve been wrong before… I’m just...” She sighed. “This subject tore Dalchei and I apart… I just don’t want it to happen again.”

Dash nuzzled her and licked the tears from her face. “…it’s alright June. I’ll never do anything like that to you… ever.”

June nodded. “…still, the subject scares me… when Dalchei would…” She paused for a moment. “..when he would do what he did all I remember is being hurt and afraid, afraid that he would decide that I might tell someone and he’d kill me. That’s what I associate with that alright? …I just… I don’t want to have to deal with those memories again. It’s in the past and I want it to stay there.”

Dash nodded. “I understand June, but you can’t. You have to deal with this or it’s going to eat you alive for the rest of your life.”

          June sighed.

Dash scooted close to her and nuzzled her neck. “June, what Dalchei did to you… it was wrong. …but it doesn’t mean that everyone is like that.”

June nodded. “I know that Dash. I just… that subject scares me. It reminds me of huddling in the corner of my chamber afraid that he would come home early and have the time to do… that to me.”

Dash nodded and smiled, nuzzling her. “…well you know… we could make it remind you of something else… of what it should mean to you.”

          “…and what’s that?” June asked.

Dash leaned over and kissed her neck, nuzzling her gently. “…of the fact I love you, and you love me. That’s what it’s supposed to mean. That we’re mates, one body, one heart, and one soul.”

June sighed. “…and that I’m second best.” She said. “…like I always am.”

Dash looked confused. “What are you talking about?” He asked.

June sighed. “Dash… do I really have to explain it?” She asked.

Dash nodded. “I guess you do, because I have no idea what you’re talking about, second best to who?”

June sighed. “Dash, you had a mate before me, and you were happy with her. It’s only because she died that you chose to be with me. Had Steele chosen another target…” She paused and  then sighed again. “I’d just be alone right now, like I always was.”

Dash shook his head. “You’re wrong June.” He said. “you’re not second best.”

June shook her head. “Really Dash, had she not died would you have left her to be with me?”

Dash sighed and shook his head. “No..” He said. “…I’m loyal to my mate. I would still be with her in that case, but that doesn’t mean you’re second best.” He said. “…June… Shasta died… that changed things, I had to move on, you rescued me from my despair. I can’t ever repay you for what you’ve given me. I love you June… just as I loved her, no different.”

June shook her head. “…what if she came back? I know it’s impossible, but say she did…” She paused and sighed. “You’d leave me to be with her. I know you would. You were happy with her.”

Dash shook his head. “You’re wrong June.” He said. “It would be great if she could come back… but I’d have to tell her that I was your mate now, that things were different. …and she would understand.” He paused. I’m happy with you too June.” He said finally.

          June smiled. “Dash… really?”

Dash nodded. “I got to see her the last night.” He said.

          “…Aniu?” June asked.

Dash nodded. “Yes, and she told me she was happy that I had moved on, that I had you for a companion. She told me to take care of you.”

          June smiled and sniffled. “Dash…”

Dash nuzzled her and then licked her nose. “I love you June… nothing that could ever happen would ever change that fact.”

June nuzzled him back and smiled.

“…don’t worry.” Dash said. “You’ll never be alone again, not as long as I am here with you. I’ll never leave you.”

June kissed him. “I love you Dash.” She said.

Dash smiled and kissed her back. “I love you too June.” He said.

It was silent for a moment before June smiled and nuzzled him. “…so you really want to have pups with me?”

Dash nodded. “You’re a fantastic mother. You proved that with our last children.”

June smiled. “Dash… I enjoyed it, I really did. It gave me a feeling unlike any other I’ve ever experienced.”

Dash smiled. “…then why are you so hesitant to do it again?”

She smiled and nuzzled him. “…I guess… I’m not anymore.” She said.

Dash smiled. “Well we still have some time…” He said.

          June smiled and kissed him.

          Dash kissed her back.

It was late that night when Dash slowly opened his eyes and looked around the chamber.  He looked down at June and smiled, nuzzling her softly. He was glad that they had been able to work through her difficult past, though he knew that she would likely still have issues with it, at least now he could help her through them.

He kissed her softly. “…we’re a team June.” He whispered. “Together we can overcome anything that comes our way.”

He stood and walked to the entrance to his chambers.  Then he stopped and turned. He knew that this night could well be his last on Earth if he were caught and if that were true he wanted his last memory to be that of June, lying in his chambers, sleeping soundly.  He turned and walked out of the chamber.

Dash knew that what he was doing was wreckless. He should have taken someone with him, as Alpha he should at least have one wolf accompany him out of the cave, to guard him. …but he had a good idea of who the traitor might be, though his mind struggled to comprehend it. If it was who he feared he didn’t want anyone else to know of the plot, so he hadn’t said a word to anyone about it, not even June.

He had decided to go find out on his own.

It only took Dash a few minutes to make it to the Rear Entrance.

The young wolf standing guard there stood straight up as soon as he saw Dash. “Trius reports the Rear Entrance all secure.” The wolf said. “There is nothing unusual to report at this time my Alpha.”

          Dash nodded.

“Sir, if I could ask, what brings you down here so late?” The wolf asked.

“…special circumstances.” Dash said. “…look, go back to the guard’s chambers and go to sleep, wake your relief when it is time.”

          “…but sir, that means…”

“I know what it means.” Dash said. “…just go.”

The wolf nodded and turned, walking away.

Dash looked around and found a good hiding spot, then he crouched low between two rocks and waited.

Almost an hour later Dash was walking through the woods, struggling to see through the slow falling snow.

The traitor had come to the Rear Entrance, just as before. The wolf had stayed close to the shadows, so Dash couldn’t see who it was. It had exited the cave and proceeded through the woods.

Dash had given it a moment to get ahead of him, then he had followed.

He could see the figure now, almost one hundred yards in front of him. The wolf hadn’t seen him as of yet and had no idea that it was being followed.

As they neared a clearing Dash started to shake a bit. If the traitor was who he thought it was it meant dire consequences. Consequences he wasn’t sure he could carry out.

The wolf walked to the center of the clearing and Dash cut to the right, slinking through the bushes on the outskirts of the clearing.

It was a good thing he did because as it reached the center of the clearing the wolf turned and looked behind it, but by that time Dash was already in a flanking position to the right.

Dash was conscious of the fact that his ability to remain silent meant everything to his survival of this observation.

A mouse would have made more noise.

The figure stopped in front of an outcropping of rocks and said. “…for change.”

…at least that’s what Dash thought it said. He couldn’t be sure because the wolf was too far away. He spotted a rock sticking out of the ground and crawled to it. He was crossing open ground so he kept low and just prayed that the wolves wouldn’t spot him.

He made it to the rock and slowly peeked his head over the top.

The other wolves had joined the traitor by this time and they were talking. Dash came in at the middle of the conversation.

“…no, there wasn’t even a guard there this time.” The traitor said.

The three wolves nodded and the traitor stepped forward into a shaft of moonlight streaming down through the clouds.

Dash’s heart fell from his chest to his paws. He was certain he could feel it beating there. He sighed. “…why?” He thought. “Why you? Why would you do something so stupid.”

“So were you successful?” The lead wolf asked.

The traitor nodded. “Dash will follow me out of the cave tomorrow. I came up with an excuse that he bought.”

          The lead wolf nodded.

“We should wait until we’re out of sight of the cave at least.” The traitor said. “If anyone hears him cry out you will have a war on your paws.”

The lead wolf nodded. “A war we cannot hope to win, I agree.”

The traitor nodded and sighed. “…it’s done then. Dash will die tomorrow and you will have the clan. …and my family?”

“…will be taken care of.” The lead wolf said. “…just as agreed.”

The traitor nodded. “This will cause me considerable pain. I hope you do not plan to double-cross me.”

The lead wolf shook his head. “You’ve been a great help to us and that deserves reward.”

The traitor nodded. “We’ll do it tomorrow then.”

          The lead wolf nodded.

The traitor look behind it and sighed. “…and now I need to be getting back before I’m missed. My mate could wake at any moment and if I’m missing it will be suspicious.”

The lead wolf nodded. “Thank you for your assistance in this matter.”

The traitor nodded. “…and thank you for yours.”

The three wolves stepped back and faded into the darkness. The traitor turned and started back toward the cave.

Dash sat there in the rocks, dumbfounded, unable to believe what he’d just seen and heard. Of the treacherous member of his clan talking of his death so casually. He’d never have believed it had it come from a third party.

He shook his head to clear it of such thoughts and stood, starting after the traitor. He had to confront the wolf, to offer it a chance at redemption. He didn’t want to think of what he’d be forced to do if it refused.

He started running, away from the path the wolf had taken. He’d have to beat the traitor back to the Rear Entrance, luckily, he knew a shortcut that would put him there ten minutes ahead of the other, especially with the traitor still moving quietly to avoid being detected as it moved through Talbourne territory.

Dash turned his thoughts to what he would say to the traitor when he confronted the wolf.

          He had no idea.

          He just ran.

Chapter 5:

When the traitor came into the cave, Dash was already there.

The wolf looked around, ensuring that no one had followed it.

Dash looked at the wolf’s face and sighed. Then he leapt down from his perch on the rocks. “…that’s far enough.” He said.

The traitor jumped back, surprised at the sound of his voice.

          “…Dash!?” The wolf said.

Dash shook his head. “…what are you doing Melody?” He asked.

“I was just… just going out for a…”

“No!” Dash yelled. “I mean what in the name of Aniu do you think you were doing out there?!”

Melody tried her best to look confused, though her ears fell back and she would not look her brother in the face. “I told you… I was going for a walk.”

Dash nodded. “Yeah, you did that alright, snuck right through here and out to that clearing. I followed you Melody.”

Melody said nothing, but a look of defiance started to creep across her face.

“I can’t believe what I heard out there.” Dash said. “My own sister… talking of handing me over to the enemy, knowing that they would kill me.”

          He paused.

          “I trusted you Melody.”

Melody scoffed. “…as I trusted you.” She said.

“What are you talking about?” Dash asked.

“When you took over as Alpha I knew you would help us out.” Melody said. “You knew how I felt about Timbre and his duties as a Lieutenant. You were in a position to help us, and instead you made things harder. You forced my paws into this.”

Dash shook his head. “I did what needed to be done.” Dash said. “Timbre is a very experienced leader. We’re already missing two Lieutenants, and there’s no one to replace him right now. I need his experience, his leadership. The Clan needs it. You knew that when you became his mate.”

Melody shook her head and snarled at him. “No, I didn’t. I was young, he was young. I didn’t know he would be in danger every second. When we became mates he wasn’t a Lieutenant.”

“Well he is.” Dash said. “…you made your own decisions…” He paused and sighed. “Melody, how could you do something so stupid. Do you know what Aleu would do to you? …what I should do to you? What the penalty is for betraying the Clan?”

Melody nodded. “Yes I do.” She said.

“Why would you put me in that position?” Dash asked.

Melody glared at him. “You weren’t supposed to find out.”

“So you’re just fine with them killing me? …do I mean nothing to you? Your own flesh and blood?”

Melody sighed. “I didn’t want anything to happen to you, but if you wouldn’t help me, then I had to help myself.”

“…and what of the clan?” Dash asked. “…do you think that wolf out there really cares for them? That he will care for them? When you made the decision to leave Nome you swore your loyalty to this Clan. What about that?”

Melody shook her head. “My loyalty is first to my family, and what I do I do for them, no one else.”

Dash shook his head. “...and what do you think Timbre would think if I told him him?”

Melody growled at her brother. “…he won’t ever find out.”

“…he will if I tell him.” Dash said. “…don’t you understand you could be killed for this?”

Melody sighed. “If my brother sees fit to carry out such a sentence on his own sister then I accept it. It was worth the risk to save my mate and my family.”

Dash backed up and shook his head again. “Don’t you even try to make me feel sorry for you.” He said. “You were plotting to have me killed out there. Don’t bring up being your brother or anything else. You’re not even worthy to call yourself Balto’s daughter, much less a child of Aniu. I should have you killed for what you’ve done. You’ve placed your whole family at risk, the whole clan, with this stupidity.”

It was quiet for a moment.

“…so what are you going to do?” Melody asked, her expression still one of defiant anger.

“I… I don’t know.” Dash said. “You notice there was no guard tonight?”

Melody nodded haughtily. “Yes, I thought that strange. Seems I should have thought a bit harder.”

“The reason there was no guard is because I had a thought that it might be Timbre… never did I think to suspect my own sister…” He sighed. “Melody, no one else knows of your treachery. Give me the location of the ambush, help me to defeat this pack, and no one else will. It’s the only way I can save you from yourself.”

Melody laughed. “…and have things just go back to the way they were? …no thanks.”

Dash looked at his sister. “Melody, this is the only way I can save you. If you refuse me then I have one course of action to take. …don’t make me do something neither of us want…”

          “…and what’s that?” Melody snapped.

“You know damn well what that is.” Dash said. “…and you’re forcing my paws. I can’t help you if you won’t help yourself.”

“I wasn’t wrong.” Melody said. “…and I’d do it again. Timbre will never find out, and you won’t stop me. I know you, you can’t kill me. …not your own sister.”

Dash sighed. “You’re wrong Melody.” He said. “The oath I took tonight… I swore to protect this Clan from its enemies. If you continue this course of action then my sister died the first time she talked to those wolves… you’re only my enemy.”

Melody laughed. “…strong words Dash… strong words.”

Dash growled and raised his paw, smacking Melody in the side of the face, tossing her to the ground. “Damn it Melody this isn’t a game!” He snarled. “This is real! Help me and I’ll help you.”

Melody stared up at her brother, fire in her eyes. “…release Timbre from his duties.” She said.

“I can’t do that.” Dash said.

Melody nodded and stood. “…fine, then you leave me no choice…”

Melody leapt at Dash and hit him in the face.

Dash was surprised at her attack and fell to the ground. He rolled to the left as Melody tried to pounce on him and came back up on his paws. “Melody, please… don’t do this.” He said.

Melody snarled at him. “Help me and I’ll help you.”

Dash shook his head. “…that’s not the way it works.” He said.

Melody leapt at him again, but this time Dash was ready. He stepped out of the way and hit her in the back of the head, sending her tumbling to the ground.

“Come to your senses!” Dash yelled. “Don’t you realize what you’re doing?”

Melody got to her feet and rushed Dash again, however, this time she veered off to the side at the last moment and when Dash tried to sidestep again they collided.

The two wolves fought hard. Melody slashed at her brother’s face with her claws, seeking to blind him. Dash tried to reciprocate, but found that Melody had been right. He couldn’t do her any real harm.

After a few moments of scrabbling claws Melody finally connected with a strong strike to Dash’s neck. Dash went down hard and Melody was instantly on top of him. She tore into his shoulder and Dash yipped in pain. He found a bit of adrenaline then and kicked Melody in the stomach, knocking her off of him.

He stood and tried to catch his breath.

Melody got up and faced him.

“Melody, this is pointless.” Dash said. “Just agree to help me.”

Melody shook her head and ran at her brother.

Dash waited until she was very close and suddenly struck outward with every bit of his strength.

Melody’s head snapped back violently and she flipped over in the air, landing on the rocks and rolling to the side of the wall.

          She didn’t move.

“…Melody?” Dash asked. He walked closer.

          Still she didn’t move.

He continued his slow walk until he was right beside her.

          “…sis?” He asked.

          …still nothing.

          Dash sighed.

Melody suddenly twisted and leapt at her brother, catching him completely off guard. She was all over him.

Dash could hear and feel her paws beating into his sides at an alarming rate. He was losing ground, and losing it fast. Dash stepped backward and sat his paw down on a small rock. For just a moment his stance faltered to one side.

Melody saw this and took advantage of it, slamming her paw hard into his other side, just below his ribs.

Dash felt the breath leave his body and he fell to the side, crumpling up in a ball.

In the few seconds it took him to be able to breathe again, Melody had pounced on him. She was fueled by rage now.

Dash didn’t even recognize his sister as she rained blows down on his face and neck. He tried to block them, but found she was much too fast for him to catch all of them, or even most of them.

          Finally Melody stopped.

Dash covered his face with his paws, trying to ward off any more blows.

Melody sighed. “You forced me to do this. You forced me to do what must be done. You! This is all your fault!”

Tears were streaming down her face.

“…but now it’s time to end it.” She said.

Dash had no strength left to defend himself. His paws slipped from his face and he looked up at his sister.

“…this is it.” He thought. “She’s going to kill me.”

Melody opened and closed her jaws a few times, remaining silent. A few moments passed and she sighed.

Then she stood and got up off of him. “…damn it!” She yelled.

Dash took a moment to catch his breath, then rolled over and watched his sister as she walked to the other side of the small entrance chamber.

He wiped a bit of blood away from the corner of his mouth with his paw and stood. “…Melody?” He asked.

          She just sighed.

Dash walked toward her, wary of another attack. “…Melody?” He asked again.

          She still said nothing.

Dash stopped at her side. “Melody…” He said once more.

Melody sniffed and Dash could tell she was crying. “…I can’t do it Dash.” She said. She turned and looked at him. “I can’t kill my own brother. …do what you will with me.”

Dash shook his head. “No, help me, come back to the Talbourne. Trust Aniu. She has a plan for you, and for Timbre.”

Melody sighed. “You… you would still have me?”

Dash nodded and nuzzled her. “You’re my sister.” He said. “Help me, prove yourself to me, and no one else will know of this.”

Melody sighed. “Dash, I can’t… they said that if I went back on them that they would kill my family.”

Dash sighed. “…then we have to make sure that none of them escape, don’t we?”

Melody shook her head. “Dash, you don’t understand these wolves… they’re killers. They’ll do it. I can’t put my family at risk.”

Dash smiled. “Melody, I can protect you. We have all the Defense Force at our disposal. None of them will harm you, I promise.”

Melody sighed and thought about it for a moment. “…alright, I’ll help you.” She said. “…but if I do… you’ll not tell anyone else about this?”

Dash nodded. “…that’s right. Help me and you’ll have proven yourself to me once more.”

Melody sighed. “…you better be right about this Dash.” She said.

          Dash was tired.

He hadn’t slept well the night before. In all of his time with the Talbourne he’d never lied to Aleu before… not like he was about to do now.

He glanced behind him to see Melody following close behind. He could only hope that she could maintain her composure throughout the incident.

He stopped walking and let her catch up. “Listen Melody, remember what we talked about.” He said. “Don’t let anything slip that you couldn’t know without being the one talking to them. Aleu will be suspicious when we tell her this. It’s already suspicious that you’d be out of the cave that late at night… but if I vouch for you she should believe me. It is imperative that she doesn’t find out what really happened. If Aleu finds out what I know I won’t be able to save you, and I’ll be in for it as well.”

          Melody nodded.

“Alright then, here we go.” He said.

Dash walked across the Main Chamber to Aleu’s side.

“Hey Dash.” She said. “How are you?”

Dash smiled. “I’m alright.” He said. “What’s the status of the Defense Force?”

Aleu looked confused. “Everyone is accounted for and ready, why, something up?”

Dash nodded. “I’m going to need them all ready to go by this afternoon.”

“Well, fourth unit just got off duty, they were on patrol all day yesterday, and Timbre has already pulled three days in a row.”

Dash nodded. “I know, and I’m sorry to have to do it to them, but we need all of them.”

Aleu nodded back. “Alright Dash, what’s up?”

“I sent Melody out to scout around last night, see if she could find any trace of the wolves that have been attacking us.”

A look of confusion crossed Aleu’s face again. “…Melody?” She asked. “She’s not on the Defense Force. That could have been detailed to Fourth Unit’s patrol.”

Dash nodded. “I know, but I didn’t want a military presence. I would have had Timbre go, but he was leading the patrol, and I figured you’d be busy taking over the Force, so I sent her.”

Aleu nodded. “Next time it’d be a good idea if you at least let me know there was an op planned. If she’d gotten in trouble she would’ve just been stuck out there.”

Dash nodded. “I know, and she understood the risks… but she overheard something I think you need to hear.”

Melody stepped forward. “They want to take over the Clan.” She said.

Aleu nodded. “Well I figured that much. They wouldn’t attack us otherwise.”

Melody nodded. “..but they don’t have much in the way of manpower, so they intend to do it by assassinating Dash.”

Aleu gasped. “Well then we have to do something! Did they say when?”

Dash nodded. “When I leave the cave today to go with Melody.”

Aleu looked at Dash, then back to Melody. “Oh…. Okay, so how did they know you were leaving?”

Dash nearly held his breath. This was the crucial piece of information Aleu had to buy completely. If there was any doubt…”

“I overheard them talking.” Melody said. “Seems one of them snuck into the cave and has been blending with us, listening to plans and such.”

Aleu frowned. “Well, that would explain how they were able to hit the patrols so easily…”

          Dash nodded.

Aleu looked at Melody and then back to Dash, but remained silent. “Alright, what do you want to do?” She asked.

“I want the Defense Force standing by at our meeting place. We’ll go out as if nothing has happened, then when they ambush us…”

“…we ambush them.” Aleu said. “…and with far greater numbers.”

          Dash nodded. “…exactly.”

Aleu remained silent for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, I’ll put the teams on alert.”

Dash nodded. “Good, I’m leaving the strategy of the attack up to you. If we’re careful we can solve this entire problem right here.”

Aleu nodded. “Don’t worry Dash. You and Melody will be safe. You have my word.”

Dash nodded. “We’re leaving in the afternoon, so as soon as you can figure out the strategy and pass it down to the Lieutenants they should probably get out there.”

Aleu nodded. “It’ll be done.” She said.

Dash nodded. “Great, see you then.”

          Aleu nodded. “Take care Dash.”

          Dash smiled. “…likewise.” He said.

Aleu turned and ran off to tell the Lieutenant’s of this new development.

Melody waited till she had gone and turned to her brother. “Do you think she bought it?”

          Dash sighed. “I don’t know… I hope so.”

Then he and Melody turned around and left the Main Chamber.

Chapter 6:

Later that day Dash met Melody in the Main Chamber. “Are you ready?” He asked.

          Melody nodded.

“Look,” Dash said. “I know you’ve never been much of a fighter… just run when they jump out at me. I’ve got three units to watch my back plus the fourth in reserve toward the rear. I’ll be fine.”

Melody nodded. “Thank you Dash.” She said. She sighed. “I’m so sorry about all of this. I just… I didn’t know what to do.”

Dash nodded. “I sympathize with your position. Just trust in me, trust in Aniu and trust in the Talbourne. We’re always looking out for  the best of the Clan, even if it means few have to suffer.”

Melody nodded. “Thank you for giving me another chance.” She said. “I know you should have killed me back there.”

Dash smiled and nuzzled her. “You’re my sister.” He said. “To tell you the truth I could no easier kill you than you could me. You’re my family. We grew up together. I could never hurt you. It killed me inside when I had to.”

          Melody nodded and sighed.

“…but put that behind you for now.” Dash said. “They’ll be time to deal with that later. Even if you run they may pursue you when they realize that you’ve betrayed them. Though I’m going to try to keep you as safe as possible it may not be possible to keep you from having to fight today. Clear your mind and ready it for what may have to be done.”

Melody nodded. “…after you.” She said.

Dash nodded and started out of the cave.

It was some time later and Dash and Melody were still walking through the new fallen snow. It had stopped snowing about an hour ago, but the clouds overhead threatened to spill more upon them at any moment.

Melody sighed as she walked, reflecting on how she had gotten tangled up in this mess to begin with. It had started a little over a week ago, as she walking through the woods stalking a deer…

Melody crouched low, sneaking up closer to the deer in the clearing.

The animal had its head down. It was digging through the snow, trying to get at the last of the grass left over from spring. It was so determined in this quest that it did not sense the wolf as it crept closer and closer.

At just the moment she was about to spring, a dozen wolves stood up in front of the deer. It raised it’s head sharply and saw them. The deer let out a bleat and turned, darting through the woods.

Melody sighed in exasperation. It had been the first deer she had seen all day and it was nearly dark. “Thanks!” She yelled. “What the hell is the matter with you? Didn’t you see me sneaking up on that deer?!” She stamped her paws a bit in frustration, then realization dawned on her. “…and what are you doing here anyway? This is Talbourne territory.”

A black and white wolf with one orange eye and one blue stepped out of the crowd then. “Yes, we know. …and I couldn’t help but overhear that you have some grievance with them… might we be able to help?”

Melody chuckled. “…not unless you can convince the alpha of our Clan to let my mate out of his obligation to our military forces.”

The wolf smiled. “How about if I said I could do just that.”

Melody stopped and looked at the wolf. “…and how do you plan to do that?” She asked.

“We want to take over the Talbourne.” The wolf said. “We are without territory and starving because of Lytion’s repeated attacks. We withstood onslaught after onslaught while the Talbourne sat secure in their cave and did nothing to aid us… and then had the gall to call on us for help when they found themselves Lytion’s targets. We wish a peaceful transition of power. We do not wish to kill to gain the territory if it can be helped.”

Melody laughed. “…and how do you expect to help me?”

The wolf grinned. “…by releasing your mate from his obligation and giving you and your family a piece of territory to yourselves.”

“…and why would you help me?” Melody asked.

“…because you would help us.” The wolf said.

“…and how would I do that?” Melody asked.

“…by giving us the Alpha.” The wolf said. “If you can set up a way for us to bring down the Alpha then the Clan is leaderless, and I will step in. I will then grant you what I have said.”

Melody shook her head. “I cannot betray the Alpha.” She said. “I’m his sister.”

“Tsk, tsk.” The wolf said. “…and whom is more important, your brother who has failed you, or your beloved family.”

Melody swallowed hard. “…my… my family.” She said.

“…then why not help us?” He asked. “I promise as little bloodshed as possible. So your other friends will be safe.”

“I would test you.” Melody said.

The wolf nodded and smiled. “Very well, what is the test?”

Melody sighed, hardly able to comprehend what she was doing. “…the test is this.” She said. “Attack the Talbourne, but inflict not one death, I’ll give you the patrols and their locations. Attack and withdraw before any mortal injuries are conveyed and you will have my cooperation.”

The wolf nodded. “This seems fair to me. Fine, it will be done.”

Melody nodded. “Fine, I’ll meet you after dark.” She looked around and saw an outcropping of rocks in the clearing. “…here. You can hide in those rocks until I appear. You will know it is me because I will say the words “for change” as I approach.”

The wolf nodded. “Very well, we will do as you have asked.”

“If even one wolf dies in your attacks I will not help you.” She said.

The wolf nodded fair enough, now if I may impose an amendment to this agreement as well?”

          Melody nodded.

The wolf stepped forward, walking until he was right in front of Melody. “Betray us to your Alpha and I will make sure that with my dying breath your precious family share’s my fate.”

          Melody shivered at this.

“…do we have a deal?” The wolf asked.

Melody swallowed hard. “My family is more important.” She said to herself. “Yes.” She said. “We have a deal. Await my arrival at these rocks tomorrow night.”

Then she turned and ran from the clearing.

“I was so stupid.” Melody whispered.

          “What’s that?” Dash asked.

          “…nothing.” She said.

Dash nodded. “Well we’re approaching the clearing now. May as well get ready.”

          Melody nodded.

“So Melody.” Dash said. “…I take it this is the place you were talking about. The place you wanted me to make sure was in our territory?”

Melody nodded. “Yes.” She said. “…is it.”

Dash stepped into the clearing. “…looks to be.” He said.

Suddenly a eleven wolves leapt from the rocks above and to the clearing below.

Dash feigned surprise and turned to Melody.

Melody turned and ran away from the clearing as fast as her paws would take her.

Dash turned back to the wolf. “It seems hunting territory is the least of my concerns today.” He said.

The wolf smiled. “You die here Talbourne dog.”

Dash smiled back. “Oh I don’t think so.”

The wolf laughed and Dash could see he had different colored eyes; one orange, one blue. It made his face look very disconcerting. “I’ve heard you’re quite the fighter Dash of the Talbourne, but surely you don’t think you can take us all… you’re outnumbered ten to one.”

Dash continued smiling at his adversary. “…so it would seem.” He said.

“…then why are you still smiling?” The wolf asked.

Dash stepped back. “…because of them.” He said.

Just then Aleu and first unit stood up behind the wolf. Second unit stood up to his right and third to his left.

The wolf snarled. “We are betrayed!” He yelled.

Dash growled and leapt at the wolf.

The units from the Talbourne closed in on the eleven wolves and they all snarled, turning to face their enemy.

Dash took the leader to the snow covered ground and found himself fighting for his life. The leader was quite a fighter as well and soon had Dash on the defensive.

Aleu released half the first unit to go into the fray  to deal with the other enemies while she herself raced toward Dash.

The leader knocked Dash to the ground. “I’m going to kill you and then I’m going to go kill that treacherous whelp and her entire family!” He yelled.

Dash growled. “She’s my sister!” He yelled. He found a strength deep inside him and pushed the stronger and bigger wolf off of him. He hit the wolf once, twice in the face, sending him backpedaling through the snow.  Dash hit him again and the wolf fell to the ground. Dash was on him immediately and sank his jaws into the wolf’s throat.

The wolf’s cry of rage turned into a wet gurgle as Dash held his head up off the ground, clenching his razor sharp teeth tighter. He held the wolf up in the air until it stopped moving. Then he dropped it to the ground.

He had been so focused on his battle with the leader that he had not noticed the battle going on around him. It seemed the Talbourne had won though and all the enemy wolves lay dead or wounded.

Dash stood up just as Aleu reached him. “Damn it Dash what did you think you were doing? That wasn’t part of the plan.”

Dash shook his head to clear it of the ringing sound that the wolf had placed there with his well aimed strikes and almost fell down.

Aleu sighed. “…well at least you’re alright. The Clan can’t afford to lose you.” She looked around. “What do you want done with the survivors?” She asked.

“…there are to be none.” Dash said.

          “…what?” Aleu asked.

“…they threatened Melody’s life and the life of her family were she to…”

Dash paused for a long while. “…that’s an order.” He said finally.

Aleu sighed and looked as if she wanted to say something but then she nodded, a disgusted look on her face. “Yes Sir.” She said. She turned to the other wolves. “…there are to be no survivors.” She said.

Aleu turned away as the wolves began to carry out her order.

Dash stumbled out of the clearing to the mixed sounds of wolves crying out in pain and sharp silence.

He finally stopped and tried to catch his breath. His ribs hurt from where the wolf had struck him so many times.

          “Dash.” Aleu said.

Dash turned to look at her and was surprised by the look of anger there. “…what is it?” He asked.

“…you didn’t send Melody out as a spy, did you?”

Dash sighed. “…of course I did how else…”

Aleu cut him off. “No Dash, that wolf said they’d been betrayed, and just now you said that there was a threat against her life. How could that be unless she’d met them before?”

          Dash sighed.

“…you lied to me?” Aleu snapped.

Dash sighed and nodded. “I didn’t think you’d understand.” He said.

“So what really happened Dash?” She snapped.

Dash sighed. He saw no point in lying to Aleu any further. “She met up with them a few weeks ago and agreed to hand me over to them.” He said.

“So she betrayed us.” Aleu said.

Dash nodded. “…in exchange for her family’s guaranteed safety and Timbre’s freedom from his obligation with the Defense Force.”

Aleu shook her head. “…and you kept this from me?” She asked.

          Dash nodded.

“That was a stupid thing to do Dash.” Aleu said.

Dash nodded. “I know. …but I had to protect Melody.”

“…what if she’d’ve betrayed you again and still given you over to them hm? Then the Talbourne would be without a leader right now, wouldn’t it?”

          Dash nodded.

“If I had known that I would have sent a wolf with you two and not left you alone.” Aleu said. “That was important information to our plan and you had no right keeping it from me.”

She stepped closer to him. “Melody is my sister too Dash.” She said sternly. “I would have understood.”

Then she turned and walked away leaving Dash alone outside the clearing.

Back in the cave Dash stood in the Main Chamber. He’d been thinking something over ever since he’d left that clearing. He had an idea… but Aleu had to consent to it for it to work.

          Dash sighed.

He knew he’d messed up pretty badly in lying to Aleu. He should’ve trusted her… but he’d been sure that she wouldn’t side with him on this, so he’d gone out on his own.

He looked up at the ceiling of the chamber. “I ask your forgiveness for lying to my advisor Aniu.” He said. “I know now that it was a foolish thing to do. I listened to the voice of Shade whispering in my ear and it could’ve been my downfall and that of the entire Clan. I ask that you would help make me strong against his advances so that I may become the leader you wish me to be.”

He looked down at the floor of the chamber and sighed.

Just then he heard Aleu’s voice.

Dash sighed again. “…may as well get this over with.” He thought. Dash turned and walked toward the other side of the chamber where Aleu was giving out orders to the wolves going out on guard duty.

“…stay vigilant and remember that the safety of every wolf in this cave rests in your paws while you are out there.” Aleu finished.

          The wolves all nodded.

“…great, then I’ll escort you out to your posts.” She said.

Just as she turned Dash reached her. “…Aleu, before you go out can I speak to you for a moment?”

Aleu looked at Dash and nodded. “…of course.” She said.

Dash motioned for her to follow him and led her a short distance away. “I’ve been thinking.” Dash said. “…how much do you really like being the leader of the Defense Force?”

Aleu shrugged. “It suits me I suppose.”

“Would you be as happy as a Lieutenant?” Dash asked.

Aleu sighed. “Am I to be punished for my insubordinate words this afternoon?”

Dash shook his head. “No, you were right. I should’ve told you… if anyone deserves to be punished it’s me.”

Aleu looked confused. “Then why the demotion?” She asked.

“It’s not so much of a demotion as a restructuring of our command.” Dash said. “I think I figured out a way to keep Timbre out of the line of fire so much.”

Realization dawned on Aleu and she smiled.

For the second time in as many days the wolves of the Talbourne were gathered in the Main Chamber of the cave. Timbre stood at rigid attention beside Dash. “Aleu’s decision to step down as leader of our Defense Force and take the rank of Lieutenant leaves the position open.” Dash said. “A position my good friend Timbre will now fill. Timbre has been my best friend ever since this Clan found him and took him in only six months after I had joined the Talbourne. Together we’ve faced many adversaries, and always managed to come out on top. He is as close to a brother to me as I feel I will ever know. His leadership of Third Unit has been sound and true and it is with complete confidence that I entrust this new position to him. I’m sure his unit will miss him, but the Defense Force as a whole will gain a fantastic leader who will do his best to ensure their continued safety and awareness.” Dash turned to his friend. “If you would Timbre, please repeat after me.”

Timbre’s heart swelled with pride as he recited the oath of office. Only once before had he been as happy, and that was the day that Melody said she would become his mate.

When the oath finished the wolves all cheered. It was all Timbre could do to keep from smiling.

“The structure of the Clan is now as follows:” Dash said. “Shadow is Lieutenant of First Unit, Ami is Lieutenant of Second Unit and Aleu is Lieutenant of  Third Unit. Fourth Unit is as of yet without a Lieutenant, and until someone is found to take the position it will fall on the other three to split the duty of leading them. Timbre is now the Commander of the Defense Force, and I Dash, am your Alpha.”

          The wolves cheered.

“Wolves of the Fourth Unit. If you have nominations from within your unit, or if you have nominations from outside your unit as to someone who would be well suited to lead you, please submit their names to me for consideration.”

Dash looked down upon the wolves. “With that, this meeting is hereby adjourned and you are dismissed. Please return to your chambers.”

The wolves all started to break away, walking away from the Main Chamber.

Dash turned to his friend. “Congratulations Timbre.” He said.

Timbre smiled. “Thank you Dash.” He said. “It is truly an honor.”

Dash nodded. “I know I can depend on you.”

Timbre nodded. “…of course Dash.” He said. “If you’ll excuse me I think the Defense Force is waiting for me to dismiss them to their duties.”

Dash nodded and Timbre walked away.

Dash smiled, glad he had finally been able to help his friend. He looked up at the ceiling of the cave. “Thank you Aniu.” He said “…thank you.”

Epilogue:

A young wolf stepped out of the Shadows and into the moonlight.

The guard at the rear entrance stood up straight. “Hey you… you’re not suppose to be out there, who are you?”

The young wolf grinned at the young guard and sprung forward, grasping the guard’s throat in his jaws before the other could even cry out. A sharp twist of the head and a sickening crunch and it was over. The intruder dropped the dead guard to the ground. He looked into the cave and smiled. “Tonight you pay          for what you have done traitor.” He said quietly. Then he walked into the cave.

Melody was getting ready to lay down.

She had been set to wait up for Timbre, but he was taking far too long and the events of the day had exhausted her. She walked over to the corner and sighed. She almost couldn’t believe how stupid she’d been. As Dash had said, with time, he had found a way to keep Timbre at home more often… and she almost had him killed.

Melody curled up on the floor of the chamber and closed her eyes. “…at least Dash is forgiving.” She thought.

“Didn’t think we’d find you?” A voice snarled.

Melody’s eyes snapped open. She was facing a very angry young wolf standing in front of her chambers. She quickly sprung to her feet. “Who are you and what are you doing here?” She asked.

The wolf chuckled. “I’m the son of the wolf that you betrayed.” He said. “…and since you defaulted on our agreement I’m here to kill you.”

          Melody started to shake.

The wolf grinned evilly. “It’s alright, it won’t take long, I promise…”

Timbre was making his way to his chambers, Ami at his side. He’d  been talking with the Lieutenants for quite some time, letting them all know that he could be trusted, and that he was concerned for them. He’d managed to work it out where the days weren’t as long for them, and for this they were pleased.

Ami’s chambers were just past Timbre’s, so the two had decided to walk and talk together as they traveled back.

Timbre was anxious to get back to Melody. He knew she was probably waiting up on him and it was very late. The meeting had taken longer than he had planned for it to.

Just then Ami and Timbre both heard Melody scream.

Ami’s ears pushed forward in an expression of alarm as she glanced at Timbre. Then both were running to the chamber.

Timbre slid through the opening to see a young black and white wolf on top of Melody.

“You, off her, now!” He yelled.

The wolf smiled and turned toward Timbre. “…you’re next.” He said. Then he struck downward with his jaws.

“No!” Timbre yelled. He started forward but instantly realized he would be too late.

Just before the wolf’s razor sharp teeth met Melody’s flesh Ami barreled into him. Knocking him off her.

The wolf turned to Ami and hit her several time in the side of the head, rocking Ami’s vision until it all turned into singe brown blur. The wolf grabbed her shoulder with his jaws and spun around, hurling her into the rock wall.

Ami fell to the floor, unmoving.

Timbre looked at Ami, then to Melody, then back to the wolf.

          Fire shown in his eyes.

“…come get me.” The wolf said with a smile.

          Timbre ran at him.

The wolf surprised Timbre with his speed and by the time Timbre had figured out he was being attacked he’d already been hit several times.

Timbre backpedaled toward the entrance to his chambers. “Alarm!” He shouted. “Alarm, intruder!”

It was all Timbre could do to defend against the young wolf’s onslaught, much less land a few strikes of his own.

Timbre stepped outside the chamber and realized that with the shelf and a nearly thirty foot drop on the other side of him he had nowhere left to go.

He saw his opportunity then and as the young wolf leaned in for another strike he latched his jaws to the wolf’s flank. He spun around and released the wolf just as he crossed the opening.

The young wolf plummeted to the floor below, bouncing on the rocky floor of the chamber before rolling to a stop a few yards away.

Timbre was breathing hard. He steadied himself and fought to get it under control.

The young wolf stood and stumbled. One of his forelegs was clearly broken and he shuffled backward toward the exit from the Main Chamber.

Timbre heard someone step up next to him then and turned his head to see Ami standing there; a little worse for wear, but otherwise un-injured.        “What do you want done with him?” Ami asked.

Timbre watched the young wolf as he disappeared into the darkness. He turned to Ami. “…be gentle, but do it inside our cave.”

Ami nodded and walked briskly from the chamber, headed into the darkness the wounded wolf had retreated to.

Timbre turned away and walked into the chamber. “…Melody?” He asked.

Melody turned and ran to him. “Oh thank goodness you came when you did.” She said. “I was so afraid…”

Timbre smiled and nuzzled her. “It’s okay Melody.” Timbre said. “You’re alright now… and nothing else matters.”

Melody looked up and smiled at him.

“…come on, let’s go to bed.” Timbre said.

The two of them turned and walked into their chambers.
