Part 1- Rector's Past

"Rector, come down from there right now!"  A huge dog called out to his son.  Rector sighed and leapt off the dumpster where he was sitting.  "You could get hurt!"

"Sorry dad."  Rector grumbled.  Rector's family lived on the streets of New York City.  Life was hard for the family, begging for food as the parents tried to care for Rector, his brother Meeko, and their sister Storm.  Meeko and Storm had both gotten their fathers sleek brown coat, but Rector almost mirrored his mother.

"Stop picking on Rector. "  Another dog stepped up and Rector licked his mom's chin.

"I'm not picking on anybody.  I'm merely wanted to protect them!  He could fall!"  Rector's father, Luk, growled at Misty, the mother.

"Oh Luk, your such a worry wart."  Misty said.

"Dad, Storm and Meeko play on the dumpsters all the time!"  Rector whined.  "And you never growl at them!"

"Speaking of your brother and sister, why don't you go play with them."  Misty said.

"NO!"  A voice called out, ringing through the ally where the family lived.  Meeko ran up to his mom.  "I don't want him to play with us!"

"Yea!"  Storm said, coming from behind Meeko.  "We're playing hide-n-seek and he always cheats!  And then he complains when we don't find him!"

"That's because you just leave me there and go to play a different game!"  Rector said.

"No we don't!"  Meeko shouted, glancing at his mother.

"Do to!"

"Do not!"

"Do to!"

"Do not!"

"That is enough!"  Luk growled and the pups fell silent instantly.  "Meeko, Storm, play with your brother!  Go play hide-n-seek together!"  Meeko opened his mouth to complain.  "NOW!"  The pups ran out of the ally and began sniffing for a good place to play.

"Here's one!"  Storm called.  It was a larger ally, right next to the street where cars were usually rushing past as people tried to get home for dinner.  The street was empty now.

"I don't know.  It's pretty close to the street."  Rector said.  "Mom and Dad say we're not supposed to go near the street."

"Don't be such a baby!"  Meeko said, walking over to join Storm.  "Do you want to play with us or go back to mom and dad?"  Rector growled, but ran after his siblings.  After all he really did want to play.  And if they just kept out of the street............

"Ok, i'm "it"." Storm said.

"What?  I thought we were playing hide-n-seek?"  Rector cocked his head.

"We already played hide-n-seek!"  Storm said.  "Now we're playing tag!"

"But the street......"

"Rector will you stop being such a scardy cat!"  Meeko said.  "Look!"  To Rector's horror, Meeko ran, took a huge leap and landed on the street.

"Meeko!  Get out of there!"  Rector called!  Storm laughed, took a jump and landed next to her brother.

"Come back!"  Rector called as his sblings crossed to the other side of the empty street.

"If you wern't such a baby, you could cross the steet and come with us!"  Meeko called out.

"Stop calling me names!"  Rector shouted.

"Then come on!"  Storm called out.  Rector gritted his teeth and ran into the street.

A car soon came into view, speeding down the road as the man inside rushed home for dinner.

He didn't see Rector.

"RECTOR NO!"  A voice caused Rector turn around to see his mother running for him, her eyes full of fear.  Storm and Meeko looked in horror as Misty pushed Rector out of the way of the oncoming car.

Misty wasn't fast enough though.

"No!"  Storm shouted as the car zoomed past.  Rector bounced on the street, taken aback by the force his mother had pushed him with.  He turned and saw her laying in the middle of the street, blood oozing from her mouth as she looked Rector in the eye.

"Rector....."  She gurgled and fell still.  Her eyes went blank, still open.

"Mom."  Rector whispered.  The full force of what just happened hit Rector like a train.  He had just seen his mother die.  The light faded from her eyes as he watched.  Suddenly, a weight was on top of him and he looked up to see Meeko growling at him.

"That was all your fault!"  He snarled.  "Mom would still be alive if you hadn't stayed in the middle of the road!"

"But you told me to!"  Rector tried to push Meeko off, but his brother was to strong.

"But me and Storm ran across!  You just stood there when the car came!  It's all your fault!  Do you hear me Rector?!  Mom died because of you!  It was all your fault!"

A sudden scream broke through.  A woman had screamed, pointing at the dogs.  "There is a dog fight going on!  Somebody call animal control!  And get that dog out of the street!  It's disgusting!"  Meeko leapt off of Rector and Storm followed as they ran across the street and back home.

"Wait for me!"  Rector yelled.

"Don't bother coming back!"  Meeko shouted, pausing in his headlong sprint for the ally.  "We don't want you back home!  You are the reason mom is dead!  And you are the only one who looks like her!  Everytime dad looks at you, he will see mom!  We don't want you back!"  And he ran off.  Rector froze where he stood, eyes filling with tears.  He was old enough to eat and hunt small mice and to litter through trash cans, but to actually be on his own?

"Mom!"  Rector howled, running into an ally, away from the screaming people and the deadly street.  He quickly found a cardboard box and ran into it, the flaps closing behind him.  With a lound clap of thunder, rain started to fall, quickly scattering the people outside the ally.  Rector shivered as rain fell above the box and dripped into his pelt.  "I'm alone!"

Rector slowly opened his eyes and stretched, climbing out of the box.  It had been many years since his mothers death and he was now fully grown.  Having outgrown his cardboard box, he had found a bigger ally and made a home for himself.  Not once had he gone back home.  He knew by now, his father was dead and most likely, his sister and brother had found a mate.  Rector did not care.  His family abandoned him.  He had nothing more to do with them.  Though he still though jealous glances when he saw a dog running with it's family.

A limo suddenly sped past his home.

"Oh?  Looks like another celebraty is in the city!"  Rector said in the low voice he had come to aquire.  "Lets see who it is."  Trotting out of the ally, he followed the limo as it sped down the street, finally coming to a stop in front of a hotal.  To Rector's surprise, two dogs jumped out, one a red and white husky, the other, a brown dog, though he looked nothing like the dogs Rector had seen around the city.

"Balto, is this the place?"  The husky asked, looking up at the hotel.  A girl and what looked like her father jumped out of the limo.

"Yes Jenna."  The strange dog, Balto, answered.  "This is where we're staying.  They will reveal the statue tomorrow.

"Look dad!  It's so warm here!  Nothing like Nome!"  The girl said.

"Let me take your coat Rosie.  I dont think you'll need it."  The man said.  The family walked inside the hotel.

"A dog?  A dog is the celebraty?  And he's getting a statue!  Wow, some life!"  Rector said.  "And that husky!  Man, she was beautiful!  Woof woof!"

"Outta my way pooch!"  A man suddenly kicked Rector in the ribs as he ran to get past.  Rector snarled and snapped his jaws, but did not attack.  He was used to abuse from humans.  The rest of the day continued as usual, with Rector finding food and terrorizing other dogs and birds.  He was not to be reckoned with.

The next day, Rector saw Balto again, strolling the city before the big moment when he would get to see his statue.  Rector's heart leapt.  How much he wanted to talk to the strange dog, find out what he was!

"Excuse me!"  Rector called, bounding up to Balto.

"Hello."  Balto said.  "Do you live here?"

"In New York?  Yea.  Rector's the name."  Rector said.  "I saw you get out of the limo yesterday."

"Yea, that was me.  I'm Balto."  Balto smiled at Rector.

"If you don't mind me asked, what are you?"

"What?"

"Well you don't look like any dog i've ever seen!"  Rector said.

"That's because i'm not all dog.  My mother was a wolf."  Balto answered.

"A wolf?  Wow!  Thats amazing!  Is that why your getting a statue?"  Rector asked.  Balto laughed.

"No.  I'm getting one because a few years ago, i ran as lead dog, delivering a box of medicine to my home-town of Nome in Alaska.  The children were dying and i....well i saved them."  Balto looked down modestly.

"That's amazing!"  Rector gasped.  "Your a hero!"

"Thank you Rector."  Balto said.  "So do you have family?  A dog as nice as you should have a mate or something?"

"Well, i HAD a family."  Rector said.  "But my mother died when i was young.  And my brother and sister haven't talked to me in years.  They blame me for her death ya see."

"Oh i'm sorry!"  Balto said, eyes wide.  " I didn't mean to bring up bad memories or anything."

"It's alright."  Rector shrugged.  "I've gotten over it by now."

"Rector, have you, you know, tried talking to your brother and sister?"  Balto asked nervously.  "I mean, just explaining that it is not your fault."

"But it was my fault.  My mother died saving me.  I am to blame."  Rector said.

"If she died saving you, your not to blame!"  Balto said.  "I don't mean to intrude in your life, but if you just talked to them, maybe they've gotten over it to.  You can have a family and be happy!"

"A family does sound nice....."  Rector said.

"A family is one of the many joys in my life!  I wouldn't be where i was if it were not for my family."  Balto said.

"Yea!  Yea!"  Rector said, his heart fluttering with excitement.  He was going to have a family!  He would be happy!  His brother and sister would forgive him and they would all be happy and live together and finally be a family!

"Balto!  It's time to go!"  A voice called.  The dogs turned to see Rosie leaning out of the limo window.

"I have to go."  Balto said.  "Nice talking to you Rector."

"Thank you Balto!  I'm going to have a family again!"  Rector called out as the wolfdog ran off.  Rector wasted no time running off.  Even after all the years, he knew excatly where the ally where he used to live was.  Most of the time, he avoided going down the street, but this time he couldn't wait. Without stopping, he burst into the ally, and his heart sank.

It was empty.

"Meeko!"  He called out.  "Storm!"  No answer.  "Meeko!  Storm!"  He called louder.  A voice grunted beind the dumpster and a large brown dog stoped out.  He eyes were hard and he claws were sharper than Rector had ever seen.

"What do you want!"  The dog snarled.  "This is my allyway!  Go find your own!"

"No!"  Rector said.  "My family has lived here since i was a pup!"

"I've lived here since i was a pup!"  The dog snarled lounder.  "Go away!"

"Meeko?"  Rector gasped.  The dog froze.

"How do you know me?"  Meeko gasped, eyes getting wide.

"You don't regonize me?  It's me!  Rector!  Your brother!"  Rector said, tail wagging hard.  It was Meeko!

"Rector?"  Meeko gasped.  Meeko suddenly ran at Rector and before he knew it, Rector felt teeth around his neck.

"You gotta lot of nerve coming here!"  Meeko growled, shaking his head, sending Rector flying to the wall.

"Meeko what are you talking about?  Where is Storm?"

"She's dead!"  Meeko shouted.  "And i killed her!"

"What?"  Rector gasped, taking a step back.  "Why would you do that!"

"She asked me to!  Father went insane after he heard of mothers death!  And then you never came home, so he just lost his mind!  He started hitting me and Storm until she finally asked me to kill her!  That act made my heart turn cold.  Father then died of starvation because he wouldn't eat a thing!  It took me a while to reliaze it was your fault!  You caused moms death and you not coming back caused father's and storm's death!"

"No!  I didn't do that!"  Rector said.  "It wasn't my fault."  Meeko leapt as his brother and Rector moved aside.  "Meeko, are you really going to kill me?"

"I'll tear your bloody throat out you rotten good-for-nothing freak!"  Meeko shouted.  That made Rector mad.

"Shut up Meeko!"  Rector shouted, so loudly that Meeko was shocked.  "I came to make amends with my family!  I will fight you though!  You killed Storm and you are the one who told me not to come back!  You are the one who tempted me to cross the street and you are the reason i've been living alone for my whole life!"  With a roar, Rector leapt across the ally to his brother, who had been surprised by his attack.

Rector easily pinned down Meeko and in one swift motion, killed him.  Rector stood over his brothers body, blood streaming from the wound on Meeko's neck.  Suddenly, Rector reliazed what he had done.

"Meeko!"  Rector shouted, pushing his brother's body with his nose.  Of course, Meeko didn't stir.  Tears streamed down Rector's face as he reliazed his whole family was dead.  "Meeko!  If only i hadn't come!  You would still be alive!"  Rector buried his face in his brother's coat and weapt.  Suddnely, his head shot up.

"If only i hadn't come!  That's it!  Balto was the one who told me to come here!  Balto was the reason your dead!"  Rector shouted.  In his grief, Rector's mind began to change as his heart turned icy cold.  "Balto!"  Rector sped out of the ally and ran all the way to the hotel where Balto's limo was seen in the front.  The family had just stopped by to pick up their things from the hotel before leaving for Nome.

"Balto!"  Rector called and leapt ontop of him.  Rosie screamed as Rector attacked.  "I was sent to the ally by you!  And i killed my brother!  I wouldn't have killed him if you didn't tell me to go there!   It's your fault!"  Rector screamed, clawing at the wolfdog.

"Rector, calm down!"  Balto pleaded.  "I only suggested it!"  Strong hands gripped Rector and pulled him off.  Many people had come to help pull him away.  Rector continued barking until a muzzle was placed over his face.  He was quickly taken to the pound.

"This one has to be put down."  the men carrying his cage said.  "He's an attack dog."

"Alright.  I do that tomorrow evening."  The man said, but Rector wasn't listening.  He was thinking.  Balto was heading back to Nome on a private plane that night.  He would get revenge on the wolf dog.  That night, Rector escaped the pound by running out as his cage was opened for food and water to be brought in.  He didn't stop running until he saw the airport.  By that time, he was panting.

"Balto, i'll get you!"  Rector gasped.  He noticed many men loading suitcases onto the plane.

"This one's going to Nome, ALaska!"  The man called.  "We're just loading up the last of the suitcases."

"Nome!"  Rector said.  "That's where Balto lives."  Rector ran up to the man, trying to board.

"Whoa there big fellow!"  The man grabbed Rector, holding him down.  "Hey John, who's this?"

"Probably a dog that got loose from his cage on the plane!"  Another man called.

"Are you sure?"  The man said.

"Just get him a cage and put him in the back with the rest of the pets!  We have to hurry!  The plane's ready to take off!"  John called back.  Rector was hauled into another cage and pushed into the plane where he waited.

Much later, the plane would land in Nome, where Rector would escape his cage and meet Steele, the sled dog who also hated Balto.  Rector would be ready to kill Balto when the wolfdog crossed his path again.

 Part 2- Jenna's Mission

Jenna quickly roused Boris and told him to watch Kodi's pups as she raced into town to find out what was going on.  She quickly found her friend Dixi, a small dog with a big attitude and an even bigger mouth,

"Dixi!"  Jenna called out.

"Good morning Jenna!"  Dixi said.  "How are you?  I stopped by Rosie's the other day and you wern't there!  Where have you been hiding?"

"I have been sleeping in the boat where Balto used to sleep."  Jenna said.  Dixi puffed out her chest.

"I told you he was no good Jenna!"  Dixi said.  "You can never really trust a wolfdog!"

"Dixi!"  Jenna gasped.

"What?  I'm only tellin' the truth!"  Dixi said.

"Dixi, whatever you've heard about Balto is a lie!"  Jenna said.  "He would never use wolves to kill his friends!"

"At first that's what i thought!"  Dixi said.  "But then Kodi said Balto would!  And who wouldn't believe Kodi?  He's the most honest guy i know!"

"Dixi i'm telling you!  Steele is the liar!"  Jenna said.

"Sorry, Jenna but i gotta go."  Dixi said, ignoring her friends plea.  "My human is giving me a bath and you know how much i love those!"  Dixi bounded off, the little bell on her collar tinkling as she ran.  Jenna sighed and went on running.  She just HAD to convince everyone that Balto was innocent!  And rescue Dusty why she's at it!  Suddenly Jenna noticed Nikki, a small brown dog that had run with Balto when he deilivered the medicine.

"Nikki!"  She called out and the brown dog stopped and waited for her.

"Hey Jenna."  He said in his deep voice.

"Nikki, where is Steele?"  Jenna gasped.  "I must find him and talk about Balto!"

"Why would you want to talk about that tratior?"  Nikki asked.  "He was planning to kill us!"

"Nikki, do you really believe that?" Jenna said.  "You ran with Balto with the medicine!  If he wanted you dead, don't you think he would have done it by now?"

"I guess."  Nikki said.  "But Kodi,"

"Kodi was forced to say that!"  Jenna said.  Nikki gasped, looking shocked.

"What?!  Kodi was forced?  How did Steele force him!"

"Steele kidnapped Dusty!"  Jenna said, relieved that someone finally was listening to her.

"Dusty?  I noticed she was gone."  Nikki said.  "Jenna, what are we going to do?"

"Well, i'm trying to get all the dogs to see sense!"  Jenna said.

"I'll help!"  Nikki offered.  "And i can get Kaltag to.  We'll stop Steele!"  With that, Nikki ran off.  Jenna breathed a huge sigh of relief.  Finally, someone was helping her!  In the distance, she saw Nikki talking to his sledmate and his best friend Kaltag. Kaltag looked shocked then the two dogs ran off.

"With their help, i can free Dusty and get Balto to come back home!"  Jenna said happily.

"I don't think so!"  A voice snarled.  Jenna whipped around to find a huge black dog standing right behind her.  Something clicked in her brain, something that told her that she had met this dog before, but she couldn't remember.

"I am Rector."  The black dog said.  "And that wolfdog had better not come back or i will tear his throat out!  And i'll kill you if you try to stop me!  I know Balto is your mate!  I saw you two in New York!"

"New York?"  Jenna took a step back.  "When was i in New York?"

"The statue of your mate!"  Rector growled.  Jenna's eyes got wide.  This was the dog that had attacked Balto in New York!

"I remember you!"  Jenna said.  "You attacked Balto for......"

"For killing my family!"  Rector snarled.  "If that wolfdog shows his face, i'll rip it off!  And i'll make you watch!"

"Balto wouldn't kill your family!"  Jenna said.

"He did!  If he hadn't told me to go to the allyway that night in New York, my brother would still be alive!"  Rector snarled.  Jenna decided to go along with this dog, if only to be safe.

"He killed your family, so you kill mine."  She said.  Rector nodded.  "Do you think killing is going to make it better?"

"Of course!  Steele said it would fill my lust for revenge!"  Rector growled.

"Steele is a liar.  He probably promised you something as well."  Jenna said.

"He promised me that i would get to stay in Nome and that he and i would bring order to the dogs here!  I would be his equal!"  Rector said, eyes firing up.

"I will be there, the day Steele keeps that promise.  And i warn you.  He has yet to keep others waiting."  Jenna said.  With that, she turned and ran as fast as she could, away from this dog and from his evil ways, leaving him to ponder over her words.

"Balto."  She whispered.  "I want you to come home, but i don't want you to die!  What should i do?!"
