Balto (The Revelation)

Chapter 2 – The Introduction

          “My head…”

Balto slowly opened his eyes, revealing what in front of him. His vision was blurry, but soon, he could see clearly. He saw a wooden bucket and mop. Furthermore, he realized he was already in home. He tried to get up, holding his head with his paw. It seemed the pain was already gone, yet the impact could be felt. When he looked above, he saw a bright sunrise shone at him. Then, he heard a sound from behind. A Russian goose was standing there.

“Balto, you wake up!” he yelled, grabbing Balto’s head, “Oh, Balto. You make me so afraid.”

“Am I?” Balto chuckled, “By the way, how did I get here?”

“Maybe, you should ask that by yourself to them,” Boris answered, motioning to 2 wolves at outside.

“Them?” Balto confused, “They saved me?”

Boris nodded, smiling to curious Balto. Even Balto himself hadn’t recognized them yet, they already saved his life. Knowing he woke up already, the 2 wolves, one male grey wolf and another female white wolf, began moving closer to him. They stood before him.

“It looks like you’re okay…” a female white wolf started.

“Sorry, we didn’t introduce ourselves earlier…” a grey wolf continued, “I’m Luka, and she is Reina.”

“Hello, Luka and Reina…” Balto greeted, trying to stand up, “Can I ask you something? Why you helped me and who was those black wolves?”

They remained in silence. They started to gaze each other before finally, Luka began to speak.

          “Actually…” he started.

“BALTO!” a red husky suddenly rushed inside, making everyone at there fell in surprise.

“Jenna?” Balto was surprised, “What’s wrong?”

“Boris told me you were attacked by wolves. Are you okay, Balto?” Jenna nuzzled him, then her attention went to 2 wolves who stepped beside, “Who are they?”

“They are kind of my friends…” Balto answered.

          “Kind of?” Jenna looked puzzled.

          “It’s a long story…” Balto smiled.

“Then I guess…” Luka interrupted, “We will go outside for awhile…”

Both of Luka and Reina stepped aside then, taking their leaving slowly without disturbing that couple inside. Boris himself could only smiled after he knew everything was okay. After all, there was nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, Luka and Reina planned something outside.

“Reina, you stay here…” Luka ordered, “I will check around. I’m afraid they will come back.”

Without wasting more time, Luka quickly moved ahead. Scanning around, he looked everywhere. He kept walking forward until Reina couldn’t see him anymore. It seemed he just disappeared.

“Well, I think I will just stay here until he is back…” she thought, laying down gently at the ground.

Before she could relax furthermore, an unusual sight alarmed her. Someone ran from distance, getting closer every minute passed. At first, it was blurry to her, but soon, she could see a red husky who looked like Jenna came close. His breath was speeding up, showing to her that he was pretty exhausted. He then just stopped in front of her.

“Who are you?” the red husky asked, still panting, “What are you doing here?”

“Who are you either?” Reina replied.

“What?” the red husky replied back, “You’re the one who must answer me. I ask you who are you?”

“Fine. I’m Reina…” Reina answered, “Then, who are you?”

“I don’t need to explain myself to the wolf like you…” the red husky answered, scanning her around, “Beside, you seem suspicious.”

“Why do you think like that?” Reina asked, looking at him who was still watching any slight of her movement.

“Because you’re a wolf…” the red husky explained, “And it’s rare to see a wolf in here, near the town.”

“It’s an outskirt,” Reina replied slowly, “So, I guess it’s not strange to see a few wild animals here. Beside, I’m not heading toward the town. I’m just staying here.”

“That’s the problem!” the red husky suddenly exclaimed, “You’re standing at my dad’s house.”

“Your dad’s house?” Reina fell confused.

Reina began thinking back. The red husky had same appearance as Jenna did, and reminding as he told it was his father’s house, she came into conclusion. This husky might be Balto’s son.

“Oh, you might be…” she started, but cut off as soon as the red husky leapt at her.

Knowing it was inevitable, Reina then quickly prepared herself for the impact. The red husky just crahed her, rolling and rolling at the ground until finally, they stopped rolling. Right now, the red husky was beneath her. They were gazing each other for a moment.

“Nice move…” Reina started, “But, I think you should plan your next move if you don’t want to loose.”

“I don’t care!” the red husky snarled, “Let me go now!”

No matter how hard he tried, the grip from her was too strong for him. He was just like in captivity, being held under the great pressure. He hated when someone beat him, especially female. The red husky then kept struggling.

“Kodi!?” What are you doing there?” Jenna’s voice suddenly echoed in both of them.

Both of Reina and the red husky turned around to see Jenna was standing on top of Balto’s boat. Their quarrel stopped all in sudden. The red husky finally could get out from Reina’s pressure.

“Mom!” the red husky yelled, “This suspicious wolf blocked my way.”

“I’m so sorry…” Reina interrupted, looking to Jenna, “I don’t know he is your son.”

“It’s okay. Balto had already told me what happened before…” Jenna replied, gazing over the red husky, “By the way, Kodi. This is Reina. She is the one who saved your father.”

“So, it’s you…” Kodi, the red husky, examined her, “I just heard my dad were attacked by wolves, but I didn’t know what they looked like.”

“That’s fine,” Reina replied, “I didn’t know you in the first place either.”

“Kodi…” Jenna interrupted, “I think you better see your dad. He is fine, only a scratch.”

          “Alright, mom!” Kodi replied.

Kodi then came to the top of the boat. He carefully climbed the broken stair, heading toward his father. From what he saw, his father was fine enough. The wounds were just a scratch. Suddenly, he felt relieved after what he was afraid of.

          “Dad?” he started, “You okay?”

          “I’m perfectly okay…” Balto smiled.

“Well…” Jenna interrupted, “Based on me, you don’t look perfectly okay.”

“Realy…” Balto smiled, “I thought my wounds aren’t serious.”

Both of Kodi and Jenna chuckled for hearing it. Balto always liked adventure, and for that, he sure must know what the consequences. Everyone began laughing for a moment until they finally stopped. After they nuzzled each other, Jenna and Kodi parted, heading for their home. Instead of going back, Kodi moved to Reina at outside of the broken wooden boat.

“Hey…” he started, looking at Reina, “I’m sorry for earlier. I had already suspected you before.”

“Me too…” Reina replied, “I thought you’re the one of those wolves I saw before.”

“Hey, I don’t look like wolves,” Kodi stood back, “I’m pure husky. Well, half of pure husky.”

“Maybe you look like a dog…” Reina smiled, “But inside of you, you have some of wolf abilities.”

“Hmm… Maybe…” Kodi was thinking for a while, “Like great stamina and fast running.”

“Umm… Well, it might be…” Reina seemed hesitated, “It seems you like running.”

“I am!” Kodi answered proudly, “I’m the fastest sled dog ever.”

          “Really?” Reina asked unbelievingly.

“Of course,” Kodi replied, “I’ll show you. Tomorrow, I will come here and show that I’m fast. I’ll challenge you to run.”

“What?” Reina was surprised, “Run? Challenge me? But…”

“Tomorrow. Remember that!” Kodi exclaimed, then suddenly running to home.

Reina was confused for a minute. She never thought someone would challenge her in running. At first, she wanted to reject it. But as soon as that Balto’s son left before she could speak, she didn’t have a chance but to do as his willing. She then sighed, walking slowly to the top of the boat. She really needed a rest now.
