Balto the Puppy

Part 3

*Yes, flashback from Balto in Part one is still continuing*

When Balto looked up to the sky, the sun was in the middle. It was a pleasant afternoon, and Balto was figuring out on how to spend it, but then he heard crowds of cheer in the middle of the town. Balto was curious to see what was happening, so he followed the cheering noise.

“GO SHIFTER! YOU CAN WIN!” said the crowd as they were waving their hands all about. Who’s Shifter? Thought Balto when he kept hearing the little chant going on, but then he noticed who that dog was. There was a sled race going, and a jet, black husky was in the lead. The husky looked like it was almost a retirement age, but it was still strong and had enough spirit to run. When the jet, black husky crossed over the finish line, a crowd of people screamed in excitement.

“Hooray for Shifter! That husky is sure smart for its old age.” Said a man in the crowd. Many people were agreeing, and they went to go pet Shifter for congratulations of winning the race. Balto saw the pure bred husky with a smile on its face. Wow! That dog must be a favorite to this town. He seems so cool and fun to be with! After his thought, he wanted to go see the famous Shifter. So he pushed his way through the crowd without anyone noticing him. When he went up the old dog, he stared at the husky in amazement. Shifter noticed this little pup staring at him, so he smiled at the small fan he had.

“So what’s your name?” said Shifter as he bends down to meet Balto eye to eye.

“My…. My name is B….. B….. Balto. I think…… think that you’re the greatest sled dog alive!” said Balto as he stuttered his words. He really thought that Shifter is the greatest dog in the world. The husky grinned and gave a little chuckle.

“So you’re that wolf-pup I have heard about.” Said Shifter as he was eyeing Balto with a grin. Balto had a little cheerless expression on his face.

“Yes. You probably had heard of me. I guess you think I’m wild like everyone else does.” Said Balto in disappointment.

“Don’t be sad little one for being part wolf. I still like you, no matter if your half and half.” Said the old husky with a smile and a wink. Balto looked a little glad for hearing that.

“You do?” he said asking the old sled dog.

“Of course I do. I don’t judge one by who its parents were. I judge one by how nicely it treats one another.” Balto gave a grin.

“I guess you will like me, because I’m nice!” he said as he wagged his tail. The jet, black husky chuckled again. He thought Balto was a cute pup, and really didn’t mind if he was part wolf.

“SHIFTER! Come here boy!” said his owner as he waved his hand toward him.

“Well, I have to go Balto. Have a nice day.” Said Shifter as he walked to his owner. Balto saw him leave, and he still wanted to do something else since the sun was still in the middle of the sky. So Balto headed toward the boiler room, hoping that Jenna might be in there.

The boiler room door creaked as it opened. Balto peeked his head through the door, and he saw some puppies talking in there. Before he joined to talk with them, he heard his name.

“Have you heard ‘that’ dog name Balto? I heard he is part wolf.” Said one of the girl pups. Luckily it wasn’t Jenna, even though she was there in the conversation.

“I heard about that wolf-pup. He attacked a little innocent kid before.” Said a familiar voice that Balto over heard. It was Dixie, and she was a famous gossiper in those days when she was a puppy. Balto gasped.

“I didn’t attack anyone.” He said as he mumbled under his breath.

“What’s that noise?” said Sylvie as she lifted her ear in the air to catch the noise again. Balto hold his breath so she couldn’t catch him for ease dropping. The silence went on, but Dixie ended it at some point when she was annoyed when no one was gossiping.

“As anyways, do you like that wolf-pup named Balto, Jenna?” said Dixie when she looked at Jenna, hoping that she would say no like all of the other pups. Jenna looked this way and that, and she was hesitating. Well, I have to tell them that I do like him as a friend, even though the truth will hurt.

“Yes, I do like him as a friend, Dixie. I think he is one of the sweetest pups around in this town……..” but Jenna was interrupted by her loud, big mouth friend.

“What?! You like Balto? Jenna how could you? In my opinion, Steele is wayyyyyy cuter and awesome.” She said in her day dreamy voice.

“Well, Dixie. You have to except my opinion.” Said Jenna as she was walking out of the boiler room. Balto looked for a place to hide, so he hid behind some trash cans. Luckily for him, Jenna didn’t notice when she and her friends left the boiler room to go somewhere else.

When Jenna was out of site and earshot, Balto smiled and replied to himself, “Thanks Jenna for being on my side." So Balto left the boiler room area and he headed toward the beach, because the sun was almost about to set, but it wasn’t on the horizon yet. There must be something else to do, but oh well. I’m tired. I feel like bothering Boris right now. He giggled at his thought, so he went on toward the beach.

**********

Boris was on the deck taking a little nap in the sun. The sea breeze gave a warm blow, and he thought this was the perfect evening to spend it like it should have been everyday. Of course, Boris didn’t know that Balto was creeping up behind him when taking his little nap.

“Garrrrrrrrrrr!” Balto growled and screamed in his ear loudly.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!” Boris said as he was awakened from his perfect evening nap. Balto laughed as he was rolling on the ground.

“You should have seen your look.” He said as he giggled still. Boris gave him a sinister look. When Balto wasn’t looking, Boris grabbed the bucket that still holds cold water. Then, he took the bucket through the air and splashed it on Balto as his revenge.

“That’s what you get for scaring me.” Boris said, now laughing at Balto. The little pup shivered through his teeth, but he tempted to give a smile.

“Good one Boris.” Balto said grinning. The Russian goose gave a smile to the wolf-pup.

“So what’s for dinner?” he said jumping up and down.

“Fish that I caught this after.” Boris said as he was handing himself and Balto a medium sized fish. Balto looked at it and gave a look at the dead fish right in front of him.

“ Do I have to eat this?” he said cocking his head and plugging his noise from the reeking smell that filled the air from the fish.

“You never know if you like it or not.” Boris said, nibbling the fish into tinny pieces. He gave a smile to Balto so he can give it a try. Balto took a bite out of the fish, and he smiled back at Boris.

“This isn’t bad at all actually, but do I have to eat the head with the brain and eyeballs?” he said giving a worried look.

“You don’t have to. You can just give it to me to throw it out.” Boris said, wiping his mouth from eating the fish.

Balto smiled pleasingly that he doesn’t have too, and the night went on with dinner.

**********

“Good night Boris.” Balto said yawning. The blanket was over him like the night before.

“Good night Balto. Don’t let the bed bugs bite tonight.” Boris said smiling at him. Balto smiled back. The rest of the night went on, giving Balto and Boris thoughts about tomorrow, and if it will be exciting or not.
