Balto’s Second Litter Surprise

Part one

Balto was only five years old. He is still actually young for his wolf- dog age. After helping Aleu find her destiny and helping Kodi on his mail team, all he wanted to do is relax. So he headed toward Jenna’s house to check up on her. Soon, he wouldn’t become relaxed after hearing Jenna’s exciting news.

Balto went onto Jenna’s porch to meet with her. “Hello Balto. How are you today?” said Jenna as she was lying down on the rug on the floor. Balto replied back with a smile, “I’m doing fine. So how is everything going?” Jenna grinned, “I’m fine, but there’s something you need to know….” She was hiding the fact that she was going to have her second litter in a week. Jenna stood up, and Balto noticed her stomach was a little bit rounder. His eyes widened, and he replied with shock in his voice, “You’re not with someone else, are you?” Jenna just smiled, knowing it was only his and her puppies. “Of course not! It’s our puppies!” Jenna said in excitement. Then, Rosie came out of the door, and with her surprise, she said, “Hi Balto! Jenna is going to have a second litter of puppies! You’re going to become a father again!” Balto just smiled as she patted him on the head. “Well I have to go, you two stay here.” Rosie replied as she headed toward some of her friends. After she left, Jenna and Balto went back to their conversation. “So, are you surprised again?” Jenna said as she looked toward Balto. “Yes, I’m proud to be a father again, but what if one of them is not going to be adopted just like Aleu?” he said in concern. He didn’t want to upset them by telling that they’re part wolf. “Don’t worry. When the time comes, we will have to see.” replied Jenna as she laid down her head to take a snooze. Balto did the same thing, and for the rest of the pleasant afternoon they slept.

*One week later*

“So are you going to check up on Jenna to see hovw she’s doing?” said Boris in his Russian accent. “Yeah, I guess I could do this now.” Balto replied as he gave a big yawn. So the two headed toward Jenna’s house to see how she is doing. When they were only a block away from her house, the annoying terrier came out of no where to give them the big news. But right before he could say anything, Boris kicked him over the fence like last time. “We better hurry!” replied Boris as the two ran to Jenna’s house. They went to the back of the home and found the little shack that Jenna gave birth last time. Balto slightly opened the door, and it gave a little squeak. He popped his head in, and he saw Jenna lying down in her comfy basket with the blanket. “Hello Balto.” Jenna replied in a whisper. He walked toward her, and he saw five beautiful pups lying down on her side. “They’re so beautiful Jenna….”Balto said looking down at his new kids. He was counting to see how many looked like regular huskies. “Three look like you, and one looks like me…..” Balto said in alarm, but whispered voice. “But the one that looks like me has a red tip tail, red fur on its nose, and a red, triangular stripe on its head. So it’s like a combination of the both of us.” He replied in relief, thinking about there’s still hope that this one will get adopted. “Balto, what about the other one? You only talked about four.” Jenna replied to him. “Um… that one doesn’t look like neither of us.” He said as he gulped. “It looks like my mother, Aniu.”  Jenna bended her head down to get a closer look of her pups. “Jenna that pup looks just like a wolf, but more than Aleu. What are we going to do?” Balto said in a nervous voice. “Well, let’s just hope no one will judge her.” Said Jenna as she nuzzled Balto. “Let’s forget about that now, so what are we going to name them?” Balto replied looking down at the little pups again. “Um, how about that one on the end can be called Reverse? And the one right next to Reverse can be Mel.” Balto grinned, “Those are fine names, Jenna. How about that one could be Riley and the one that looks like me can be Arrow.” “Balto, those are nice names, but what about the white, fur pup?” Jenna said in curiosity. Both of them gave thought, but Balto spoke out and said, “How about Orenda? Her name means ‘Great spirit’ in Native American.” Jenna smiled with pleasure on her face. “Balto, that name fits perfectly.” The two parents smiled when they named their pups, and the day went on.

*seven weeks later, a week before adoption day*

It was a warm day at the beach, and Balto was watching over his five pups on that day. “Hey everyone, hear me sing!” cried Mel as she jumped on top of the wooden post. “Aaaauooooooooooooo!” the howl was a bit off tone, but Orenda joined in with her younger sister. “Aaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuoooooooooo!”  Replied Orenda after Mel. Mel looked a bit jealous that someone can sing better than her. Mel was a young, red pup, and she was a bit of the stuck up and diva out of the five. “Hey, Orenda. You’re a pretty good singer.” Said Reverse with a smile. Mel rolled her eyes at her older brother, but Orenda gave a smile. “Stop howling! It’s scaring my ears off!” said Riley when he shook with fear as he covered his ears up with his paws. “Hey! let’s go run over here by the little waves!” said Arrow as she started to splash in them. The rest of the pups followed, and Balto saw all their cute little expressions. Boris came near Balto. “Wow. They’re getting older. Such beautiful pups, all look like huskies, except for Orenda….. And a bit of Arrow, but Arrow has more of a look for a husky than wolf.” But then Boris paused, seeing that Balto had an upset look on his face. “Orenda looks like my mother completely. Actually, she reminds me of my mother. The snow fur, gold eyes, even her voice is soft when she howls.” Replied Balto with a little smile. After when he said that, Orenda came near her dad all soaked up. “Hi daddy.” She said when she shook her fur. Balto grinned at his pup, and Orenda looked up at him. “Will we get adopted next week?” she said wagging her tail. “Yeah, you guys will get adopted next week.” Said Balto as he chuckled to her. Then, she ran off to her brothers and sisters, and Boris and Balto gazed at her. The warm day passed by with the week and adoption day was near.

*Adoption day*

All five pups were in a little medicine box with a sign that said ‘Free puppies’. Jenna and Balto were looking at their playful pups before they were getting adopted on that day. “Garrr!” said Mel when she pounced on Orenda. Orenda pushed her off, and all of the pups kept rough playing with each other. “I can’t wait to see if I get adopted!” cried Reverse as he rolled over his side. “I am going to be the first to get adopted.” Said Mel in her selfish voice. Arrow rolled her eyes at her younger sister. “I hope my human wouldn’t be scary!” Riley whispered as he ducked his paws over his head. He is scared of many things as you can see. “Daddy, will I get adopted?” replied Orenda in her soft, sweet voice. Balto hesitated, for that he knows it will be unlikely for someone to adopt her. “Um, we will have to see.” he said as he smiled to her. Some kids past by, but two children looked at the crate. “Look at the puppies!” said a seven year old girl to her twin sister. “Can we get them mommy?” said the other one in excitement. The mom nodded with a smile, so each of the two girls was looking at each puppy. Then, they picked up Reverse and Mel. “I’m going to live with you?” barked Reverse as Mel was smiling to her owner. “I guess so big bro.” Mel said as she giggled. The two pups were being carried farther and farther away from the crate, and Riley, Arrow, and Orenda were saying bye. Some tears came down Jenna’s eye, but Balto comforted her by having her lay her head down on his shoulders. An hour past, and a little boy picked up Riley into his arms. Riley was shaking, but after when the boy was petting him, he seamed to calm down a bit. Arrow and Orenda waved their paws at him, and Riley did the same thing while his owner walked away with him in his arms. A few hours past and the two sisters took a nap with each other side by side. Then, an eight year old girl took a look at the puppies. “Awww! You’re so cute!” she said as picked up Arrow. “Bye Orenda!” shouted Arrow as she barked away with her owner. “Bye Arrow!” she said waving her paw. The two sisters smiled, but Arrow’s faded as her owner walked farther and farther away from them. Evening past into night, and Orenda was already sleeping. “Well, I guess no one will adopt her, just like Aleu.” Balto said in a whispered, gloomy voice. Jenna looked at him, but she knew too that no one would even adopt her. “Well, let’s bring her home then.” Jenna said in a murmured voice. Balto nodded in agreement, and on the night went.

*Couple months past, now she is about Aleu’s age when she almost got shot*

“Wake up sleepy head! You told me you would bring me to the forest today!” Orenda replied with a giggle. She went to her father’s boat that morning, because Balto promised to do bonding time that day. “I’m up, I’m up.” He replied with a yawn. The two headed to the forest, and Balto in mind was going to tell her that she was part wolf. When they arrived, freshness filled the air. Orenda was running around trees and into the open plains. Balto saw her wildness in her, and just chuckled quietly. “What am I going to do with that pup?” he asked himself under his breath, but something shot in the air. It was a hunter, but unlike Aleu, Orenda can tell from a hunter and a nice man. She was attacking him when Balto arrived, and the gun flew out of his hands. The man was screeching in fear when she pounced on him. Orenda showed her teeth, and the hunter ran away with his gun. “Orenda, are you okay?” said Balto as he puffed from running to her. “I’m alright, but I saw that hunter and I attacked him. My instincts told me too….” She said, pausing to look at the reaction of her father. Balto looked back and replied, “As long as you are okay, I’m fine with that.” Balto said as he nuzzled his brave daughter. “But one thing, why did that hunter mistaken me as a wolf?” Orenda replied in an innocent voice. Balto knew it was time to tell her the painful story behind this.

“He didn’t mistake you as a wolf……” Orenda confusingly looked at her dad. “What do you mean be that?” “Orenda, you’re part…… w- wolf.” Balto just said it straight out, and Orenda dropped her mouth. “Wha-what? W-wolf?”  “Your grandmother Aniu is a pure breed wolf, while your grandfather was a purebred husky.” Said Balto. Orenda was speechless unlike Aleu. “So I look like Aniu? And my brothers and sisters look like you and mom?” Balto nodded his head in agreement. “Well, we better start off toward home.” Replied Orenda as she was heading toward the beach and to Balto’s shipwreck home. Balto followed his daughter, and he found it surprising to see her not running off.

*Next morning*

“Balto! Orenda ran off to somevhere!” cried Boris into his ears. Balto got up in alarmed, and he knew that this might happen. “Well, here I go to find my wolf- looking daughter again.” Replied Balto as he leaped off the ship and headed toward the forest. The journey began to look for Orenda and her destiny like Aleu.
