Fall was coming in at Nome, Alaska. Trees were starting to look white because of the newcoming snow. The season kept changing it's mind, cold, warm, cold, warm. Winds began to pick up, people started to use warmer cloths. Meadows would soon become winter wonderlands when winter settled. A sled team passed the corner and stopped at the post office. A leaf was slowly taken by the wind, gliding through the sky. It then landed on water and slowly drifted way when gooslings ran on the ocean shore, playing tag.
Stella: " They're growing so fast."
Boris: " Yes."
Jenna: " Hi guys."
Stella: " Hey Jenna, where's Balto?"
Jenna: " He's at the boat."
Boris: " Oh."
Gooslings: " Hi aunt Jenna!"
Jenna: " *laughs* Hello."
Stella: " So, anything new?"
Jenna: " There is one thing. *smiles* There'll be new members."
Boris: " Congratulations."
Stella: " Does Balto know?"
Jenna: " Yeah."
Stephanie: " When will they come?"
Jenna: " In two months."
Gooslings: " YAAAAAAY!!!"
Later, Balto was in an alleyway. He was still used to being around there. A scent caught his attention, it was a bar. He licked it and a sweet chocolaty taste came out.
Balto: " Well, I am hungry."
So he ate it. In the night, Balto was moaning and rolling in his floor.
Jenna: " What happened?"
Balto: " I found this bar in an alleyway. It tasted good."
Jenna: " Yes, and now look at you. *sigh* You'll be better by tomorrow, I think."
Balto: " Let's hope. Good night, Jenna."
Jenna: " Bye Balto, I love you."
Balto: " Me too."
Later that night, a black and white malamute got on the edge of the boat and barked at his owner.
Man: " Steele, you better take me to a good and fast dog."
Steele barked and went up into the boat. Balto finally could rest late in the night, his tummy still hurt. The sound of wood creaking woke him up again, he turned around and saw Steele with a man behind him.
Man: " Steele, you brought me a..."
He noticed that Balto was wearing the golden collar.
Man: " Maybe you could be some use to me."
He reached out to Balto, in reponse getting a growl.
Steele: " Watch it, wolfdog. He's got a gun."
Balto got up and ran away, moaning quietly. A pain passed in his stomach. He ran until Steele cornered him. Balto then had no choice but to fight. He growled as Steele jumped. They fighted around the room, leaving a mess. Balto ran under a table where Steele couln't reach him. The man hit the table with his gun, it fell on Balto. He looked up and saw the man pointing his rifle, as he cocked it, Balto closed his eyes. BANG!!!
Balto yelped as he felt a needle in his leg. He got up and limped away as fast as he could but, soon he fell down and didn't try to get up. Slowly, everything was going black. The only thing that happenend before he was completely unconcious was that the man took off Balto's collar and lifted him into a cage as Steele snickered.
Kodi and Jenna walked up the plank into the boat, only to find Muk and Luk looking around a really messed up room.
Jenna: " What happened?"
Muk: " That's what we want to know. We came in and this is what was here."
Kodi: " Where's dad?"
Luk whimpers.
Muk: " He said that we don't know."
Jenna: " Oh god, and yesterday he had a stomach ache."
Kodi: " Well, mind if we help you?"
Muk: " No! Not at all! The more the merrier."
They enter the room and start looking, after a while, Jenna finds the golden collar.
Jenna: " Oh no, Kodi! (to herself) Something must've happened."
A truck drove off into the forest, as a wolf followed it. It was light gray, almost white. It's eyes glowed as the moonlight shone. When a cabin came in view, it climbed up and watched from a cliff.
Wolf: " You never listened to your surroundings. That can be easily turned into a weakness."
She watched as the man and Steele unloaded dogs.
Wolf: " Why do they get special care? Is it because we kill? You'd do the same if you didn't have anything else to eat, in fact, you used to do that."
She got up and backed into an entrance of a cave, her fur getting greyer.
Wolf: " Then again, you mistreat your own kind."
She looked as they unloaded a brown figure in a cage, like every other dog.
Wolf: " *gasp* Oh no, please don't be him, please don't be him, please don't be him."
As she said that she got off the cliff and had a closer look. Balto was laying in the cage, and the man took him inside as the others.
Wolf: " Now you try to take half my breed. Very well, my pack is big enough."
And with that she walked off.
Jenna was sitting in the boiler, it had been four days that Balto had disappeared. She cried with Kodi, Saba, Dakota and Dingo around her. They hoped their father would come back. Jenna still hadn't told them they would be big sisters, and brother.
Kodi: " Mom, I'm sure he'll come back."
Dakota: " Yeah, he has to be here."
Jenna: " Yes, but what if something happened? Maybe he's in the woods."
Saba: " He has to come back. He can't just leave us."
Jenna: " You're right. Anyway, soon, *sigh* You guys will be big brothers and sisters."
Everyone except Jenna: " WHAT!?"
Jenna: " Your father can't have just gone, he knows about this, I'm going to look for him."
Kodi: " Mom..."
Jenna: " Are you coming?"
Saba: " I can't."
Dakota: " So sorry."
Kodi: " Not me, I can't. The mail team."
Dingo: " I wish I could."
Jenna: " Don't worry, I understand. Try to come if you can."
She got up and walked to the border. Jenna then looked back, and started her way... she didn't know how long she had gone, a snow storm came in. It was hard to see, finally, exhausted, Jenna collapsed. She looked as something moved in the snow, thinking it was snow, she slowly closed her eyes.
Silver Moon looked at Jenna as she was still unconcious. She barked playfully.
Silver Moon: " Jenna? Wake up! We have meat!"
Her stomach growled, but Jenna didn't budge. Silver Moon howled, but Jenna still didn't move, Silver grunted.
Miksa: " How is she?"
Silver Moon: " She still hasn't moved. *sigh* I hope she gets up soon, I'm starving."
She crouches in a playful mood.
Miksa: " She'll get up soon, just be patient."
Silver Moon: " I don't reallt like to wait."
He lickes her.
Silver Moon: " Miksa! Stop! That tickles! Huh?!"
Silver crouches playfully looking at Jenna as she opens her eyes.
Silver Moon: " Good morning, sleepy head."
Jenna: " Silver Moon? Oh, what are you doing here at Nome?"
Silver Moon: " Nome? You're pretty much past White Mountain!"
Jenna: " Oh."
She gets up.
Jenna: " I must have gone farther than I thought."
Silver Moon: " Jenna, this is Miksa, my mate."
Miksa: " Hi."
Jenna: " So you're Miksa, Silver Moon has told me about you."
Silver Moon: " Anyway, what were you doing out in the storm?"
Jenna: " I was looking for Balto, he's been missing for four days now."
Silver Moon: " Balto? I saw him the other day. He was unconcious and in a cage. There was this man, and his dog. He was black and white."
Jenna: " Oh, no. How do you know?"
Miksa: " They've been there for a while now."
Jenna: " Do you know what they do?"
Silver Moon: " That we don't."
Balto slowly opened his eyes. He no longer had a stomach ache, but his head hurt. He moaned and felt uncomfortable around his neck. Instead of the golden collar, he had this collar, with something on the inside. He looked around and saw other dogs in cages with the same kind of collar. Some were barking, others looked vicious, some looked rabid, others had markings as if they were tortured. Most of them had the collar embedded in their skin.
Steele: " Enjoy the view, wolfdog. You'll need to get used to it."
Balto: " Steele, where am I? And what's this collar?"
Steele: " Let's see, you're in a shack, deep in the forest. And I'll let you find out the collar thing by yourself."
Balto: " What do you want?"
Steele: " I already have what I want, revenge. This is hell for dogs."
Balto: " I won't do anything for you that easily Steele."
Steele: " Well, it's my owner who wants you to work and he has ways to make you."
Balto: " I will get out of this."
Steele: " Maybe, in your dreams."
And he walked off. The man came in and took out Balto.
Man: " Let's see just how fast you are."
He tied a rope around the collar and yanked him to the other room. Then, he put him in a box. A bell sounded and all dogs except Balto ran. Men with cigarrete's shouted and encouraged the dogs to run, the track was pretty long. The man that caught Balto took out a remote with one button, and he pressed it. Balto felt a shock in his neck from his collar, it hurt him. He yelped and started to run, catching up with the others. The shock was still there, so Balto ran faster. Finally, he was in first place and won the race. The man tied the rope to the wolfdog's collar and took him to a place, it said " winner's prize." The guy took out some green bills and gave them to the man as Steele looked happily at his owner.
Man: " Well Steele, looks like this one could earn me some bills."
Steele barked and Balto was put into the cage.
Man: " We need a name for him. How about... Demon? Yeah, Demon."
Balto growled at the name. Demon? Bills? His neck still hurt from the shock. Steele was right in something, this was doggy hell. He hoped someone would arrest this man soon.
Jenna had been a few days with the pack, she was still getting used to it, the food, the cave, hunts. Balto had told her about Silver's dreams.
Jenna: " Silver, do you now what happened to the bear?"
Silver Moon: " No, maybe it drowned under a frozen lake or something."
Jenna wondered a bit. Silver, Miksa and other wolves were going to see about the cabin. In the distance was a man and his dog, Jenna gasped. Steele was there.
Jenna: " Of course, Steele."
Silver Moon: " You know the dog?"
Jenna: " He used to hit on me."
Miksa: " We have to see if Balto is still there. Maybe they moved him."
A truck came in, men took cages out. They had dogs.
Jenna: " No, he's there. I can feel it."
They left that night. Balto was unloaded from one of the cages, he had been taken to another race, his neck hurt and he was hungry. Steele enoyed this, he wasn't mistreated. He was fed every day. The collar Balto had was used too much, if it over circuited, he would be shocked to death. This happened the other day to a dog.
Silver Moon: " We'll train and then attack. It's best."
Jenna: " We don't know what they're doing, can't it be sooner?"
Silver Moon: " I wish, but we need to train. Lives can be at risk."
Jenna: " Is there a way to make it sooner."
Silver Moon: " I'm afraid that you'll have to do your best. That's the only way to help."
Jenna: " Very well."
Now two weeks had passed by ever since Balto was at Nome, he could barely get up now. Every dog in the cabin was only fed once a week, but that man, if that's what you want to call him, raced them, for money. Today he was going in an important race. The man came in and grabbed Balto's cage, he loaded him into the truck and off they went. It was the same deal, Balto was in a cage and a bell ringed. He started off, not wanting to be shocked. But that's what happened. Balto ran as hard as he could, pushing himself. Then he tripped and fell, badly. His front paw hurt a lot. It was bleeding. He whimpered and got up, and kept on running, but it was no use. He ended in last place. The man walked over and tugged harshly at Balto's collar, then took him outside. Where he grabbed a whip and hit Balto.
Man: " Bad Demon! You can run much faster! BAD BOY!!"
He hit the dog, having no interest in his injury. Balto couldn't defend himself, so the whip hit him, everywhere. Finally finished, he took Balto back, and that day was feeding day. But Balto got nothing. Steele smiled at this, it was good to look at Balto in this condition.
That night was the time that Jenna and the pack would free Balto, and the other dogs. Their eyes glowed when approahing. A doberman pincher/ rottweiler mix was out on guard. He had this spiky collar on him. Silver Moon approached.
Silver Moon: " Hello."
Dog: " What do you want, wolf?"
Silver Moon: " Careful with what you say, remember that we are your ancestors."
Dog: " You beasts, killing everyday."
Silver Moon: " You'd do the same if you didn't have someone to feed you or give you shelter."
Dog: " Why are you around here? And not in your pack."
Silver Moon: " A friend of mine is in there, and I want to get him out."
Dog: " You must be talking about the hybrid."
Silver Moon: " Yes, and I want you to let me in. You can fake you were attacked."
Dog: " Sorry, no. I can take one of your kind."
Silver Moon smirked, she walked a bit.
Silver Moon: " See now, there's the key word. One."
The dog's eyes widened and he took a step back, knowing what she meant.
Miksa: " But, can you take two?"
Wolf: " Or three?"
Other wolf: " How about four."
Silver Moon: " See, now. You can stay loyal to a man who tortures dogs, or let us in and be okay."
Dog: " Never."
Silver Moon: " Very well."
The wolves lunged at him while Silver Moon and Jenna got inside. The sight was horrible, vicious and rabid dogs. Some didn't stop barking, Jenna finally found Balto, but what she saw almost made her cry. He was almost unrecognizable. Blood on one of his paws, an embedded collar around his neck, dirty coat and very skinny. Jenna scratched the door of the cage.
Balto opened his eye and saw a figure. He growled, but, getting a closer look, saw a familiar husky.
Balto: " Jenna?"
Jenna: " Balto, what happened?"
Balto: " Torture, races, the shock collar."
Jenna: " Is that what's around your neck?"
Balto: " Yeah."
Jenna: " Come, we have to get you out of here."
Balto: " We?"
Silver Moon: " Long time, no see."
He looked as Silver unlocked the dogs cages. Even the rabid ones calmed down and thank her as they got out into freedom. Pretty soon Miksa joined and unlocked the remaining canines. Balto struggled to get up, but the whip took away what was left of his strength. Steele passed through the doggie door and saw Silver Moon, Jenna, Miksa and Balto. Jenna taking off Balto's collar.
Steele: " So you're still loyal to him, Jenna."
Jenna: " Steele, I don't think starting a fight here would be the best."
Silver Moon: " Let's see, two wolves. Some dogs, a wolfdog and a husky against one. I don't think luck is one your side."
Steele: " Oh but you forgot, my owners have guns."
He barked as loud as he could. Balto finally got down and they ran, Steele following. Silver, Jenna and Balto ran into another room, while Miksa and the dogs headed outside. Steele ran into the room where Balto was. Once in, he block the entrance, and put himself in front of the other.
Silver Moon: " Steele, I know what it's like to lose everything. Balto's like my only brother, and I'm not going to let you kill him."
Steele: " Oh, but he won't be the only one."
Steele walked over towards a lamp, and knocked it down. Starting a fire. Silver Moon, Jenna and Balto watched as it spread, and Steele ran out the exit. They did the same and saw men, some on the floor others shooting. But all the dogs ran away once they saw the cabin in flames. All the canines ran towards the forest as the fire spread to the trees. They ran, and Steele followed, only focused on one wolfdog. Finally, they got to a big river and started to cross it. Steele bit down on Balto and pulled him out of the water. They began fighting, not focusing on the fire. Jenna noticed and attacked Steele. When out of view, she helped Balto cross the river, who was now weaker. Finally on the other side, the canines and wolf pack kept on walking. Now a distance away, they watched as their homeland was destroyed from the fire.
Flames were still spreading, the forest was burning badly. Kodi, Saba, Dingo and Dakota worried for their parents. They hoped from the boat and heard howls in the distance. Looking out to see what happened, Kodi saw a big puff of black smoke in the distance, not to far away. He barked at the others and they came out and ran to look from the hill. Other dogs joined, and soon the entire town was looking worried at the forest. They hoped from there, as the pack of dogs and wolves hoped from a cliff.
Down came a rain drop, it passed through the clouds. Between the trees and onto a burst of flame, it sizzled as it calmed down, but then started up. More rain drops did the same, and soon one landed on a big black nose, and Balto twitched his nose. He looked up and saw black clouds thundering.
Another rain drop fell, and this time landed on snow, then on a hat. Townsfolk looked at the sky and saw black clouds that didn't seem to end. Pretty soon, everywhere rain drops fell, was pouring with water. Nome didn't mind this, actually, they loved it. Everyone cheered as they got wet, some danced, others thanked God, others smiled and laughed. Saba, Dakota, Dingo and Kodi heard howls in the distance, and responded back by howling.
From the mountains, dog howls were heard, happy ones. Silver Moon, Miksa, Balto, Jenna, the pack and the dogs howl and chorused as one. Boris and Stella listened as what they thought a wolf pack howled, not knowing it was also Balto and Jenna's howl.
The next day, acres of the forest were burnt, but Balto and Jenna got ready to leave Nome. Actually, the mistreated dogs were willing to come with them.
They said good bye to Miksa's pack and left.
Silver Moon: " Hey Miksa."
Miksa: " Yes?"
Silver Moon: " Come on in. I need to tell you something."
She walked in their home and Miksa followed, wondering.
Three months later, the puppies were born and playing tag with the gooslings. That night, a howl was heard in the distance. Balto looked out, and in the distance figures were moving. One of them would slow down a lot. A month later, all the pups were playing around, and in the distance, Balto saw a white figure.
Balto: " Silver Moon? What are you doing here?"
Silver Moon: " My pack settled in near here, Miksa and I decided to visit."
Balto: " Then where is he?"
Silver Moon: " He got a little... sidetracked."
Jenna: " Hi Silver!"
Just then, behind a hill, complaints were heard. Then came Miksa, followed by five little puppies. Balto and Jenna looked in amazement as Miksa nuzzled Silver and looked at the pups. They ran over and played with Balto's new litter.
Balto: " Soooo..."
Silver Moon: " *laughs* That's the same face Miksa put on when I told him."
Jenna: " They're adorable!"
Miksa: " Well, let's introduce them."
The puppies ran up to the parents and sat down. There was a white one who had black on the tips of the ears with golden eyes, a black and white one that had his father's markings and had red eyes. A brown and cream one with yellow eyes, a brown and white one with one orange eyes and the other one brown, and finally, a silver and white one with blue saphire eyes.
Silver Moon: " The biggest one is Aniu, the white one."
Miksa: " Next comes the black and white one, who's Shtiya. The next is Tikaani, who's the brown and cream one."
Silver Moon: " Then comes Atuun, the brown and white one. And the last one, who looks like my mother, is Nakita."
Pups: " Hi!"
They ran off to play.
Jenna: " Why is that one black and white? None of you have those colors."
Miksa: " Well, I think it's because my father is black and white."
Balto: " Well, Now our pups have playmates."
All of them laughed and watched their puppies, soon the gooslings joined them, and Boris and Stella watched.
Boris: " Oy, today is going to be a handful."
They watched, while the sun setted behind the mountains. Happy about new members that day.
