PART I

6 MONTHS OLD

The chill of the wind cut right through a small black and gray wolf pup. She was hudled close to the base of a spruce tree in the mountians of Alaska. Her name was Ashes.

The forest fire, she thought, Did it really burn the entire teritory? Mom and Dad, with it? This is all just a dream. A horrible dream. I can't be the last! Just then a howl cut the silence and rang through the air. "Dad!" she barked. She got up and ran towards the sound. She ran and ran. Across the frozen river and around a human nest.

She only stopped when she reached the thunderpath, where the monsters ran. It was a long black strip of a type of rock she had never seen befor. A monster roared by, the human safe in it's belly. The hot wind blasted her of her feet. She landed and bounced a few times.

She stood up on her bruised and burnt legs. That's not Dad. He hates the thunderpath, he says it's to dangerouse to cross. She thought. And with that, she turned and ran back into the forest.

It had been only a few days when the Ashes found herself wishing she had followed the sound. At least I would have found the other pack... She thought.

She walked and walked untill it started raining. Then she heard little squeels of joy and went to find out what they were. A human pup was dancing around in the rain, getting compleatly soaked. Why would any thing want to be out here in this? she wondered.

She began backing away, when she bumped into somthing. A human pup scooped her up and said "Puppy!" It began carrying her towards the nest. Then a full-grown human took her from the pup.

"Look at you!" it roared "Why are here without a mother? I'll call you Coal, becouse you're so black!" "Oh, no you won't!!" Ashes snarled. She bit the human hard and it dropped her. Ashes ran back into the woods and never once looked back.

She wandered on, day after day, with little food and no water. She was a terrible hunter, and there was no water supply since the rain dried up. Ashes felt like her throught was made of sandpaper. She came to another thunderpath. She was about to walk away when somthing across the thunderpath cought her eye. It was a small stream.

Not even onehundred feet away form the path there was clean, life-saving water. She ran out across the thunder path without stopping to look for monsters. She was almost across when a small monster clipped her back leg, sending her flying. She landed with a thud on the other side of the path. Her vision was getting cloudy, and her legs throbbed painfully. The last thing she saw was a dark shape standing over her...
