ANIMAL LABORATORY

I was born in a cage, small and tight

It had the sent of blood, laced with fright

I'm a beagle puppy, ginger and white

I'm a good pup, never scratch or bite

but I had the misfortune of being born here

A horrid place filled with terror and fear

To my left, a monkey with a deformed head

he kept to himself although in pain, he bled

To my right, a small bunny, her ears painfully red and dry

every nigh she prays to God "oh please let me die!"

The cat in front of me used to be friendly and kind

but her eyes have been swelled shut, leaving her blind

My brother go an injection and could just whimper and cry

but the humans didn't care, they just left him to die

A human opened my cage and picked me up rough

I told myself to be brave and big, strong and tuff

He held me on a table and another human came near

I yipped and I yapped, making my displeasure clear

He held a bottle in his hand, with white liquid inside

and poured it on his gloved hand, and rubbed it on my side

The second the white stuff touched my skin

pain coursed through my side, making the whole room spin

I howled for my mother comforting voice to cease the burn

but I yipped and yapped, and still no return

Finnaly, the humans put me back in my cage

and I licked my side, trying to cease the burns rage

Then I felt a paw touch my burns and turned to see

my mother, holding her paw through the bars behind me

Her eyes wide with sympathy, but she managed to smile

I couldn't believe she could be so calm, so mild

Then a new feeling came over me, not frightened nor sad

but of humans... are they all really this bad?

"No," I thought glumly, "I'll bet some arn't selfish"

but if only the good ones would save us, I wish

even if the few with the hearts of gold

would stand up for us animals, save us and be bold

but for now all I can do is lay down and cope

and prey the next generation will also bring hope
