“My Friend Misery”

Part 1-Drowning in you

On one dark and stormy night a lone wolf wanders the forest in search of a new home…

He wasn’t a very happy canine. He had no memory of his past, or how old he was, he only knew that he had been traveling for years. The road had become his only friend and he was so lonely at times that he would wish himself dead. But somehow, even when he was at the epitome of depression, he was strangely glad he was alive. His optimism, his hope, kept him from leaving this world. He attempted to several times though.

His proffered method of this was drowning. He would walk to a nearby stream or river and jump in, swimming deep, deep into the water. He almost succeeded every now and then, but he would always swim back up at the last minute, cursing himself for being such a coward.

As he was stewing over this, he started to smell. A smelly, smell. A smelly, smell that smelt, smelly. He had never smelt anything like this before. It was faint, but there. He soon realized that it was getting stronger; it was coming towards him. “It might be a hunter”, he thought, “or a bear”. So with those thoughts in mind he crouched behind a tree, waiting for it to come. He didn’t wait to get a clear view, as soon as he saw the creature move he jumped on it and pinned it to the ground. This was followed by a great deal of embarrassment as he realized he had just pounced on a girl! A wolf girl! A very attractive wolf girl. She was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. She was silver furred with black ears and a black tail. Her eyes were a sea green color that mesmerized him each time he looked at them. “I’m so sorry”, he whined, “I thought you were a hunter”. “Why couldn’t you tell by my scent?”, she snapped. Blushing greatly, his ears back, he lowered his head and stammered “I…I’ve never seen another wolf before”. “How could you not?”, she screamed, “what about your parents?”. “I don’t remember my parents, or anything for that matter, not even my name”. Just then her heart soften a little and she walked over to him, nuzzling him gently. “You poor thing, you must be terribly lonely”. “I am”, he cried, a tear running down his cheek. “Well not anymore”, she said licking away the tear and pinning him to the ground. “As punishment for attacking me, you’re gonna’ live with me forever”. He was lost for words, he finally found his friend. “So what’s your name?”, he asked. “Company”, she said, “but if you don’t have a name I’ll give you one”. “What is it?”, he asked. “Misery”, because you’d be miserable without me. “Well”, he smiles, “Misery loves company”.

Part 2-The Never Ending Game

Misery and Company were getting along great! They spent every minute of the day together. Running in the meadows, tumbling down the hills, frolicking in the forest. But most of the time you could see them fighting. Not like some barbaric street brawl, more like playful wrestling. For the one thing Misery loved most about Company was her never ending party attitude. It didn’t matter what they were doing, she would always make it fun. Misery liked to think of her as his “party animal”, someone who made life worth living.

They were in the middle of one of these “games”, when Misery finally got up his courage and started to pop the question…

“Ha, gotcha‘!”, Company shouted as she tackled Misery and bit his ear softly. “Yep, you got me”, he said smiling. But this time he didn’t push her off. “What’s the matter Misery”, she asked still holding him down, “don’t you wanna’ play?”. “Yes I do”, he said, “I wanna’ play a new game”. “What kinda’ game?”, she asked leaning in closer. “A never ending game”, he said, “just you and me.”. “Really”, she said, picking up the hint, “and what are we playing as?”. “That’s up to you”, he said. “Lets play as mates”, she said. “Then let the game begin”, Misery added with a smile. “Oh, I think I like this game already Misery”, she said laying her head on his chest. “Me too”, he said, “and it will never get old”. “So”, she said as she cuddled even closer to him, “you’re my man”. “Yeah”, he sighed, “I’m your man”.

Part 3-The Changing of Names

Three weeks after the never ending game and things were still going good for the two wolves. The only thing bothering Misery was his name. He was no longer miserable. He couldn’t feel any happier than he was now. So he decided to change his name to Ecstasy. It fit his mood perfectly and it sounded cool. The only thing to do now was to tell his mate Company…

“Company can I speak with you?”, Misery said as he was walking towards her. “Sure Baby”, she said nuzzling him, “what’s up?”. “I wanna’ change my name”, he said, “but I’ll only do it if you’re cool with it”. “Of course! Misery, if it makes you happy then I’m happy”. “Thanks Company”, he said, “from now on call me Ecstasy”. “Okay, so can I change my name?”, she asked. “Sure! Whatever you want.”, Misery cooed back. “Call me Serenity”. “Serenity? Why Serenity?”, Misery said confused. “Because whenever I’m with you I am at peace.”, she said blushing slightly. “I love you!” Misery said licking her cheek. “I love you too”, she whispered back in his ear, curling her tail around his. And so with their tails intertwined they walked back to their den to indulge in each others company…and lived happily to the end of their days and beyond.
