Asim vs Emiko

Asim vs Emiko

I'm kinda addicted to rap battles (especially of warrior cats, etc). e.e Anyways, I was sitting this morning and Emiko popped into my mind while rewriting the second chapter of my fanfic for the fifth time and I thought "Hey who's better Emiko or Asim?". Finally I started this and managed to finish it in a few hours (not counting the breaks from rendering, etc). I also wanted to make a small post to talk about my past characters such as Emiko and say my opinion on them so this image played to my advantage. I will go through the two cubs of Kiara and Kovu that I created in my time on animation source and what I like/dislike about both. Asim is an older cub with a starting mane on the image btw. So let's get started.

First of all, Emiko. Now to start this I have to say that back in 2013 (oh wow I literally didn't realise how long it has been :0) I really didn't work on my characters too much. I would take a random base, plaster on some colours, write a quick unoriginal biography and post them. All of my characters had the "all beloved, kind and beautiful with a sad story" syndrome where they wouldn't have an interesting personality or story which stood mainly on the sad moments such as Emiko being taken away and loosing her tail. I was younger then and I thought that they were great characters however looking back now it's just funny to read their stories. Let's start with her physical appearance. There's practically no way Kiara and Kovu could have a cub that looks like this. The only points that show their blood relation in a way is the fact that Emiko has an outlander nose and red eyes like her mother. This really makes her seem like a special snowflake from the start. With a few years I learned that a good characters are simple and don't stand out like a white crow. Back then? Heh let's make her as different as possible! Next the biography. Her personality is kind, adventurous, smart and brave which is the most boring personality you can give your character. Each character should have a unique personality and being 'kind and brave' isn't enough. This bio doesn't state a single bad thing about her which just really annoys me. Second is the 'Siblings: open'. Of course there isn't anything wrong with letting others create characters connected to your character but if you are writing a fanfic or making a comic (which I was doing back then) I wouldn't recommend letting others join in. Honestly I would love to make a contest and let others create characters such as Asim's mate, etc but the main story would have to be changed due to the fact that another person is now involved so I'll have to forget about my laziness and do work myself. Okay now to the main point of Emiko's story, she is taken away by humans. Personally I don't really see how humans could fit in with the TLK universe so I prefer to never mention them in my characters so this plays into my disliking of her.

Now I hope I improved from her with Asim. I'd like to think that he's more interesting in both looks and story than Emiko. With my newest characters I tried to make them as different as possible and really build their relationships. For example, Kobe is a grumpy and moody due to the fact that he had practically no choice than to become a shaman because of his broken paw (although he grows to enjoy his role) and Kebibi is sometimes snappy because all her dreams were crushed because of her own wishes to prove to her mother that she could hunt. She finds peace beside Kobe who understands what she feels and eventually manages to accept her fate. Asim is a nervous and stressed lion due to the fact that he has to hold up the reputation of the royal family. Each has a different story but no one is described to be simply kind and brave. I think this is because I wasn't sure how to make an 'evil' character. All of my old characters ere the good guys and this just ruined them for me. Another problem that I hate about my old characters is that I used plain bases without editing a single thing. I render all the images myself and thus have the freedom of changing the shapes of characters and creating completely new poses from several images. Let's take the above image of Asim for an example. He is obviously rendered from Kovu however his paws are slightly larger, smaller chin, different 'mane' and overall muzzle shape which makes him more interesting than the plain old Emiko who was a simple base of Nala.

Welp I think I finished my small rant about my old characters. X3 Who do you think is better Asim or Emiko? Why? Well I'll get back to finish my sixth rewrite (help please T-T) of chapter 2 so see ya!

Glad you agree. ^^ I love looking back at characters like her and see how much you improve over the years.

While Emiko's cute and all, I think Asim's design is much nicer. His colors are less bright and more realistic, and you can see that he's related to Kiara and Kovu, and I like how you've made him have a different chin and mane from Kovu.

Asim's personality is much more complex that Emiko's, and much more interesting. I think the problem with Emiko was that she seemed a bit too perfect. (I used to also make characters that were just kind, brave, adventurous, etc)

I think Emiko's backstory was rather interesting, with her joining the circus and all. But I think Asim feels more like he could be a character in the TLK movies, with his design, personality, and backstory. I like both characters, but I think I like Asim more.
