''Kopa? What are you doing?''
The orange lion sheepishly craned his neck around to see his father standing impatiently near the den entrance. Kopa glanced behind himself at Kira, who had her focus trained solely on the King. Simba was staring at Kira with a disapproving look.
She pressed her ears against her head. ''Hi, Simba..''
''Kira? What are you doing here? You should be out hunting with the other lionesses.''
''I'm sorry, Simba, I-''
Kopa cut in. ''Take it easy, dad, I was taking Kira out to the watering hole for a quick bath.''
Simba glanced at him, eyes narrowed. ''Kopa, you shouldn't even be here. I was looking all over for you.''
''Sorry, dad.''
Simba didn't hear any sign of sincerity in Kopa's voice, and he curled his lip. ''Kopa, you know just as well as I do that you don't mean it. You're just going to keep neglecting your duty as king over and over.''
Kopa looked slightly hurt. ''What's that supposed to mean?''
Simba flicked his tail. ''It means you've developed a bad habit.'' He turned his attention to Kira, who was awaiting a sentence to be den-ridden. ''Kira, you are forbidden to see my son.''
She let out a squeal of protest. ''What?''
Simba inclined his head forward. ''You heard me! If you are seen with my son again, I promise you, your punishment will not be light.''
Kopa glared at his father. ''Dad, you can't do that-''
Simba flung his head in his son's direction, red mane flying. ''I am the king, Kopa. I make the decisions. You know you aren't going to be a good king if you keep getting distracted. I just want you to be successful.''
''I can't just go on and on without breaks, dad! Kira's the only one who bothers to talk to me!''
''Well, then I guess nobody's going to be talking to you now.'' Simba looked at Kira. ''Kira, go join the lionesses.''
The brown female nodded solemnly and glanced up at Kopa, who met her gaze, eyes heavy with sorrow.
''Now, Kira!''
''Yes, Simba,'' Kira stuttered, loping out of the den.
Kopa tried to stop her. ''Kira, wait-''
She ignored him and disappeared down the steep slope of Pride Rock. Kopa sighed, hanging his head.
Simba began to feel sorry. He blinked. Maybe he had gone a little too far. Of course, it was in the heat of the moment. Simba looked at Kopa, whose green eyes were hidden my his long brown mane.
Simba sighed. ''Kopa, I'm your father. I do these things for your own good. I just want you to be a good king.''
Kopa whipped his head up in anger. ''You just want me to be like you! Ever since I came back, you've been forcing me to take the throne! Well, dad, I'm not going to be like you!''
Simba narrowed his brows. ''Kopa. What are you saying?''
''I refuse to be king!''
