The Border

The Border

One early morning, Yuna found herself taking a walk with her slightly elderly grandfather, and she had reluctantly gone along with it. It wasn't like she didn't love her grandfather or anything, it was just that she felt cold and pale without either Hasani or Giza with her.

Okay, she trusted her grandfather with her life, but she had gotten so used to having her brothers as her bodyguards that without them by her side, she felt completely exposed. Still, he seemed so eager to talk with her for once as he gave her a tour of the Pridelands, talking about how he and her grandmother kept sneaking off to the watering hole, how he had acted so much like a jerk to her grand-uncle Malka, how he and her grand-uncle Tojo had found hatchlings and they grew attached to him; he shared all those stories with her. And even she could see that recalling the times of his cubhood put a large smile on his tired face.

Then, they came upon the border. And beyond, lay only a scarred and dry land, separated from the Pridelands only by a river. She could feel the darkness surrounding that area, and it unsettled her very much. Right now, all she ever wanted was to get back home again.

''What is it, Snowflake?'' Simba asked her.

She hesitated for a moment, then turned to him. ''I don't like this place, Grandpa.'' she told him. ''What is it?''

She could swear she saw a shadow cross over his eyes when he paused for a moment. Then, he took a deep breath and sighed. ''That's called the Outlands.'' he explained. ''I think you should know it, if you paid attention to the stories.''

''I think I was a little bit busy then.'' she softly said.

He had a tiny smile on his face. ''I know you feel the darkness around there, but if you paid attention you would also know that the Outlands are part of your heritage.''

''Heritage!?'' she asked, shocked. ''How come?''

''It was there that your mother met your father.''
