Father's Eyes
Karani sprinted across the Pridelands with her brother, Kovu. The warm wind whipped through her fur and she closed her eyes, breathing in the sweet scents of the world around her. She was quicker than Kovu but she slowed herself to a pace that would allow him to keep up with her. They had been running for a while now and Karani could feel her breath starting to catch as she struggled to fill her lungs with air. She halted and then put her rear to the ground as she panted, her tongue was hanging out of her mouth.
“Can’t you keep up to me?” Kovu teased, he slowed down beside his sister and then poked his tongue out at her. She scrunched her nose at him and then frowned.
“I have been running all morning, you only just started!” Karani protected herself from his comments; she was defensive about her hunting skills which included her fitness level. Kovu just chuckled to himself, he shook his head as his hearty laugh continued and then he cocked his head sideways toward her.
“You know, for siblings we don’t really look alike.” He pointed out, the sudden subject change made Karani’s eyebrows furrow and she giggled.
“We sort of do, we have the same eyes.” She tried to reassure him as she looked into his deep emerald eyes, it was true, they resembled hers almost exactly.
“Yeah, we have our father’s eyes I guess…” Kovu dropped his head as he spoke and his voice trailed off. Karani understood why he had, neither of them had known their father but Karani would have given anything to have met him.
