This is what happened to Chuma before his mother found him. You see Li was jelous that the love of his life had cubs with another and Kotara felt bad for him so she took it out on one of the cubs and apperently he was the weakest.

Poor Chuma. He didn't deserve to die so young and for something he couldn't control. I feel so bad for him.
