I don't think there's really anything wrong, it's not the kindest set of words but the person hasn't said anything directly offensive or critical.
I think that because there is a lot of homophobia in the world, people sometimes jump on the slightest things and accuse them of being offensive or critical towards homosexuals- when they're not.
Think of the phrase "one of 'em" being used in a different context, it's not necessarily offensive.

Not to sound rude, but what is 'one of them'? A 'gay' person? If so what's so wrong with them, if your boyfriend leaves you or something because of it I am sorry, but is there anything wrong with 'gay' people?
