I don't know, actually. Mariah is a human, so she couldn't understand Kiara, because, well, she's a lion cub. I guess Kiara can understand her because most animals know what humans say, like how you would teach your dog a trick: How else would they know what to do? Now, I'm not the author of this, but I'm fairly certain that's the answer you're looking for.
