the weak parts of their body, which is where it hurts the most; such as the head, neck, the pits of the front legs, and the heart of the chest. You can do this with eitheryour claws or with your legs and body; but either way, the aim, like I said before, is to weaken them so that they will not have enough strength or endurance to get away, and then it becomes easier to kill them. Got that so far?”
“Yes, quite clearly.” Kiara replied as she continued to listen to Vitani.
“So,” Vitani continued. “Once you have weakened them, then you go for the kill. This doesn’t need any practice, but you must know how to do it. So there are two fatal parts to go for: The throat and the snout; and all you have to do is squeeze real hard with your jaws and the prey will quickly start to suffocate.”
“Go for the throat or snout, got it.” Kiara assured Vitani as well as herself.
“Alright, now we have reached the end of that lesson. Now it is time to teach you how to fight.”
Kiara nodded as if to say ‘okay, let’s do this’; but at the same time she was feeling a bit nervous. She had never fought anyone before or had anyone teach her, and so she began to question whether she would be able to learn fast enough with this also. Learning to hunt was one thing, but being taught how to fight was certainly another. But she tried not to show it to her teacher.
“Now, I want you to try and pin me first; because after your first try I will be able to judge how you are doing in your technique, and then we can work on it from there.” Vitani remarked, beginning to crouch in defense as if to be ready for attack.
“Okay, I’ll do my best.” Kiara replied, also crouching to get ready to attack and pin Vitani. She was feeling a bit unsure as she was about to go forth, but she still concentrated hard on her opponent just before springing into action.
After a few minutes of thought and concentration, she finally crouched down and leapt as hard as she could towards Vitani, catching her paws on her chest as she went. She managed to knock her down; but as Vitani went, she tucked her hind legs in and inserted them into Kiara’s abdomen and pushed up; flipping Kiara over and onto her back. As Kiara hit the ground, Vitani came resting on top of her chest. She then quickly got off of her and let Kiara get up. Vitani didn’t change her emotion towards the weak attack because she understood that Kiara was only learning; although Kiara was looking slightly ashamed.
“No offence, but that was quite weak.” Vitani stated, trying not to sound too rude.
“None taken.” Kiara replied. “I know that I am not very good. What is it that I am doing?”
“Well, firstly you are trying too hard to get the opponent down; therefore you are tiring yourself out faster. What you are relying on is your strength to gain advantage in the fight; but you have to remember that must have to rely mostly on your technique and strategy. That goes for all lionesses, because the males are slightly stronger than us and their strength and endurance is what they must use to win a fight. But as we are slightly weaker and less durable than the males, we must use our speed and defense technique to have any chance at gaining the upper hand.”
“So what you are saying,” Kiara responded. “is that if you can outsmart your opponent, your chances at winning a fight become greater than when attempting to use brute strength.”
“Exactly; and therefore if you choose to use your strength to fight instead of thinking strategically, you fatigue quicker and become pretty much as good as dead.”
“Does that go for the males as well?” Kiara asked, slightly confused that Vitani had not mentioned that the male lions had to think alike when fighting.
“It should; because this becomes important for all. Everyone must know their limits when fighting; and particularly for males, they may be stronger and yet not as fast as females, but they still must think strategically in the event that they lose their concentration or begin to weaken when overusing their own strength. They will be able to endure better if they can pull off special moves to get the better of their opponents before saving their strength to finish them off. That goes for us as well. The more we save our strength to the end and the more that we fight strategically with speed and defense, the greater chance we have at winning.”
“I see.” Kiara responded again, understanding very well what she was being taught.
“Now here is a tip for getting the better of your opponents:” Vitani continued. “When your opponents try to pin you directly, use your hind legs to insert into their abdomen and push up so that you will flip them onto their backs; like how I just did with you. Something similar that you can try is the same again, but this time you push up without inserting your claws into the abdomen and you will throw them directly over your head. You get that?”
“I think so.” Kiara confirmed.
“Okay, good. Now let’s try this out. You and I will take turns in performing these two techniques. How we will do it is that you will jump and attempt to pin me again and I will perform the same technique to give you an insight on how it is done. I will do this five times in a row and then you will do the same to me, and then we will see how you go.”
“Alright, let’s do it.” Kiara responded as she stood up on all fours to get ready. Vitani immediately stood into position in front of Kiara in preparation for a pounce from her student.
Kiara did not hesitate and leapt at Vitani again; and as Vitani went down she inserted her hind legs into Kiara’s abdomen again, pushed her up and onto her back, leaving Kiara pinned by Vitani once again.
“So you see how it works?” Vitani asked Kiara, still on top on her.
“I think I do, yes. It seems fairly simple.” Kiara replied.
“But just remember,” Vitani continued as she got off of Kiara. “that you must react quickly as soon as they go for the pounce; meaning that if you are too slow to perform the technique when they pounce you, they will pin you down. So reaction time is important. And remember that you must know how to do it.”
“I think that I understand.” Kiara confirmed.
“Alright then, let’s go again.”
Vitani performed the same move on Kiara four more times before it was Kiara’s turn to try. Vitani stood back facing her student and got ready to leap at her. Kiara stood in position ready and waiting.
“Are you ready?” Vitani asked.
“Yes, let’s do it.” Kiara replied.
With that said, Vitani immediately leapt and Kiara with some force and managed to push her down; but as Kiara went, she immediately tucked her hind legs into Vitani’s abdomen, inserting her claws in at the same time, and pushed up; flipping Vitani onto her back. Kiara then had Vitani pinned. She had executed the move perfectly; and Vitani looked up at her and smiled proudly.
“Excellent! That was perfectly done.” Vitani said with a slightly raised and excited voice.
“Thanks.” Kiara replied as she got off of Vitani, feeling proud of what she had accomplished.
“Now let’s go again.” Vitani continued as she got into position for the next four.
Kiara performed the same defense technique again four times and she perfected it on every attempt. Afterwards they took turns at performing the overhead throw move, and Kiara did not disappoint as she perfected it in no time at all. Vitani was quite impressed with Kiara’s ability to learn fast; and at the same time she couldn’t help admiring her as a good friend.
They next parts of the lesson included counter attacks when you are pinned by the opponent; and dodging and blocking strike attacks. The final part of the lesson focused on attack; where it should only be used once the opponent has been outsmarted enough and he/she has fatigued to the point where he/she is unable to strike properly and defend the attacks; which then opens the opportunity to finish them off.
“You must remember” Vitani was saying; “that the opponent will go down faster when you attack the most sensitive parts of the body; meaning the parts where it hurts the most. If you can do this, you can pretty much assure that the opponent will not want to continue the fight.”
Kiara nodded and listened very carefully, as she had done so the entire lesson, and as a result she managed to get through with flying colours.
“So,” Vitani continued. “The weakest parts of the body include the throat, the side of the head, the pits of the legs, and the heart. It is better to attack the side of the head or the throat as they are the easiest to reach. You can also choose to draw your claws or keep them retracted, depending on how soon you want to finish off your opponent; because some might want to weaken their opponents to surrender point before they finish them off with the fatal blow. I prefer to do it this way because you are relieving the pressure on yourself in the fight as you know that you are getting closer to victory, and therefore it becomes easier to win. If
