An Offer of Friendship

An Offer of Friendship

Going back in time, we see what Selfish is up to.

Way before his death, before his final fight with Asabi and following banishment by Mohatu, Selfish had an average life going on. He was resentful of Mohatu, that never faded, but he wasn't as aggressive as he ended up being.

In fact, he ended up finding a close friend before he found Tanglemane. That was Thema, Mohatu's mate. At first, Selfish just wanted to steal Thema for his own purposes just to spite Mohatu, but after a while found that he genuinely likes her.

Thema tries to change Selfish into becoming a better, less bitter lion, but it never really works in the long run. The only time Selfish is kind is when he is around Thema.

So, of course, when Thema dies, Selfish goes a bit off the deep end...

Brown - Yup, you are exactly right! I didn't want Selfish to fall in love with Thema since I've seen a couple different stories where that has happened (and plus, it'd be too similar to the Mufasa/Sarabi/Scar conflict down the line, as you've made note of! xD). So he does love her as a sister and close friend (his only friend - Tanglemane was just a henchman for him), and once he loses the stability of having her in his life, he just loses it.

So, Thema tries to befriend Selfish, even though Selfish wants Thema for his own purposes and to tick his brother off, but overtime, with Thema's continual efforts to get Selfish to come out of his bitter shell, he actually starts to truly like her, maybe even think of her as a sister?

Yeah, okay, I can see that. I mean, come on, no one is born bitter. They're taught to be bitter.

Then Thema dies, and Selfish loses the only link he had between bitterness and a sense of peace and happiness, so he goes off the deep end? Yeah, that sounds about right. It's not like Mohatu has tried to do anything to help his brother.

Reminds me of another certain brotherly pair a few generations down the road, and we all know how THAT turns out!
