Depending on what you want on screenshots. The easiest way I guess would be to hit Print Screen on keyboard when you want to take screenshot and then run some program, like Paint or Photoshop and paste it into it. Edit it if you wish and save. And you have full screen screenshot.

Also in Windows Vista/7 you have Snipping Tool. You can run it by typing Snipping Tool in Start menu. That tool allows you to capture whole or just part of screen. You can decide which part to select or in which shape. You can even draw circle/square/whatever free of all limits. It will also allow you to do some basics editing before saving.

Otherwise in some programs, like players you have option to take screenshot. Like in VLC player you can go to Video and click Take Snapshot and it will save you screenshot of what you are currently playing.

And games usually have some key to take screenshot through interface. Look into options to see which key it is, could be some F key or Print Screen key. So check controls in options to see which key exactly. I believe in most or at least some cases, Print Screen + Paint should work in games too.

Last option is to use some software like Fraps. It will allow you to either record whatever you are doing on screen, games included, or it will also allow you to make screenshot at any time.
