The four hyena "breeds" are: spotted hyena, brown hyena, striped hyena and aardwolf

They are not all the same as people want you to believe. The aardwolf is an insectivore which means it only eats insects and other creepy crawlies and it's found in Eastern and Southern Africa only.

Brown hyenas have social hierarchy comparable to those of wolves, with an alpha male and alpha female, they're also significantly fluffy and are restricted to Western-Southern Africa and is the rarest species of hyena.

The striped hyena is nocturnal where as most species are up and about during the day and night, they are found in North and East Africa, the Caucasus, the Middle East, Middle and Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent and they are striped.

The spotted hyena is the one everyone recognises as the ones in The Lion King and they're found in Sub-Saharan Africa which is where The Lion King takes place.

Hope I helped

Celtic Kate: They are all the same, aren't they? And from production art you can see their early versions look like spotted hyenas (but less cartoony) so they are spotted hyenas.
