Well you are right in many ways. But, still, if they were to replace Kopa with Kovu (which I bet they did), then the storyline would probably stay the same. And, in the original storyline, would Kiara actually, well, mate with her own BROTHER? I sure hope not.

To me Kovu does not look like Kopa at all. I even do not think they share personalities, only thing they share are first two letters of name. So I doubt they are connected in any way more than to any other male character.
