I've searched around on the internet and i heard that a the lion king prequel with the older characters (Mufasa, Sarabi, Scar ect) will be released in 2012.
Is this true? (i have also searched if it is likely but different opions kept that search from being successful)

It would help if you added your source... but ok, I can Google it.
Based on what I can gather, it is just rumor, not fact. So do not count too much on it, I also wouldn't count on 2012 too much either. Beside that it will be about Mufasa, Sarabi, Taka and Sarafina as cubs, and that we will meet Nalas father, there is no more in this rumor. Supposedly it leaked from some Disney Store staff.
I wouldn't get my hopes too high before Disney officially announces it. Because there is very good chance it is not real deal as well as chance for it to be canceled, before it would be announced. There are no facts supporting it.
But on the other hand Toy Story 3 rumor was true and if Disney is really looking to make new sequels/prequels of older movies, then it might even happen.
So at the end it is up to you to decide, there are no facts for it, nor there are against it.
